Abstract

The paper presents results of experimental laboratory-scale research on the influence of the AlZn5,7MgCu alloy thermal processing mode. Two types of aging heat treatment were studied, namely: a natural aging and an artificial aging treatment. For each of the two types of technological heat treatment, the change of the mechanical properties was monitored according to the parameters of the aging procedure. The experimental research of this paper highlights the advantage of artificial aging as compared to natural aging, but this advantage must also be seen in terms of the costs implied by the two types of treatment.

Abstract

Objectives: Rituximab is an effective treatment in patients with established rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The objective of the IMAGE study was to determine the efficacy of rituximab in the prevention of joint damage and its safety in combination with methotrexate (MTX) in patients initiating treatment with MTX. Methods: In this double-blind randomised controlled phase III study, 755 MTX-naïve patients with active RA were randomly assigned to MTX alone, rituximab 2×500 mg + MTX or rituximab 2×1000 mg + MTX. The primary end point at week 52 was the change in joint damage measured using a Genant-modified Sharp score. Results: 249, 249 and 250 patients were randomly assigned to MTX alone, rituximab 2×500 mg + MTX or rituximab 2×1000 mg + MTX, respectively. At week 52, treatment with rituximab 2×1000 mg + MTX compared with MTX alone was associated with a reduction in progression of joint damage (mean change in total modified Sharp score 0.359 vs 1.079; p=0.0004) and an improvement in clinical outcomes (ACR50 65% vs 42%; p

32. Growth of Nanosized Calcite through Gas−Solid Carbonation of Nanosized Portlandite under Anisobaric Conditions

Abstract

The gas−solid carbonation of nanosized portlandite was experimentally investigated using a static bed reactor under anisobaric conditions. The effects of initial CO2pressure (10−40 bar), reaction temperature (30 and 60 °C), and relative humidity were investigated. Three steps of the carbonation process were determined: (1) instantaneous CO2mineralization during CO2injection period. From 25 to 40 wt % of initial portlandite grains were transformed into calcite during the CO2injection period (from 0.9 to 2 min). (2) Fast CO2mineralization after gas injection period (<5 h) followed by (3) a slow CO2mineralization until an equilibrium state (<24 h). The results revealed high efficiency from portlandite-to-calcite transformation (>95%). For this case, the mineralization of CO2does not form a protective carbonate layer around the reacting particles of portlandite as typically observed by other gas−solid carbonation methods. This method could be efficiently performed to produce nanosized calcite. Moreover, the separation of calcite particles from the fluid phase is most simple compared with precipitation methods. A kinetic pseudo-second-order model was satisfactorily used to describe the three CO2mineralization steps except for the carbonation reaction initiated at 40 bar. In this latter case, a kinetic pseudo-first-order model was satisfactorily used; indicating that the slow CO2mineralization step appears less significant during the carbonation process.

33. Fast Precipitation of Acicular Goethite from Ferric Hydroxide Gel under Moderate Temperature (30 and 70 °C)

Abstract

The present study describes a simple and novel synthesis route for submicrometric acicular goethite (α-FeOOH) using high OH/Fe molar ratio (=5) and moderate temperature (30 and 70 °C). Two different alkaline sources (NaOH and Ca(OH)2) and two iron(III) sources (FeCl3·6H2O and Fe(NO3)3.9H2O) were investigated. FESEM, XRD, FTIR, N2sorption isotherms, color evolution, and pH monitoring have been used to determine the formation mechanism, the particle size, specific surface area, and morphology of goethite particles. Three pH regions were determined during goethite formation, and each of them was qualitatively associated to (I) the formation of a ferric hydroxide gel, leading to acid conditions (pH < 2.5); (II) the spontaneous nucleation of goethite, leading to alkaline conditions (pH > 11) and fine sedimentable particles; and (III) the growth of goethite in alkaline conditions (11 < pH < 13.5). Both the temperature and the Fe(III) source have a significant effect on the particle size, specific surface area, and morphology of goethite. High acicular goethite particles (<1 μm in length, moderate specific surface area, SBET= 31.2 m2/g) were produced after 7 h of reaction at 70 °C, while about 24 h of reaction are required to produce low acicular goethite particles (<0.5 μm in length, high specific surface area, SBET= 133.8 m2/g) at 30 °C, using in both cases iron chloride. When Ca(OH)2particles are used as alkaline source, a complex mineral composite with high specific surface area (87.3 m2/g) was synthesized; it was mainly composed of unreacted Ca(OH)2coated with nanosized particles (possibly amorphous iron hydroxide), calcium iron oxide chloride hydrate, and calcite. Novel conditions to prepare uniform goethite particles, possibly with high potential as adsorbents or pigments, have been established.

The aim of the current pocket guide is to offer a comprehensive set of recommendations on the use of skin prick tests in allergic rhinitis–conjunctivitis and asthma in daily practice. This pocket guide is meant to give simple answers to the most frequent questions raised by practitioners in Europe, including ‘practicing allergists’, general practitioners and any other physicians with special interest in the management of allergic diseases. It is not a long or detailed scientific review of the topic. However, the recommendations in this pocket guide were compiled following an in-depth review of existing guidelines and publications, including the 1993 European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology position paper, the 2001 ARIA document and the ARIA update 2008 (prepared in collaboration with GA2LEN). The recommendations cover skin test methodology and interpretation, allergen extracts to be used, as well as indications in a variety of settings including paediatrics and developing countries.

Abstract

Special Issue: 74th Annual Meeting of the Meteoritical Society, August 8-12, 2011, London, U.K.; International audience; Carbonaceous chondrites are considered as amongst the most primitive Solar System samples available. One of their primitive characteristics is their enrichment in volatile elements.This includes hydrogen, which is present in hydrated and hydroxylated minerals. More precisely, the mineralogy is expected to be dominated by phyllosilicates in the case of CM chondrites, and by Montmorillonite type clays in the case of CI. Here, in order to characterize and quantify the abundance of lowtemperature minerals in carbonaceous chondrites, we performed thermogravimetric analysis of matrix fragments of Tagish Lake, Murchison and Orgueil.
