Abstract

The energy sustainability of producing biofuel from wet bioresidues needs proper energy integration to ensure sustainable exploitation. This study analyses the potentials of combined hydrogen, heat, power, and LOHC (Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier) production from the residues of citrus juice production, at a factory scale. In this work, the main constituents of LOHC are DME (Dimethyl ether) and methanol. The proposed system is based on air-steam gasification and direct CO2-to-DME process, integrated with hydrogen purification and a CHP unit. The DME reactor is operated at 30 bar in the temperature range 493-533 K. A thermodynamic model, which is validated experimentally, simulates the proposed polygeneration system. In addition to the potential amount of biofuel, hydrogen production, and net power production, the energy and exergy efficiencies are analyzed. Despite the variation of LOHC yield with the temperature, the results show that the whole system’s energy efficiency is not affected, while the small difference among the exergy efficiencies is negligible.

Abstract

The growing need to reduce the environmental impact of the modern lifestyle imposes a continuous development of novel technologies aimed at a severe reduction of pollutant emissions in order to ensure a tolerable quality of life in metropolitan areas. Among potential alternatives, particular attention has been recently addressed toward the exploitation of residual biomass and wastes as sources for syngas production by thermo-chemical processes for heat and power production. 23. SOFCOM Project: Proof-of-Concept of WWTU Plant Feeding a SOFC CHP System Integrated with CO2 Removal

Abstract

SOFCOM is an applied research project (FCH JU Grant Agreement 278798) devoted to demonstrate the technical feasibility, the efficiency and environmental advantages of CHP plants based on SOFC fed by different typologies of biogenous primary fuels (locally produced), integrated by a process for the CO2 separation from the anode exhaust gases. The research activity is devoted to the scientific, technical and economic management of the proof-of-concept of a complete energy systems based on SOFCs, integrated in a waste water treatment plant (WWTU), with CO2 management. Several issues are addressed, like high efficiency integration designs, impact of the fuel pollutants on the SOFC and fuel processing units operation, gas cleaning, carbon sequestration module, operation in CHP configuration, maintenance and repair strategies, lessons learned for pre-normative issues and scale-up analysis. The paper develops general presentation of the SOFCOM project, and outlines the WWTU-SOFC-CO2 management demonstration plant.

24. Hydrogen Production from Bio-Ethanol on Rh Based Catalysts

Abstract

The influence of metal precursor on the catalytic behaviour of Rh/MgO catalysts in the steam reforming of ethanol was investigated. High dispersed catalysts were obtained in the case of use an inorganic precursor like Rh-nitrate. Catalytic tests performed at molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) operative conditions (TR = 923 K) clearly shown that reaction under study is a structure sensitive reaction since the turnover frequency (TOF) significantly increases as the Rh mean particle size increases too. Catalysts prepared by using Rh- acethyl-acetonate as precursor shown a higher stability since they are in general less affected by coke formation. Thermodynamic consideration made on the basis of the outlet composition of reaction stream, allowed to calculate the experimental equilibrium constant (Kexp) for i) methane steam reforming (MSR) , ii) water gas shift (WGS), iii) methane pyrolisys and iv) Bouduard reactions.

Abstract

An activated biochar coming from pyrolysis of dead Posidonia oceanica residues has been tested as adsorbent material for Cd2+, Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions. The biomass, the activated and the non activated biochars were previously characterized by using several instrumental techniques. The pH of metal ion solution in kinetic and thermodynamic adsorption experiments was fixed at 5 whilst, the dependence on ionic medium, ionic strength and temperature have been evaluated carrying out batch experiments at different experimental conditions. Differential Pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy have been used to measure the metal ion concentration in the solutions. Several kinetic and isotherm equations were used to fit experimental data. The thermodynamic parameters ΔG, ΔH and ΔS of Pb2+ adsorption process were calculated by using Gibbs and van't Hoff equations. A speciation study of the Pb2+ ion was also done in order to evaluate the influence of ionic medium and ionic strength on the adsorption process. Information about adsorption mechanism was obtained from the analysis of thermodynamic parameters of adsorption and of the results of metal ions speciation and biochar characterization.
