8. Piezoionic sensors based on formulated PEDOT:PSS and Aquivion® for ionic polymer–polymer composites.

Abstract

In this work, an ionic polymer–polymer composites (IP2Cs) was developed as piezoionic sensors based on Aquivion® perfluorinated conducting membranes and modified PEDOT:PSS electrodes. The influence of solvent annealing, additive concentration and its nature (ionic liquid (IL), Aquivion®,...) on the electronic conductivity and the mechanical properties of modified PEDOT:PSS electrodes is investigated. The design of flexible free-standing PEDOT:PSS electrodes provides a new way of IP2Cs conception. Tri-layers are elaborated either by drop-casting or by thermocompressing of electrodes on top of commercial Aquivion® membranes swelled by an IL 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethyl-sulfonyl) imide. The open-circuit voltage output is measured during bending stimulation experiments as function of the mechanical perturbation amplitude. These IP2Cs made from Aquivion® behaves as soft mechanical strain sensors with large electrical output signal as high as ΔE = 2.9 mV (Δϵ = ±2%) under optimal conditions. The influence of the IP2C's manufacturing process, grade of Aquivion® membrane, and electrode's properties is investigated. This study emphasized the significant contribution of the electrode's mechanical properties that appears as a critical parameter for the development of high performance piezoionic sensors. In the near future, we will explore the opportunity to employ these Aquivion®-based IP2Cs as soft strain sensors for robotic and medical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Interpenetrated networks contain a first polymer of monomers of which at least one contains an arom. group functionalized by a cation-exchanging group, and a second polymer made of monomers of which at least one contains a fluorinated group. These interpenetrated polymer networks are useful for manuf. membranes of fuel cells. A typical in-situ-prepd. interpenetrating polymer membrane was manufd. by mixing a soln. contg. 50 mg AIBN, 0.9 g 3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,8,8,8-tridecafluorooctyl acrylate, and 0.1 g polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate with a dimethylacetamide soln. contg. 0.53 g 4,4'-bis(trifluorovinyloxy)-3,3'-disulfodiphenyl ketone and 0.42 g 1,1,1-tris(4-(trifluorovinyloxy)phenyl)trifluoroethane, coating the resulting soln. on a glass plate, and heating 15 h at 60, 6 h at 150, and 2 h at 150 in vacuo to remove the solvent

Abstract

Aqueous alkaline metal-air batteries represent promising energy storage devices when supplied with atmospheric air. However, under this condition, the air electrode shows a very short life time (i.e. 50 h of operation in 5 M LiOH at −10 mA cm −2 ), mainly due to the precipitation of carbonates inside the electrode porosity. The air electrode can then be protected by an anion exchange membrane on the electrolyte side. In this paper, we demonstrate that the efficiency of this protective membrane depends on the assembly method on the electrode. When a modified poly(epichlorohydrin) (PECH) network is synthesized directly on the electrode, the polymer seeps inside the electrode porosity, and a suitable interface inducing negligible additional polarization in comparison with classical pressure-assembled membranes is obtained. This protected electrode shows improved stability of up to 160 h of operation in 5 M LiOH. This performance is improved to 350 h by adjusting the conductivity and the ionic exchange capacity. Finally, the interest of interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) architecture compared to a single network is confirmed. Indeed, an electrode protected with a PECH/poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) IPN is stable for 650 h in 5 M LiOH. The article discusses the results of a study which examined the flexibility and rigidity of proton conducting poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) (PAMPS) and poly(ethylene oxide) dimethacrylate (PEGDM). The methods to study the homogeneity of conetworks are described, including dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Factors that influence the swelling behavior of the materials are cited.
