Introduction: As the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) gains popularity among Chinese young people, it has undergone a gradual transition from being perceived as a personality assessment tool to being regarded as a social label. The objective of this study was to ascertain whether the use of the MBTI as a social label has an impact on social anxiety among Chinese youth groups. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted on social media platforms to recruit Chinese youth aged 18 to 35. A total of 247 males and 222 females participated in the study, and the data was analyzed quantitatively using SPSS software and the Process macro plugin. Results: The study found no strong correlation between MBTI as a social label and social anxiety. Moreover, this study introduced ego identity, belonging, and impression management as mediating variables and found that, under the influence of ego identity and impression management, the use of MBTI has a significant impact on social anxiety. Discussion: The research reveals the complex role of MBTI among Chinese youth and provides a new perspective for understanding the impact of online social labels on the mental health of youth groups. Of course, this study also has limitations in terms of sample size and variable control. Life satisfaction is vital for a smooth transition to emerging adulthood. However, research on age and gender-related fluctuations in life satisfaction has yielded inconclusive and culture-specific results, which necessitates further investigation in more diverse contexts, including the Chinese culture. Despite the attribution theory and the value-as-a-moderator model highlighting the significance of achievement attribution in this period characterized by the pursuit of success, little is known about the specific impact of internal and external achievement attribution on the development of life satisfaction. This study examined life satisfaction trajectories from adolescence to emerging adulthood and explored the moderating effects of gender and achievement attribution, using five waves of data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). The sample consists of 504 youth (52.2% female), whose life satisfaction was tracked from 2012 (Mage = 16.55, SD = 0.50) to 2020 (Mage = 24.56, SD = 0.50). The multilevel growth models revealed that life satisfaction increased from ages 16 to 18, peaked at age 18, fell until age 20, and then remained stable from ages 20 to 24. No significant association was found between gender or external achievement attribution and life satisfaction development. Youth with higher internal achievement attribution had a greater increase in life satisfaction from ages 16 to 18, but had a larger decrease from ages 18 to 20. Adjusting internal achievement attribution may help alleviate the vulnerability of youth experiencing declining life satisfaction when transitioning to adulthood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports a qualitative study built upon the findings from this team’s previous studies over the past two decades that identifies risk factors and guiding principles to develop a culturally sensitive practice model for Chinese youth in conflict with the law. Crime intervention for Chinese Canadian youth is under-researched. This paper reveals that Chinese youth and their parents internalize problems of systemic inequity. Their needs are not properly addressed due to model minority stereotyping. Over the last two decades, there is a shift in demographics of the Chinese community in Canada that mirrors the socio-economical changes in China over twenty years that requires cultural nuance in providing services to the Chinese community. Abstract Background Self-harm, a severe mental health concern among children and adolescents, has varying global prevalence rates. Previous studies have suggested potential associations between specific behavioral aspects of biological rhythm and self-harm risk in these populations. Objective Our study aimed to elucidate the relationship between biological rhythm patterns and the propensity of self-harm among Chinese children and adolescents using the Baoxing Youth Mental Health (BYMH) cohort. Methods We included 1883 Chinese children and adolescents from the BYMH cohort. The self-report questions used to assess biological rhythm and self-harm. We applied Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to distinguish patterns of biological rhythms. Logistic regression models were conducted to estimate the associations between biological rhythm, as well as biological rhythm patterns and risk of self-harm. Results Of the participants, 35.0% reported experiencing lifetime self-harm. PCA revealed six significantly predominant biological rhythm patterns. Elevated risks of self-harm were linked with unhealthy eating practices, daytime tiredness, and unhealthy bedtime snacking. Conversely, patterns emphasizing physical exercise, family meals for breakfast, and nutritious diet exhibited decreased self-harm propensities. These trends persisted across varied self-harm attributes, including type, recency, and frequency of self-harm. Conclusions This study underscores the critical impact of biological rhythms on self-harm risks among Chinese youth. Targeted lifestyle interventions, focusing on improved sleep and dietary habits, could serve as potent preventive measures. Our findings lay the groundwork for future longitudinal studies to further probe these associations, fostering the creation of tailored interventions to curb self-harm and enhance mental well-being in younger populations.

This study highlights the challenges of addressing abortion stigma and misinformation among Chinese youth. The research aims to fill the identified gaps by employing a grounded theory approach to qualitatively analyze the literature on sexual reproductive health and education in China. The results are synthesized into the Stigmatization and Sexual Reproductive Health Issues (S&SRHI) framework, offering a comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to stigma surrounding sexual and reproductive health education and services provision. The study recommends using a Peer-led intervention to disseminate accurate information, foster open dialogues, and reduce stigma, thus enhancing knowledge, attitudes, and access to abortion services, informing policy discussions, and guiding the design of effective sexual education programs. However, the study acknowledges limitations and highlights the need for future research to focus on evaluating the effectiveness of this approach and developing a more comprehensive and cultural context framework for addressing abortion stigma. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between the variables of the value-beliefnorm (VBN) theory and the adoption of green consumption behaviors among Chinese youth. The online survey questionnaire was distributed to a convenience sample of young Chinese consumers aged 18 e35 years through the platforms WJX and WeChat. The data collection period spanned from September to December 2022. The analysis involved a total of 1074 participants, and the statistical technique employed was partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) using Smart-PLS 4.0. Common-method bias, multivariate normality, validity, and reliability were also assessed. The results revealed that biospheric values (BV), altruistic values (AV), the new ecological paradigm (EP), awareness of consequences (AC), the ascription of responsibility (AR), and personal norms (PN) significantly and positively influenced intention toward green consumption practices (IGP), which, in turn, had a significant positive influence on the adoption of green consumption practices (AGP). Additionally, GT did not moderate the association between IGP and AGP. This study contributes to the literature on green consumption by analyzing VBN theory's influence on Chinese youth's behavior toward green consumption practices to understand and promote green behavior. This study's findings suggest that promoting ecological awareness and responsibility, developing green values and trust, and strengthening personal norms can encourage green consumption practices among Chinese youth. Entangled with wanghong (literally: popular people on the internet) and the platform economy in China, it has become trendy for Chinese youth to present themselves as they pursue visibility and monetization as vloggers on social media platforms. In this research, we do not focus on celebrities or influencers but on the regular Chinese school vloggers who present and share their everyday lives in and around the school on Bilibili, a youth-oriented video-sharing platform in China. We explore their layered identity construction that develops, influenced by the forces of cultural motivation and financial goals. Drawing from a digital ethnography, conducted between September 2019 and March 2020, and including observations of school vlogs on Bilibili and in-depth interviews with 16 Chinese school vloggers, we theorize three kinds of engagements actively practiced on Bilibili by young school vloggers. These engagements are self-presentation bricolage, self-identified branding, and community participation. By exploring the layered identity construction of these youths, this article sheds light on youth's interaction and engagements with the platform economy in contemporary China. This study investigated the relationship between childhood emotional abuse and gamebullying among youths, and the roles of mindfulness and Machiavellianism in that relationship. The study sample comprised 504 Chinese youths (female = 51.2%) who completed the Childhood Emotional Abuse Scale, Gamebullying Scale, Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, and Machiavellianism Scale. Path analysis results indicated a history of childhood emotional abuse to predict gamebullying. Mindfulness mediated the relationship with childhood emotional abuse to predict gamebullying to be lower. Machiavellianism mediated the relationship between childhood emotional abuse and gamebullying to be higher. In our sample, demographic variables, including gender and education, did not predict gamebullying. Younger youths had lower levels of gamebullying than older youths. These findings indicate a need to reduce gamebullying among youths with a history of adverse childhood events. Mindfulness healing can be used to lower the negative effects of gamebullying. Recent years have witnessed a boom of fashion blogging sharing information about clothing and cosmetics on diverse social media platforms. Constant exposure to fashion-related digital information heavily impacts the conception and behaviours of Chinese youth. Compared to the substantial studies on the impact of social media, scarce research has been conducted on how youth's cognitive processing of fashion-related digital information interacts with motivational factors to determine the subsequent behaviours. This study made an initial attempt to address this issue by exploring the successive associations between clothing motivation (amotivation, controlled, and autonomous motivation), online critical thinking (for information credibility, objectivity, and relevance), and the subsequent behavioural intention. A total of 1997 Chinese youth with diverse educational backgrounds voluntarily participated in the study. Results confirmed the direct links between clothing motivation and the behavioural intention, and these links were mediated by different online critical thinking practices. This study aimed to clarify the multidimensionality of defending by developing and validating the Adolescent Defending Behaviors Questionnaire (ADBQ) in a sample of Chinese adolescents. Results of Study 1 (N = 824, Mage = 11.25) indicated that a five-factor model, comprising (a) assertive defending, (b) aggressive defending, (c) comforting victims, (d) reporting to authority, and (e) tactical defending, yielded a good fit to the data. Study 2 (N = 1,086, Mage = 11.18) established ADBQ's reliability (α =.78–.93) and construct validity: the five defending dimensions were differentially associated with cognitive and affective empathy, aggression, sociability, peer preference, and victimization. The rise of vlogging (video blogging) culture in China has been entangled with the wanghong culture and platform economy, which creates tension between individual empowerment and structural power for vloggers. How do young Chinese vloggers construct online identities tactically to cope with the structural pressures? This dissertation explores young Chinese vloggers' practices, identities, and tactics in interaction with the social media platform Bilibili. By conducting a digital ethnography between 2018 and 2022, I argue that young Chinese vloggers tactically construct and perform their online identities to negotiate with norms, aesthetics, and regulations in the wanghong culture and platform economy. This article adopts the notions of chronotope and scalar intimacy to discuss collective identification, in particular Hanfu identity among Chinese youth in the context of contemporary Chinese nationalism. Drawing upon ethnographic interviews and observations of self-identified Hanfu fans in Beijing, China, this paper analyzes how they, through invoking and shifting back and forth across multiple spatiotemporal scales, discursively enact collective and intimate identification among individuals, among Hanfu fan groups (on a local scale), and the general Chinese population (on a larger, national scale). This paper suggests that the great ancient China chronotope (GACC) has played a crucial role in establishing continuity between the present (or other time-spaces) and the 'past,' ultimately legitimizing the inseparable link between Hanfu groups and collectives and solidifying great China and collective identity ideologies. It also demonstrates that modern Chinese youth are internalizing the Chinese nationalist ideology in order to establish a sociocultural relationship of belonging to and sharing with Chinese collectives as a way to empower themselves to cope with uncertainty. The question of the use of fashionable words as markers that contribute to the identification of social characteristics of various subjects of speech is considered. The material for the study was the texts of microblogs of the Weibo Internet platform dedicated to China. We study the use of 10 fashion words of 2021, identified by the National Center for Monitoring and Research of Language Resources. Their functioning on the Weibo Internet site is analyzed. It has been established that the majority of Weibo users belong to the younger generation. The relevance of the study is due to the desire of Chinese society to build a strong welfare state, in which a significant role is given to young people. The novelty of the work lies in the fact that earlier the analysis of fashionable words of the Chinese language in the Internet discourse as a means of characterizing the younger generation was not carried out. It is shown that fashionable words on Weibo in most cases are used in positive contexts, which can be considered as “achieving a stable development of the country”, since all microblogs are dedicated to China. The author comes to the conclusion that the topics of blogs and the nature of the use of fashionable words in youth accounts testify to the confidence of Chinese youth in their future and the future of the country.

Few empirical studies have examined the impact of the universal social services provided to ordinary youth on their resilience and psychosocial adjustment, especially youth from developing countries like China. Based on a sample of 857 high school students between the ages of 13–19 from Beijing, this article examines the pattern of social services provided to Chinese youth and the impact of these services on their resilience and positive or negative psychosocial adjustment (depression, delinquency, prosocial behavior). The results reveal that: (a) Chinese youth generally make very limited use of services but they report moderate satisfaction; (b) both frequency and satisfaction of service use significantly predicts resilience, and resilience significantly predicts lower depression and higher prosocial behavior; (c) resilience fully mediates the relationships between social service frequency/satisfaction and depression/prosocial behavior. The findings give support to the public health model of social services and reveal that building resilience is one mechanism that universal service contributes to youths' psychosocial adjustment. Future research may further investigate the relationships between social services, resilience and psychosocial adjustment in other geographical areas and time periods of China, and comparative studies between China and other countries may also be useful. Based on a large number of primary and old sources collected from China's local areas, most of which have never been exposed or researched before, this article conducts a basic-level case study dealing with the role that the Communist Youth League (CYL) played in the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)'s propaganda toward young people in the early 1950s. It revisits the CYL's institutionalized foundation among Chinese youth for promoting the work of propaganda, its unparalleled emphasis on and diversified strategies in propagating the CCP's establishment of a socialist regime, and its methods to maximize the extension of generating influences on the young people and beyond. The aim of the research is to reassess the CYL's indispensable contributions in the early 1950s in keeping young people's thoughts accord with the Party's guidelines, which should not have been ignored by researchers when examining the history of Communist China. In addition, revisiting the CYL's effective role of promoting the CCP's propaganda seven decades ago helps understand the propagandistic strategies that the CCP is using toward today's Chinese youngsters. Despite remaining inactive in youth-targeted work for several decades, since the last few years, the CYL has regained its active role as a major force in propagating the Party's latest guidelines to today's youth in China. Despite the considerable gaps over 70 years, like that between the technologies applied as propaganda tools, the essence of how the CYL contributes crucially to the CCP's propaganda remains still and is further facilitated by the most advanced Internet-based techniques. Therefore, this article provides not only valuable evidence-based references for historical studies on Communist China but also a mirror for a better understanding of China today. Many Chinese students dislike hyper-competitive public school exams but find competing in e-sports games enjoyable. Some students are perceived to game 'too much' by their parents, who, anxious about gaming's impact on their grades, send their children to treatment camps for 'Internet addiction'. This article documents parents' and student-gamers' experiences of competition in China's formal education system, online gaming, and professional e-sports. As student-gamers move between these competitive arenas, they develop counter-hegemonic understandings of what competition does and reconfigure their sense of self. Their movements reveal that, far from a symptom of neoliberal ideology, the prevalence of competition in China marks dialectical interactions between various ideologies and the lived experience of competitive practices. IntroductionThe positive relationship between future orientation and prosocial tendency has been consistently reported. However, the possible mechanism has not been examined yet. Previous research revealed the positive relationship between future orientation and meaning in life, as well as between meaning in life and prosocial tendency. Hence, it is hypothesized that the two components of meaning in life (presence of meaning and search for meaning) possibly mediate the relationship between future orientation and prosocial tendency.MethodsDuring the first half of 2020, 430 Hong Kong youths aged 15–35 (male: 30.5%; female: 69.5%) were recruited to participate an online cross-sectional survey. The survey included three scales: (1) The Scale for Measuring Adult’s Prosocialness, (2) Consideration of Future Consequence Scale, and (3) Meaning in Life Questionnaire.ResultsThe key findings showed that: (1) females had higher level of prosocial tendency than males, and (2) significant partial mediating effects of both presence of meaning and search for meaning on the relationship between future orientation and prosocial tendency. Nevertheless, the multi-group mediation model did not show significant gender difference.DiscussionThese findings implied that future-oriented and meaning-focused interventions could possibly enhance youth’s sense of meaning in everyday life and foster their meaning searching tendency, which further strengthen the positive effect of their future orientation on prosocial tendency, even during life adversities.

The current study validated the youth-reported Pediatric Symptom Checklist-Youth (PSC-Y) using a Chinese youth sample (N = 20,996). The factor structure, measurement invariance, and criterion validity were examined. First, factor analysis documented that the correlated three-factor structure, including externalizing problems, internalizing problems, and attention problems fit the data best, which aligns with the prior factor structure of the PSC-Y in other settings (e.g., teacher ratings). In addition, measurement invariance was established across gender and age groups. The latent mean differences revealed that middle and high school students and females reported more internalizing and attention problems than elementary students and males. Additionally, high school students and females were less likely to report externalizing problems than elementary students and males. Finally, the criterion validity of the PSC-Y was established using external scales assessing subjective wellbeing and prosocial behavior. Teachers, school administrators, and school psychologists can utilize the results of this study to more precisely identify youth at risk for psychosocial problems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Brief Problem Monitor (BPM) is a 19-item instrument newly developed for screening children and adolescents for emotional and behavioral problems. The aim of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the youth-report and parent-report versions of the BPM (BPM-Y and BPM-P) among Chinese youth. Data was collected from two samples: a middle school student sample (n = 1,246, girls = 516 [41.4%]) and a community youth sample from families suffering adversity (n = 383, girls = 143 [37.3%]). We conducted a series of confirmatory factor analyses to test and compare the latent structures of the BPM-Y and BPM-P. Results suggested that the three-factor model of the BPM-Y and BPM-P fit the data best. And based on the omnibus fit indices and difference between them, the items of the BPM-Y and BPM-P support measurement invariance across informants (both youth- and parent-report) for the three-factor model. Internal consistency coefficients were satisfactory (Cronbach's α =.73 ~.90). In terms of convergent validity, BPM factors and BPM scores showed expected correlations with strength and difficulties behavior, callous–unemotional traits, psychopathic traits, and social competence. In sum, our findings supported that the three-factor structuure of BPM-Y and BPM-P could be a promising instrument to screen emotional and behavioral problems in Chinese youth. Research on the role of early relationships with parents on youth's anxiety and depression, especially in collectivist societies such as China, is limited. To fill this gap, we investigated the unique role of early relationship with mothers and fathers, respectively, in Chinese youth's anxiety and depression outcomes. The participants were 347 Chinese college students from 20 provinces. They first separately rated the frequency of experiencing 13 emotions (e.g., anger) from recalling early relationships with their mothers and fathers, then completed the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale and the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale. Logistic regression was performed to determine the unique contribution of early relationships with mothers and fathers, respectively, to the participants' clinical-level anxiety and depression. Based on the final model of our logistical regression, we found that an increase in negative affective representation of early relationship with the mother was associated with a higher likelihood of clinical level anxiety (OR = 3.58; 95% CI = 1.32–9.70), while an increase in positive affective representation of early relationship with the mother was associated with a lower likelihood of clinical-level depression (OR = 0.47; 95% CI = 0.25–0.87). Furthermore, an increase in negative affective representation of early relationship with the father was associated with a higher likelihood of clinical-level anxiety (OR = 3.36; 95% CI = 1.37-8.26) and depression (OR = 3.68; 95% CI = 1.59-8.52), above and beyond their affective representation of early relationship with the mother. The study examined the effect of celebrity attractiveness, celebrity trustworthiness, and celebrity cause fit on the attitude toward green cosmetics. This was followed by the effect of brand awareness, brand associations, brand loyalty, perceived quality, brand credibility on brand equity, including the impact of attitude toward green cosmetics and brand equity on the willingness to purchase green cosmetics among of young Chinese consumers. This study adopted a cross-sectional design and collected quantitative data from 301 respondents using a structured questionnaire, which was distributed online using various social media platforms. It was found that celebrity attractiveness, celebrity trustworthiness, and celebrity cause-fit had a significant impact on the attitudes toward green cosmetic, while brand loyalty, perceived quality, and brand credibility substantially affected brand equity. Moreover, the attitudes toward green cosmetics and brand equity had a strong impact on the willingness to purchase green cosmetics. To increase the sales for green cosmetics, the advertisements for it should have appeal, trustworthiness, and cause-fit celebrities to improve consumers' attitudes and willingness to purchase green cosmetics. Finding of this study provide a guideline for green cosmetic manufacturers, to direct their resources to enhance brand loyalty, credibility, and perceived quality of the product they produce by highlighting the difference between conventional and green cosmetics. The DYH program consisted of a multi-wave survey conducted annually in the academic year 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2017/2018, and 2020/2021 to investigate the status quo of health and health-related behaviors of Chinese junior and senior high school students. A total of 99,327 students from 186 secondary schools in 17 cities of Shandong province participated in the survey. The dataset is longitudinal and consists of rich parameters in aspects of individual information, social-economic status, social interaction, nutrition and diet, psychological cognition, mental health, school adaptation, quality of life, spare-time physical activity, risk behaviors, and physical fitness evaluation results based on the National Student Physical Fitness and Health 2014. It is the first open shared dataset about Chinese adolescents' health and health-related behaviors. It would be valuable and beneficial for policy makers, educational institutions, and other stakeholders to generate or adjust the existing strategies for improving Chinese adolescents' wellbeing. Young Chinese people's reactions on social media platforms after the announcement of the 2016 Taiwan presidential election result have resonated with the Chinese government's position on cross-strait relations. Given the depoliticized ideological condition in place, the passion in the spontaneous, self-organized posting of comments and political memes and its inconsistency with the general reluctance to be politically involved in everyday life raise questions about political expectations and the underlying factors. While Chinese social media count as one of the few realms accommodating possibilities and elasticity in public discussions and collective actions in the post-Tiananmen era, the commentary and participation one finds involve the pretence and as-if-ness embedded in playfulness – the kind that conveys transgressive messages in milder tones while giving voice to scorns for, disagreements with, and parodies of the existing structure of governance. This paper probes into the approach of digital activism through online commentative spaces by examining the surge of such political comments and memes. It regards digital participation as a distinctive representation of young Chinese people's political feelings within the everyday dynamics and emphasizes the condition of active participation under the ubiquity of political scrutiny and, hence, the necessity of playfulness. The tactic termed 'playing politics digitally' is coined to capture the obedience and twists working within the structural settings, to mark the middle ground between playfulness and seriousness in the digital platform, and to underline the ephemerality and instability of the precarious participation it offers to youth today. While playfully extracting and composing nationalistic/patriotic elements amid the emergence of civic engagement and a sense of empowerment or activeness, the temporal and disposable nature of such digital participation rehearses the possibility of citizenship among young Chinese people. The study examined the effect of celebrity attractiveness, celebrity trustworthiness, and celebrity cause fit on the attitude toward green cosmetics. This was followed by the effect of brand awareness, brand associations, brand loyalty, perceived quality, brand credibility on brand equity, including the impact of attitude toward green cosmetics and brand equity on the willingness to purchase green cosmetics among of young Chinese consumers. This study adopted a cross-sectional design and collected quantitative data from 301 respondents using a structured questionnaire, which was distributed online using various social media platforms. It was found that celebrity attractiveness, celebrity trustworthiness, and celebrity cause-fit had a significant impact on the attitudes toward green cosmetic, while brand loyalty, perceived quality, and brand credibility substantially affected brand equity. Moreover, the attitudes toward green cosmetics and brand equity had a strong impact on the willingness to purchase green cosmetics. To increase the sales for green cosmetics, the advertisements for it should have appeal, trustworthiness, and cause-fit celebrities to improve consumers’ attitudes and willingness to purchase green cosmetics. Finding of this study provide a guideline for green cosmetic manufacturers, to direct their resources to enhance brand loyalty, credibility, and perceived quality of the product they produce by highlighting the difference between conventional and green cosmetics.

The BASC-3 Behavioral and Emotional Screening System Student Form (BESS-3-SF; Kamphaus & Reynolds, 2015) is a 28-item screening tool for behavioral and emotional risks among children and youth. In this study, we tested if the 26 items from the Behavior Assessment System for Children-Self Report of Personality-Third Edition (BASC-3-SRP) could function as BESS-3-SF as a screening tool among Chinese youth. Data were collected with BASC-3-SRP from 1,186 adolescents (Male: 35%) in 10 schools, which were randomly and evenly divided into two samples: Sample A and Sample B. We first conducted an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with Sample A, and then a first-order confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and a bifactor CFA with Sample B. EFA and first-order CFA suggested a five-factor structure. Bifactor analysis indicated variance explained by the general factor reached the threshold for a unidimensional interpretation. Results also suggested that cultural factors (e.g., relationship with teachers) might need to be considered in further examination of BESS-3-SF among Chinese youth. Together, our findings suggest that BESS-3-SF is a promising tool for screening general behavioral and emotional risks among Chinese youth. Background: This study investigated the natural development pattern of mindful awareness and its relation with mental health in a sample of Chinese youth.Methods: 1,483 students (57.11% boys) from fourth to ninth grade (Mage = 11.18 ± 1.78, Wave 1) participated in the study. Students participated in up to 3 waves of assessment, each spaced approximately 6 months. The data were collected by the Chinese version of the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale-Children (MAAS-C), the Chinese Version of 10-item CES-D Depression Scale (CESD-10), and the Academic Pressure subscale of Inventory of Influencing Factors of Trait Anxiety for Secondary School Students (IIFTAS).Results: Cross-sectionally, higher graders scored lower mindful awareness than lower graders. Results of latent growth curve analysis showed a slight decrease, but not at a significant level, of mindful awareness in the longitudinal measurement. Results from the parallel-process model indicated that decreases in mindful awareness significantly predicted children and adolescents' depressive emotions and academic pressure.Limitations: As a longitudinal study, the time points were insufficient and all variables were assessed by self-report measures.Conclusion: Mindful awareness might be a significant protector for youth when co-developing with mental health problems. This article examines the social impacts of urban change among a generation of people for whom it is the norm: youth in Beijing, where decades of redevelopment have led to large-scale demolition of older neighborhoods and a perpetually changing cityscape. Studies have shown that redevelopment has led to the breakdown of traditional social bonds in China's cities, and that citizens relocated from older to newer neighborhoods may feel both a heightened sense of privacy and a greatly diminished sense of attachment to their surroundings. Today's urban youth, however, were born into such rapidly evolving and increasingly privatized environments. Drawing from twelve months of ethnographic fieldwork, I explore the extent to which these youth, accustomed to privatized and digitalized home lifestyles, experience a lack of attachment to their urban environs, and illustrate how such feelings may be articulated. Ongoing urban redevelopment, taking place alongside shifts in social life facilitated by digital media, can, I argue, produce in young urban residents a sense of place characterized by learned indifference. A total of 2,820 college freshmen aged 15– 24 years were included in this study, of whom 699 (24.8%) were males and 2,121 (75.2%) were females. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Self-rating Depression Scale. Physical activity was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form. Covariates included sociodemographic, lifestyle-related, and health-related factors.Results: A total of 560 (19.9%) college students had depressive symptoms. Total physical activity levels (METs•hour/week) were positively associated with frequency of breakfast intake (p = 0.050) but no other participant characteristics. Logistic regression analysis showed that the prevalence of depressive symptoms in the highest quartile of physical activity was lower than in the lowest quartile when adjusted for sex, age, ethnicity, only child, smoking status, alcohol use, breakfast frequency, daily sleep duration, body mass index, grip strength, and the number of metabolic syndrome components (odds ratios [95% confidence intervals (CI)]: 0.75 [0.58, 0.98], p = 0.036). Furthermore, high physical activity levels of low-intensity tended to moderately correlate to lower prevalence of depressive symptoms (odds ratios [95% CI]: Q1, 0.71 [0.55, 0.91], Q2, 0.77 [0.59, 1.01], Q3, 0.75 [0.57, 0.98], p for trend = 0.037). Associations of moderate and vigorous physical activity with depressive symptoms were not found. For secondary outcomes, sex-stratified analysis showed that similar findings were only found in females, but not males.Conclusion: This study indicated that total physical activity and low-intensity physical activity were inversely associated with depressive symptoms in Chinese college students. Abstract Background Chinese youth have become more sexually active over the years, yet their behaviours of contraceptive use are influenced by socioeconomic and lifestyle factors. This study aimed to investigate the socioeconomic and lifestyle determinants of contraceptive use among Chinese college students, and to investigate quantitatively their reasons for choosing different contraceptive methods. Methods The study used the data from a cross-sectional survey, which was conducted in 2015 among 17,517 students from 130 colleges and professional schools in mainland China. Chi-square tests were performed to test the differences in the awareness and uses of contraceptives between male and female students. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to analyse the associations between socioeconomic and lifestyle factors and contraceptive uses. Results Condoms (95%), oral contraceptives (91%) and emergency contraceptives (71%) were the most commonly known contraceptive methods among the sample of Chinese youth that were surveyed. Among male participants, high monthly expenditure (OR = 1.37, 95%CI: 1.07–1.75), light alcohol consumption (OR = 1.47, 95%CI: 1.03–2.11), and high sexual knowledge (OR = 1.96, 95%CI: 1.57–2.45) were positively associated with contraceptive uses, while tobacco use (OR = 0.47, 95%CI: 0.23–0.95) showed a negative association with contraceptive uses. Among female students, suburban residency (OR = 1.38, 95%CI: 1.03–1.83), high level of parental education (OR = 1.96, 95%CI: 1.19–3.22), moderate alcohol consumption (OR = 2.66, 95%CI: 1.05–6.77), and high sexual knowledge (OR = 1.50, 95%CI: 1.18–1.91) were positively associated with contraceptive uses, while tobacco use (OR = 0.60, 95%CI: 0.36–0.99) showed a negative association. Conclusions A series of socioeconomic and lifestyle factors were associated with contraceptive choices among Chinese college students. Targeted sexual education programs are in demand to improve the awareness and the use of contraceptives in this population.

New achievements have been made in China's economic and social development, which has laid a solid material foundation and premise for the development of youth undertakings. The development of youth undertakings resonates with the progress of the country at the same frequency, with the continuous improvement of people's living conditions, and with the improvement of material living standards at the same frequency, realizing the earth shaking change from inadequate food and clothing to a well-off society in an all-round way. The medium and long term youth development plan (2016-2025) clearly states that by 2025, young people's right to education will be better guaranteed, the equalization of basic public education services will be gradually realized, and the level of education equity will be significantly improved.

There remains a need for a disorder-specific inventory of children's depression and anxiety that can reliably screen anxious and depressive disorder symptomatology in Chinese children. The Revised Child and Anxiety Depression Scale (RCADS) is a self-report questionnaire assessing anxiety and depression in children (Chorpita et al., 2000; Piqueras et al., 2017). This study sought to evaluate its psychometric properties in a Mainland Chinese sample. Students from the 4th to 11th grades (N = 1001) participated in this study. Each of the RCADS subscales, by age and sex, possessed reliability coefficients ranging between.63 and.81. Means and standard deviations for RCADS subscales calculated for the age and sex sub-samples were reported. Participants reported slightly lower levels on five subscales than for Chorpita et al. (2000) normative sample. The scales were significantly and strongly correlated with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) subscales (somatic, withdrawal, anxiety) as well as CBCL internalizing scores. Fit statistics suggested marginal to adequate fit for the six-factor model for the Chinese youth. The present study provides foundational support for the psychometric properties of the RCADS in a large sample of Chinese youth yet indicates that factor structure might be improved through enhanced sampling of culturally relevant symptom expressions. Working holiday schemes have become a popular way among Chinese youth to support their travel by undertaking temporary employment in host countries. Nowadays, young Chinese can participate in the scheme in two countries: New Zealand and Australia. Under this circumstance, this research sets out to address the gap in knowledge by exploring the adaptation of young Chinese to New Zealand work culture through the narratives and story-telling of Chinese working holidaymakers (WHMs) in New Zealand. Drawing on semistructured interviewing, this research interviewed 34 young Chinese who were undertaking or had completed working holidays in the South Island of New Zealand. Three main themes have been developed from analyzing the interview transcriptions, which are: work–life balance, leadership, and equality. The findings of the current research disclose that the adaptation of young Chinese as WHMs to New Zealand work culture was navigated and articulated through the sharp contrast with their previous working experiences, work culture, and working environment in China. These findings also facilitate the understanding of Chinese WHMs who are from a particular social and cultural context. More importantly, this research challenges the prevalence of Western-centric stances within the tourism discourse by incorporating the particular social and cultural context, which extends the research scope towards an underresearched community of Chinese WHMs. This research also offers both theoretical importance and practical implications. This paper examines the controversies surrounding the " niangpao " (effeminate men or "sissy boys") in the context of the debates surrounding Asian values, Confucianism and family values. These debates are ostensibly about what constitutes correct Chinese male behaviour. But the vehemence with which they are expressed betray their inherent patriarchal bent. Traditional masculinist mindsets cannot be practiced so easily now, partly because gender roles are changing and Chinese women and young activists are more assertive, and they have large followings on social media. For example, the resurrection of Confucian ideals saw the return of emphasis placed on educational achievements. But whereas traditionally successful examination candidates (always men) were guaranteed good careers, both male and female graduates now feel short-changed. It is in this environment that the niangpao polemics are carried out. I argue that despite sanctions from authorities, much of public opinion continues to uphold notions of gender diversity and respect. • Analyses the recent niangpao (sissy men) controversies in China. • Contextualizes these controversies in the changing ideological and social superstructures in China. • Such superstructures include "Chinese characteristics" (new Confucianism), the family and education.
