Abstract

We have carried out the basic research for the accelerator and tokamak control system based on the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System (EPICS). We have used the process database and the state notation language (SNL) in the EPICS to develop the simulator which represents as a virtual machine. In this paper, we introduce the simulator of the global orbit feedback system as an example. This simulates the global orbit feedback system under the constraint conditions for Pohang Light Source (PLS) storage ring. Abstract

An e+e- linear collider at 500-GeV C.M. (center of mass) has been proposed as a future accelerator. The C-band linear collider has more than a thousand klystrons and matching modulators. The linear colliders require smart modulators with high reliability, compact and simple configuration, and good power efficiency. This study suggests solutions to problems expected in the future linear colliders. A C-band smart modulator has been developed using a constant-current inverter power supply. The smart modulator provides 350-kV pulses of the pulse-to-pulse stability of 0.35%, the pulse-width of 4.35 microseconds, and the repetition rate of 50 Hz. We also investigated the power efficiency for the C-band scheme. A pulse efficiency of 75% can be achieved by an optimized pulse transformer and the RF phase modulation. With pulsed klystrons of 60% power efficiency, it is possible to achieve the RF system efficiency of 32% with the wall-plug power of 170 MW., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures, Linac2000 paper ID No. THA12 file= THA12.pdf

Abstract

The S-band linear accelerator, which was built to be the source of particles and the front end of the Advanced Photon Source injector, is now also being used to support a low-energy undulator test line (LEUTL) and to drive a free-electron laser (FEL). The more severe rf stability requirements of the FEL have resulted in an effort to identify sources of phase and amplitude instability and implement corresponding upgrades to the rf generation chain and the measurement system. Abstract

The Pohang Accelerator Laboratory operates an electron linac for the pulsed neutron source as one of the long-term nuclear R&D programs at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The designed beam parameters are as follows; The nominal beam energy is 100 MeV, the maximum beam power is 10 kW, and the beam current is varied from 300 mA to 5A depends on the pulse repetition. The linac has two operating modes: one for short pulse modes with the various repetitions between 2 ns and 100 ns and the other for long pulse modes with 1 ms repetition. We have constructed and tested an electron linac based on the existing equipment such as a SLAC-5045 klystron, two constant gradient accelerating sections, and a thermionic RF-gun. Abstract

For the generation of picosecond (< 100 ps) electron beam pulses, we studied the RF modulation of a conventional triode electron gun. The feasibility study for this scheme has been experimentally investigated by modulating a triode gun of the Y-824 cathode-grid (KG) structure provided by the CPI Eimac, with 2.856-GHz pulsed RF generated by a solid-state amplifier (SSA). Abstract

The flux-weighted cross-sections of the natYb(γ, xn)175,169,167Yb reactions were measured at the bremsstrahlung end-point energies of 12, 14, 16, 60, 65, and 70 MeV by the activation and off-line γ-ray spectrometric technique using the 20 MeV electron linac (ELBE) at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), Dresden, Germany, and 100 MeV electron linac at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL), Korea. The natYb(γ, xn)175,169,167Yb reaction cross-sections as a function of photon energy were also calculated theoretically using the TALYS 1.9 code. The flux-weighted average values at different end-point energies were obtained from the literature as well as from the theoretical values reported in the TALYS library based on mono-energetic photons. They were compared with the flux-weighted values based on the present experimental data and were found to be in general agreement. It was also found that the experimental and theoretical cross-section data increased from the threshold values to a certain energy, where other reaction channels opened, which highlights the role of excitation energy. After a certain value, the individual reaction cross-sections decrease with an increase in bremsstrahlung energy owing to the opening of other reaction channels, which indicates the partitioning of energy in different reaction channels. Abstract

The spectrum-averaged cross-sections of nat Gd(gamma,xn)159,153 Gd reactions induced by the bremsstrahlung end-point energies of 12, 14, 16. 60, 65, and 70 MeV were measured by activation and off-line gamma-ray spectrometric technique using the 20 MeV electron linac (ELBE) at HZDR, Dresden, Germany, and 100 MeV electron linac at Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, Korea. The TALYS 1.9 code was also used to calculate the theoretical nat Gd(gamma, xn)159,153 Gd reaction cross-sections as a function of photon energy. The spectrum-averaged values at various end-point energies were calculated from the literature data as well as theoretical values based on the TALYS 1.9 code, which is for mono-energetic photons. They were found to be in good agreement with the flux-weighted values of the current experimental data. It was also observed that the experimental and theoretical cross-sections increase from the threshold values to a certain energy, at which point another reaction channel opens, indicating the role of excitation energy. Individual reaction cross- sections decrease after a certain value as bremsstrahlung energy increases due to the opening of other reactions, indicating energy shearing among the different reaction channels.

Abstract

Background: Some people have characteristics of both asthma and COPD (asthma-COPD overlap), and evidence suggests they experience worse outcomes than those with either condition alone. Research Question: What is the genetic architecture of asthma-COPD overlap, and do the determinants of risk for asthma-COPD overlap differ from those for COPD or asthma? Study Design and Methods: We conducted a genome-wide association study in 8,068 asthma-COPD overlap case subjects and 40,360 control subjects without asthma or COPD of European ancestry in UK Biobank (stage 1). We followed up promising signals (P < 5 × 10 –6) that remained associated in analyses comparing (1) asthma-COPD overlap vs asthma-only control subjects, and (2) asthma-COPD overlap vs COPD-only control subjects. These variants were analyzed in 12 independent cohorts (stage 2). Results: We selected 31 independent variants for further investigation in stage 2, and discovered eight novel signals (P < 5 × 10 –8) for asthma-COPD overlap (meta-analysis of stage 1 and 2 studies). These signals suggest a spectrum of shared genetic influences, some predominantly influencing asthma (FAM105A, GLB1, PHB, TSLP), others predominantly influencing fixed airflow obstruction (IL17RD, C5orf56, HLA-DQB1). One intergenic signal on chromosome 5 had not been previously associated with asthma, COPD, or lung function. Subgroup analyses suggested that associations at these eight signals were not driven by smoking or age at asthma diagnosis, and in phenome-wide scans, eosinophil counts, atopy, and asthma traits were prominent. Interpretation: We identified eight signals for asthma-COPD overlap, which may represent loci that predispose to type 2 inflammation, and serious long-term consequences of asthma.
