The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a prime target for studying black hole accretion and jet formation^{1,2}. Event Horizon Telescope observations of M87 in 2017, at a wavelength of 1.3 mm, revealed a ring-like structure, which was interpreted as gravitationally lensed emission around a central black hole^3. Here we report images of M87 obtained in 2018, at a wavelength of 3.5 mm, showing that the compact radio core is spatially resolved. High-resolution imaging shows a ring-like structure of 8.4_{-1.1}^{+0.5} Schwarzschild radii in diameter, approximately 50% larger than that seen at 1.3 mm. The outer edge at 3.5 mm is also larger than that at 1.3 mm. This larger and thicker ring indicates a substantial contribution from the accretion flow with absorption effects in addition to the gravitationally lensed ring-like emission. The images show that the edge-brightened jet connects to the accretion flow of the black hole. Properties extracted from uniaxial tension provide fundamental information about the strength and ductility as the first input for the structural analysis, conventionally performed by means of finite element computations. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in evaluating the mechanical properties of materials using small specimens, especially in the nuclear industry due to limited volumes available in test facilities and limitations on wastes. The application of miniaturized flat sample geometries offers a number of advantages in terms of exposure to irradiation or extraction of samples using modern tools. However, the applicability of flat geometries should be validated. Here, the equivalence and interchangeability of miniaturized flat and cylindrical tensile samples for the extraction of the tensile properties are investigated by using a combined experimental-computational study. The emphasis is put on the determination of the post-necking properties. The experiments involve uniaxial tensile tests on Eurofer97 steel at various technologically relevant temperatures. Finite element (FE) simulations are performed with the parameters of a Gurson-type constitutive law including damage, identified based on the experimental data. For the flat tensile samples, the FE simulations reproduce the experimental data with an accuracy exceeding 95% attained for such important parameters as total elongation, reduction of area, and fracture strength. The application of the FE modelling to predict the tensile properties of cylindrical samples yields an accuracy between 80% and 95%. The reasons for the reduced accuracy are discussed and ascribed to a difference in the stress triaxiality distribution and, as a result, an overestimation of the fracture strain in the cylindrical geometry.

The fault devices induced by device breakdown (BD) are unavoidable due to defect formation during fabrication or along with device cycling stress. The BD cells not only deteriorate device yield, but they also introduce sneak current and result in cell-to-cell interference in the high density crossbar array, which further produces severe array yield loss. Although the BD interference is important, methods of alleviation is less discussed. In this work, we evaluate the strategy of mitigating the strong interference between normal cells and leaky BD cells. We show that while a sufficiently high device yield is the prerequisite, optimizing cell parameters such as resistance of the BD cell and line resistance are proven crucial. However, the yield loss induced by BD interference is not easily compensated using naive redundancy designs. Therefore, a careful optimization on array partition is thus required. In this contribution, we present the results of recent neutron irradiation campaign performed in the material test reactor BR2 (Belgium) on pure tungsten. We have applied various irradiation conditions and sample geometry to assess the effect of neutron irradiation on hardness, bending, tensile and fracture mechanical properties. The investigated material is a commercially pure tungsten plate fabricated according to the international thermonuclear experimental reactor (ITER) specification for the application in the divertor plasma-facing components. The neutron irradiation covers a large span of temperatures and damage doses, ranging from 600 to 1200 °C and 0.1–1 dpa. The obtained mechanical properties were analyzed to deduce the shift of the ductile to brittle transition temperature (DBTT) applying bending, tensile and fracture toughness-testing procedures. Then, a correlation of the fracture toughness with the change of the hardness was established. The obtained results are compared with the already published results on another ITER specification grade produced in the form of a rod. The presented and discussed results show that the performance of the compared grades in terms of the irradiation-induced embrittlement is similar, and that the irradiation in the high-temperature region (600–800 °C) causes a considerable DBTT shift already at 0.2–0.5 dpa.

The UCLA Loneliness Scale, with different short versions, is widely used to assess levels of loneliness. However, whether the scale is valid in assessing loneliness among sexual-minority men is unknown. Additionally, it is unclear whether the 8-item and 3-item short versions are comparable to the full 20-item version. The present study compared the validity of the three versions of the UCLA Loneliness Scale (i.e., 20-item, 8-item, and 3-item versions) among gay and bisexual men in Taiwan. The participants comprised 400 gay and bisexual men in Taiwan who completed a cross-sectional online survey, which included the UCLA Loneliness Scale, Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and State–Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Confirmatory factor analysis was used to evaluate factorial validity. Convergent validity was examined between the three versions of the UCLA Loneliness Scale and the CES-D and STAI. Known-group validity was investigated with participants’ sexual orientation and educational levels. The unidimensional construct was supported in all three versions of the UCLA Loneliness Scale tested in the present study. Convergent validity was supported as the level of loneliness was correlated with the level of depression and anxiety for all three versions. There were no significant differences between gay and bisexual men, although significant differences were found across different educational levels. The study confirmed that all three versions of the UCLA Loneliness Scale were comparable with satisfactory reliability and validity in Taiwanese sexual-minority men.

This study investigated healthcare utilization and expenditure for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and schizophrenia and associated factors. Healthcare utilization (outpatient visits and hospitalization) and expenditure (outpatient, inpatient, and total medical expenditure) between 2002 and 2013 of patients with T2DM with schizophrenia (case group) and without (control group) were examined using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. (1) The average total numbers of outpatient visits and hospital admissions of the case group were 35.14 outpatient visits and 1.09 hospital admissions significantly higher than those of the control group in the whole study period (based on every 3-year period). Nonpsychiatric outpatient visits and nonpsychiatric hospital admissions were significantly more numerous for the case group. (2) The total outpatient expenditure, total inpatient expenditure, and total medical expenditure of the case group were NT$65,000, NT$170,000, and NT$235,000 significantly higher than those of the control group, respectively. Nonpsychiatric outpatient expenditure was significantly lower for the case group, but the inpatient and total nonpsychiatric medical expenditure were similar between groups. (3) Patients who were elder of low income, with complications, and high diabetes mellitus complication severity index had higher total numbers of outpatient visits and hospitalizations and medical expenditure. (4) Women had a higher number of outpatient visits but a lower number of hospitalization and medical expenditure. Lower non-psychiatric outpatient expenditure despite more visits indicated non-psychiatrist may not understand schizophrenia patients and cannot communicate well with them, leading to neglect of medical evaluation and treatment that should be carried out.

Cigarette smoking (CS) or ambient particulate matter (PM) exposure is a risk factor for metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance (IR), increased plasma triglycerides, hyperglycemia, and diabetes mellitus (DM); it can also cause gut microbiota dysbiosis. In smokers with metabolic disorders, CS cessation decreases the risks of serious pulmonary events, inflammation, and metabolic disorder. This review included recent studies examining the mechanisms underlying the effects of CS and PM on gut microbiota dysbiosis and metabolic disorder development; one of the potential mechanisms is the disruption of the lung–gut axis, leading to gut microbiota dysbiosis, intestinal dysfunction, systemic inflammation, and metabolic disease. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are the primary metabolites of gut bacteria, which are derived from the fermentation of dietary fibers. They activate G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling, suppress histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity, and inhibit inflammation, facilitating the maintenance of gut health and biofunction. The aforementioned gut microbiota dysbiosis reduces SCFA levels. Treatment targeting SCFA/GPCR signaling may alleviate air pollution–associated inflammation and metabolic disorders, which involve lung–gut axis disruption.

Background This study aimed to determine the association between affiliate stigma and depression in caregivers of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in Taiwan and evaluated the moderating effects of perceived family support, self-esteem, and children's behavioral problems on the association. Methods The affiliate stigma and depressive symptoms of 400 caregivers of children with ADHD were assessed using the Affiliate Stigma Scale and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, respectively. A general linear model (GLM) was used to examine the association between affiliate stigma and depression symptoms. The interaction models of the GLM and the Johnson–Neyman technique were used to examine the moderating effects of caregivers’ family support and self-esteem and children's internalizing problems and ADHD symptoms on the association. Results Affiliate stigma was positively associated with the depression level in caregivers of children with ADHD. The level of the association between affiliate stigma and depression symptoms was negatively associated with the levels of family support and self-esteem but positively associated with the levels of child's internalizing problems and ADHD symptoms. Limitations The cross-sectional design limited the possibility of determining the causal relationships among the variables. Conclusions Prevention and intervention strategies should aim to reduce affiliate stigma and depression symptoms, as well as to target the moderators of the association.

Cell-to-cell interference due to the sneak current is a known and important issue in high-density 4F2 crossbar arrays. However, the interference between normal cells and high-leakage breakdown (BD) cells is rarely discussed. We show that such interference degrades the array read and write yields dramatically based on experiments and simulation. A rule-based analytical model for BD interference is developed by leveraging the quantitative understanding of the different interference modes and their equivalent circuits. This model achieves equivalent accuracy but is at least 100 times faster than the SPICE circuit simulator. It is used in the Monte Carlo simulation for providing sensible statistics on the spatial dependence of interference. The results show that merely 3% of BD cells result in zero array yield for a crossbar array size larger than $128\times128$ . The minimal requirement of device yield (non-BD percentage) increases with the array size in order to maintain a reasonable array yield. Thus, BD interference should be recognized as one of the most critical concerns for developing future crossbar arrays.

A.; Yu, Chen-Yu; Yu, Wei; Zeballos, Milagros; Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration., We present the first Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the Galactic center source associated with a supermassive black hole. These observations were conducted in 2017 using a global interferometric array of eight telescopes operating at a wavelength of λ = 1.3 mm. The EHT data resolve a compact emission region with intrahour variability. A variety of imaging and modeling analyses all support an image that is dominated by a bright, thick ring with a diameter of 51.8 ± 2.3 μas (68% credible interval). The ring has modest azimuthal brightness asymmetry and a comparatively dim interior. Using a large suite of numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the EHT images of Sgr A* are consistent with the expected appearance of a Kerr black hole with mass ∼4 × 106 M⊙, which is inferred to exist at this location based on previous infrared observations of individual stellar orbits, as well as maser proper-motion studies. Our model comparisons disfavor scenarios where the black hole is viewed at high inclination (i > 50°), as well as nonspinning black holes and those with retrograde accretion disks. Our results provide direct evidence for the presence of a supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, and for the first time we connect the predictions from dynamical measurements of stellar orbits on scales of 103–105 gravitational radii to event-horizon-scale images and variability. Furthermore, a comparison with the EHT results for the supermassive black hole M87* shows consistency with the predictions of general relativity spanning over three orders of magnitude in central mass. © 2022. Background. The Discrimination and Stigma Scale (DISC) is a patient-reported outcome measure which assesses experiences of discrimination among persons with a mental illness globally. Methods. This study evaluated whether the psychometric properties of a short-form version, DISC-Ultra Short (DISCUS) (11-item), could be replicated in a sample of people with a wide range of mental disorders from 21 sites in 15 countries/territories, across six global regions. The frequency of experienced discrimination was reported. Scaling assumptions (confirmatory factor analysis, inter-item and item-total correlations), reliability (internal consistency) and validity (convergent validity, known groups method) were investigated in each region, and by diagnosis group. Results. 1195 people participated. The most frequently reported experiences of discrimination were being shunned or avoided at work (48.7%) and discrimination in making or keeping friends (47.2%). Confirmatory factor analysis supported a unidimensional model across all six regions and five diagnosis groups. Convergent validity was confirmed in the total sample and within all regions [ Internalised Stigma of Mental Illness (ISMI-10): 0.28–0.67, stopping self: 0.54–0.72, stigma consciousness: −0.32–0.57], as was internal consistency reliability (α = 0.74–0.84). Known groups validity was established in the global sample with levels of experienced discrimination significantly higher for those experiencing higher depression [Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)-2: p < 0.001], lower mental wellbeing [Warwick-Edinburgh Well-being Scale (WEMWBS): p < 0.001], higher suicidal ideation [Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS)-4: p < 0.001] and higher risk of suicidal behaviour [Suicidal Ideation Attributes Scale (SIDAS): p < 0.001]. Conclusions. The DISCUS is a reliable and valid unidimensional measure of experienced discrimination for use in global settings with similar properties to the longer DISC. This study aimed to examine the moderating factors of the association between perceived sexual stigma from family and peers and internalized homonegativity, as well as to compare the effects of perceived sexual stigma from family and peers and internalized homonegativity on loneliness, depression, and anxiety in gay and bisexual men. In total, 400 gay and bisexual men participated in this study. The experiences of perceived sexual stigma from family and peers on the Homosexuality subscale of the HIV and Homosexuality Related Stigma Scale, internalized homonegativity on the Measure of Internalized Sexual Stigma for Lesbians and Gay Men, loneliness on the UCLA Loneliness Scale (Version 3), depression on the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale, and anxiety on the State subscale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were collected. The results indicated that perceived sexual stigma from family and peers was significantly associated with internalized homonegativity in both gay and bisexual men, and that sexual orientation moderated the association. Moreover, the association between internalized homonegativity and loneliness was significantly greater than that between perceived sexual stigma from family and peers and loneliness, although no significant differences were observed in their associations with depression and anxiety. Intervention programs that promote changes in the attitudes toward gay and bisexual men among the general population are needed to help prevent the development of internalized homonegativity and further loneliness, depression and anxiety.

The toxic effects of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1 ) on the physiological functions of swine alveolar macrophages (SAM) were investigated. Freshly isolated SAM were incubated with various AFB1 concentrations (1.6 × 10-1 - 1.6 × 105 nmol/L) and time periods, and their phagocytic ability, synthesis of DNA, RNA and protein, and cell activation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), were analysed. Results demonstrated that a significant (p 16 nmol/L) treatment. The synthesis of DNA, RNA and protein were markedly reduced, among which DNA and protein synthesis were affected more noticeably. The activation of SAM by LPS was significantly (p
