2. Room temperature large spontaneous exchange bias in hard-soft antiferromagnetic composite BiFeO3-TbMnO3

Abstract

We report the presence of giant spontaneous exchange bias (HSEB) in a hard and soft antiferromagnetic composite of BiFeO3-TbMnO3 (BFO-TMO in 7:3 and 8:2 ratio). The HSEB varies between 5-778Oe, but persists up to room temperature with a maximum near a spin reorientation transition temperature observed from magnetization vs. temperature measurement in Zero-field cooled (ZFC) and Field cooled (FC) modes. Isothermal remnant magnetization measurements at room temperature indicate the presence of an interfacial layer of a 2 dimensional dilute antiferromagnet in a field (2D DAFF). A stable value of the exchange bias has been observed via training effect measurements which signify the role of interfacial exchange coupling in the system. Based on the experimental results we explain the presence of the giant spontaneous exchange bias on the basis of a strong strain-mediated magnetoelectriccoupling induced exchange interaction and the creation of 2D DAFF layer at the interface. Theproperties of this layer are defined by canting and pinning of BFO spins at the interface with TMO due to Fe and Mn interaction. X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) confirms the presence of canted antiferromagnetic ordering of BiFeO3, charge transfer between Mn ions and different magnetically coupled layers which play vital role in getting the exchange bias.

Abstract

Hydrogen obtained from electrochemical water splitting is the most promising clean energy carrier, which is hindered by the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Thus, the development of an efficient OER electrocatalyst using nonprecious 3d transition elements is desirable. Multielement synergistic effect and lattice oxygen oxidation are two well-known mechanisms to enhance the OER activity of catalysts. The latter is generally related to the high valence state of 3d transition elements leading to structural destabilization under the OER condition. We have found that Al doping in nanosheet Ni–Fe hydroxide exhibits 2-fold advantage: (1) a strong enhanced OER activity from 277 mV to 238 mV at 10 mA cm–2as the Ni valence state increases from Ni3.58+to Ni3.79+observed from in situX-ray absorption spectra. (2) Operational stability is strengthened, while weakness is expected since the increased NiIVcontent with 3d8L2(L denotes O 2p hole) would lead to structural instability. This contradiction is attributed to a reduced lattice oxygen contribution to the OER upon Al doping, as verified through in situRaman spectroscopy, while the enhanced OER activity is interpreted as an enormous gain in exchange energy of FeIV–NiIV, facilitated by their intersite hopping. This study reveals a mechanism of Fe–Ni synergy effect to enhance OER activity and simultaneously to strengthen operational stability by suppressing the contribution of lattice oxygen.

Abstract

The non-equilibrium transportation of two-dimensional electrons through a narrow channel is investigated under the influence of the Rashba interaction. By introducing suitable lifetime in the Green's function, the average spin values can be calculated from the ballistic regime to the diffusive regime. It is shown that the spin accumulation is a combined effect of the spin current and disorders. In the diffusive regime, disorders offer a mechanism to stop the spin current and generate the spin accumulation. In the ballistic regime, spins are more spread out and do not have definite signs. Further consideration indicates that the inclusion of ferromagnetic spin-spin interaction increases the spin accumulation near the edge., Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, to appear in Journal of magnetism and magnetic materials

Abstract

Few studies have explored the learning difficulties and misconceptions that students encounter when using information and communication technology for e-learning. To address this issue, this research developed a system for evaluating the learning efficiency of medical students by applying two-tier diagnosis assessment. The effectiveness of the proposed system was evaluated in 11 resident doctors of dermatology enrolled according to a one-group pre- and post-test experimental design. After using the proposed e-learning system, the resident doctors had significantly improved learning efficiency and high satisfaction with the system functions. Although the number of subjects in this study was low, the significant improvements in clinical skills observed at the end of the educational training program indicate that the proposed integrated e-learning system is user-friendly and effective for self-education in the diagnosis skills required by medical students and dermatology residents.

Abstract

The magnetic property of a 0.7BiFeO3-0.3TbMnO3 composite has been studied in detail and compared with that of 0.8BiFeO3-0.2TbMnO3. The magnetic properties in 0.7BiFeO3-0.3TbMnO3 are improved in manifold compared to BiFeO3. An exchange bias (HEB) is observed in both the compositions of these antiferromagnetic composites, which varies between 5 and 180 Oe with a maximum at ∼275 K. Isothermal remanent magnetization measurements at room temperature indicate the presence of an interfacial layer of a 2-dimensional dilute uniaxial antiferromagnet in a uniform magnetic field (2D DAFF). The presence of exchange bias can be explained on the basis of a strong strain-mediated magnetoelectric coupling induced exchange interaction and the creation of a 2D DAFF layer at the interface. The properties of this layer are defined by canting and pinning of BiFeO3 spins at the interface with TbMnO3 due to Fe and Mn interaction. 22. Association Between Muscle Strength and the Risk of Dysphagia Among Elderly in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu

Abstract

Dysphagia affects 5 to 10% of Malaysia's elderly population [1]. Dysphagia is a sort of anomaly that causes discomfort and difficulty swallowing that could be caused by age-related disorders such as stroke, malignancy, and muscle diseases [2]. If left unaddressed, swallowing impairment can lead to social isolation, aspiration pneumonia, and nutritional issues [3–5]. As predicted by 2030, Malaysia will have a 14% rise in the population aged ≥ 60 years old [6]. Thus, a rise in age-related illnesses such as sarcopenia, Parkinson’s disease (PD), and dementia may lead to an increase in the prevalence of dysphagia among the elderly. This cross-sectional study was conducted from April to June 2022 in a rehabilitation center in Kuala Nerus with 61 participants aged ≥ 60 years old. The muscle strength was measured using the Camry Electronic Hand Dynamometer, which helps to assess the overall muscle strength from a handgrip [7]. This device is light and comes with grooves for finger placement that is more ideal for usage by the elderly. Meanwhile, the risk of dysphagia was evaluated using the Malay version of the 10-item Eating Assessment Tool (M-EAT-10) since it applies to a wide spectrum of swallowing problems [8]. The mean age of participants was (65.67 ± 5.62 years) with 43% being males and 57% being females. Most of the participants were married (77%), have more than one comorbidity (56%), and originates from B40 households (62%). Those who scored ≤ 2 in EAT-10 were 29 (48%) participants while 32 (53%) participants scored ≥ 3 showing a risk of dysphagia. Analysis showed 58% of males presented muscle strength of below 26.00 kg while 42% have normal muscle strength. Similarly, 54% presented with muscle strength of below 18.00 kg while 46% have normal muscle strength among females. There is an association between muscle strength and the risk of dysphagia for both males (p = 0.001) and females (p < 0.001). This study found a higher prevalence of those at risk of dysphagia compared to those with no risk of dysphagia. There is also an association between muscle strength and the risk of dysphagia for both genders in this study [9,10]. Dysphagia was significantly associated with muscle strength among the elderly in Kuala Nerus. Some limitations in this study include the lack of participants and the source of the population.

Abstract

The synthesis of transition metal oxides is typically time- and energy-consuming. Recently, fast sintering methods have demonstrated great potential in reducing ceramic sintering time and energy use, improving the commercial prospects of these materials. In this article, a quenched ultrafast high-temperature sintering (qUHS) technique is developed to sinter metastable brownmillerite SrCoO2.5 (SCO) in less than a minute. Surprisingly, SCO fabricated by qUHS shows higher activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) than solid-state-reaction-synthesized SCO. Comparing samples produced by these two techniques, the increased OER performance of SCO qUHS is likely due to the synergistic combination of surface Co chemical state, higher mesoporosity, and enhanced hydroxyl ion (OH–) adsorption. This work demonstrates the potential of qUHS for producing high-performance electrocatalysts and provides detailed insights into the impact of ultrafast sintering on the materials’ physical properties and electrocatalytic activity.

A lack of sleep is a modifiable risk factor for poor health, such as the risk of obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome. This article summarises significant studies that explore the assessment of body weight status and sleep quality and their association. A literature search was conducted in the electronic databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, MEDLINE Complete at EBSCOhost and Scopus. The findings on the association between sleep quality and body weight status were inconsistent. Both short and long sleep duration were associated with obesity status. Overall, a positive relationship between sleep and obesity in adults was observed. Further research on sleep quality and its association with body weight status among adults is needed. Better health is associated with a longer and sufficient duration of sleep. Therefore, it is of great significance to enhance the public's awareness of their sleep quality on body weight status. 40. High-Pressure Synthesis and Magnetism of the 4H-BaMnO3Single Crystal and Its 6H-Type Polymorph

Abstract

A 4H-type BaMnO3single crystal was prepared by combining the floating zone method with high-pressure treatment at 5 GPa and 1023 K. The crystal crystallizes to a hexagonal structure with space group P63/mmcand lattice parameters a= 5.63723(5) Å and c= 9.22355(8) Å. In this structure, face-sharing MnO6octahedral dimers connect with each other by corner O atoms along the c-axis direction, forming an -A-B-A-C-type 4Harrangement. A long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition is found to occur at TN≈ 263 K. When the synthesis pressure increases to 20 GPa, a new polymorphic phase is obtained. This higher-pressure phase still possesses the hexagonal P63/mmcsymmetry, but the lattice parameters change to be a= 5.61349(2) Å and c= 13.66690(9) Å with a unit cell volume reduction of 2.05%. In this new phase, the c-axis MnO6dimers are separated by MnO6octahedral layers in the abplane, forming an -A–B-C-A-C-B-type 6Hstructure. The 6Hphase exhibits two long-range AFM orderings at TN1≈ 220 K and TN2≈ 25 K, respectively. The different magnetic properties are discussed on the basis of the detailed structural constitutions of 4H- and 6H-BaMnO3.

Malnutrition is a common phenomenon in stroke survivors. However, the extent of malnutrition and their associated factors in stroke survivors are yet to be discovered. This study aims to determine the prevalence of malnutrition and the factors associated with it. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 169 stroke survivors in Terengganu, Malaysia. Sociodemographic and clinical data were recorded using a structured questionnaire. Nutritional status was assessed using body mass index (BMI). Malnutrition was defined either BMI <18.5 kg/m2 for subjects <60 years or BMI <20.0 kg/m2 for subjects ≥60 years. Multivariable logistic regression was performed. The prevalence of malnutrition was 8.9% (men 55.0%, 51.5% were 60 years or older, with a median age of 60.0 ± 14.0 years. Median BMI was 25.4 ± 7.2 kg/m2. Age was significantly associated with good nutritional status (adjusted OR, 1.10; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.17; p=0.004). However, it is not associated with gender, educational level, household income, smoking history, previous stroke, and post-stroke physical condition.
