In pursuit of becoming an innovative country by 2049, for the centennial of the People’s Republic of China, the recent Chinese economic growth is impressive and gives this nation the prediction of occupying the position of first world economy by 2030. This performance has aroused an interest in understanding how the relationship between the State, university, and industry has contributed to such economic development. To this end, this exploratory research made use of bibliographic, documental, and field research (interviews and questionnaire application). The data were analyzed using theoretical content analysis, with theoretical categories derived from the Triple Helix Theory and Knowledge Transfer. The findings indicate that this is a virtuous relationship that occurs asymmetrically with a State with multiple responsibilities and committed to the driving forces of economic development, oscillating between a “strong state” and an “effective state”.

This article illuminates a nuanced interaction between the ethnic minorities in Southwest China and the state, centering on tourism development. Through an ethnographic case study of Upper Langde Miao village, this article documents the transformation from the village’s self-governed to county-government-directed tourism and explores under what conditions it loses out to the statecraft. It explains the seemingly radical changes from the villagers’ avoidance of the state to their recent desire, despite distrust, for a just state to deliver economic benefits. China's coal safety has improved dramatically since 2003. This article will present the official data and conclude that it is almost impossible that the figures conceal a situation where there has not been remarkable improvement. Structural factors including China's level of economic development, changes in the labour market and the economic health of the industry have played an important role, but state commitment and policies have been central at least to the speed and magnitude of the improvement. Drawing on life-history interviews conducted with Chinese intranational migrant gay men in Shenzhen, a rising migrant metropolis in South China, this article examines the pathways of Chinese intranational sexual migration, with a special focus on the state's complicated role. I identify three patterns of migration pathway—circular, transitory, and permanent migration—to capture the tempo-spatial complexity in the Chinese gay men's migratory trajectories. These categories suggest the important role played by migrants' sexuality and class in shaping their migration pathways. They also allow me to observe how China's state-sponsored rural-urban divide entangles with Shenzhen's population governance policies in shaping the Chinese migrant gay men's lived experiences and migration pathways in tempo-spatial terms. This article investigates the role of overseas Chinese in attempts to reclaim temple property in Fujian Province, southeastern China. Miaofalin Temple, in downtown Xiamen, started out as a vegetarian hall, but it became the site of an underground Communist Party organization during the War of Anti-Japanese Resistance and Civil War periods. Critically, the temple is located in a qiaoxiang, a district where a large proportion of residents have emigrated abroad. This has been critical in attempts to reclaim temple property, which was appropriated by the state during the Mao and reform eras. These attempts at reclamation are a collaborative effort of overseas Chinese, temple representatives and 'old revolutionaries' who were once based there in its underground days. Yet negotiations with government departments have been challenging due to the ambiguous status of the temple as both a revolutionary relic and a religious site founded by overseas Chinese. They are further complicated by the unresolved contradictions between the bureaucratizing process and the legacy of Maoist state planning. While previous research highlights the strong influence of overseas Chinese in qiaoxiang religious affairs, this case study shows the limits of their influence, drawing attention to socio-economic differences among emigrants. The influence of overseas Chinese and their success in negotiating with officials may, it seems, depend on their status and their ability (or inability) to contribute to the Chinese economy. This article contributes to the debate on the role of the Chinese state in economic transition by shedding light on the relationship between the state and a Chinese domestic capitalist class. The formation of this new class has been a two-way movement between the state and new elites' forces. This two-way movement remains a prominent feature of the relationship between the state and the new class. This relationship has evolved with the dynamics of capital-labor conflicts and contradictions within a regime of accumulation and transitioned from a stage of "great compromise" to a stage of "strained alliance." This study aims at investigating the role of the expanding overseas Chinese state in the construction of 'Chineseness' among Chinese migrant entrepreneurs in Ghana. It focuses especially on the manifestation of the ideology of Chinese nationalism in the migrants' living experience. Data analyzed in this study are primarily drawn from extensive interviews with private entrepreneurs, employees of Chinese state-owned enterprises and Chinese Embassy officials in Ghana. Besides, this study is supplemented by a content analysis of archive data collected from media reports, policy documents, online forums and social media. This study reveals that as an unintended consequence, private entrepreneurs enjoy tangible benefits from the expanding presence of overseas Chinese state in Ghana. Strategies and policies implemented by the Chinese government and its overseas representatives aiming at engaging Chinese diasporas also contribute to spreading nationalism and building a deterritorial Chinese identity.
