3. Quarter and Full Car Models Optimisation of Passive and Active Suspension System Using Genetic Algorithm

Abstract

This study evaluates a suspension design of a passenger car to obtain maximum rider's comfort when the vehicle is subjected to different road profile or road surface condition. The challenge will be on finding a balance between the rider's comfort and vehicle handling to optimize design parameters. The study uses a simple passive suspension system and an active suspension model integrated with a pneumatic actuator controlled by proportional integral derivative (PID) controller in both quarter car and full car models having a different degree of freedoms (DOF) and increasing degrees of complexities. The quarter car considered as a 2-DOF model, while the full car model is a 7-DOF model. The design process set to optimise the spring stiffnesses, damping coefficients and actuator PID controller gains. For optimisation, the research featured genetic algorithm optimisation technique to obtain a balanced response of the vehicle as evaluated from the displacement, velocity and acceleration of sprung and unsprung masses along with different human comfort and vehicle performance criteria. The results revealed that the active suspension system with optimised spring stiffness, damping coefficients and PID gains demonstrated the superior riding comfort and road holding compared to a passive suspension system.

Abstract

Endoscopic endonasal surgery is a minimal invasive surgery that has been used to dissect pituitary gland tumour via curettes with the help of endoscope. However, this type of surgery has a high risk of failure because curettes may cause damages to blood vessels and optical nerves that lead to more complication for the patient. The aim of this study is to develop a new technique to dissect the tumour by using liquid jet. A series of experimental tests have been performed on animal tissue to study the effect of liquid pressure and nozzle diameter on dissecting and cutting the tissue. Continuous / pulsed liquid jet used with variable nozzle diameters, distances, pressures and angles. The study concluded with promising results on liquid jet to dissect hypophysis tumour and preserving fine blood vessels and optical nerve located near the pituitary gland. 20. The mechanical study of double-tunnel-double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstructive surgery : graft and tibial/femoral channel performance

Abstract

This is an interdisciplinary research project in which the methods of biomechanical and design engineering are focused upon a problem in orthopaedics. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the major ligament in the knee and is often torn during athletic competition as well as every day activity. The ACL is made up of two functional bundles, which help to stabilize the knee. Until recently, ACL reconstruction only replaced one of these bundles; however, research shows that both bundles should be replaced to more fully restore normal knee functionality. The aim of the research was, therefore, to evaluate the mechanical aspects of the double-tunnel-double-bundle ACL reconstruction technique. The research was directed towards designing a new and improved surgical device to improve ACL reconstruction: The current study used a computational model and experimental testing to explore the mechanical parameters of the tendon graft and knee bones to investigate the effects of double tunnel drilling in tibia and femur during ACL reconstruction. The thesis presents the findings of research into three aspects of double-tunnel-double-bundle ACL reconstruction. The first aspect of the study involves clinical and computational analysis of a single-tunnel-singlebundle (SB) ACL reconstructed knee with a double-tunnel-double-bundle (DB) ACL reconstructed example. The study tried to show the advantage of the DB technique over the conventional SB technique. The anatomical geometries of both SB and DB examples were used to create a finite element model and investigate the relative merits of single and double tunnelling, the variations of graft pretension, and tunnel placement on bone stress. The experimental and computational results of both methods were compared and discussed. The second study investigated whether tripling a tendon when using suspensory fixation provides inferior graft strength and a greater cyclical elongation than a doubled tendon graft with suspensory fixation. The tensile stress was found to be lower in the third strand than in the doubled portion. The study was focussed on the mechanical assessment of two different methods of tripling tendons when using suspensory fixation. The third aspect of the study focussed on the design of a new device for fixation of the femoral tripled tendon graft in DB ACL reconstruction technique. The study describes a series of designs and prototypes that were iteratively developed and experimentally tested, leading to a novel tripled tendon graft device. The function of the new device was compared with the conventional methods and tested with a number of animal tendons and bones. The new device with a tripled tendon graft resulted in higher pull-out strength and less graft elongation than that seen using a conventional tripling method.

Abstract

This work focuses on the design of a hybrid proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) solution for any micro vehicle such as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). A hydrogen fuel cell can provide extended operation, low emissions, and a highly efficient form of energy storage compared with alternative methods, while a battery can be used as an additional energy storage system to support the transient and higher loads required by the UAV, which are not suitable for normal fuel cell operation. The choice of hydrogen storage is one of the main challenges in using hydrogen as an energy carrier. The current study discusses a range of hydrogen storage technologies and provides a methodology for selection for a given application. A sizing design methodology for a hybrid fuel cell system is proposed. Then, it is applied to a case study to demonstrate its implementation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The current study investigated the influence of incorporation of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) on quasi-static behavior of composite and fiber metal laminate (FML) panels. The unmodified and modified composite specimens and FML panels with 2/1 configuration were fabricated using a hand lay-up method and investigated through a quasi-static punch and indentation testing. The two sets of tests were conducted with a flat-ended indenter and the loading conditions were the same for all samples, except support spans which were varied. Following experimental testing, possible damages at the punch region were closely investigated and localized and global damages were observed. The results revealed that adding 0.2 wt% GNPs improved the strength and fracture toughness of specimens by delaying the failure modes. On the contrary, GNPs made the bonding between the aluminum and composite interface to weaken.

Abstract

Mechanical properties and manufacturing processes of Glass Fiber/Polypropylene (GF/PP) composites for application of flexible internal long bone fracture fixation plates have been investigated. PP/Short Chopped Glass Fiber (PPSCGF), PP/Long Glass Fiber (PPLGF) and PP/Long Glass Fiber Yarn (PPLGFY) were used in fabrication of the fixation plates. The PPSCGF and PPLGF plates were made by the heat-compressing process and Three-dimensional (3D) printing method was used to make the PPLGFY ones. The values of Young’s modulus, tensile strength, flexural modulus and strength, and impact strength of the PPSCGF in the fiber longitudinal direction were found to be [Formula: see text]GPa, [Formula: see text]MPa, [Formula: see text]GPa, [Formula: see text]MPa and [Formula: see text]kJ/m2, respectively. Where, these values for the PPLGF were to [Formula: see text]GPa, [Formula: see text]MPa, [Formula: see text]GPa, [Formula: see text]MPa, and [Formula: see text]kJ/m2 and for the PPLGFY were to [Formula: see text]GPa, [Formula: see text]MPa, [Formula: see text]GPa, [Formula: see text]MPa and [Formula: see text]kJ/m2. These have been found to be in close agreement with the human bone properties. Furthermore, the strength and modulus values of the plates were reasonable to be used as a bone implant applicable for bone fracture reconstructions. Hence, the study concluded that the GF/PP composites are useful for load-bearing during daily activities and would be recommended as a choice in orthopedic fixation plate applications. It will help the researchers for development of new fixation designs and the clinicians for better patient’s therapy in future.
