The study investigates how interactional metadiscourse resources are used to articulate and construct gender identity among ESL learners in Malaysia. The main purpose of the study is to provide language practitioners with empirical data of how gender is projected in the academic writings of ESL learners and to what extent learners’ writings are affected by their gender. The data can then be utilised for the design and development of more effective academic writing courses in Malaysia. Quantitative and qualitative analyses were performed on the similarities and differences in the use of interactional metadiscourse resources, namely; hedges, boosters, attitude markers, engagement markers and self mentions between male and female ESL learners involved in the study. The findings of the quantitative analyses show no obvious differences in the writing style of female and male writers in the study, while the qualitative findings reveal slight differences in the way writers position themselves in the reader/writer interaction and in the expression of agreement statement. Extended Abstract An exploration well was drilled into a fault-lean 3-way-dip closure along the proven Miri-Rasau anticline. The trapping fault has the largest throw in its central part and dies out laterally and downward. However, we discovered 350m of net hydrocarbon column in six thick sandstones trapped only by the lower part of the fault where its throw was minimal. The throw at the deepest discovery is not clear on seismic but is recognizable only by bends of seismic events. Since the fault throw is smaller than the sandstone thickness, extensive sand to sand juxtaposition is expected unless there is a continuous clay smear. This study aims to evaluate the mechanism of fault trap using available quantitative methods. New 3D seismic data acquired after the discovery was interpreted in detail around the fault block and careful editing was made for depth converted maps to establish the detailed framework model. A lithology (Vsh) model was also established based on well/seismic data utilizing a geostatistic method. First, juxtaposition across the fault was identified based on the 3D model. Second, quantitative fault sealing capacity analyses for Shale Gouge Ratio (SGR) and Shale Smearing Factor (SSF) were performed along individual fault planes using fault throw and Vsh at each cell using Structural and Fault Analysis (RDR) module in Petrel (Schlumberger TM). Third, the SGR model was then converted to a maximum potential hydrocarbon-column height (HCH).

Dysregulations of RNA A-to-I editing are associated with developmental defects in mouse and human diseases. Although several methods of identifying RNA A-to-I editing sites are currently available, most of the critical editing targets responsible for the important biological functions of adenosine deaminases that act on RNA (ADARs) remain unknown. Here we report a modified I-specific cleavage method that improves the quality of the RNA product. Preliminary microarray comparison of RNAs subjected to I-specific cleavage or mock digestion reported 165 genes that showed more than 0.2-fold reductions due to the cleavage. Six of the 165 genes were randomly selected for further verification, and three were verified to be targets of I-specific cleavage. This method may provide an alternative method of identifying novel RNA A-to-I editing sites using a microarray and facilitate the inquiry into the roles of RNA A-to-I editing in various biological processes.
