8. Gel based on modified chitosan for oil spill cleanup.

Abstract

A method has been developed for obtaining a polymer porous gel and coating based on nontoxic and environmentally friendly components: chitosan, citral, and glutaraldehyde. The chemical structure and morphology of the polymer gel were investigated by infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The contact angles were determined using a goniometer, and the water and oil absorption of the gel were determined by the gravimetric method based on changes in the gel mass. Measurement of the contact angle θ of transmission oil and water drops on the coating surface showed the hydrophobic nature of the coating (θ = 90° for water and θ = 0° for oil). Study of the sorption properties of the resulting gel showed high sorption capacity with respect to transmission oil (9.05 kg/kg) and low sorption capacity with respect to water (2.46 kg/kg). It was found that after oil desorption from the loaded aerogel, it can be reused. The potential possibility of recycling the spent gel through its biodegradation in the soil was shown. Because of the excellent sorption capacity, high porosity, low density, and soil degradability, the developed gel has a great potential for application in the field of environmental purification from oil pollution. 30. Synthesis of oligomeric epoxycyclotriphosphazenes and their properties as reactive flame-retardants for epoxy resins

Abstract

Hydroxyaryloxycyclophosphazenes containing 2–4 OH groups have been synthesized by the substitution of chlorine atoms of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene via the reaction with sodium phenolates of halogenophenols followed by the interaction with sodium monophenolate of diphenylolpropane. Oligoepoxyphosphazenes (OEPs) with molecular masses up to 2000 and the contents of epoxy groups, phosphorus, and halogens atoms about 5–8, 5–8, and 5–11%, respectively, have been obtained via the interaction of the aforementioned phosphazenes with epichlorohydrin. The curing of the OEPs with amines or acid anhydrides gives rise to the formation of self-extinguishing composites. The incorporation of the OEPs (5–75 wt %) into commercial epoxy resins followed by their curing, results in the formation of composites with excellent nonflammability or capability of self-quenching, and good dielectric, heat resistant and mechanical properties. It has been established that mixtures of common epoxides with different amounts of the OEPs can be synthesized by a “single-reactor” method.

Abstract

Nanoscale hybrid carboxy-phenoxycyclotriphosphazenes are of a strong interest for the polymer chemistry. They can be used as modifiers for various polymer compositions needed to improve their thermostability. Novel crystal nanoscale carboxyphenoxycyclotriphosphazenes were synthesized from hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene. Phosphazene cycle deformation was observed in these compounds. It was found out that these compounds possess considerable thermal and chemical resistance, and some of them are compatible with a variety of polymeric binders. The structures were studied by such methods as ¹H NMR, 31P NMR. Their thermal properties were clarified by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetric methods (DSC). Corresponding carboxy-phenoxycyclotriphosphazenes are obtained by oxidation of aryloxycyclophosphazenes containing as substituents hydroxybenzaldehyde isomeric groups or mixtures of these groups with other aromatic radicals. It was suggested that they can be used as modifiers for various polymer compositions needed to improve their thermostability. Thermal characteristics of these materials were studied. Abstract

Binders, or tackifiers, have become widespread in the production of new composite materials by liquid composite molding (LCM) techniques due to their ability to stabilize preforms during laying-up and impregnation, as well as to improve fracture toughness of the obtained composites, which is very important in aviation, automotive, ship manufacturing, etc. Furthermore, they can be used in modern methods of automatic laying of dry fibers into preforms, which significantly reduces the labor cost of the manufacturing process. In this article, we review the existing research from the 1960s of the 20th century to the present days in the field of creation and properties of binders used to bond various layers of preforms in the manufacturing of composite materials by LCM methods to summarize and synthesize knowledge on these issues. Different binders based on epoxy, polyester, and a number of other resins compatible with the corresponding polymer matrices are considered in the article. The influence of binders on the preforming process, various properties of obtained preforms, including compaction, stability, and permeability, as well as the main characteristics of composite materials obtained by various LCM methods and the advantages and disadvantages of this technology have been also highlighted.
