Abstract

A major goal of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is to make accurate images with resolutions of tens of milliarcseconds, which at submillimeter (submm) wavelengths requires baselines up to ~15 km. To develop and test this capability, a Long Baseline Campaign (LBC) was carried out from September to late November 2014, culminating in end-to-end observations, calibrations, and imaging of selected Science Verification (SV) targets. This paper presents an overview of the campaign and its main results, including an investigation of the short-term coherence properties and systematic phase errors over the long baselines at the ALMA site, a summary of the SV targets and observations, and recommendations for science observing strategies at long baselines. Deep ALMA images of the quasar 3C138 at 97 and 241 GHz are also compared to VLA 43 GHz results, demonstrating an agreement at a level of a few percent. As a result of the extensive program of LBC testing, the highly successful SV imaging at long baselines achieved angular resolutions as fine as 19 mas at ~350 GHz. Abstract

We have developed an FX-architecture digital spectro-correlator for the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. The correlator is able to simultaneously process four pairs of dual polarization signals with the bandwidth of 2 GHz, which are received by up to sixteen antennas. It can calculate auto- and cross-correlation spectra including cross-polarization in all combinations of all the antennas, and output correlation spectra with flexible spectral configuration such as multiple frequency ranges and multiple frequency resolutions. Its spectral dynamic range is estimated to be higher than 10^4 relative to Tsys from processing results of thermal noise for eight hours with a typical correlator configuration. The sensitivity loss is also confirmed to be 0.9 % with the same configuration. Abstract

We have made aperture synthesis observations of CS(J=1−0, 2−1) and NH3(1, 1) lines and 49, 98, and 110 GHz continuum in NGC2071-IRS with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array. We have obtained maps of these lines and continuum maps with 2″. 7-20″ resolution. We have found that dense molecular gas has a disk structure with a radial scale ranging 0.01 pc − 0.1 pc and has a ring-like structure with expanding motion at the central 5000 AU region. We also have found that there exists double dust continuum sources which are separated by 2500 AU in projection and are apparently located at the inner edges of the ring. Our observational results suggest that the disk of molecular gas has a central hole formed by wind and UV radiation from a central young stellar object, the central part is expanding, and that dust continuum emission comes from tangential parts of the shock compressed ring (r∼1300 AU, M(H2)∼ 21-34 Mo, and n(H2)∼ 109) at the most inner side of the disk structure. The other possible model of the dust continuum sources is a binary system of self-luminous young stellar objects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

DNA is constantly damaged by various external and internal factors. In particular, oxidative damage occurs in a steady state, and 8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine (oxodG) is known as the main oxidative damage. OxodG is a strong genotoxic nucleoside and is thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of cancer and neurological diseases. However, a breakthrough method to detect the position of oxodG in DNA has not yet been developed. Therefore, we attempted to develop a novel method to detect oxodG in DNA using artificial nucleosides. Recently, we have succeeded in the recognition of oxodG in DNA by a single nucleotide elongation reaction using nucleoside derivatives based on a purine skeleton with a 1,3-diazaphenoxazine unit. In this study, we developed a new nucleoside derivative with a pyrimidine skeleton in order to further improve the recognition ability and enzymatic reaction efficiency. We, therefore, designed and synthesized 2'-deoxycytidine-1,3-diazaphenoxazine (Cdap) and its triphosphate derivatives. The results showed that it was incorporated into the primer strand relative to the dG template because of its cytidine skeleton, but it was more effective at the complementary position of the oxodG template. These results indicate that the new nucleoside derivative can be considered as one of the new candidates for the detection of oxodG in DNA.

Abstract

Neurally released nitric oxide (NO) functions as an inhibitory neurotransmitter of urethral but not detrusor smooth muscles while relaxing bladder vasculature and muscularis mucosae (MM). Here, the distribution of nitrergic nerves was examined in the mucosa of pig lower urinary tract using immunohistochemistry, and their vasodilatory functions were studied by measuring arteriolar diameter changes. Properties of smooth muscle cells in the lamina propria (SMC-LP) of urethra and trigone were also investigated using florescence Ca 2+ imaging. In the bladder mucosa, neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS)-immunoreactive nitrergic fibres projected to suburothelial arterioles and venules. Perivascular nitrergic nerves were intermingled with but distinct from tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-immunoreactive sympathetic or calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-immunoreactive afferent nerves. MM receive a nitrergic but not sympathetic or afferent innervation. In the mucosa of urethra and trigone, nitrergic nerves were in close apposition with sympathetic or afferent nerves around suburothelial vasculature but did not project to SMC-LP. In suburothelial arterioles of bladder and urethra, N ω-nitro-L-arginine (L-NA, 100 μM), an NOS inhibitor, enhanced electrical field stimulation (EFS)-induced sympathetic vasoconstrictions, while tadalafil (10 nM), a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, suppressed the vasoconstrictions. SMC-LP developed asynchronous spontaneous Ca 2+ transients without responding to EFS. The spontaneous Ca 2+ transients were enhanced by acetylcholine (1 μM) and diminished by noradrenaline (1 μM) but not SIN-1 (10 μM), an NO donor. In the lower urinary tract mucosa, perivascular nitrergic nerves appear to counteract the sympathetic vasoconstriction to maintain the mucosal circulation.
