Spatial information on forest composition is invaluable for achieving scientific, ecological, and management objectives and for monitoring multiple changes in forest ecosystems. The increased flow of optical satellite data provides new opportunities to improve tree species mapping. However, the accuracy of such maps is affected by training data, and in particular on the homogeneity of individual classes. Thus, we evaluated the effect of data homogeneity in tree species classification. We performed tree species classification by considering different ways to partition data into tree species classes. The class sets considered were (i) only mixed coniferous and mixed deciduous forest classes, (ii) single-species classes, (iii) single-species, mixed coniferous and mixed deciduous classes, and (iv) single-species, mixed coniferous and mixed deciduous classes and a true mixed class. Using data from the Swedish National Forest Inventory, we varied the threshold that defined dominating species. Tree species were classified for a study area in central Sweden using Sentinel-2 data and two classification approaches: Bayesian inference and random forest (RF). Images were selected by class separability and the most informative images based on variable selection with RF. The most informative images tended to be selected by both methods. However, in forests with tree species of similar spectral behaviour, image selection on the basis of class separability was found to be more reliable. More accurate classification results were achieved as the number of classes decreased and the threshold of plot purity increased. The Bayesian classification approach of only mixed coniferous and mixed deciduous classes gave the highest OA, always greater than 90%. When discriminating between pure plots of Birch (Betula spp.), Spruce (Picea abies), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), the best OA values were 84% for Bayesian and 80% for RF. The role of forests in providing multiple goods and services has been recognized worldwide. In such a context, reliable spatial predictions of forest attributes such as tree volume and current increment are fundamental for conducting forest monitoring, improving restoration programs, and supporting decision-making processes. This article presents the methodology and the results of the wall-to-wall spatialization of the growing stock volume and the current annual increment measured in 273 plots of data of the Italian National Forest Inventory over an area of more than 3260 km2 in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region (Northeast Italy). To this aim, a random forest model was tested using as predictors 4 spectral indices from Sentinel-2, a high-resolution Canopy Height Model derived from LiDAR, and geo-morphological data. According to the Leave One Out cross-validation procedure, the model for the growing stock shows an R2 and an RMSE% of 0.67 and 41%, respectively. Instead, an R2 of 0.47 and an RMSE% of 57% were obtained for the current annual increment. The validation with an independent dataset further improved the models' performances, yielding significantly higher R2 values of 0.84 and 0.83 for volume and for increment, respectively. Our results underline a relatively higher importance of LiDAR-derived metrics compared to other covariates in estimating both attributes, as they were even twice as important as vegetation indices for growing stock. Carbon assimilation and wood production are influenced by environmental conditions and endogenous factors, such as species auto-ecology, age, and hierarchical position within the forest structure. Disentangling the intricate relationships between those factors is more pressing than ever due to climate change's pressure. We employed the 3D-CMCC-FEM model to simulate undisturbed forests of different ages under four climate change (plus one no climate change) Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) scenarios from five Earth system models. In this context, carbon stocks and increment were simulated via total carbon woody stocks and mean annual increment, which depends mainly on climate trends. We find greater differences among different age cohorts under the same scenario than among different climate scenarios under the same age class. Increasing temperature and changes in precipitation patterns led to a decline in above-ground biomass in spruce stands, especially in the older age classes. On the contrary, the results show that beech forests will maintain and even increase C-storage rates under most RCP scenarios. Scots pine forests show an intermediate behavior with a stable stock capacity over time and in different scenarios but with decreasing mean volume annual increment. In European mountains most beech forest areas have been managed for timber production. This practice has reduced the availability of biomass for the whole forest-dwelling species assemblage and of deadwood for the saproxylic community. Despite most of Italy's beech stands having a long history of management, its effects on forest species remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we studied beetle abundance and diversity in five beech-dominated forests with increasing management intensity in central Italy's Apennines (Tuscany). We assessed if forests with similar management intensity exhibited comparable patterns in beetle diversity, abundance, and commonness versus rarity. Three forests were managed with even-aged shelterwood; one was managed with continuous cover forestry; and one was old-growth. We found 25 beetle families and 195 species across all sites with similar total abundance and richness. However, the representation of the most abundant families varied among sampling sites (ANOVA test: always significant for the total abundance of the most abundant families: F ≥ 2.77, d.f. = 4, p ≤ 0.038). The old-growth forest harbored more threatened species than managed sites. Saproxylic assemblages were similar between the recently cut site and the old-growth forest, and between shelterwood and continuous cover sites. While the similarity gradient among the whole species assemblages reflected geographical proximity, the similarity gradient among saproxylic assemblages reflected the successional proximity among forest management systems. Accurate measurement of forest growing stock is a prerequisite for implementing climate-smart forestry strategies. This study deals with the use of airborne laser scanning data to assess carbon stock at the tree level. It aims to demonstrate that the combined use of two unsupervised techniques will improve the accuracy of estimation supporting sustainable forest management. Based on the heterogeneity of tree height and point cloud density, we classified 31 forest stands into four complexity categories. The point cloud of each stand was further divided into three horizontal layers, improving the accuracy of tree detection at tree level for which we calculated volume and carbon stock. The average accuracy of tree detection was 0.48. The accuracy was higher for forest stands with lower tree density and higher frequency of large trees, as well as a dense point cloud (0.65). The prediction of carbon stock was higher with a bias ranging from -0.3% to 1.5% and a root mean square error ranging from 0.14% to 1.48%. Cette etude porte sur l'utilisation de donnees de balayage laser aeroporte pour evaluer le stock de carbone a l'echelle de l'arbre. Elle vise a demontrer que l'utilisation combinee de deux techniques non supervisees va ameliorer la precision de l'estimation sur laquelle s'appuie un amenagement forestier durable. Sur la base de l'heterogeneite de la hauteur des arbres et de la densite du nuage de points, nous avons classe 31 peuplements forestiers dans quatre categories de complexite. A recently proposed modelling strategy predicts the net primary production (NPP) of forest ecosystems by combining the outputs of a NDVI-driven model, Modified C-Fix, and a bio-geochemical model, BIOME-BGC. This combination strategy takes into account the effects of forest disturbances but still assumes the presence of a mixture of differently aged trees. The application of this strategy to even-aged forests, therefore, requires a methodological advancement aimed at properly modifying the modelling of main ecosystem processes. In particular, the adaptation of the method to even-aged forests is based on the use of high-spatial-resolution airborne laser scanning (ALS) datasets, which yields green and woody biomass estimates that regulate the simulation of photosynthetic and respiratory processes, respectively. This approach was experimented in a Mediterranean study area, San Rossore Regional Park (Central Italy), which is covered by even-aged pine stands in different development phases. The modelling strategy is driven by MODIS NDVI images and meteorological data across five years (2011–2015), which are combined with estimates of forest canopy cover and height obtained from ALS data taken in 2015. This allows the production of stand NPP estimates, which, when converted into respective current annual increment (CAI) values, reasonably reproduce the age dependency of the available ground observations. The CAI estimates also show a highly significant correlation with these observations (r = 0.773) and moderate error levels (RMSE = 2.03 m3 ha−1 year−1, MBE = −0.45 m3 ha−1 year−1). These results confirm the potential of the modified simulation method to yield accurate high-spatial-resolution NPP estimates, which can offer valuable insights into C cycling and storage, in even-aged forests. Remote sensing products are typically assessed using a single accuracy estimate for the entire map, despite significant variations in accuracy across different map areas or classes. Estimating per-pixel uncertainty is a major challenge for enhancing the usability and potential of remote sensing products. This paper introduces the dataDriven open access tool, a novel statistical design-based approach that specifically addresses this issue by estimating per-pixel uncertainty through a bootstrap resampling procedure. Leveraging Sentinel-2 remote sensing data as auxiliary information, the capabilities of the Google Earth Engine cloud computing platform, and the R programming language, dataDriven can be applied in any world region and variables of interest. In this study, the dataDriven tool was tested in the Rincine forest estate study area—eastern Tuscany, Italy—focusing on volume density as the variable of interest. The average volume density was 0.042, corresponding to 420 m3 per hectare. The estimated pixel errors ranged between 93 m3 and 979 m3 per hectare and were 285 m3 per hectare on average. The ability to produce error estimates for each pixel in the map is a novel aspect in the context of the current advances in remote sensing and forest monitoring and assessment. It constitutes a significant support in forest management applications and also a powerful communication tool since it informs users about areas where map estimates are unreliable, at the same time highlighting the areas where the information provided via the map is more trustworthy. Accurate structural information about forests, including canopy heights and diameters, is crucial for quantifying tree volume, biomass, and carbon stocks, enabling effective forest ecosystem management, particularly in response to changing environmental conditions. Since late 2018, NASA's Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) mission has monitored global canopy structure using a satellite Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) instrument. While GEDI has collected billions of LiDAR shots across a near-global range (between 51.6°N and >51.6°S), their spatial distribution remains dispersed, posing challenges for achieving complete forest coverage. This study proposes and evaluates an approach that generates high-resolution canopy height maps by integrating GEDI data with Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and topographical ancillary data through three machine learning (ML) algorithms: random forests (RF), gradient tree boost (GB), and classification and regression trees (CART). To achieve this, the secondary aims included the following: (1) to assess the performance of three ML algorithms, RF, GB, and CART, in predicting canopy heights, (2) to evaluate the performance of our canopy height maps using reference canopy height from canopy height models (CHMs), and (3) to compare our canopy height maps with other two existing canopy height maps. RF and GB were the top-performing algorithms, achieving the best 13.32% and 16% root mean squared error for broadleaf and coniferous forests, respectively. Validation of the proposed approach revealed that the 100th and 98th percentile, followed by the average of the 75th, 90th, 95th, and 100th percentiles (AVG), were the most accurate GEDI metrics for predicting real canopy heights. The quantification of tree-related microhabitats (TreMs) and multi-taxon biodiversity is pivotal to the implementation of forest conservation policies, which are crucial under the current climate change scenarios. We assessed the capacity of Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) data to quantify biodiversity indices related to both forest beetle and bird communities and TreMs, calculating the species richness and types of saproxylic and epixylic TreMs using the Shannon index. As biodiversity predictors, 240 ALS-derived metrics were calculated: 214 were point-cloud based, 14 were pixel-level from the canopy height model, and 12 were RGB spectral statistics. We used the random forests algorithm to predict species richness and the Shannon diversity index, using the field plot measures as dependent variables and the ALS-derived metrics as predictors for each taxon and TreMs type. The final models were used to produce wall-to-wall maps of biodiversity indices. The Shannon index produced the best performance for each group considered, with a mean difference of −6.7%. Likewise, the highest R2 was for the Shannon index (0.17, against 0.14 for richness). Our results confirm the importance of ALS data in assessing forest biodiversity indicators that are relevant for monitoring forest habitats. Accurate estimates of canopy structure like canopy cover (CC), Leaf Area Index (LAI), crown volume (Vcr), as well as tree and stand structure like stem volume (V_st) and basal area (G), are considered essential measures to manage poplar plantations effectively as they are correlated with the growth rate and the detection of possible stress. This research exploits the possibility of developing a precision forestry application using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), terrestrial digital camera and traditional field measurements to monitor poplar plantation variables. We set up the procedure using explanatory variables from the Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix textural metrics (Entropy, Variance, Dissimilarity and Contrast) calculated based on UAV multispectral imagery. Our results show that the GCLM texture derived by multispectral ortomosaic provides adequate explanatory variables to predict poplar plantation characteristics related to plants' canopy and stand structure. The evaluation of the models targeting the different poplar plantation variables (i.e. Vcr, G_ha, Vst_ha, CC and LAI) with the four GLCM explanatory variables (i.e. Entropy, Variance, Dissimilarity and Contrast) consistently higher or equal resulted to R² ≥0.86.
