The diploid form of tall wheatgrass, Thinopyrum elongatum (Host) D.R. Dewey (2n = 2x = 14, EE genome), has a high level of resistance to fusarium head blight. The symptoms did not spread beyond the inoculated florets following point inoculation. Using a series of E-genome chromosome additions in a bread wheat cultivar Chinese Spring (CS) background, the resistance was found to be localized to the long arm of chromosome 7E. The CS mutant ph1b was used to induce recombination between chromosome 7E, present in the 7E(7D) substitution and homoeologous wheat chromosomes. Multivalent chromosome associations were detected in the BC1 hybrids, confirming the effectiveness of the ph1b mutant. Genetic markers specific for chromosome 7E were used to estimate the size of the 7E introgression in the wheat genome. Using single sequence repeat (SSR) markers specific for homoeologous wheat chromosome 7, introgressions were detected on wheat chromosomes 7A, 7B, and 7D. Some of the introgression lines were resistant to fusarium head blight.

Spot blotch disease of wheat, caused by the fungus Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc.) Shoem., produces several toxins which interact with the plants and thereby increase the blightening of the wheat leaves, and Bipolaroxin is one of them. There is an urgent need to decipher the molecular interaction between wheat and the toxin Bipolaroxin for in-depth understanding of host–pathogen interactions. In the present study, we have developed the three-dimensional structure of G-protein alpha subunit from Triticum aestivum. Molecular docking studies were performed using the active site of the modeled G-protein alpha and cryo-EM structure of beta subunit from T. aestivum and ‘Bipolaroxin’. The study of protein–ligand interactions revealed that six H-bonds are mainly formed by Glu29, Ser30, Lys32, and Ala177 of G-alpha with Bipolaroxin. In the beta subunit, the residues of the core beta strand domain participate in the ligand interaction where Lys256, Phe306, and Leu352 formed seven H-bonds with the ligand Bipolaroxin. All-atoms molecular dynamics (MD) simulation studies were conducted for G-alpha and -beta subunit and Bipolaroxin complexes to explore the stability, conformational flexibility, and dynamic behavior of the complex system. In planta studies clearly indicated that application of Bipolaroxin significantly impacted the physio-biochemical pathways in wheat and led to the blightening of leaves in susceptible cultivars as compared to resistant ones. Further, it interacted with the Gα and Gβ subunits of G-protein, phenylpropanoid, and MAPK pathways, which is clearly supported by the qPCR results. This study gives deeper insights into understanding the molecular dialogues between Bipolaroxin and the Gα and Gβ subunits of the wheat heterotrimeric G-protein during host–pathogen interaction.

Although fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) karyotypes of wheat chromosomes have already been widely investigated, more probes are needed to enrich them. Novel karyotype characteristics of 166 common wheat cultivars bred from the hometown of Chinese Spring were revealed using 11 oligonucleotide (oligo) probes derived from nine kinds of tandem repeats. Chromosomes 5A, 3B and 1D showed the highest number (24, 18 and 6) of karyotype variations in A-, B-, and D-genome chromosomes, respectively. According to the FISH karyotypes, the analyzed wheat cultivars were divided into eight clusters that correspond to breeding entities. Thirty and 38 cultivars contain wheat-Haynaldia villosa 6AL.6VS and wheat-rye 1BL.1RS translocation chromosomes, respectively, indicating their high breeding value in Sichuan, China. Additionally, four and three types of 6AL.6VS and 1BL.1RS translocations were observed, respectively. Scarce translocations were detected. 'Neimai' series cultivars contain reciprocal translocations 5AS.3BS/5AL.3BL. Three cultivars contain reciprocal translocations 5BL.5BS-7BL/7BS.7BL-5BS that occurred at high frequency in European wheat cultivars, indicating that the translocation is also adapted to Sichuan environments. These results indicate that some special karyotypes exist in Sichuan wheat cultivars, showing the relationship between karyotype and adaptation. Richer FISH bands of wheat chromosomes were revealed, and this can be used to investigate meiotic recombination conveniently.

Grain size is an important agronomic trait that influences the yield and end-use quality of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). We conducted quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis using recombinant inbred lines derived from a cross of a semi-dwarf modern variety with large grains (Zenkoujikomugi: Zen) and a landrace with small grains (Chinese Spring: CS). Grain size was evaluated as grain length (GL), grain width (GW), grain thickness (GT), and thousand-grain weight (TGW) under two environmental conditions. A major QTL (QGl.obu-4B) associated with GL was detected in both environments near the Rht-B1 locus for the semi-dwarf trait on chromosome 4B, despite Zen and CS having the same Rht-B1a allele. No QTL for GW was found in the QGl.obu-4B region, and QTLs for GT and TGW was detected in only one environment. To validate the effect of QGl.obu-4B, we developed two backcrossed populations in the CS and Zen genetic backgrounds. The Zen-derived allele conferred larger GL, GW, and GT, resulting in greater TGW (13.7% increase compared to the CS-derived allele) in the CS background. In contrast, the QGl.obu-4B effect was smaller in the Zen background, and the Zen-derived allele increased TGW by only 7.0%. The QTL was located within the 168-Mbp region tightly linked to the Rht-B1 locus. Further characterization and fine-mapping of QGl.obu-4B will facilitate the use of this allele by marker-assisted selection in wheat breeding programs.

Background Household air pollution (HAP) from residential combustion considerably affects human health in rural China. Large-scale population migration and rural lifestyle changes during the Spring Festival are supposed to change the household air pollution and health risks; however, limited field study has determined its impacts on HAP and short-term health outcomes. Methods A field study was conducted in rural areas of Southern China before and during the Spring Festival to explore the associations between HAP and blood pressure considering different factors such as cooking fuel, heating fuel, and smoking. Stationary real-time PM2.5 monitors were used to measure PM2.5 concentrations of the kitchen, living room, and yard of 156 randomly selected households. Personal exposure to PM2.5 was calculated based on the results of stationary samplers and corresponding time local residents spent in different microenvironments, and one adult resident was recruited of each family for the blood pressure measurement. Results Both personal exposure to PM2.5 and blood pressures of local residents increased during Spring Festival compared to the days before the holiday. Based on generalized linear model coupled with dominance analysis approach, it was found that personal PM2.5 exposure was positively associated with the factors of population size and the types of cooking and heating fuels with the relative contributions of approximately 82%, and systolic blood pressure (SBP, 100-120 mmHg as normal range for adults) was positively and significantly associated with personal PM2.5 exposures with the relative contribution of 11%. Conclusion The findings in this study demonstrated that Spring Festival can give rise to increase of HAP and hypertension risks, also related to tremendous solid fuel use, suggesting further policy making on promoting cleaner energy in rural areas and more attention on large population migration during national holidays.

Variations of levels, possible source and air mass transmission were investigated for 16 USEPA priority-controlled PAHs in PM2.5 during 2018 Chinese Spring Festival (CSF) in Xiangyang City, central China which is the North-South pollutant airmass transport channel of China. Totally 37 samples were collected. Mass concentrations of Σ16PAHs for the Pre–CSF day (Pre–CSFD), during the CSF day (CSFD) and after the CSF day (Af–CSFD) are 33.78 ± 17.68 ng/m3, 22.98 ± 6.49 ng/m3, and 8.99 ± 4.44 ng/m3, respectively. High resolution samples showed that Σ16PAHs are higher in the morning (06:00–11:00) or afternoon (11:30–16:30), than those in the evening (17:00–22:00) and at night (22:30–05:30), whereas the result is reversed during the CSFD. Fireworks burning can obviously increase the mass concentration of PAHs. Air mass trajectory indicated that Xiangyang is a sink area of pollutants for northwest and southeast, and the sources of the northeast and southwest. The air mass only can be transmitted out through northeast and southwest. It is effective for improvement of air quality in Wuhan and Hunan to control fireworks emission in Henan and local areas. Fireworks burning was an important source for PAHs during CSFD, biomass, coal combustion, and traffic emission were the main sources of PAHs for Pre–CSFD and Af–CSFD periods. The health risk on the CSFD was higher than the acceptable levels, especially during the intensive fireworks burning, the risk value far exceed 1.0 × 10−4, controlling burning fireworks is required.

A novel, stably expressed, and plant height-independent QTL for spike extension length on 5AS was identified and validated in different populations using a newly developed and tightly linked KASP marker. As an important component of plant height (PH), spike extension length (SEL) plays a significant role in formation of an ideotype in wheat. Despite the fact that numerous loci for SEL in wheat have been reported, our knowledge on PH-independent loci remains to be limited. In this study, two recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations genotyped using the Wheat55K SNP were used to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling SEL across six environments. A total of 30 QTL for SEL were detected in these two RIL populations, and four of them, i.e., QSEL.sicau-2CN-4D, QSEL.sicau-2SY-4B.2, QSEL.sicau-2SY-4D.1, and QSEL.sicau-2CN-5A, were stably expressed. Genetic and conditional QTL analysis showed that the first three were significantly associated with PH, while the last one, QSEL.sicau-2CN-5A, is independent of PH. Comparison of genetic and physical maps suggested that only QSEL.sicau-2CN-5A located on chromosome arm 5AS is likely a novel QTL. A Kompetitive Allele-Specific PCR (KASP) marker, KASP-AX-110413733, tightly linked to this novel QTL was developed to successfully confirm its effect in three different genetic populations. Further, in the interval where QSEL.sicau-2CN-5A was located on 'Chinese Spring' wheat reference genome, three promising genes mainly expressed in wheat stem were predicated and they all encode the cytochrome P450 that was demonstrated to be closely associated with SEL elongation in rice. In addition, significant correlations between SEL and PH, spikelet number per spike, and thousand-grain weight were also detected. Altogether, our results broaden our understanding on genetic basis of SEL and will be useful for marker-based selection of lines with different SELs and fine mapping the novel and PH-independent QTL QSEL.sicau-2CN-5A.

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and its spread throughout the China have caused a huge impact on China and the international community. And now it becomes a worldwide infectious disease which poses a major threat to the lives of people around the world. What is worth noting about China is five million people left Wuhan before the Spring Festival, which caused the nationwide spreading of COVID-19 epidemic. Then, it raises a question of concern, should the return of migrant workers and students after the Spring Festival cause an increase in the epidemic? In this study, we use the discrete stochastic model (DSM) to study the transmission dynamics of COVID-19. The DSM is different from the classical continuous variable ordinary differential equations, and has two characteristics. First, on account of few patients at the beginning of the COVID-19 and random fluctuations during the transmission process are prominent; the DSM can better reflect the initial transmission characteristics than the continuous variable deterministic ordinary differential equation model. Second, the DSM can easily track the changes in the epidemic situation, and well reflect the infectious rate varies with time due to different prevention and control measures, and then gradually estimate the development of the epidemic situation. Meanwhile, based on the facts that there are successive time lags among epidemic infection, symptom onset, and diagnosis confirmation, the Erlang probability density distribution, which is frequent used in the queuing theory, has been applied to the calculation of numbers of epidemic daily outbreaks and daily infections respectively from the corrected numbers of patients diagnosed and confirmed reported every day since the outbreak of the epidemic in Hubei Province. The number of symptom onset patients we calculated agrees well with recent statistics made by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), showing the feasibility of our method. The calculation results indicate that in the rising stage of the epidemic, although the number of newly diagnostic confirmed patients reported before the day of lock down of Wuhan city was only 180 daily, the number of newly infected people may have reached about 2500, and the cumulative number of infected may reach 33000. More than 5500 people may have rushed out of Hubei Province uncontrollably, thus causing a national epidemic of COVID-19. However, it is in the epidemic decline stage mow. Even if Hubei’s daily confirmed diagnosis remains at a high level of more than 1700 people a day, the number of newly infected people may be less than 800 nowadays, and most of whom may already be concerned about quarantine. The number of infections in other provinces and cities is much lower than that in Hubei. Therefore, as long as the epidemic situation in different regions is distinguished, return trips could be arranged at reduced people density, attentive epidemic prevention of transportation, and well preparation at the receiving cities. Rebound of the epidemic is quite unlikely. Although, the possibility of an epidemic rebound is small, only in conditions of slack thinking and strict measures are carried out. In accordance with the transmission of the world epidemic, more attention must be paid to the inspection of the influx of foreign infected people.

Alternative splicing (AS) plays crucial roles during plant development especially in stress responses. Although many studies have been performed on AS, the function of which participating in abiotic stress responses is still not well known. To assess the interplay between AS and salt stress, genome-wide analyses of AS were performed. Totally, 11,141 genes were found exhibiting significant AS changes after salt stress treatment, and more AS events were identified in Chinese Spring (CS, salt-sensitive) (21,203) than in Qing Mai 6 (QM, salt-tolerant) (19,742). Meanwhile, wheat homeologous genes displayed differential AS responses under salt stress treatment, and 7235, 8143 and 7407 AS events were identified on subgenome A, B and D respectively. Comparison of AS events at different time after salt stress showed that 4747 and 4129 salt stress responsive AS events were characterized in CS and QM, respectively, and most AS events were induced at 48 h after salt stress (HAS) compared with the other three stages. Functional enrichment analysis found that abiotic stress responsive pathways tended to be enriched in partitioned differentially spliced genes (DSGs) between CS and QM after salt stress treatment, and Pfam classification showed that many stress related proteins were also enriched under salt stress condition. Thus, these results demonstrated that AS regulation may play key roles in response to salt stress, which, together with transcriptional regulation, contributes to abiotic stress tolerance in wheat.

Public emergencies often have an impact on the production and operation of enterprises. Timely and effective quantitative measurement of enterprises’ offline resumption of work after public emergencies is conducive to the formulation and implementation of relevant policies. In this study, we analyze the level of work resumption after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-influenced Chinese Spring Festival in 2020 with night time lights remote sensing data and Baidu Migration data. The results are verified by official statistics and facts, which demonstrates that COVID-19 has seriously affected the resumption of work after the Spring Festival holiday. Since 10 February, work has been resuming in localities. By the end of March, the work resumption index of most cities exceeded 70% and even Shanghai, Nanjing and Suzhou had achieved complete resumption of work. Wuhan only started to resume work in the last week of March due to the more severe outbreak. Although the level of work resumption is gradually increasing in every area, the specific situation of resumption of work varies in different regions. The process of work resumption in coastal areas is faster, while the process is relatively slow in inland cities.

In wheat, β-glucan (BG) content represents an important component of dietary fibre with important health benefit. Among cereals, barley, oats and rye have the highest BG content in the grain (from 3 to 10%), while bread and durum wheat contain percentages lower than 1%. Screening genetic resources for improving wheat BG can contribute to human health. In this study, a complete series of wheat–barley addition lines were evaluated for the BG content in replicated field trials for 3 years to determine how the added chromosome influence the BG in wheat. On the overall, the BG varied among the addition lines, and the effect of individual barley chromosomes on the wheat background was evident in each experiment. Significant higher BG than Chinese Spring was found in four addition lines (CS-1H/1HS-6H, CS-2H, CS-6H and CS-7H), while three lines (CS-3H, CS-4H and CS-5H) showed lower amount than the wheat parental line. Particularly, CS-7H had significant high BG in all the years considered, with percentage increments of the mean values ranging from 17.2 to 48.1% in comparison to Chinese Spring. Though BG in wheat grain increased in some addition lines, it was still much lower than in barley. Results are discussed in relation to the genes controlling the synthesis and breakdown of BG in the wheat background.

Fireworks displays are a traditional form of celebration during the Chinese Spring Festival (Festival). In response to the heavy air pollution caused by fireworks, Shanghai, a megacity in China, has imposed regulatory measures on the use of fireworks in recent years. To investigate air quality trends before and after firework regulation was established and quantify its efficiency, gaseous pollutants, PM2.5 levels, and PM2.5 chemical composition were synchronously measured at 1 h time intervals at an urban site and a suburban site in Shanghai in the period during and around the Festival from 2013 to 2017. PM2.5 concentrations at the urban site during the Festival over the five-year period were 79 (max: 524), 94 (290), 53 (163), 50 (146) and 32 (156) μg/m3, respectively, presenting a decreasing trend at a rate of −13.8 μg/m3/yr (p = 0.05). K+ concentrations, which serve as a tracer of fireworks, were 8.2 (max: 159.4), 2.5 (14.6), 2.2 (10.4), 4.3 (44.2) and 0.8 (4.5) μg/m3 during the Festival from 2013 to 2017, respectively, and thus decreased at a rate of −1.3 μg/m3/yr (p = 0.17). Accordingly, fireworks contributed 41 (51.9%), 38 (36.5%), 6 (10.3%), 21 (35.6%), and 4 μg/m3 (12.1%) to PM2.5, respectively, implying the effectiveness of firework regulation in Shanghai. Health effects attributed to PM2.5 pollution in Shanghai during the Festival were assessed based on Poisson regression. The number of premature deaths related to short-term PM2.5 exposure in Shanghai during the Festival from 2013 to 2017 was 75 (95% CI: 27, 108), 92 (30, 129), 55 (18, 76), 49 (19, 70), and 31 (12, 45), respectively. Daily mortality due to PM2.5 exposure during the Festival from 2013 to 2017 accounted for 1.4–3.8% of total daily mortality in Shanghai. Nationwide migrations have drawn much attention from both geographical and social sciences. Compared to census-data-based studies, data collected from broadly used location-awareness devices enable us to describe migrant patterns with timely and fine spatial resolutions. Using a mobile positioning dataset, this paper first analyzes the spatial patterns of mobile-data-based active population estimation (MAPE) and aims to uncover the socioeconomic factors associated with migrant patterns based on the MAPE change around the Chinese Spring Festival of 2016. Time series analysis presents obvious regular patterns and characteristics of MAPE before and during the holiday. Results from a geographically weighted regression (GWR) model show that MAPE differences are significantly associated with the development of secondary and tertiary industries, wage levels and foreign investments. Spatial disparities of the GWR model coefficients reveal that areas in China have different degrees of association with the explanatory variables. Explanations of this spatial nonstationary phenomenon are further detailed with the perspective of a geographical background. Finally, associated social and economic development strategies among cities in China are analyzed, and policy implications regarding the newly emerged data and their insightful findings are discussed.

Daily PM2.5 was collected in the periods before, during and after the Chinese Spring Festival (CSF) in both 2016 and 2018 to clarify the annual variation in the concentrations and health risks of toxic metals under different firework/firecracker (FF) management strategies. PM2.5 and bound metals all decreased during the CSF from 2016 to 2018. According to relative abundance analysis, toxic metals, i.e., Ba, Pb, Cu and Cr, showed obvious peak concentrations and abundance levels on intensive FF burning days, i.e., New Year's Eve, Chinese New Year and the Lunar Festival. In both CSF periods, three sources of toxic metals, namely, FF burning, coal combustion, and resuspended dust and vehicle emissions, were identified by positive matrix factorization (PMF). Among them, the mass contribution of FF decreased from 0.83 μg m−3 (11%) in the 2016 CSF to 0.23 μg m−3 (9.0%) in the 2018 CSF. The FF-attributed noncancer and cancer risks due to metals for residents under long-term exposure were 0.02 (19.9%) and 1.76 × 10−7 (17.9%) in the 2016 CSF and 0.01 (20.2%) and 8.59 × 10−8 (14.7%) in the 2018 CSF. Although a policy shift from “restriction” to “prohibition” regarding FF has indeed decreased toxic metal concentrations and health risk, Cr(VI) and Ba should be examined more closely in the future because they have become dominant contributors to cancer risk and noncancer risk, respectively.

As an air pollutant closely related to urban traffic and heavy industrial capacity, the variation of NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) concentration can directly reflect the strength of socioeconomic activities. Using the weekly average results of daily product synthesis of tropospheric NO2 column concentrations from OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument) satellite inversion, a weekly-scale variation series of standardized socioeconomic activity index during the Spring Festival period of 2019–2021 is constructed. The results show that the OMI-NO2 satellite data are in good consistency with ground-based monitoring data; the Spring Festival holiday also suppresses socioeconomic activity in normal years, but the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic leads to an extended period of 2–3 weeks of weakened socioeconomic activity in China after the holiday, while the minimum value of socioeconomic activity intensity decreases by 0.12. Although socioeconomic activity is significantly suppressed in the short term, the intensity of socioeconomic activity rises steadily with the gradual resumption of work and production everywhere from the third week after the Chinese Spring Festival and has reached 60.91% of the highest level before the holiday in the seventh week after the holiday. OMI-NO2 satellite data can be used for a rapid assessment of the intensity of air pollution emissions and the level of socioeconomic activity in different regions.

Background The sequencing of the wheat (Triticum aestivum) genome has been a methodological challenge for many years owing to its large size (15.5 Gb), repeat content, and hexaploidy. Many initiatives aiming at obtaining a reference genome of cultivar Chinese Spring have been launched in the past years and it was achieved in 2018 as the result of a huge effort to combine short-read sequencing with many other resources. Reference-quality genome assemblies were then produced for other accessions, but the rapid evolution of sequencing technologies offers opportunities to reach high-quality standards at lower cost. Results Here, we report on an optimized procedure based on long reads produced on the Oxford Nanopore Technology PromethION device to assemble the genome of the French bread wheat cultivar Renan. Conclusions We provide the most contiguous chromosome-scale assembly of a bread wheat genome to date. Coupled with an annotation based on RNA-sequencing data, this resource will be valuable for the crop community and will facilitate the rapid selection of agronomically important traits. We also provide a framework to generate high-quality assemblies of complex genomes using ONT.

Timely and effective quantitative measurement of enterprises' offline resumption of work after public emergencies is conducive to the formulation and implementation of relevant policies. In this paper, we analyze the level of work resumption after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-influenced Chinese Spring Festival in 2020 with National Polar-orbiting Partnership Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (NPP-VIIRS) Day/Night Band (DNB) daily data. The results demonstrate that COVID-19 has seriously affected the resumption of work after the Spring Festival holiday. Since February 10th, work has been resuming in localities. By late March, the work resumption indexes of most cities exceeded 50%, and Shanghai and Nanjing even had achieved complete resumption of work. Our method effectively estimates the resumption of work, which provides a scientific basis for local governments to formulate subsequent resumption policies.

Responding to the 2020 COVID‐19 outbreak, China imposed an unprecedented lockdown producing reductions in air pollutant emissions. However, the lockdown driven air pollution changes have not been fully quantified. We applied machine learning to quantify the effects of meteorology on surface air quality data in 31 major Chinese cities. The meteorologically normalized NO2, O3, and PM2.5 concentrations changed by −29.5%, +31.2%, and −7.0%, respectively, after the lockdown began. However, part of this effect was also associated with emission changes due to the Chinese Spring Festival, which led to ∼14.1% decrease in NO2, ∼6.6% increase in O3 and a mixed effect on PM2.5 in the studied cities that largely resulted from festival associated fireworks. After decoupling the weather and Spring Festival effects, changes in air quality attributable to the lockdown were much smaller: −15.4%, +24.6%, and −9.7% for NO2, O3, and PM2.5, respectively., Key Points The Chinese Spring Festival led to a 14.1% decrease in NO2, 6.6% increase in O3 and a mixed effect on PM2.5 across China in 2015–2019The 2020 lockdown resulted in −15.4%, −17.0%, −14.5%, −7.6%, −9.7%, and +24.6% changes for NO2, SO2, CO, PM10, PM2.5, and O3, respectivelyFireworks emissions contributed to haze in many cities such as an additional 29 μg m−3 PM2.5 in Beijing on the first lunar day of 2020

A chromosome-level genome assembly of the bread wheat variety Chinese Spring (CS) has recently been published. Genome-wide identification of regulatory elements (REs) responsible for regulating gene activity is key to further mechanistic studies. Because epigenetic activity can reflect RE activity, defining chromatin states based on epigenomic features is an effective way to detect REs. Here, we present the web-based platform Chinese Spring chromatin state (CSCS), which provides CS chromatin signature information. CSCS includes 15 recently published epigenomic data sets including open chromatin and major chromatin marks, which are further partitioned into 15 distinct chromatin states. CSCS curates detailed information about these chromatin states, with trained self-organization mapping (SOM) for segments in all chromatin states and JBrowse visualization for genomic regions or genes. Motif analysis for genomic regions or genes, GO analysis for genes and SOM analysis for new epigenomic data sets are also integrated into CSCS. In summary, the CSCS database contains the combinatorial patterns of chromatin signatures in wheat and facilitates the detection of functional elements and further clarification of regulatory activities. We illustrate how CSCS enables biological insights using one example, demonstrating that CSCS is a highly useful resource for intensive data mining. The genetic control of host response to the fungal necrotrophic disease Septoria nodorum blotch (SNB) in bread wheat is complex, involving many minor genes. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) controlling SNB response were previously identified on chromosomes 1BS and 5BL. The aim of this study, therefore, was to align and compare the genetic map representing QTL interval on 1BS and 5BS with the reference sequence of wheat and identify resistance genes (R-genes) associated with SNB response. Alignment of QTL intervals identified significant genome rearrangements on 1BS between parents of the DH population EGA Blanco, Millewa and the reference sequence of Chinese Spring with subtle rearrangements on 5BL. Nevertheless, annotation of genomic intervals in the reference sequence were able to identify and map 13 and 12 R-genes on 1BS and 5BL, respectively. R-genes discriminated co-located QTL on 1BS into two distinct but linked loci. NRC1a and TFIID mapped in one QTL on 1BS whereas RGA and Snn1 mapped in the linked locus and all were associated with SNB resistance but in one environment only. Similarly, Tsn1 and WK35 were mapped in one QTL on 5BL with NETWORKED 1A and RGA genes mapped in the linked QTL interval. This study provided new insights on possible biochemical, cellular and molecular mechanisms responding to SNB infection in different environments and also addressed limitations of using the reference sequence to identify the full complement of functional R-genes in modern varieties.

Background . Human migration is one of the driving forces for amplifying localized infectious disease outbreaks into widespread epidemics. During the outbreak of COVID-19 in China, the travels of the population from Wuhan have furthered the spread of the virus as the period coincided with the world’s largest population movement to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Methods . We have collected and made public an anonymous and aggregated mobility dataset extracted from mobile phones at the national level, describing the outflows of population travel from Wuhan. We evaluated the correlation between population movements and the virus spread by the dates when the number of diagnosed cases was documented. Results . From Jan 1 to Jan 22 of 2020, a total of 20.2 million movements of at-risk population occurred from Wuhan to other regions in China. A large proportion of these movements occurred within Hubei province (84.5%), and a substantial increase of travels was observed even before the beginning of the official Chinese Spring Festival Travel. The outbound flows from Wuhan before the lockdown were found strongly correlated with the number of diagnosed cases in the destination cities (log-transformed). Conclusions . The regions with the highest volume of receiving at-risk populations were identified. The movements of the at-risk population were strongly associated with the virus spread. These results together with province-by-province reports have been provided to governmental authorities to aid policy decisions at both the state and provincial levels. We believe that the effort in making this data available is extremely important for COVID-19 modelling and prediction.
