Kindermishandeling komt helaas veel voor: ongeveer drie procent van alle kinderen ervaart emotionele of fysieke verwaarlozing, emotioneel of fysiek geweld en/of seksueel misbruik. Kindermishandeling is niet altijd zichtbaar voor een buitenstaander en komt in alle lagen van de bevolking voor. Er zijn verschillende factoren (in het gezin, in de omgeving, bij de ouder en/of bij het kind) die het risico op kindermishandeling vergroten. In de aanpak van kindermishandeling komt steeds meer aandacht voor het verkleinen van deze risico´s. Jonge kinderen (van nul tot drie jaar) lopen groter risico op kindermishandeling dan oudere kinderen. Jonge kinderen zijn sterk afhankelijk van hun ouders en onveiligheid heeft een grote invloed op hun ontwikkeling. Maar juist ouders van hele jonge kinderen zijn vaker onzeker, niet goed voorbereid of uit balans. Stressvolle omstandigheden kunnen het ouderschap bovendien nog meer onder druk zetten. Extra aandacht voor aanstaande ouders en ouders van jonge kinderen is daarom belangrijk ter preventie van kindermishandeling. When we think of child abuse, we imagine several different forms of harmful parenting and injuries to children. Most are not visible to the naked eye, but can be seen if you look more deeply. X-rays can detect fractures and other imaging can find internal injury and bleeding, but most maltreated children have more long-lasting harm that reveals itself through behavioral and emotional maladjustment, developmental delay, sadness, and other destructive behaviors later in childhood, adolescence and into adulthood. These injuries to their personality, sense of self, relationship to society and mental health change the trajectory of their lives and dim their potential, with social and financial costs for safety, treatment and their lost personal growth. We think of these as affecting everybody's children and that the responsibility lies with everyone to respond. This is why we put together this book: to address prevention from a number of perspectives and a variety of professions. We hope that it successfully brings together a number of disciplines and perspectives to address child abuse and neglect among the world's families, governments and cultures. We hope that those reading these chapters will realize that there are replicable best practices that can be reliably implemented based on child and family experiences and needs rather than single approaches designed to attack single forms of maltreatment, and we look forward to the day that books like these are not needed.

There Must Be A Witness profiles a group of child advocates in Alabama who have devoted themselves to help children thrive—and by extension, to better meet the needs of their communities. This collection of stories, narrated by Sue Bell Cobb, the state's first female Chief Justice and a former juvenile court judge, draws back the curtain on what drives such advocates. Child abuse is a modality of violence against children and adolescents which remains to be comprehensively attended. The complexity of the problem implies not only the clinical manifestations (physical, sexual and psychological abuses and neglect), but also the social component (social determinants for health) as well as the judicial implication. This makes the suspicion, diagnosis, comprehensive care of each case, the physical and emotional rehabilitation of each patient, and the strategies for the prevention of this phenomenon very difficult. Undoubtedly, child abuse is fraught with enormous emotional and economic loads for the child, the family and society. In the light of the abovementioned facts, the propositions in this book lie in the presentation and development of the most frequent and known modalities of child abuse. These modalities include physical, sexual and psychological abuses and neglect, as well as other forms like fetal abuse, ethnic maltreatment, abuse among peers, bullying, and parental alienation among others that are little known or barely considered; hence, these latter issues are not frequently seen by physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, lawyers, etc. In addition, some preventive programs that have been successful as viable strategies in many countries of the world are proposed. The aim of this book is to give a wide vision on the knowledge concerning child abuse, based on the analysis of behaviors and attitudes and revising some new strategies ensuing from information furnished by research works. The authors are convinced that the consideration of these concepts would definitely permit the elaboration of optimum and specific management for this population.

Das Buch präsentiert die erste empirische Studie zur Rolle von Hausbesuchen im Kinderschutz in Deutschland. Auf der Grundlage von vier methodischen Zugängen (quantitative Befragung von Jugendämtern, Dokumentenanalyse, Aktenanalyse und qualitative Interviews) werden typische Verfahrens- und Entscheidungslogiken in Jugendämtern in Bezug auf Hausbesuche analysiert, die Sicht der beteiligten Fachkräfte erfasst sowie Hinweise für eine fachgerechte Umsetzung von Hausbesuchen identifiziert.

This programme aims to provide children aged 4-7 years with awareness and strategies for keeping safe. Although it may be difficult to accept, children and young people from any community, including those with disabilities, can be put at risk of harm, abused or hurt, regardless of their age, gender, religion or ethnicity. All children have the right to be safeguarded from abuse or neglect so they have the opportunity to reach their potential and be successful adults. Protective behaviours teaches children to develop an awareness of personal safety; helps them to identify and express their feelings; make choices and solve problems. First Steps to Safety has taken the core protective behaviour principles and created a teaching framework with overarching aims, with supporting lesson plans, resources and activities, in a 10 week programme that can be picked up and used by anyone in school wanting to empower children and young people of any age and any capability to develop personal safety. The information and strategies provided to children are generic and applicable across a range of situations that may arise, for example bullying, internet safety, being harmed, feeling sad or feeling unsafe. Sessions include: my body parts; showing my feelings; my body, thoughts and feelings all go together; feeling safe; behaviour choices; to empower children to feel safe and know they have a right to fee safe; to give children the confidence and ability to assertively manage their own safety; to children the skills to take responsibility for their own bodies, thoughts, feelings and behaviour; to enable children with a range of communication abilities to ask for help; for children to have awareness of their body, thoughts, feelings and behaviour; have a vocabulary to express how their thoughts and feelings affect their bodies; know the early warning signs for feeling unsafe; know they can make different behaviour choices based on feelings; and know who good people are to go to for help and how to ask for help.
