Abstract

The last two decades have witnessed significant progress in the development of severe plastic deformation techniques to produce ultrafine-grained materials with new and superior properties. This review examines works and achievements related to the low-temperature superplasticity of ultrafine-grained aluminum alloys. The examples are provided of the possibility to observe low-temperature superplasticity in aluminum alloys at temperatures less than 0.5 Tmelt and even at room temperature, and herein, we demonstrate the cases of achieving high ductility and high strength in aluminum alloys from processing utilizing severe plastic deformation. Special emphasis is placed on recent studies of the formation of segregations of alloying elements at grain boundaries in UFG Al alloys and their influence on the development of grain boundary sliding and manifestation of low-temperature superplasticity. In addition, the current status and innovative potential of low-temperature superplasticity in aluminum alloys are observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

18. Estimation of Shear Modulus and Hardness of High-Entropy Alloys Made from Early Transition Metals Based on Bonding Parameters

Abstract

The relationship between the tendencies towards rigidity (measured by shear modulus, G) and hardness (measured by Vickers hardness, HV) of early transition metal (ETM)-based refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEA) and bond parameters (i.e., valence electron concentration (VEC), enthalpy of mixing (?H-mix)) was investigated. These bond parameters, VEC and ?H-mix, are available from composition and tabulated data, respectively. Based on our own data (9 samples) and those available from the literatures (47 + 27 samples), it seems that for ETM-based RHEAs the G and HV characteristics have a close correlation with the bonding parameters. The room temperature value of G and HV increases with the VEC and with the negative value of ?H-mix. Corresponding equations were deduced for the first time through multiple linear regression analysis, in order to help design the mechanical properties of ETM refractory high-entropy alloys., QC 20230425

Abstract

In the last three decades, several severe plastic deformation (SPD) procedures have been developed and applied in materials science to create bulk, ultrafine-grained (UFG) structures. As a consequence of the SPD, not only submicron and even nanometer grain sizes can be obtained, but also new grain boundaries with non-equilibrium structures in a material may be formed. Therefore, both the strength and ductility of the UFG materials can change significantly compared to the coarse-grained counterparts. This review is focused on unusual mechanical behaviors of UFG Al and Al alloys, associated with grain boundary structure and segregations which are responsible for the modification of the Hall-Petch relationship and the so-called size-effect for UFG structure. Unusually high strain rate sensitivity, intensive grain boundary sliding and superplasticity at low temperature are described and surveyed. Abstract

The present investigation is directed to phase transitions in the equimolar NiCoFeCrGa high entropy alloy, which is a mixture of face-centered cubic (FCC) and body-centered cubic (BCC) crystalline phases. The microstructure of the samples was investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS), transmission electron microscopy-based energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), as well as X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. Based on the phases observed in different temperature ranges, a sequence of the phase transitions can be established, showing that in a realistic process, when freely cooling the sample with the furnace from high to room temperature, a microstructure having spinodal-like decomposition can also be expected. The elemental mapping and magnetic behaviors of this decomposed structure are also studied.
