This paper presents a large-scale document-level comparison of two major bibliographic data sources: Scopus and Dimensions. The focus is on the differences in their coverage of documents at two levels of aggregation: by country and by institution. The main goal is to analyze whether Dimensions offers as good new opportunities for bibliometric analysis at the country and institutional levels as it does at the global level. Differences in the completeness and accuracy of citation links are also studied. The results allow a profile of Dimensions to be drawn in terms of its coverage by country and institution. Dimensions’ coverage is more than 25% greater than Scopus which is consistent with previous studies. However, the main finding of this study is the lack of affiliation data in a large fraction of Dimensions documents. We found that close to half of all documents in Dimensions are not associated with any country of affiliation while the proportion of documents without this data in Scopus is much lower. This situation mainly affects the possibilities that Dimensions can offer as instruments for carrying out bibliometric analyses at the country and institutional level. Both of these aspects are highly pragmatic considerations for information retrieval and the design of policies for the use of scientific databases in research evaluation., The Scimago group annually receives a raw data copy in XML format through a contract with Elsevier. The Scimago group has the possibility of downloading a copy of Dimensions in JSON format through an agreement with Digital Science. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo comparar los patrones de colaboración de la producción científica argentina de agroindustria de acuerdo con el alcance geográfico de la investigación, es decir, temas dirigidos a lectores nacionales y temas que van más allá de la frontera nacional recogida en la base de datos Scopus para el periodo 2007-2016. El comportamiento de ambos grupos se analiza y describe de la siguiente manera: a) se discrimina según se trate de temas de investigación globales o locales, aplicando el criterio de ausencia o presencia de topónimos nacionales, respectivamente; b) se presenta el volumen de coautoría con diferentes países agrupados por continentes ; c) se determinan las 20 palabras claves más frecuentes para cada caso y, d) se pone en relación con el Índice-H de los países, utilizado en este caso como indicador de impacto científico del país colaborador. Los principales resultados muestran que solo con Europa se logra la proporción de colaboración a los niveles de la ciencia del país (40%). Con países de continentes como Oceanía, Asia y África, la colaboración es muy minoritaria (5% o menos). La distribución en temas globales y locales se mantiene en todos los continentes con leves incrementos en Europa, América del Norte y Caribe y Oceanía a favor de los temas locales. La correlación entre la colaboración internacional y el impacto científico que tienen los países con los que se colabora es relativamente positiva. Los temas sobre los que se investiga se anclan principalmente en la Patagonia, el litoral marítimo y se centran especialmente en los bovinos y el maíz. El estudio aporta información útil para pensar la conformación de equipos de investigación, la planificación de programas de movilidad internacional y alianzas estratégicas en relación con la colaboración futura, y lo hace en un área estratégica que genera fuertes expectativas para el desarrollo económico del país., This work aims to compare the collaboration patterns of the Argentine scientific production of Agroindustry according to the geographical scope of the research, that is, topics addressed to national readers and topics that go beyond the national border. Scopus database were used to carry out this study which span for the period 2007-2016. Collaboration patterns of both groups were analyzed and described as follows: a) whether they are global or local research topics, applying the criterion of absence or presence of national place names, respectively; b) the volume of co-authorship with different countries grouped by continents is presented; c) the 20 most frequent keywords are determined for each case and, d) the H-Index of countries was used as an indicator of the scientific impact of the collaborating country. The main results show that European countries are the main collaborator in Agroindustry research with more than 40% of co-authored papers, while Oceania, Asia, and Africa present lower collaboration rates (5% or less). The distribution of papers in global and local topics appear in all continents with slight increases in Europe, North America, and the Caribbean and Oceania in favor of local topics. The correlation between international collaboration and the scientific impact of the countries with which Argentina collaborates is relatively positive. The topics investigated are mainly anchored in Patagonia, the maritime coastline, and are especially focused on cattle and corn. This paper analyses the infuence of a Brazilian institution delivering the corresponding author on its scientifc citation impact, distinguishing between its collaborative papers with foreign institutions and those resulting from national collaboration. We retrieved from Scopus database a total of 607,454 Brazilian documents for all 443 Brazilian institutions with at least 100 documents published from 2003 to 2015. We evaluated the diference between the normalized citation impact as corresponding author and that as non-corresponding author, applying paired t-tests both for international and for national collaboration. As result, for international collaboration, it was observed that the normalized citation impact achieved by Brazilian institutions depends upon corresponding author status, and that, in case of non-corresponding authorship, the impact shows a signifcant beneft when the paper has a corresponding author from a foreign institution. In national collaboration, the institutions beneft as non-corresponding author, although the diference is too small to infuence the practice of the institutions’ scientifc policies. Thus, the indicator of corresponding author provides additional information relevant to Brazilian institutions in international collaboration, but not in national institutional co-authorship, which is more infuenced by the institution’s recognized scientifc tradition and publishing strategies/practices

La actividad científica, como uno de los principales motores de desarrollo económico, implica la participación de diversos sectores e instituciones. Para ello, el Consejo Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación Tecnológica (CONCYTEC), como institución rectora del Sistema Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación Tecnológica (SINACYT), desarrolla diversas actividades orientadas no solo a generar las condiciones necesarias para el desarrollo de la investigación, sino también para su promoción, fomento y orientación. En este contexto, la elaboración de análisis sobre los resultados de investigación que se generan en el país es fundamental para la evaluación que hacen las diferentes instancias gubernamentales implicadas en el desarrollo de la política nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación (CTeI) y en el planteamiento de estrategias que contribuyan a consolidar la actividad investigadora en el país., Por ello, el objetivo principal de este informe es caracterizar la investigación científica desarrollada en Perú, mediante la determinación del grado de visibilidad, colaboración, impacto, excelencia y liderazgo, que alcanzaron los investigadores peruanos, durante el sexenio de 2012-2017. Para lo cual, se usaron como fuente de datos bibliométricos Scopus de Elsevier y la metodología de SCImago Research Group.

National contributions to science are influenced by a number of factors, including economic capacity, national scientific priorities, science policy, and institutional settings and cultures. Nations do not have equal opportunities to access the global scientific market, and therefore, often seek out international partners with complementary resources and expertise. This study aims at investigating national collaboration strategies, with a focus on research leadership—measured through the corresponding authorship—and its relationship with scientific impact. Results show that countries with higher R&D investments are more scientifically independent, and confirm that international collaborations positively related to citation impact. However, leadership in international collaborations inversely related to a country share of international collaboration and there is a very little relationship between citation impact and international leadership. For instance, most countries—and particularly those that have fewer resources—have a higher scientific impact when they are not leading. Proper field delineation plays an important role in scientometric studies, although it is a tough task. Based on an emerging and interdisciplinary field nanoscience and nanotechnology– this paper highlights the problem of field delineation. First we review the related literature. Then, three different approaches to delineate a field of knowledge were applied at three different levels of aggregation: subject category, publication level, and journal level. Expert opinion interviews served to assess the data, and precision and recall of each approach were calculated for comparison. Author co-citation analysis (ACA) is a commonly used method to map knowledge domains and depict scientific intellectual structures. Although all authors’ information has been considered in previous studies, ACA does not distinguish credits of different collaborators within a team. Authors’ sequence in a publication illustrates their contributions and specialty of research, which offers more information as inputs of ACA. This paper considers author sequence in ACA and proposes a sequence-based ACA method. By assigning various weight values to authors with different sequences, this proposed method considers distinct contributions of co-authors influencing the effect of ACA. Extra weight is given to corresponding authors, beyond their sequence, to acknowledge their additional contributions. Results of the empirical study based on the data from the field of Library and Information Science show many details on the visualization maps of the proposed methods, such as the number of sub-fields, the position of sub-fields, the position of authors, and clarity and interpretability of visualization maps. Meanwhile, the current paper proposes a novel framework of evaluating knowledge domain maps with both quantitative and qualitative facets.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to visualize the structure of SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) coverage of the extensive citation network of Scopus journals, examining this bibliometric portal through an alternative approach, applying clustering and visualization techniques to a combination of citation-based links. Design/methodology/approach:Three SJR journal-journal networks containing direct citation, co-citation and bibliographic coupling links are built. The three networks were then combined into a new one by summing up their values, which were later normalized through geo-normalization measure. Finally, the VOS clustering algorithm was executed and the journal clusters obtained were labeled using original SJR category tags and significant words from journal titles. Findings: The resultant scientogram displays the SJR structure through a set of communities equivalent to SJR categories that represent the subject contents of the journals they cover. A higher level of aggregation by areas provides a broad view of the SJR structure, facilitating its analysis and visualization at the same time. Originality/value: This is the first study using Persson’s combination of most popular citation-based links (direct citation, co-citation and bibliographic coupling) in order to develop a scientogram based on Scopus journals from SJR. The integration of the three measures along with performance of the VOS community detection algorithm gave a balanced set of clusters. The resulting scientogram is useful for assessing and validating previous classifications as well as for information retrieval and domain analysis.

This study aims to characterize scientific performance in a domain (Public Health) by the institutions of a country (Cuba), taking as reference world output and regional output (other Latin American centers) during the period 2003–2012. A new approach is used here to assess to what extent the leadership of a specific institution can change its citation impact. Cuba was found to have a high level of specialization and scientific leadership that does not match the low international visibility of Cuban institutions. This leading output appears mainly in non-collaborative papers, in national journals; publication in English is very scarce and the rate of international collaboration is very low. The Instituto de Medicina Tropical Pedro Kouri stands out, alone, as a national reference. Meanwhile, at the regional level, Latin American institutions deserving mention for their high autonomy in normalized citation would include Universidad de Buenos Aires (ARG), Universidade Federal de Pelotas (BRA), Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Cientı´ficas y Te´cnicas (ARG), Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (BRA) and the Centro de Pesquisas Rene Rachou (BRA). We identify a crucial aspect that can give rise to misinterpretations of data: a high share of leadership cannot be considered positive for institutions when it is mainly associated with a high proportion of non-collaborative papers and a very low level of performance. This study compares the flows of mobile researchers and the number of publications in international collaboration within the context of scientific and economic capacities. The goal is to identify the convergence or discrepancy of countries in mobility and collaboration and determine the positions and relative influence of countries in both processes. Using affiliation data from scientific publications, we analyze the distributions and networks of collaboration and mobility and their structural differences. The results show that there is a significant relationship between the flow of mobile researchers and the capacity for publishing with foreign partners in the more prolific countries, although mobility is always lower than collaboration. Size matters and scientific relationship are highly resource-dependent. Advanced and Proficient countries accumulate the highest proportion of the mobile authors and international publications with an extremely low representation of mobility in Developing and Lagging countries. In addition, the placement of countries is not always consistent in both networks, revealing distinct roles of mobility and collaboration, with particular instability for lower income countries. The more resources available in a country (both scientific and economic) the greater the likelihood of attracting foreign partners and mobilizing human capital. This study explores the international profiles in collaboration and mobility of countries included in the so-called ‘‘travel bans’’ implemented by US President Trump as an executive order in 2017. The objective of this research is to analyze the exchange of knowledge between countries and the relative importance of specific countries in order to inform evidence-based science policy. The work serves as a proof-of-concept of the utility of asymmetry and affinity indexes for collaboration and mobility. Comparative analyses of these indicators can be useful for informing immigration policies and motivating collaboration and mobility relationships—emphasizing the importance of geographic and cultural similarities. Egocentric and relational perspectives are analyzed to provide various lenses on the importance of countries. Our analysis suggests that comparisons of collaboration and mobility from an affinity perspective can identify discrepancies between levels of collaboration and mobility. It may be a useful strategy for building scientific capacity in developing and peripheral countries. The objective of this paper is to characterize the scientific output and specialization of the most productive Latin American countries with a focus on international collaboration and impact. We conducted a descriptive study based on the SCImago Institutions Ranking (SIR) portal, in the field of Medicine, for the period 2003–2013. The set of indicators applied was based on documents, citation, and collaboration. The results show that at the global level, Surgery, Cardiology, Oncology, Neurology, and Public Health are the most productive subjects in Medicine; in Latin America, the most productive topics are Public Health, Infectious Diseases, Surgery, Neurology, and Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine. The most prolific countries are Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina, though the ones having greater impact and more collaboration are Peru, Puerto Rico, and Argentina. The most productive and visible fields, such as Oncology, Cardiology, and Infectious Diseases, are related to major global health problems involving chronic and emerging diseases. This information could be useful to design pragmatic policies, to encourage research in key fields in order to respond better to the health needs of a given population.

DOI:10.1007/s11192-018-2652-7, International collaboration in the creation of knowledge is changing the structural stratification of science, with implications for science policy. Analyses of collaboration in developing and emergent countries are of particular significance because initiatives are often the result of “research-for-aid” arrangements, generally based on North-South asymmetries. However, collaboration for mutual benefit and excellence has gained increasing acceptance, with “partner” selection becoming a strategic priority to enhance one’s own production. This article explores the capacity of BRIC and selects Latin American countries in the generation of scientific knowledge and their visibility at the global level in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The goal is to determine to what extent countries benefit from the role of their collaborators to heighten research performance in terms of citation; and how collaboration could help countries to leverage their competitiveness through the design of research and development agendas. The method relies on the decomposition of leadership, as well as its consideration in view of performance indicators such as normalized citation impact, scientific excellence, and technological impact. The results suggest that the growth of international collaboration should be interpreted as a positive aspect. To classify the interdisciplinarity in research, we explored and compared two different approaches: the diversity of disciplines reflected in the listed affiliations of the authors and the diversity of the subject categories reflected in the reference list. To assess the diversity in departmental affiliations, we developed an explorative methodology that retrieves feature words from a combination of manual work and the thesaurus function in the Thomson Data Analyzer text mining tool. To assess the diversity in references, we followed the conventional approach applied in previous work. With both approaches, we relied on diversity as the measure for assessing interdisciplinarity of 157,710 articles published in PloS One (2007–2016). Based on a comparison between the results of both approaches, our study confirms that different methodologies and indicators can produce seriously inconsistent, and even contradictory results. In addition, different indicators may capture different understandings of such a multi-faceted concept as interdisciplinarity. Based on a set of bibliometric indicators, we try to shed light on the evolution of the volume of scientific output in Cuban and foreign journals, and its distribution and visibility by quartiles. Also analyzed is the citation per document received, broken down by language of publication and type of collaboration. The results reveal patterns and strategies of expansion in scientific communication that may be useful for academic and institutional decision-makers, suggesting means of amending editorial policy to improve scientific quality and international diffusion of output. [EN] The aim of this study was to analyze the evolution of the quantity and visibility of Cuban scientific production in Public Health and Medicine to determine if they follow the same patterns of scientific communication and the recommended best practices for publication. Bibliometric indicators of quantity, visibility and cooperation were extracted from the SCImago Institutions Rankings website, which is based on Scopus data, in the field of Medicine and category of Public Health, Environmental and Occupational Health from 2003 to 2011. Cuba has a relatively high position in the rankings of scientific production in both Medicine and Public Health within the international and regional contexts, but its impact is ranked among the last countries. The production trend of both fields has increased, but public health is increasing faster. Leadership is high, but international collaboration is below expectations. Publication in high impact journals (first quartile) and articles in the set 10% most cited documents (excellence) are scarce. Thus, it may be concluded that the volume and impact of publication are not in accordance with the scientific potential of Cuban health. We recommend increasing scientific cooperation, publishing articles in high impact journals, training human resources and following the international recommendations for good editorial and scientific publication practices., [ES] El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar la evolución del volumen y la visibilidad de la producción científica cubana en Salud Pública y en Medicina para determinar si siguen los mismos patrones de comunicación, y recomendar buenas prácticas de publicación. Se aplicaron indicadores bibliométricos de volumen, visibilidad y colaboración extraídos del portal SCImago Institutions Rankings a partir de datos de Scopus, para el área temática Medicine y la categoría Public Health, Environmental and Occupational Health, período 2003-2011. Cuba tiene una posición relativamente alta en los rankings de volumen de producción científica tanto en Medicina como en Salud Pública en los contextos internacionales y regionales, mientras que en impacto está entre los últimos países. La tendencia de la producción es al crecimiento, aunque en Salud Pública es más acelerado. El liderazgo es alto, pero la colaboración internacional está por debajo de lo esperado. La publicación en revistas de alto impacto (primer cuartil) y los artículos en el 10% más citado (excelencia) son escasos. Se concluye que el volumen y el impacto de la publicación no están acorde al potencial científico de salud cubana. Se recomienda incrementar la colaboración científica, la publicación de artículos en revistas de alto impacto, la preparación de los recursos humanos y seguir las recomendaciones internacionales sobre las buenas prácticas de edición y publicación científica.

This study provides a preliminary analysis of the international profiles in collaboration and mobility using the seven countries indicated in the US executive order of January 27, 2017. The objective of this research is to analyze the flow of knowledge between countries and the relative importance of specific countries in order to inform evidence-based science policy. The work serves as a proof-of-concept of the utility of asymmetry and affinity indexes for collaboration and mobility. Comparative analyses of these indicators can be useful for informing immigration policies and motivating collaboration and mobility initiatives. Our analysis reinforces many of the established understandings of collaboration and mobility relationships—emphasizing the importance of geographic and cultural similarities. The analysis also explores the varied lenses on the importance of particular countries, when viewed from egocentric and relational perspectives. Our analysis suggests that comparisons of collaboration and mobility from an affinity perspective can identify gaps for mobility initiatives, given established scientific relationships. Since the discovery of the promising properties of graphene, research in the field has attracted numerous grants and sponsors, leading to an exponential rise in the number of papers and applications. This article presents a global map of graphene research and its intellectual structure, drawn using the terms of more than 50,000 documents extracted from Scopus database, years 1998–2015. The unit of analysis consisted of descriptors (including Author Keywords and Indexed Keywords), with the co-occurrence of descriptor as the unit of measure, using fractional counting. The main research lines identified are: Fundamental Research, Functionalization and Biomedical Applications, Technology and Devices, Materials Science, Energy Storage, Optics and Chemical Properties and Sensors. Using overlay maps, we depict the graphene research efforts of the United States, the European Union (Europe-28), and China, and project their evolution through longitudinal maps to facilitate comparison. The United States was initially at the head of world output in graphene research but was surpassed by China in 2011 and by Europe in 2014, as a result of their respective scientific policies and financial support. The output of China has since been so intense that it can be said to mark graphene research trends. We believe this information may be valuable for the core community involved in this scientific field, as it offers a large-scale analysis showing how research has changed over time. It is therefore also helpful for policymakers and research planners. The resulting maps are a useful and attractive tool for the graphene research community, as they reveal the main lines of exploration at a glance. Miao, Lili, Murray, Dakota, Chinchilla-Rodríguez, Zaida, Larivière, Vincent and Sugimoto, Cassidy Rose. ‘Glass Boundaries: Differences in Interdisciplinarity Between Men and Women’. 22st International Conference on Science and Technology Indicators, STI2017. Paris, France, 6-8 September 2017., Federal funding agencies have invested resources into promoting interdisciplinary research as well as diversity, hoping to see returns in innovation. But most past research tends to explore only one of these topic, and tends to focus on their benefits to scientific impact, rather than the individual decisions of researchers. This study provides a preliminary analysis of gender differences in interdisciplinary research. Using the Academic Analytics dataset, we calculated the percentage of interdisciplinary researchers in each discipline, and explore the composition of disciplines with which these researchers are affiliated. We find that while female and male researchers are equally likely to engage in interdisciplinary research, there are statistically significant differences in the composition of disciplines to which men and women affiliate. These results offer initial insight into how men and women navigate disciplinary boundaries in their research, and paves the way for more thorough investigation.

The selected unit of analysis was the KeyWords Plus descriptors (KW+), the unit of measurement was their co-occurrence, and the Pajek and VOSviewer tools were used to generate and display the social networks. The results show two complementary images of research: the static structure, distinguishing between clinical and basic research, and the evolutionary dynamic, analysing both the most established and the emerging lines. Subject classification arises as an important topic for bibliometrics and scientometrics as to develop reliable and consistent tools and outputs. For this matter, a well delimited underlying subject classification scheme reflecting science fields becomes essential. Within the broad ensemble of classification techniques clustering analysis is one of the most successful. Two clustering algorithms based on modularity, namely, VOS and Louvain methods, are presented in order to update and optimise journal classification of SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) platform. We used network analysis and visualization software Pajek to run both algorithms on a network of more than 18,000 SJR journals combining three citation-based measures, that is, direct citation, co-citation and bibliographic coupling. The set of clusters obtained was termed through category labels assigned to SJR journals and significant words from journal titles. Despite of both algorithms exhibiting slight performance differences, the results showed a similar behaviour in grouping journals and, consequently, they seem to be appropriate solutions for classification purposes. The two new generated algorithm-based classifications were compared to other bibliometric classification systems such as the original SJR one and WoS Subject Categories in order to validate their consistency, adequacy and accuracy. Although there are notable differences among the four classification systems analysed, we found a certain coherence and homogeneity among them.

This paper presents a comparative benchmarking of scientometric indicators to characterize the patterns of publication and research performance at the country level, in a specific field (nanoscience and nanotechnology) during the period 2003–2013. The aim was to assess how decisive collaboration may be in attaining a sound level of scientific performance, and how important leadership is for publication. To this end, we used a new methodological approach that contributes to the debate about scientific autonomy or dependency of countries in their scientific performance, and which may serve as an aid in decision-making with regard to research management. The results reveal that in terms of output, USA and China are the main producers; and due to the huge increase in their publications, Iran, India, and Australia can be considered emerging countries. The results highlight USA, Ireland, and Singapore as the countries with the highest levels of normalized citation impact, scientific excellence, and good management of leadership, all of which suggest strong scientific development and scientific autonomy. Also worth mentioning is the high visibility and scientific consolidation of China and Australia, despite the meager growth of their output. Moreover, the performance results indicate that in most cases the countries whose pattern of publication is more international tend to have greater visibility. Yet, a high degree of leadership does not always translate as a high performance level; the contrary is often true. La Havana, Cuba, October 31- November 4, 2016., International collaboration in the creation of knowledge is responsible to change the structural stratification of science having profound implications for the governance of science. Analysis of collaboration in Latin American and Caribbean countries is of particular significance, because initiatives are often the result of “research-for-aid” arrangements, generally based on North–South asymmetries. However, collaboration for mutual benefit and excellence has gained increasing acceptance, with “partner” selection becoming a strategic priority to enhance one’s own production. The general aim of this study is to quantify the benefit rate in visibility and impact of scientific production in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology (NST) bearing in mind the different types of output (total, in leadership, excellent, and excellent with leadership) of the six main producers of knowledge in NST in Latin America in the period 2003-2013. More specifically we aspire to visualize the networks of international collaboration in a given country (ego-network) to represent the difference between the citations received per type of output, and identify the associates with whom a country has greater potential and capacity to generate knowledge of high quality, as well as the differences existing in terms of visibility depending on the type of production analyzed. In short, we wish to determine the benefits of such collaborative efforts. Autonomy vs. dependency of scientific collaboration in scientific performance . 21st International Conference on Science and Technology Indicators, STI2016. Valencia, Spain, 14-16 September 2016, This study explores the capacity of Latin America in the generation of scientific knowledge and its visibility at the global level. The novelty of the contribution lies in the decomposition of leadership, plus its combination with the results of performance indicators. We compare the normalized citation of all output against the leading output, as well as scientific excellence (Chinchilla, et al. 2016a; 2016b), technological impact and the trends in collaboration types and normalized citation. The main goal is to determine to what extent the main Latin American producers of scientific output depend on collaboration to heighten research performance in terms of citation; or to the contrary, whether there is enough autonomy and capacity to leverage its competitiveness through the design of research and development agendas. Despite the severe constraints on resources resulting from the U.S. embargo, the results achieved by this sector have contributed to put the country’s health indicators at the same level of high-income nations. Recently, the creation of BioCubaFarma as a cluster of high-technology enterprises organized around a closed cycle model becomes one of the most relevant efforts of the Island in order to make biopharmaceuticals one of the country’s leading export earners. The main aim of the current paper was to characterize BioCubaFarma through a battery of Scopus-based bibliometric indicators. A comparison with the most productive multinational pharmaceutical companies was made. Regression analysis of annual productivity, number of citations, scientific talent pool, innovative knowledge and other citation-based indicators was performed. Differences and similarities between BioCubaFarma and multinational companies in four Scopus subject categories related to this sector were identified. The most productive and visible institutions from BioCubaFarma were also characterized. Qualified human resources, innovative knowledge, leadership, high specialization in the field of vaccines development and non-dependence of international collaboration are strengths of the organization. However, it is still necessary to increase the number of articles published in highly visible journals with the aim to achieve a better citation-based performance. The paper introduces the use of blockmodeling in the micro-level study of the internal structure of co-authorship networks over time. Variations in scientific productivity and researcher or research group visibility were determined by observing authors' role in the core-periphery structure and crossing this information with bibliometric data. Three techniques were applied to represent the structure of collaborative science: (1) the blockmodeling; (2) the Kamada-Kawai algorithm based on the similarities in co-authorships present in the documents analysed; (3) bibliometrics to determine output volume, impact and degree of collaboration from the bibliographic data drawn from publications. The goal was to determine the extent to which the use of these two complementary approaches, in conjunction with bibliometric data, provides greater insight into the structure and characteristics of a given field of scientific endeavour. The paper describes certain features of Pajek software and how it can be used to study research group composition, structure and dynamics. The approach combines bibliometric and social network analysis to explore scientific collaboration networks and monitor individual and group careers from new perspectives. Its application on a small-scale case study is intended as an example and can be used in other disciplines. Domestic citation to papers from the same country and the greater citation impact of documents involving international collaboration are two phenomena that have been extensively studied and contrasted. Here, however, we showthat it is not somuch a national bias,but that papers have a greater impact on their immediate environments, an impact that is diluted as that environment grows. For this reason, the greatest biases are observed in countries with a limited production. Papers that involve international collaboration have a greater impact in general, on the one hand, because they have multiple “immediate environments,” and on the other because of their greater quality or prestige. In short, one can say that science knows no frontiers. DOI: 10.1057/ivs.2009.31, In this study, visual representations are created in order to analyze different aspects of scientific collaboration at the international level. The main objective is to identify the international facet of research by following the flow of knowledge as expressed by the number of scientific publications, and then establishes the main geographical axes of output, showing the interrelationships of the domain, the intensity of these relations, and how the different types of collaboration are reflected in terms of visibility. Thus, the methodology has a twofold application, allowing us to detect significant differences that help characterize patterns of behaviour of a geographical system of output, along with the generation of representations that serve as interfaces for domain analysis and information retrieval.

The final authenticated version is available online at: https://doi.org/10.1007/s11192-014-1414-4”., Argentina´s patterns of publication in the humanities and social sciences were studied for the period 2003-2012, using the Scopus database and distinguishing the geographic realm of the research. The results indicate that “topics of national scope” have grown and gained international visibility. They can be broadly characterized as having Spanish as the language of publication, and a marked preference for single authorship; in contrast, the publication of “global topics”, not geographically limited, characteristically have English as the language of divulgation, and institutional collaboration is stronger and more consolidated. Citation is apparently not determined only by the geographic realm of research, but also by language of publication, co-authorship, and the profiles of the journals where published. These results could contribute to constructive reflection upon publishing policy. The existence of a community of journals that tolerates biased patterns may make researchers echo and perpetuate poor practices, constructing or adapting the channels of communication. Such results also prove useful as a point of reference when evaluation criteria are elaborated by scientific committees, as unsupervised promotion and evaluation patterns could become based on local or overly subjective precepts, disregarding the disciplinary practices of the international scientific community., This work was made possible through financing by the Project PICT-2011-2183 “Argentina como objeto de estudio en la producción científica con visibilidad regional e internacional. [EN] Local and global issues in the Argentinian scientific production in Scopus, 2008-2012. National and international dimensions of the research. Since the beginning of this century in Argentina scientific and technological policies show a clear interest in producing knowledge aimed at solving social, productive and environmental local problems. The bibliometric field has been studying the scientific production in the different countries around the world, and there is a background that focus its attention in Argentine scientific production. However, there are only a few studies on scientific production focused on Argentine local issues. The objective of this work is to analyze and describe the relation between the local and the global researches of the Argentine scientific production in Scopus since 2008 to 2012, and compare publishing, collaboration and leadership indicators from national and international dimensions. Results show that a quarter of the scientific production is focused on local topics of interest such as Social Sciences, Economy, Management, Agricultural and Biological Sciences, Earth and Planetary Sciences and Environmental Sciences. A high percent of this production is published in foreign journals. Researches in local topics are mainly carried out with national collaboration or without any kind of collaboration. A third part of the papers are made with international collaboration. However, it depends on the different disciplines. Also, there is a high percent of local and global scientific production led by researchers from Argentine institutions in all disciplines., [ES] En Argentina, desde comienzos del presente siglo, las políticas científicas y tecnológicas explícitas evidencian un claro interés en la producción de conocimientos orientados a la resolución de problemas sociales, productivos y medioambientales de carácter local. Desde la bibliometría se vienen realizando estudios sobre la producción científica de los países, existiendo varios antecedentes que enfocan la atención en la producción científica argentina. Sin embargo, son incipientes y escasos los trabajos sobre la producción científica enfocada a temas locales. Los objetivos de esta investigación son analizar y describir la relación entre lo local y lo global en la producción científica argentina con visibilidad en Scopus en el período 2008-2012, y comparar indicadores de publicación, colaboración y liderazgo desde las dimensiones nacionales e internacionales de las prácticas de comunicación científica. Los resultados muestran que una cuarta parte de la producción está orientada a temas locales, con destacada presencia de contribuciones en Ciencias sociales, Economía y Administración, Ciencias agrícolas y biológicas, Ciencias de la tierra y relacionadas con el ambiente. Un alto porcentaje de esta producción se publica en revistas extra-regionales. Hay un mayor predominio de investigación en colaboración nacional y sin colaboración en los temas locales. Sin embargo casi un tercio de la producción se realizó en colaboración internacional, con diferencias porcentuales según las disciplinas. [EN] Objective: to characterize the Cuban pattern of scientific communication in public health in Scopus database on the basis of the output and collaboration patterns and their influence on the impact of publications., Methods: bibliometric indicators of output, visibility and collaboration taken from SCImago Institutions Rankings and SCImago Journal and Country Rank portals were used, according to Scopus database, in the Public Health, Environmental and Occupational Health category in 2003-2011 period., Results: the communication pattern showed an increasing tendency of the scientific output, with great leadership of Cuban authors and poor national and international collaboration. This increase did not have a higher impact on the international community; 7.22 % of documents were published in high impact journals and 2.16 % were among excellence documents. The excellence output with leadership was almost non-existent. Seventy five percent of the output was seen in low impact journals (fourth quartile) and most of it in national journals. The English output accounted for less than 30% of the total amount but had higher impact than the Spanish articles., Conclusions: the pattern of Cuban scientific communication in public health was characterized, in which low number of English publications, of publications in high impact journals and poor national and international collaborations are factors that may influence on the low scientific impact. These results can be used to supplement the assessment of research in public health within the tenth basic function of this specialty., [ES] Objetivo: caracterizar el patrón cubano de comunicación científica en salud pública en la base de datos Scopus a partir de los patrones de producción y colaboración y su influencia en el impacto de las publicaciones., Métodos: se aplicaron indicadores bibliométricos de producción, visibilidad y colaboración extraídos de los portales SCImago Institutions Rankings y SCImago Journal and Country Rank a partir de datos de Scopus, categoría Public Health, Environmental and Occupational Health, período 2003-2011., Resultados: el patrón de comunicación presentó una tendencia al incremento de la producción científica con un alto liderazgo de autores cubanos y escasa colaboración nacional e internacional. Este incremento no repercutió en un mayor impacto en la comunidad internacional; el 7,22 % de los documentos aparecieron en revistas de alto impacto, y el 2,16 % entre los documentos de excelencia. La producción de excelencia con liderazgo fue casi inexistente. El 75 % de la producción se ubicó en revistas de bajo impacto (cuarto cuartil) y la mayoría en revistas nacionales. La producción en inglés representó menos del 30 % del total y alcanzaron mayor impacto que los artículos en español., Conclusiones: se caracterizó el patrón de comunicación científica cubano en salud pública, donde la poca publicación en inglés, en revistas de alto impacto y la insuficiente colaboración nacional e internacional son factores que pudieran estar influenciando en el bajo impacto científico. Estos resultados pueden utilizarse como complemento de la evaluación de la investigación en salud pública en el marco de su décima función esencial. [ES] En este trabajo presentamos la estructura de la investigación científica española durante el período comprendido entre 1990 y 2005. Basándonos en la cocitación de categorías ISI, que comprenden las ciencias naturales, las ciencias sociales y el arte y las humanidades, y combinando el análisis de redes sociales (ARS) con algoritmos de poda como pathfindernetorks (Pfnet) y otros algoritmos de representación de la información como el de Kamada–Kawai, mostramos la estructura básica de la ciencia española a través de sus relaciones esenciales. El resultado son unos mapas bibliométricos con forma de neurona y con un gran axón central (cienciogramas) que ponen de manifiesto la macro–estructura, micro– estructura y columna vertebral de la investigación española, que permiten su análisis e interpretación., [EN] This article presents the structure of Spanish science from 1990 to 2005. Based on ISI subject–category co–citation, including natural sciences, social sciences and arts & humanities, and combining both social network analysis (SNA) and pruning algorithms such as pathfinder–networks (Pfnet) and other information layout algorithms like Kamada– Kawai’s, the basic structure of Spanish science is shown through its essential relations. The results are bibliometric– maps (scientograms) revealing the macrostructure, microstructure and the backbone of Spanish science and making possible its analysis and explanation.

The use of a spatial metaphor allows us to illustrate, analyze and compare domains in terms of the categories and their interconnections or links. [Background] In the greater framework of the essential functions of Public Health, our focus is on a systematic, objective, external evaluation of Latin American scientific output, to compare its publications in the area of Public Health with those of other major geographic zones. We aim to describe the regional distribution of output in Public Health, and the level of visibility and specialization, for Latin America; it can then be characterized and compared in the international context., [Methods] The primary source of information was the Scopus database, using the category “Public Health, Environmental and Occupational Health”, in the period 1996–2011. Data were obtained through the portal of SCImago Journal and Country Rank. Using a set of qualitative (citation-based), quantitative (document recount) and collaborative (authors from more than one country) indicators, we derived complementary data. The methodology serves as an analytical tool for researchers and scientific policy-makers., [Results] The contribution of Latin America to the arsenal of world science lies more or less midway on the international scale in terms of its output and visibility. Revealed as its greatest strengths are the high level of specialization in Public Health and the sustained growth of output. The main limitations identified were a relative decrease in collaboration and low visibility., [Conclusions] Collaboration is a key factor behind the development of scientific activity in Latin America. Madrid: Fundación Conocimiento y Desarrollo, 2014, p. 240-250, Como en ediciones anteriores, el objetivo es presentar los principales indicadores de producción científica de España, referidos al total de la producción del país, y al conjunto de las principales instituciones productivas que lo conforman. La posición de la ciencia española a partir de estos indicadores se enmarca desde una perspectiva internacional, permitiendo un análisis comparado de su situación y evolución en el contexto mundial. La validez de estos indicadores bibliométricos como medida de la producción y visibilidad de los resultados de investigación está asociada al grado en que estos resultados se transmiten a través de publicaciones científicas en forma de artículos. Se ha intentado utilizar el rango cronológico más amplio en todos los casos para caracterizar en el tiempo la producción científica nacional, y para esto, se han incorporado distintas ventanas temporales que ilustran los cambios producidos en la forma de publicación de la investigación española. Los indicadores y las dimensiones que se analizan son: el volumen de la producción científica a partir del número total de publicaciones; una aproximación al uso y consumo de los resultados científicos por parte de los investigadores a partir del promedio de citas que reciben dichas publicaciones; la calidad relativa a través del índice normalizado de impacto –respecto a la media mundial– de un país, región o institución (lo que permite comparar unidades con especializaciones científicas y temáticas muy diversas); el factor de impacto de la revista de publicación (mide la visibilidad) y, específicamente, el porcentaje de publicaciones en aquellas revistas clasificadas en el primer cuartil, según su impacto; el porcentaje de excelencia científica que indica la cantidad de producción científica que se ha incluido en el grupo del 10% de trabajos más citados de su campo científico a nivel mundial; el porcentaje de liderazgo científico y la proporción de colaboración internacional en las publicaciones. Para el cálculo de este último indicador, la asignación de las publicaciones a países, regiones o instituciones se realiza siguiendo el criterio de cuenta completa, esto es, que un documento es atribuido en la contabilización, por ejemplo, a todos y cada uno de los países que tenían participación conjunta en el mismo. Madrid: Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología, 2014, El objetivo del informe es disponer de un instrumento de análisis con información objetiva, útil e independiente, tanto en el origen de los datos como en la generación de indicadores, para realizar diagnósticos basados en el desempeño científico del país, detectar fortalezas y debilidades de los resultados de su investigación, e identificar patrones y tendencias en la comunicación científica que puedan afectar a su posición futura. En esta edición se presentan comparaciones de España con algunos países y con la media del mundo para el periodo 2003-2011. Las comparaciones internacionales se realizan con los países de la OCDE, la Europa de los 28 y los países emergentes denominados BRIICS (Brasil, Rusia, India, Indonesia, China y Sudáfrica), y se comparan las tendencias de la producción científica española con los principales países europeos como Reino Unido, Alemania, Francia e Italia y también con la India. La media del mundo se calcula sobre el total de la producción mundial. Los temas analizados están en consonancia con los ejes prioritarios de las actuales políticas del Plan Estatal de Investigación Científica y Técnica y de Innovación 2013-2016.
