The herbicide paraquat (PQ) is responsible for a significant number of fatalities resulting from self-poisoning. Nevertheless, only a limited number of comprehensive studies focusing on fatal PQ poisoning, which include examination of autopsy findings, histopathology, and quantitative analysis of post-mortem samples, have been published. This study aimed to evaluate autopsy findings, histopathology, and quantitative analysis of PQ in post-mortem human serum samples using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), a simple, sensitive, and specific method. Autopsies were performed on all deaths due to PQ poisoning, and serum samples were sent to the toxicology laboratory for chemical analysis. The method was successfully applied to seven human serum samples, and the results indicate its reliability for detecting PQ. The study reports fatal serum PQ levels ranging from 0.5 to 372.0 µg/mL. The comprehensive data presented in this study can be useful for further research and practical applications.

Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 vaccination reduces morbidity and mortality associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); unfortunately, it is associated with serious adverse events, including sudden unexplained death (SUD)., Objective: We aimed to study the genetic basis of SUD after COVID-19 vaccination in Thailand., Methods: From April to December 2021, cases with natural but unexplained death within 7 days of COVID-19 vaccination were enrolled for whole exome sequencing., Results: Thirteen were recruited, aged between 23 and 72 years; 10 (77%) were men, 12 were Thai; and 1 was Australian. Eight (61%) died after receiving the first dose of vaccine, and 7 (54%) died after receiving ChAdOx1 nCoV-19; however, there were no significant correlations between SUD and either the number or the type of vaccine. Fever was self-reported in 3 cases. Ten (77%) and 11 (85%) died within 24 hours and 3 days of vaccination, respectively. Whole exome sequencing analysis revealed that 5 cases harbored SCN5A variants that had previously been identified in patients with Brugada syndrome, giving an SCN5A variant frequency of 38% (5 of 13). This is a significantly higher rate than that observed in Thai SUD cases occurring 8-30 days after COVID-19 vaccination during the same period (10% [1 of 10]), in a Thai SUD cohort studied before the COVID-19 pandemic (12% [3 of 25]), and in our in-house exome database (12% [386 of 3231])., Conclusion: These findings suggest that SCN5A variants may be associated with SUD within 7 days of COVID-19 vaccination, regardless of vaccine type, number of vaccine dose, and presence of underlying diseases or postvaccine fever., (Copyright © 2022 Heart Rhythm Society. Background and Objective: Diagnosis of cholinesterase inhibitor insecticide ingestion is based on clinical suspicious and should be confirmed by cholinesterase essay. However, serum cholinesterase activity test requires specific instruments and procedure. This study aimed to develop simple colorimetric test to detect cholinesterase inhibitors in the gastric content, using phytoesterase and alpha naphthyl acetate as a chromogenic substrate., Materials and Methods: Methomyl and chlorpyrifos were selected for the phytoesterase enzyme inhibition assay. The experiment was conducted using pooled insecticide-free gastric content sample from ten cadavers. The gastric content samples were prepared by simple filtration procedure or liquid-liquid extraction procedure with dichloromethane or ethyl acetate. The inhibitor concentrations measured by the developed phytoesterase enzyme inhibition assay were compared with those analyzed by the LC-MS/MS and the GC-FPD., Results: Different sample preparation procedures, sensitivity and specificity and specificity of the test were investigated. Sample extracted with dichloromethane reduced the effect of matrix in gastric content as same as ethyl acetate. The developed color test method of detection showed 56.52% sensitivity and 100% specificity for methomyl, 100% sensitivity and 96.30% specificity for chlorpyrifos. The limit of detection of the assay was 422.6 ng mL-1 for methomyl and was 339.8 ng mL-1 for chlorpyrifos., Conclusion: This developed method could be used an alternative diagnostic test for methomyl and chlorpyrifos self-ingestion.

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the associations between learning styles and high academic achievement and to ascertain whether the factors associated with high academic achievement differed between preclinical and clinical students., Methods: A survey was conducted among undergraduate medical students in Chiang Mai University, Thailand. The Index of Learning Styles questionnaire was used to assess each student's learning style across four domains. High academic achievement was defined as a grade point average of at least 3.0., Results: Of the 1,248 eligible medical students, 1,014 (81.3%) participated. Learning styles differed between the preclinical and clinical students in the active/reflective domain. A sequential learning style was associated with high academic achievement in both preclinical and clinical students. A reflective learning style was only associated with high academic achievement among preclinical students., Conclusion: The association between learning styles and academic achievement may have differed between preclinical and clinical students due to different learning content and teaching methods. Students should be encouraged to be flexible in their own learning styles in order to engage successfully with various and changing teaching methods across the curriculum. Instructors should be also encouraged to provide a variety of teaching materials and resources to suit different learning styles.

This paper presents and discusses 30 cases of cadavers that had been transferred for forensic entomology investigations to the Department of Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, northern Thailand, from 2000 to 2006. Variable death scenes were determined, including forested area and suburban and urban outdoor and indoor environments. The fly specimens found in the corpses obtained were the most commonly of the blow fly of family Calliphoridae, and consisted of Chrysomya megacephala (F.), Chrysomya rufifacies (Macquart) Chrysomya villeneuvi Patton, Chrysomya nigripes Aubertin, Chrysomya bezziana Villeneuve, Chrysomya chani Kurahashi, Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann), Hemipyrellia ligurriens (Wiedemann), and two unknown species. Flies of the family Muscidae [Hydrotaea spinigera Stein, Synthesiomyia nudiseta (Wulp)], Piophilidae [Piophila casei (L.)], Phoridae [Megaselia scalaris (Loew)], Sarcophagidae [Parasarcophaga ruficornis (F.) and three unknown species], and Stratiomyiidae (Sargus sp.) were also collected from these human remains. Larvae and adults of the beetle, Dermestes maculatus DeGeer (Coleoptera: Dermestidae), were also found in some cases. Chrysomya megacephala and C. rufifacies were the most common species found in the ecologically varied death scene habitats associated with both urban and forested areas, while C. nigripes was commonly discovered in forested places. S. nudiseta was collected only from corpses found in an indoor death scene.
