Changes in AMH from baseline level (AMH0) in each group were compared.Results: AMH0 did not differ between the two groups (3.5 ± 3.33 in LOC vs 2.4 ± 2.72 in LM, P=0.250). AMH1, AMH2, and AMH3 in each group were also similar. However, a significant decline of AMH (ie more than 50% decrease compared to AMH0) at postoperative 6 months occurred more frequently in the LOC group than in the LM group. In the sub-analysis of the LOC group, a significant decline of AMH at postoperative 2 months and 6 months was highly correlated with bilateral ovarian tumors (P=0.001).Conclusion: Compared to LM, serum AMH level showed a minimal decrease after 1 week following LOC, which did not revert to normal over 6 months of follow-up. In addition, a significant decline of ovarian reserve at postoperative 6 months was significantly more frequent in the LOC group, suggesting that LOC may have more adverse effects on ovarian reserve compared to the LM (control) group. Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-specific hypertensive disorder, affecting up to 10% of pregnancies worldwide. The primary etiology is considered to be abnormal development and function of placental cells called trophoblasts. We previously developed a two-step protocol for differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells, first into cytotrophoblast (CTB) progenitor-like cells, and then into both syncytiotrophoblast (STB)- and extravillous trophoblast (EVT)-like cells, and showed that it can model both normal and abnormal trophoblast differentiation. We have now applied this protocol to induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) derived from placentas of pregnancies with or without PE. While there were no differences in CTB induction or EVT formation, PE-iPSC-derived trophoblast showed a defect in syncytialization, as well as a blunted response to hypoxia. RNAseq analysis showed defects in STB formation and response to hypoxia; however, DNA methylation changes were minimal, corresponding only to changes in response to hypoxia. Overall, PE-iPSC recapitulated multiple defects associated with placental dysfunction, including a lack of response to decreased oxygen tension. This emphasizes the importance of the maternal microenvironment in normal placentation, and highlights potential pathways that can be targeted for diagnosis or therapy, while absence of marked DNA methylation changes suggests that other regulatory mechanisms mediate these alterations.

In this study, eutectic-Bi–Sn-coated basalt fiber (BF)-reinforced carbon nanotube (CNT)/epoxy hybrid composites were fabricated for dual functionality, i.e., in managing and shielding clinical X-ray radiation and electromagnetic interference (EMI). BF mats were coated with Bi–Sn nanoparticles and subsequently layered with multi-walled CNTs mixed epoxy resin using the vacuum-assisted resin transfer method. High resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed a good dispersion of Bi–Sn nanoparticles over BF and, CNTs within the epoxy matrix. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the presence of Bi–Sn, basalt, and CNT phases in the composites. High-resolution Raman spectroscopy revealed characteristic peaks corresponding to the CNTs, epoxy, and Bi–Sn phases. EMI total shielding effectiveness (SET) analysis in the X-band frequency range (8.2–12.4 GHz) demonstrated that the Bi–Sn/BF/CNT/epoxy (S3) exhibits the highest SET value of 30.4 dB, which is attributable to the synergistic effect of the Bi–Sn coating and CNT filler. Analysis of X-ray-radiation leakage revealed that all the composite samples effectively attenuated X-rays with minimal leakage, limited to 6.8 mR. These results indicate the potential of these composites for applications as eco-friendly, non-toxic, and lead-free various industries including healthcare, electronics, aerospace, and defense.

An ultra-thin transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) layer can support guided exciton-polariton modes due to the strong coupling between excitons and photons. Herein, we report the guided mode resonance in an ultra-thin TMDC grating structure. Owing to the strong exciton resonances in TMDCs, a TMDC grating structure shows guided-mode resonance even at a thickness limit of ∼10 nm and is capable of realizing polaritonic dispersion in a monolithic grating structure. We investigated the polarization and thickness dependence of the optical dispersion relations of the tungsten disulfide (WS2) grating structure. In addition, we confirmed that the monolithic WS2 grating coupler can be used to couple the near-field guided exciton-polariton out into the far field. We believe that ultra-thin TMDC layers can facilitate sub-wavelength nanophotonic applications.

Objective Inhibiting the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway delays differentiation and increases proliferation of muscle stem cells in most species. Here, we aimed to investigate the effect of p38 inhibitor (p38i) treatment on the proliferation and differentiation of chicken muscle stem cells. Methods Chicken muscle stem cells were collected from the muscle tissues of Hy-line Brown chicken embryos at embryonic day 18, then isolated by the preplating method. Cells were cultured for 4 days in growth medium supplemented with dimethyl sulfoxide or 1, 10, 20 μM of p38i, then subcultured for up to 4 passages. Differentiation was induced for 3 days with differentiation medium. Each treatment was replicated 3 times. Background/Aims: Gastric cancers (GCs), particularly the Lauren intestinal type, show a male predominance. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of reproductive factors on GCs in females, according to Lauren classification. Methods: Medical records of 1,849 males and 424 females who underwent radical gastrectomy or endoscopic resection for GCs between 2010 and 2018 were reviewed. The incidences of intestinal-type GCs were compared between males and groups of females stratified according to postmenopausal period. Associations between reproductive factors in females and intestinaltype GCs were analyzed using multivariate models. Cellular agriculture is an emerging research field of agribiotechnology that aims to produce agricultural products using stem cells, without sacrificing animals or cultivating crops. Cultivated meat, as a representative cellular product of cellular agriculture, is being actively researched due to global food insecurity, environmental, and ethical concerns. This review focuses on the application of stem cells, which are the seeds of cellular agriculture, for the production of cultivated meat, with emphasis on deriving and culturing muscle and adipose stem cells for imitating fresh meat. Establishing standards and safety regulations for culturing stem cells is crucial for the market entry of cultured muscle tissue-based biomaterials. Understanding stem cells is a prerequisite for creating reliable cultivated meat and other cellular agricultural biomaterials. The techniques and regulations from the cultivated meat industry could pave the way for new cellular agriculture industries in the future.

Background/Aims Lymphocytes are an important component of the cell-mediated immune system. As lymphopenia is reportedly associated with poor prognoses in patients with various cancers, we investigated this notion in patients who underwent curative gastrectomy. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the association between absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) and prognosis in patients with stage I–III gastric cancer who underwent curative surgical resection. Ever lymphopenic patients were defined as those with ALCs < 1,000/μL at any time post-diagnosis except within 30 days post-surgery. Adjusted multivariable regression models were used to evaluate the associations between lymphopenia and overall mortality, gastric cancer-specific mortality, and disease-free survival. Results We investigated 1,222 patients diagnosed between January 2011 and December 2015. Fifty-six patients (4.6%) were lymphopenic at diagnosis and nearly one-quarter (24.8%) were ever lymphopenic with a mean minimum ALC of 640/μL. Older age (odds ratio [OR], 1.02) and higher stage (stage III vs. I; OR, 3.01) were positively associated with ever lymphopenia. On multivariable analysis, ever lymphopenia predicted higher overall mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 1.83; p = 0.008), higher gastric cancer-specific mortality (HR, 1.58; p = 0.048), and shorter disease-free survival (HR, 1.83; p = 0.006). The 5-year gastric cancer-specific mortality rates for ever- and never lymphopenic patients were 10.9% and 3.7%, respectively; their 5-year cumulative recurrence rates were 15.1% and 4.6%, respectively. Conclusions This study demonstrate that ever lymphopenia is independent prognostic factor for overall mortality and recurrence in patients with potentially curable gastric cancer; hence, ALCs may be a biomarker for predicting the prognoses of patients with stage I–III gastric cancer who had curative gastrectomy.

In recent years, the sensible heat load of buildings has been decreasing due to the promotion of energy conservation, and the sensible heat factor is expected to decrease. In response, the conventional dehumidification method using overcooled condensation is likely insufficient to handle latent heat, and an advanced dehumidification method is required. The authors have focused these issues and development on a dehumidification method using membranes. Membrane dehumidification systems (MDS) are relatively simple, then it is expected to be next-generation dehumidification system. Therefore, to evaluate the energysaving performance of MDS, this study developed an energy consumption balance equation for a system that uses overcooled & reheating and MDS, and verified energy-saving performance under different conditions. The results of the study quantitatively showed the system efficiency (Specific energy consumption, vacuum pump consumption per unit of dehumidification) of MDS, which is the amount of energy saved by MDS compared to the conventional system under the specified COP of the cooled heat source equipment and reheating equipment. The system efficiency at which MDS is superior under different room sensible heat factors and membrane utilization methods are also clarified. This enables determining the required system efficiency when considering the introduction of a MDS, and understanding the conditions for introducing a system in which MDS is competitive.

Abstract Background We sought to assess the prognostic significance of lymph node ratio (LNR) and N stage in patients undergoing D2 gastrectomy and adjuvant chemotherapy, S-1, and XELOX and to compare the efficacy of them according to LNRs and N stages to evaluate the clinical impact of using LNRs compared with using N staging. Methods Patients undergoing D2 gastrectomy with adequate lymph node dissection and adjuvant chemotherapy for stage II/III gastric cancer between Mar 2011 and Dec 2016 were analysed. Of the 477 patients enrolled, 331 received S-1 and 146 received XELOX. LNR groups were segregated as 0, 0–0.1, 0.1–0.25, and > 0.25 (LNR0, 1, 2, and 3, respectively). Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to minimise potential selection bias and compare DFS and OS stratified by LNRs and N stages in the two treatment groups. Results After PSM, the sample size of each group was 110 patients, and variables were well balanced. All patients had more than 15 examined lymph nodes (median 51, range 16~124). In multivariate analysis, LNR (> 0.25) and N stage (N3) showed independent prognostic value in OS and DFS, but LNR (> 0.25) showed better prognostic value. In subgroup analysis, the LNR3 group showed better 5-year DFS (20% vs 54%; HR 0.29; p = 0.004) and 5-year OS (26% vs 67%; HR 0.28; p = 0.020) in the XELOX group. The N3 group showed better 5-year DFS (38% vs 66%; HR 0.40; p = 0.004) and 5-year OS (47% vs 71%; HR 0.45; p = 0.019) in the XELOX group. Stage IIIC showed better 5-year DFS (22% vs 57%; HR 0.32; p = 0.004) and 5-year OS (27% vs 68%; HR 0.32; p = 0.009) in the XELOX group. The LNR3 group within N3 patients showed better 5-year DFS (21% vs 55%; HR 0.31; p = 0.004) and 5-year OS (27% vs 68%; HR 0.34; p = 0.018) in the XELOX group. Conclusions LNR showed better prognostic value than N staging. LNR3, N3 and stage IIIC groups showed the superior efficacy of XELOX to that of S-1. And the LNR3 group within N3 patients showed more survival benefit from XELOX. LNR > 0.25, N3 stage and stage IIIC were the discriminant factors for selecting XELOX over S-1. Abstract In this study, we demonstrate a high-resolution 15 Tesla Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry coupled with a reverse-phase ultra-performance liquid chromatography (RP-UPLC) system for determining the geographical origins of raw propolis samples. The UPLC/FT-ICR MS-based high-resolution platform was validated on the ethanol-extracted propolis (EEP) from various propolis raw materials originating from different countries (i.e., Argentina, Brazil, China, and Korea) to determine the geographical origins of the propolis and the origin-specific key compounds. Based on approximately 8000 molecular features extracted from UPLC/FT-ICR MS datasets, a partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) plot showed distinct separations among propolis samples from four different origins. Key propolis components contributing to the discrimination of Korean propolis from Brazilian and Chinese propolis were identified and classified into five subgroups (i.e., flavonoids, phenols, terpenoids, fatty acids, and others). This analysis revealed the characteristic features of the different propolis samples, and this analytical platform can be further used to determine the geographical origins and to assess the quality of the commercial products.

BackgroundScreening endoscopy is considered to be the most accurate tool for early detection of gastric cancer, but it is both invasive and costly. It is therefore essential to develop cost-effective and non-invasive diagnostic tools for gastric cancer. The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of certain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with gastric cancer and to survey the usefulness of VOCs as screening tools of gastric cancer.MethodsThe present study was conducted prospectively to identify the relationship between gastric cancer and specific VOCs quantified by mass spectrometry. Exhaled breath samples from a total of 43 participants were analysed. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the College of Medicine, Catholic University of Korea (KC16TISI0598), and registered to clinical research information service (KCT0004356).ResultsNine VOCs differed significantly between the control and cancer patient groups. When participants were divided into control, early gastric cancer (EGC), and advanced gastric cancer (AGC) groups, seven VOCs remained significantly different. Of these, four (propanal, aceticamide, isoprene and 1,3 propanediol) showed gradual increases as cancer advanced, from normal control to EGC to AGC. In receiver operating characteristic curves for these four VOCs, the area under the curve for gastric cancer prediction was highest (0.842) when more than two VOCs were present.ConclusionsThe present study offers potential directions for non-invasive gastric cancer screening, and may inspire advanced diagnostic technologies in the era of smart home healthcare. However, despite the high accuracy, cancer-specific VOCs from several studies on different populations, and analytic methods show inconsistency, it is necessary to establish standards for each analytical method, and to validate on each population.

When the cascade heat pump system is applied as a multi-functional system that can be used not only for hot water supply but also for air-conditioning of buildings, the low-stage cycle is responsible for indoor heating and cooling thermal load, and the high-stage cycle is responsible for hot water supply by raising the refrigerant temperature. Unlike the existing cascade heat pump system designed with only one operation mode for hot water supply, the multi-functional cascade heat pump system should be considered with various parameters. This study was proposed a design sequence of the cascade heat pump system for building application, and the energy-saving performance was compared with the existing cascade heat pump system for hot water supply and parallel heat pump system for air-conditioning. The office building was set for the study, and the thermal load of the building was calculated in the TRNSYS program. The systems were calculated using the thermodynamic equation and the model built into EnergyPlus. As a result, the system can be affected by the outdoor air heat source. The energy-saving performance was 25% for the multi-functional cascade heat pump system compared to the simultaneous use of the existing system.

Remarkable consequences of maritime accident can be various, including structural damage, loss of life and marine pollution. During an accidental phenomenon, such as ship grounding, the amount of oil spillage indicates casualties’ extent of surrounding sea water. Effort to provide protection for sea environment against such event has been conducted actively by developing navigational instruments, and passively using structural development and assessment. The accidental grounding is, however, a very complicated process with high sensitivity to given factors during its occurrence. Variety in ship type, location, obstruction etc. affected by advance improvement in naval technology, invites sustainable analysis for structural crashworthiness and failure to produce evaluation data.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of Volume NT(TM) , a new technique that automatically archives mid-sagittal plane views and measures the maximum nuchal translucency (NT) thickness, by comparing its measurements with those made with conventional two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) techniques. METHODS: This was a prospective study of 130 singleton pregnancies undergoing NT screening at 11 + 0 to 13 + 6 weeks of gestation. Fetuses with enlarged NT or multiple anomalies and those in the prone position were excluded. Success rate of NT measurement was assessed using Volume NT(TM) , 2D and 3D techniques. In cases in which all three techniques were successful, intra- and interobserver bias and levels of agreement for NT measurements within and between techniques were evaluated using Bland-Altman plots. RESULTS: Of 130 cases enrolled into the study, 16 were excluded from analysis due to enlarged NT (n = 3), prone position (n = 2) or missing data (n = 11). Among the 114 cases analyzed, NT measurement was successful by the conventional 2D method in 95.6% (109/114) of cases and by 3D and Volume NT(TM) measurements in 103 and 93 cases, respectively. Success rate was not significantly different between methods. In 89 cases, NT values were available using all three methods. Among them, mean ± SD 2D-NT was 1.3 ± 0.4 mm, 3D-NT was 1.2 ± 0.4 mm and Volume NT(TM) was 1.3 ± 0.4 mm. The mean differences of the intra- and interobserver variability of each method were not significantly different from zero for each method. CONCLUSIONS: Volume NT(TM) , a novel technique for automated NT measurement, is apparently reproducible and comparable with conventional 2D and 3D ultrasound techniques for NT measurement. J Oral Pathol Med (2010) 39: 533-539 Objective: Membranous (M) cell of the human palatine tonsil is an antigen entry site for mucosal infection, but its location is obscure in histological sections. Recently, a microarray analysis has demonstrated that clusterin, annexin A5, CD44, MMP14, and beta-tubulin are candidate genes of M cell marker in mice. Among these genes, we here describe class II beta-tubulin as a new marker for human tonsillar M cells and follicular dendritic cells (FDCs), and present its usefulness for diagnosis of angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphomas (AILTs). Materials and methods: Immunohistochemistry and Western blotting for class II beta-tubulin were performed using 81 cases of lymphoid, gastrointestinal and thyroid tissues, and an FDC cell line, respectively. Double immunostaining with clusterin and class II beta-tubulin were carried out. Results: Class II beta-tubulin localized the M cells and FDCs in the palatine tonsils (10/10, 100%) and adenoids (10/10, 100%). It was colocalized with clusterin in the palatine tonsils. However, class II beta-tubulin staining did not identify intestinal M cells in the intestines. Immunoblot analysis revealed that class II beta-tubulin expression was upregulated in HK cells, a normal FDC cell line. Class II beta-tubulin immunostaining highlighted hyperplastic FDC meshworks in all AILTs (14/14, 100%). Conclusion: Class II beta-tubulin is a specific histochemical marker for human tonsillar M cells and FDCs. Thus, class II beta-tubulin immunostaining may be useful to identify tonsillar M cells and to diagnose FDC proliferative lesions such as AILT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rationale: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most frequent cause of significant lower respiratory illness in infants and young children, but its pathogenesis is not fully understood. The transcription factor Nrf2 protects lungs from oxidative injury and inflammation via antioxidant response element (ARE)-mediated gene induction.Objectives: The current study was designed to determine the role of Nrf2-mediated cytoprotective mechanisms in murine airway RSV disease.Methods: Nrf2-deficient (Nrf2(-/-)) and wild-type (Nrf2(+/+)) mice were intranasally instilled with RSV or vehicle. In a separate study, Nrf2(+/+) and Nrf2(-/-) mice were treated orally with sulforaphane (an Nrf2-ARE inducer) or phosphate-buffered saline before RSV infection.Measurements and Main Results: RSV-induced bronchopulmonary inflammation, epithelial injury, and mucus cell metaplasia as well as nasal epithelial injury were significantly greater in Nrf2(-/-) mice than in Nrf2(+/+) mice. Compared with Nrf2(+/+) mice, significantly attenuated viral clearance and IFN-gamma, body weight loss, heightened protein/lipid oxidation, and AP-1/NF-kappaB activity along with suppressed antioxidant induction was found in Nrf2(-/-) mice in response to RSV. Sulforaphane pretreatment significantly limited lung RSV replication and virus-induced inflammation in Nrf2(+/+) but not in Nrf2(-/-) mice.Conclusions: The results of this study support an association of oxidant stress with RSV pathogenesis and a key role for the Nrf2-ARE pathway in host defense against RSV. Mutations in the ACTN4 gene cause focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), which shows autosomal dominant inheritance (Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man No. 603278, FSGS1). Most patients with a diagnosis of FSGS1 show a mild to moderate degree of proteinuria during adolescence or later, and some patients gradually progress to end-stage renal disease. Here, we report a familial case of FSGS1 in which 2 affected siblings showed unusual clinical, pathological, and genetic features. Both patients presented with full-blown rapidly progressing nephrotic syndrome in early childhood. Renal pathological findings were of an FSGS collapsing variant and FSGS not otherwise specified. A novel ACTN4 mutation, p.Ser262Phe, was detected in the patients, and their father was found to have a germline mosaicism for the mutation. In addition, these siblings also had a heterozygous p.Thr5Met substitution in NPHS1, which encodes nephrin, although the functional significance of this substitution is unclear. This is the third clinical report of FSGS1 and the first case report of germline mosaicism confirmed in patients with hereditary podocyte disorders. FSGS1 may have widely variable clinical and pathological phenotypes and therefore should be considered in young children with full-blown and rapidly progressing nephrotic syndrome. Abstract Background Slug is a transcription factor that activates the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) process in cancer progression. The aim of our study was to evaluate the clinical significance of Slug expression in gastric cancer. Methods The expression of Slug in gastric cancer tissues of 456 patients who underwent gastrectomy was evaluated by immunohistochemistry using tissue microarrays. Slug expression level was defined by the composite score determined by multiplying the tumor staining scores for intensity and extent. The associations of Slug expression with clinicopathological characteristics and overall and recurrence-free survival were analyzed. Results Patients were divided into three groups according to Slug composite score (≤4, 6, and 9). Low, mid, and high expression of Slug was observed in 104 (22.7%), 130 (28.3%), and 225 (49.0%) of cases, respectively. Overall survival and recurrence-free survival progressively increased from high to low Slug expression. In terms of lymph node metastasis, the rate of positive lymph node metastasis was 38/104 (36.5%), 79/130 (60.8%), and 178/225 (79.1%) in low, mid, and high Slug expression groups, respectively, displaying a tendency to increase with higher Slug expression. In a multivariate analysis adjusting for patient age, tumor size, tumor depth, and histology, high Slug expression was associated with a high rate of positive lymph node metastasis compared with low Slug expression (odds ratio 3.42; 95% confidence interval, 1.74–6.69). The snake-like robot is used for clean-up project in Fukushima nuclear disaster site. The contaminated water at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plants has been purified by the water treatment system, called Advanced Liquid Processing System, co-developed by Japanese and international technologies. The system is used to remove most remaining radioactive contaminants in water that had to be stored at the facility. In this paper, a snake-like robot, incorporated with Advanced Liquid Processing System is introduced for the severe accident in the nuclear power plants in which human cannot control the cleaning-up in the sea where the radioactive materials have been submerged and some resolved in the sea water. The effective strategy of the cleaning-up is analyzed from the environmental protection aspect with the snake's biomechanics and radioactive hazards.

The aim of this work is to review the laser-based analytical techniques for the quantitative determination of uranium in aqueous solutions. Among the various types of laser-based analytical techniques, two different spectroscopic techniques based on the measurement of laser-induced luminescence of hexavalent uranium ions [U(VI)] in groundwater are reviewed in detail. In the first technique, called time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy, the time-resolved laser-induced luminescence intensities of U(VI) as a function of uranium concentration are measured to obtain the calibration curve. In the second technique, which is based on the simultaneous measurement of the U(VI) luminescence and Raman scattering of water, the calibration curve is obtained by measuring the ratio of the luminescence intensity of U(VI) to the Raman scattering intensity of water for the quantitative determination of uranium. A limit of detection of 0.03 μg/l was achieved at an excitation wavelength of 266 nm using these laser spectroscopic techniques. The results determined using these techniques are in good agreement with the results determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). Thus, these laser-based analytical techniques will be useful to personnel requiring a rapid determination of uranium before the shipment of samples to an accredited laboratory, where relatively intricate and expensive apparatuses, such as ICPMS and radiochemical spectrometry, are used.

A phase change material based radiant cooling panel with thermoelectric module (PCM-TERCP) is proposed in this study. It consists of two aluminium panels, and phase change materials (PCMs) sandwiched between the two panels. Thermoelectric modules (TEMs) are attached to one of the aluminium panels, and heat sinks are attached to the top side of TEMs. PCM-TERCP is a thermal energy storage concept equipment, in which TEMs freeze the PCM during the night whose melting temperature is 16○C. Therefore, the radiant cooling panel can maintain a surface temperature of 16◦C without the operation of TEM during the day. Furthermore, it is necessary to design the PCM-TERCP in a way that it can maintain the panel surface temperature during the targeted operating time. Therefore, the numerical model was developed using finite difference method to evaluate the thermal behaviour of PCM-TERCP. Experiments were also conducted to validate the performance of the developed model. Using the developed model, the possible operation time was investigated to determine the overall heat transfer coefficient required between radiant cooling panel and TEM. Consequently, the results showed that a overall heat transfer coefficient of 394 W/m2K is required to maintain the surface temperature between 16○C to 18○C for a 3 hours operation.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the inlet solution temperature on the performance of an adiabatic cross-flow regenerator using a lithium chloride (LiCl) aqueous solution, and to propose the optimal inlet solution temperature when operating this type of regenerator. In the experimental tests, the inlet solution temperature range varied from 50 to 90°C. The tests were carried out at 10°C intervals while the other conditions remained constant. The measurement parameters for the test were the inlet air dry-bulb temperature and humidity ratio, outlet air dry-bulb temperature and humidity ratio, air volume flow, solution density, and inlet and outlet solution temperatures. The regeneration effectiveness and coefficient of performance (COP) were selected to assess the heat and mass transfer performance of the cross-flow regenerator. The most important finding of this research was to determine the optimal solution inlet temperature in the cross-flow regenerator with the LiCl aqueous solution considering both the regenerator performance and energy consumption. The test results show that the recommended inlet solution temperature is 60°C, considering both regeneration effectiveness and COP.

The remarkable influence of the global warming to Arctic environment opens a possibility to conduct a voyage from Asia to Europe through the Northern Sea Route (NSR). This option is considered as a decent solution to reduce fuel consumption and increase time efficiency in delivering cargo to the designated destination. However, this alternative comes with a challenge to keep safety of ship structures against an impact with obstacles which are possibly encountered at the Arctic. Solid ice can be considered as a serious threat to the double bottom of ship structures in impact phenomena, especially ship grounding. In this work, a series of grounding calculations are conducted to produce estimation of structural crashworthiness during interaction between double bottom and conical type ice. Material characteristics based on tensile testing of polar class material are applied to calculation and compared with non-polar steel.

Vibration analysis is a crucial process in ship design to guarantee crew’s comfortability and to save operating costs by predicting problematical resonance in advance. This study focuses on idealizing fluid mass in tanks by positioning point mass element and quad elements inside the tanks. Also, the added mass effect induced sea water surrounding a ship was included in the present study. The natural frequency obtained from free and forced ship vibration analysis were compared and assessed in the manner of ISO regulation. Finally, it was concluded that the quad element was more adequate to idealize fluid entities in tanks since it was difficult in arranging point mass elements at each grid points properly.

Purpose : This study was undertaken to make a diagnosis weakness and firmness (虛實) of Dysmenorrhea patients by diagnosis questionnaires system(Diagnosis System of Oriental Medicine-DSOM) Methods : The subjects were 58 volunteers who was suffering for dysmenorrhea, employed using Measure of Menstrual Pain (MMP) questionnaire. The had agreed to take part in this experiment, with didn't take any anodyne drugs. The MMP score by using 7 questions and the Menstrual Symptom Severity List(MSSL-D) was measured before and after menstruation cycle. Results and Conclusions : The findings of this study were as follows; 1. We examined Pathogenic Factor's frequency of DSOM, Coldness(寒) was 45 persons 80.36%, Damp(濕) was 40 persons 71.43%, Heart(心) was 37 persons 66.07%, Heat syndrom(熱) was 9 persons 16.07%, insufficiency of Yang(陽虛) was 6 persons 10.71%. 2. We divided Dysmenorrhea patients into two groups(weakness and firmness) by Results of DSOM, Firmness was 25 Persons 43.1%, Weakness was 23 persons 39.7%, Unknown was 10 persons 17.2%. 3. In estimation based on Measure of Menstrual Pain (MMP) questionnaire Severe menstrual pain is weakness, Mild menstrual pain is Firmness. 4. In estimation of coldness and heat syndrom, Coldness was 40 persons 69.0%, Heat syndrom, was 2 persons 3.5%, Possess both coldness and heat syndrom was 9 persons 15.5%.

OBJECTIVE: The message of the importance of a caring doctor-patient relationship is now like an old sermon which does not impact anyone's mind or action. Observing the healing practice of the old time physicians, who valued their attitudes and relationship with their patients more than the actual interventions, this paper reviews the literature on their main therapeutic device - the placebo effect - as a novel way of delivering this old sermon of medicine to contemporary doctors. DISCUSSION: There are countless historical and contemporary examples of the impressive placebo effect and although contested by some, it seems real and significant. The classic conditioning theory and the expectation theory explain reasonably well the mechanisms of the placebo effect, especially in conjunction with each other. The underlying biochemical pathway, according to the limited current knowledge, involves endorphins for pain and dopamine for Parkinson's disease. Finally, human factors such as the doctor's positive attitudes and a good doctor-patient relationship seem to be more essential than the placebo itself in eliciting the placebo effect. CONCLUSIONS: Given the body of evidence supporting the existence of significant placebo effect and the importance of the doctor-patient relationship in determining it, the human factors of the medical treatment should be emphasised in order to maximise the placebo effect and consequently the overall therapeutic effect of the healing acts.

The use of optomechatronic technology, particularly in biomedical optical imaging, is becoming pronounced and ever increasing due to its synergistic effect of the integration of optics and mechatronics. The background of this trend is that the biomedical optical imaging for example in-vivo imaging related to retraction of tissues, diagnosis, and surgical operations have a variety of challenges due to complexity in internal structure and properties of biological body and the resulting optical phenomena. This paper addresses the technical issues related to tissue imaging, visualization of interior surfaces of organs, laparoscopic and endoscopic imaging and imaging of neuronal activities and structures. Within such problem domains the paper overviews the states of the art technology focused on how optical components are fused together with those of mechatronics to create the functionalities required for the imaging systems. Future perspective of the optical imaging in biomedical field is presented in short.

We have proposed a new interface for an wide-angle endoscope for solo surgery. The wide-angle arthroscopic view and magnified region of interest (ROI) within the wide view were shown simultaneously. With a camera affixed to surgical instruments, the position of the ROI could be determined by manipulating the surgical instrument. Image features acquired by the A-KAZE approach were used to estimate the change of position of the surgical instrument by tracking the features every time the camera moved. We examined the accuracy of ROI selection using three different images, which were different-sized square arrays and tested phantom experiments. When the number of ROIs was twelve, the success rate was best, and the rate diminished as the size of ROIs decreased. The experimental results showed that the method of using a camera without additional sensors satisfied the appropriate accuracy required for ROI selection, and this interface was helpful in performing surgery with fewer assistants.

Image guided surgery using medical robots is becoming popular these days. For image guided surgery, a tracking system is required to provide 6DOF information of patient coordinate, surgical instruments and medical robots used in surgery. To provide 6DOF information, a marker has to be attached to the target. However, it is hard to use many markers all together because the markers will take too much space in the surgical area. The tracking system proposed in this study utilizes down sized markers compared to traditional markers by using micro-engraved data-coded pattern with a lens instead of using geometrically specified marker spheres as a tracking target. A tracking system is developed that has a measurement area of 1m to 2.5m from the tracking system. Experiment has been done for surgical navigation using the proposed tracking system and a medical robot.

Abstract Background Mitochondria exhibit a dynamic morphology in cells and their biogenesis and function are integrated with the nuclear cell cycle. In mitotic cells, the filamentous network structure of mitochondria takes on a fragmented form. To date, however, whether mitochondrial fusion activity is regulated in mitosis has yet to be elucidated. Findings Here, we report that mitochondria were found to be fragmented in G2 phase prior to mitotic entry. Mitofusin 1 (Mfn1), a mitochondrial fusion protein, interacted with cyclin B1, and their interactions became stronger in G2/M phase. In addition, MARCH5, a mitochondrial E3 ubiquitin ligase, reduced Mfn1 levels and the MARCH5-mediated Mfn1 ubiquitylation were enhanced in G2/M phase. Conclusions Mfn1 is degraded through the MARCH5-mediated ubiquitylation in G2/M phase and the cell cycle-dependent degradation of Mfn1 could be facilitated by interaction with cyclin B1/Cdk1 complexes.

Abstract Background This study was designed to identify risk factors for lymph node metastasis of early stage colorectal cancer, which was confirmed to a carcinoma that invaded the submucosa after radical resection. Methods In total, 55 patients revealing submucosal invasive colorectal carcinoma on pathology who underwent curative radical resection at the Department of Surgery, St. Vincent’s Hospital, The Catholic University of Korea from January 2007 to September 2010 were evaluated retrospectively. Tumor size, depth of submucosal invasion, histologic grade, lymphovascular invasion, tumor budding, and microacinar structure were reviewed by a single pathologist. Student t-test for continuous variables and Chi-square test for categorical variables were used for comparing the clinicopathological features between two groups (whether lymph node involvement existed or not). Continuous variables are expressed as the mean ± standard error while statistical significance is accepted at P Results The mean age of 55 patients (34 males and 21 females) was 61.2 ± 9.6 years (range, 43–83). Histologically, eight (14.5%) patients had metastatic lymph node. In the univariate analysis, tumor budding (P = 0.047) was the only factor that was significantly associated with lymph node metastasis. Also, the tumor budding had a sensitivity of 83.3%, a specificity of 60.5%, and a negative predictive value of 0.958 for lymph node metastasis in submucosal invasive T1 colorectal cancer. Conclusions The tumor budding seems to have a high sensitivity (83.3%), acceptable specificity (60.5%), and a high negative predictive value (0.958). A close examination of pathologic finding including tumor budding should be performed in order to manage early CRC properly.

Abstract Background TliA is a thermostable lipase secreted by the type 1 secretion system (T1SS) of Pseudomonas fluorescens. The secretion is promoted by its secretion/chaperone domain located near the C-terminus, which is composed mainly of four Repeat-in-Toxin (RTX) repeats. In order to identify the minimal region of TliA responsible for its secretion, five different copies of the secretion/chaperone domain, each involving truncated N-terminal residues and a common C-terminus, were acquired and named as lipase ABC transporter recognition domains (LARDs). Each LARD was fused to epidermal growth factor (EGF) or green fluorescent protein (GFP), and the secretion of EGF-LARD or GFP-LARD fusion proteins was assessed in Escherichia coli with ABC transporter. Results Among the fusion proteins, GFP or EGF with 105-residue LARD3 was most efficiently secreted. In addition, GFP-LARD3 emitted wild type GFP fluorescence. Structurally, LARD3 had the 4 RTX repeats exposed at the N-terminus, while other LARDs had additional residues prior to them or missed some of the RTX repeats. LARD3 was both necessary and sufficient for efficient secretion and maintenance of GFP fluorescence in E. coli, which was also confirmed in P. fluorescens and P. fluorescens ▵tliA, a knock-out mutant of tliA. Conclusion LARD3 was a potent secretion signal in T1SS for its fusion flanking RTX motif, which enhanced secretion and preserved the fluorescence of GFP. LARD3-mediated secretion in E. coli or P. fluorescens will enable the development of enhanced protein manufacturing factory and recombinant microbe secreting protein of interest in situ.

Abstract Background This retrospective study compared the clinicopathological results among three groups divided by time sequence to evaluate the impact of introducing laparoscopic surgery on long-term oncological outcomes for right-sided colon cancer. Methods From April 1986 to December 2006, 200 patients who underwent elective surgery with stage II and III right-sided colon cancer were analyzed. The period for group I referred back to the time when laparoscopic approach had not yet been introduced. The period for group II was designated as the time when first laparoscopic approach for right colectomy was carried out until we overcame its learning curve. The period for group III was the period after overcoming this learning curve. Results When groups I and II, and groups II and III were compared, overall survival (OS) did not differ significantly whereas disease-free survival (DFS) in groups I and III were statistically higher than in group II (P = 0.042 and P = 0.050). In group III, laparoscopic surgery had a tendency to provide better long-term OS ( P = 0.2036) and DFS ( P = 0.2356) than open surgery. Also, the incidence of local recurrence in group III (2.6%) was significantly lower than that in groups II (7.4%) and I (12.1%) ( P = 0.013). Conclusions Institutions should standardize their techniques and then provide fellowship training for newcomers of laparoscopic colon cancer surgery. This technique once mastered will become the gold standard approach to colon surgery as it is both safe and feasible considering the oncological and technical aspects.

Abstract Background Mass spectrometry (MS) data are often generated from various biological or chemical experiments and there may exist outlying observations, which are extreme due to technical reasons. The determination of outlying observations is important in the analysis of replicated MS data because elaborate pre-processing is essential for successful analysis with reliable results and manual outlier detection as one of pre-processing steps is time-consuming. The heterogeneity of variability and low replication are often obstacles to successful analysis, including outlier detection. Existing approaches, which assume constant variability, can generate many false positives (outliers) and/or false negatives (non-outliers). Thus, a more powerful and accurate approach is needed to account for the heterogeneity of variability and low replication. Findings We proposed an outlier detection algorithm using projection and quantile regression in MS data from multiple experiments. The performance of the algorithm and program was demonstrated by using both simulated and real-life data. The projection approach with linear, nonlinear, or nonparametric quantile regression was appropriate in heterogeneous high-throughput data with low replication. Conclusion Various quantile regression approaches combined with projection were proposed for detecting outliers. The choice among linear, nonlinear, and nonparametric regressions is dependent on the degree of heterogeneity of the data. The proposed approach was illustrated with MS data with two or more replicates.

Abstract Background Gene duplication is a major force that contributes to the evolution of new metabolic functions in all organisms. Rhodobacter sphaeroides 2.4.1 is a bacterium that displays a wide degree of metabolic versatility and genome complexity and therefore is a fitting model for the study of gene duplications in bacteria. A comprehensive analysis of 234 duplicate gene-pairs in R. sphaeroides was performed using structural constraint and expression analysis. Results The results revealed that most gene-pairs in in-paralogs are maintained under negative selection (ω ≤ 0.3), but the strength of selection differed among in-paralog gene-pairs. Although in-paralogs located on different replicons are maintained under purifying selection, the duplicated genes distributed between the primary chromosome (CI) and the second chromosome (CII) are relatively less selectively constrained than the gene-pairs located within each chromosome. The mRNA expression patterns of duplicate gene-pairs were examined through microarray analysis of this organism grown under seven different growth conditions. Results revealed that ~62% of paralogs have similar expression patterns (cosine ≥ 0.90) over all of these growth conditions, while only ~7% of paralogs are very different in their expression patterns (cosine Conclusions The overall findings of the study suggest that only a small proportion of paralogs contribute to the metabolic diversity and the evolution of novel metabolic functions in R. sphaeroides. In addition, the lack of relationships between structural constraints and gene-pair expression suggests that patterns of gene-pair expression are likely associated with conservation or divergence of gene-pair promoter regions and other coregulation mechanisms.
