This study investigated how Paul’s Jewish background, including some elements of pre-rabbinical Jewish literature, influenced the letter to the Galatians with regard to the concept of adoption (υἱοθεσία) (Gl 4:1–7). As Paul was writing to a Gentile audience, wanting to persuade them to return to the true gospel, metaphors of adoption, embedded in the understanding of the Graeco-Roman household, became effective communication bridges to reach his audience. Within this framework, Israel’s God was depicted as the caring father of the household, who through his son Jesus Christ redeems all human beings from the status of slaves to that of children with full rights of inheritance. Contribution: God’s redemption is not merely a forensic sense of justification but also the imagery of relationship in the household by which God does not merely set one free from sin by securing us through Jesus Christ into the society of the righteous, but also adopts us into his family.

A new species of beardfish, genus Polymixia, is described based on three specimens collected in Taiwanese waters and off the Chesterfield Islands of New Caledonia. It can be distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: dorsal-fin rays IV–V, 35–37; gill rakers on outer face of first gill arch 3+1+6=10; scales row between dorsal-fin origin and lateral line vertically 6–8 (S1) and posteriorly 12–14 (S2); pyloric caeca 40; snout rounded, with its surface rough and gelatinous, its tip evidently protrude anterior margin of premaxilla; ctenii on body scales arranged in a wedge-shape, forming three rows; 4th anal-fin spine long, 1.0%–1.2% eye diameter; longer dorsal-fin, 49.6–53.0% SL; blackish oral-branchial cavity. Our maximum-likelihood tree based on mitochondrial COI sequences revealed that the new species is distinct from six congeneric species. Our findings indicate the presence of at least six Polymixia species in Taiwan, highlighting Taiwan and adjacent areas as a region with the highest diversity of this genus.

Chronic HCV infection is a risk factor for end-stage liver disease, leading to a major burden on public health. Mitophagy is a specific form of selective autophagy that eliminates mitochondria to maintain mitochondrial integrity. HCV NS5A is a multifunctional protein that regulates the HCV life cycle and may induce host mitophagy. However, the molecular mechanism by which HCV NS5A activates mitophagy remains largely unknown. Here, for the first time, we delineate the dynamic process of HCV NS5A-activated PINK1/Parkin-dependent mitophagy. By performing live-cell imaging and CLEM analyses of HCV NS5A-expressing cells, we demonstrate the degradation of mitochondria within autophagic vacuoles, a process that is dependent on Parkin and ubiquitin translocation onto mitochondria and PINK1 stabilization. In addition, the cargo receptors of mitophagy, NDP52 and OPTN, are recruited to the mitochondria and required for HCV NS5A-induced mitophagy. Moreover, ATG5 and DFCP1, which function in autophagosome closure and phagophore formation, are translocated near mitochondria for HCV NS5A-induced mitophagy. Furthermore, autophagy-initiating proteins, including ATG14 and ULK1, are recruited near the mitochondria for HCV NS5A-triggered mitophagy. Together, these findings demonstrate that HCV NS5A may induce PINK1/Parkin-dependent mitophagy through the recognition of mitochondria by cargo receptors and the nascent formation of phagophores close to mitochondria.

Abstract Background Taiwan’s unique health behaviour, such as extensive exposure to Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM), has introduced a risk of inadvertent doping among competing athletes. Pharmacy professionals have an imperative role in advising athletes on the safe use of medicines. This study provides an overview of anti-doping knowledge and educational needs among pharmacists in Taiwan and examines influencing factors. Methods A cross-sectional online questionnaire survey consisting of five domains, namely demographic characteristics, source of prohibited substances, identification of prohibited substances, understanding of doping control, and education needs on anti-doping, was distributed to the registered pharmacists in Taiwan. In total, 491 responses were included in the analyses. Results Respondents (65% female, aged 41.9 ± 11.4 years, with 68% having a Bachelor’s degree) reported a moderate anti-doping knowledge score of 37.2 ± 4.9, ranging from 21 to 48 (out of 51). Abstract Background A minimally invasive technique with various screw configurations without open surgery is currently used for the fixation of transverse patellar fractures. Percutaneous crossing screw configuration has been reported to have a good bone union rate in patellar fractures. However, the difference in mechanical stability of the fractured patella between different screw-included angles has not been fully investigated. Hence, this study aims to compare the mechanical stability of parallel and crossing screw fixations with different screw-included angles for the fixation of transverse patellar fractures during level walking. Methods A finite element knee model containing a patella with a transverse fracture is created. Two headless compression screws with different angles (0°, 30°, 60°, and 90°) are used to fix the fracture. The loading conditions of the knee joint during level walking are used to compare the stability of the fractured patella with different fixation screw configurations. Results The results indicate that the maximum fracture gap opening distance increased with an increase in the included angle. Two parallel screws yield the smallest gap distance among all screw configurations. The maximum gap opening distances at the anterior leading edge of the fractured patella with two parallel screws and two screws having an included angle of 90° are 0.73 mm and 1.31 mm, respectively, at 15% walking cycle. Conclusions Based on these results, the superior performance of two parallel screws over crossing screw fixations in the fixation of transverse patellar fractures is established. Furthermore, the smaller the angle between the crossing screws, the better is the stability of the fractured patella.

Abstract Background Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is the treatment of choice for posttraumatic arthritis with failed internal fixation for hip fractures. However, the postoperative prognosis is not clear. Questions/purposes The primary aim of the study is to report the postoperative outcome, prognosis, and complication rates of total hip arthroplasty in posttraumatic hip arthritis after failed internal fixation of fractures around the hip. The secondary aim of the study is to report results among different fracture types around the hip. Patients and methods We enrolled salvage THA patients after failed internal fixation of fractures around the hip and matched control patients undergoing primary THA for hip osteoarthritis. Subgroup analysis was performed to compare the postoperative outcomes, prognosis, and complication rates of salvage THA in posttraumatic hip arthritis after failed internal fixation of different fracture types around the hip. Results A total of 315 THAs (105 salvage THAs and 210 primary THAs) were analyzed. Patients with salvage THA had a longer operative time, lower postoperative hemoglobin (Hb) level, more Hb drop (2.2 ± 1.4 vs. 1.7 ± 1.2 gm/dl, p = 0.002), and delayed ambulation. The salvage THA group also had a higher dislocation rate within 2 months after salvage THA (9.5% vs. 1.9%, p = 0.002), reoperation rate (10.5% vs. 3.8%, p = 0.019, including debridement, open and closed reduction under sedation, revision surgery, surgical fixation for periprosthetic fractures), and revision rate (5.7% vs. 0.5%, p = 0.003) than patients undergoing primary THA. Patients who had failed fixation for acetabular fractures were younger and tended to recover well. Patients with previous intertrochanteric fracture had the longest operative time, more hip pain (83.8%, p = 0.022) and more complications. Conclusion Salvage THA in posttraumatic hip arthritis after failed internal fixation required a longer operative time and led to more blood loss and postoperative complications. The dislocation, reoperation, and revision rates after salvage THA were higher than those after primary THA. Patients with salvage THA after failed internal fixation for intertrochanteric fractures were the most susceptible to more complications compared to those with femoral neck fracture or acetabular fracture. Abstract The rise of China as a scientific research superpower has been frequently discussed in media and literature. However, past analyses are usually based on the geographical database and they ignore how the millions of emigrated Chinese students, who are now being considered the major research workforce in many countries, affect their academic outputs. Here we quantitatively analyze the contribution of Chinese scholars in physical science around the globe by their publications in a country’s papers from 2010 to 2021 as well as their citations. Contrary to common perception, we find that increasing the number of Chinese scholars does not correlate with the net publication growth or decline in their host countries before the Chinese population exceeds a critical value. On the other hand, increasing Chinese authors in a paper improves its citations. The phenomena, though anomalous, are observed in many subfields of physics across the globe. Our analysis suggests that although Chinese scholars do not change the perceived publication capabilities of many countries but may have reshaped their research culture as well as workforce distributions. The results would be valuable for R&D, higher education, and immigration policymakers.

Purpose: Proton vertebral body sparing craniospinal irradiation (CSI) treats the thecal sac while avoiding the anterior vertebral bodies in an effort to reduce myelosuppression and growth inhibition. However, robust treatment planning needs to compensate for proton range uncertainty, which contributes unwanted doses within the vertebral bodies. This work aimed to develop an early in vivo radiation damage quantification method using longitudinal magnetic resonance (MR) scans to quantify the dose effect during fractionated CSI. Methods and Materials: Ten pediatric patients were enrolled in a prospective clinical trial of proton vertebral body sparing CSI, in which they received 23.4 to 36 Gy. Monte Carlo robust planning was used, with spinal clinical target volumes defined as the thecal sac and neural foramina. T1/T2-weighted MR scans were acquired before, during, and after treatments to detect a transition from hematopoietic to less metabolically active fatty marrow. MR signal intensity histograms at each time point were analyzed and fitted by multi-Gaussian models to quantify radiation damage. Results: Fatty marrow filtration was observed in MR images as early as the fifth fraction of treatment. Maximum radiation-induced marrow damage occurred 40 to 50 days from the treatment start, followed by marrow regeneration. The mean damage ratios were 0.23, 0.41, 0.59, and 0.54, corresponding to 10, 20, 40, and 60 days from the treatment start. Conclusions: We demonstrated a noninvasive method for identifying early vertebral marrow damage based on radiation-induced fatty marrow replacement. The proposed method can be potentially used to quantify the quality of CSI vertebral sparing and preserve metabolically active hematopoietic bone marrow.

Lung cancer, one of the most common causes of cancer-related death worldwide, has been associated with high treatment cost and imposed great burdens. The 5-year postoperative survival rate of lung cancer (13%) is lower than many other leading cancers indicating the urgent needs to dissect its pathogenic mechanisms and discover specific biomarkers. Although several proteins have been proposed to be potential candidates for the diagnosis of lung cancer, they present low accuracy in clinical settings. Metabolomics has thus emerged as a very promising tool for biomarker discovery. To date, many lung cancer-related metabolites have been highlighted in the literature but no database is available for scientists to retrieve this information. Herein, we construct and introduce the first Lung Cancer Metabolome Database (LCMD), a freely available online database depositing 2013 lung cancer-related metabolites identified from 65 mass spectrometry-based lung cancer metabolomics studies. Researchers are able to explore LCMD via two ways. Firstly, by applying various filters in the “Browse Metabolites” mode, users can access a list of lung cancer-related metabolites that satisfy the filter specifications. For each metabolite, users can acquire the value of the fold change (cancer/normal), statistical significance (p-value) of the fold change, and the comparative research designs of all the mass spectrometry-based lung cancer metabolomics studies that identify this metabolite. Secondly, by applying various filters in the “Browse Studies” mode, users can obtain a list of mass spectrometry-based lung cancer metabolomics studies that satisfy the filter specifications. For each study, users can view the type of studied specimen, mass spectrometry (MS) method, MS data processing software, and differential analysis method, as well as all the identified lung cancer-related metabolites. Furthermore, the overview of each study is clearly illustrated by a graphical summary. The LCMD (http://cosbi7.ee.ncku.edu.tw/LCMD/) is the first database that brings together the meaningful information of lung cancer-related metabolites. The development of the LCMD is envisioned to promote the biomarker discovery of lung cancer.

Abstract Introduction Partial fibular osteotomy has been recognized as a surgical alternative to treat medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee. Related peroneal neuropathies are of concern among the relatively few complications after this procedure. In our clinical practice, the osteotomy level has therefore been modified to avoid the above defects. However, a rare case of vascular injury was encountered. Herein we describe an accidental anterior tibial artery pseudoaneurysm as a rare technical complication after this corrective osteotomy. Case presentation A 55-year-old male visited our emergency room, presenting a painful swelling over his right anterolateral shin along with surrounding ecchymosis. Thirteen days ago, he just underwent a corrective fibular osteotomy over his right painful varus knee at our institute, and was discharged after an uneventful postoperative stay. Urgent angiography revealed an out-pouching vascular lesion, pseudoaneurysm, involving his right anterior tibial artery. Prompt endovascular repair with stent insertion and balloon compression successfully stopped the persistent extravasation from the injured artery. Follow-up angiography as well as outpatient review confirmed the regression of this lesion and associated symptoms without sequelae. Conclusion Although corrective fibular osteotomy is a simple surgical procedure, it is not free of complications. The suggested osteotomized level in the pertinent literature predisposes patients to certain neuromuscular deficits, which could be avoided by the modified level of osteotomy. However, our case highlights surgeons’ familiarity with certain risky neurovascular structures around the osteotomy site and corresponding technical considerations. A recent surgical history along with alarming symptoms/signs should arouse clinical suspicion, aid in timely identification and make appropriate interventions for potential vascular complications.

Introduction: The cheating by using cognitive enhancer drugs (nootropics) in Esports competitions has become increasingly crucial due to the exponential rise in Esports investments and the substantial prizes awarded to winners. Looking at the increase in reaction time due to a loss of focus after extended periods of playing video games, the financial incentives and other factors such as the desire to achieve high performance, fame, and uncoordinated anti-doping measures among Esports organizations have led some players to attempt to use prohibited substances to outperform their opponents. To study this subject, we collected and categorized information into two main area: a review of nootropics and their pharmacological activities, and an analysis of the methods used to detect nootropics, particularly focusing on liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Methods: We conducted a literature review and content analysis on both quantitative and qualitative surveys of articles across five platforms, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Science Open, Semantic Scholar, and DOAJ, and through manual searches for articles related to doping in Esports, pharmacological effects of nootropics, and the use of LC/MS/MS in the detection of nootropics. Combined and scrutinized, out of 385 studies initially identified, 52 met our criteria for inclusion. Results: Based on our findings, anti-doping efforts in Esports encounter challenges due to fragmentation among various federations, each organizing its own Esports leagues and vying for dominance, in contrast to traditional sports, which typically have centralized governance. Furthermore, our findings indicate that besides the list of nootropics prohibited in Esports competitions by various federations, there are additional nootropics that could potentially enhance cognitive performance in Esports players yet remain unregulated. Most reviewed studies employed high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry to detect and quantify specific nootropics and their metabolites. Various sample purification techniques, such as solid-phase extraction, were utilized to reduce matrix interference. It is generally known that the presence of predominant components co-eluting in the column may interfere with the signal of the analyte of interest, leading to either suppression or enhancement of the desired ion signals. Conclusion: The misuse of nootropics not only violates the integrity of Esports competition but also poses significant risks to players' health, potentially leading to adverse effects and, in some cases, fatality. To protect players' health and ensure fairness in Esports competitions, anti-doping authorities should consider expanding their anti-doping scope to include the additional nootropics proposed in our study. Abstract Particulate lead (Pb) is a primary air pollutant that affects society because of its health impacts. This study investigates the source sectors of Pb associated with ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) over central-western Taiwan (CWT) with new constraints on the Pb-isotopic composition. We demonstrate that the contribution of coal-fired facilities is overwhelming, which is estimated to reach 35 ± 16% in the summertime and is enhanced to 57 ± 24% during the winter monsoon seasons. Moreover, fossil-fuel vehicles remain a major source of atmospheric Pb, which accounts for 12 ± 5%, despite the current absence of a leaded gasoline supply. Significant seasonal and geographical variations in the Pb-isotopic composition are revealed, which suggest that the impact of East Asian (EA) pollution outflows is important in north CWT and drastically declines toward the south. We estimate the average contribution of EA outflows as accounting for 35 ± 15% (3.6 ± 1.5 ng/m3) of the atmospheric Pb loading in CWT during the winter monsoon seasons.

Taiwan establishes Ocean Affairs Council (OAC) in 2018. Ocean governance has reached a new milestone. In 2019, the Ocean Basic Act was enacted. In 2020, the National Ocean Policy White Paper was published, meaning that Taiwan has specialized ocean authorities, regulations, enforcement units, and relevant mechanisms and policies. The Ocean Conservation Administration (OCA) is also responsible for marine environmental protection and conservation. To ensure good ocean governance, maintain marine resources, and protect the environment, the OCA has recently drafted the Marine Conservation Act for sustainable development. This article mainly reviews, analyzes, and compares Taiwan’s current marine-related laws and regulations and refers to the laws, policies, and mechanisms of other countries to provide suggestions on marine governance and the ongoing draft of the Marine Conservation Act.

Paul’s freedom in Galatians is the initiation of redemption acted by God’s grace through his only Son, Jesus Christ, to set human beings free. Christian freedom is said to be the process of being freed from slavery to freedom; however, this article is giving a different insight into freedom in Galatians, that is, the progress of Christian freedom is not from slavery to freedom, but slavery to slavery. The main point is whom one belongs to: either sin and flesh, or Jesus Christ. Therefore, a full understanding of the meaning of freedom in Galatians has to take the imagery of slavery and adoption into consideration in order to be fully comprehensive. Contribution: This article deals with basic Christian attitudes towards faith, especially regarding the identity of being a Christian and how to live out the characteristics of a Christian life by recognising the true freedom in Christ.

The mitogenome of the Greytail angelfish Chaetodontoplus poliourus (Pomacanthidae) was decoded using next-generation sequencing techniques. The de novo assembled mitogenome consists of 16,961 bp, including 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNAs and 22 transfer RNA genes. The gene arrangement is identical to the other available Pomacanthidae mitogenomes submitted to NCBI. The overall base composition of the C. poliourus mitogenome was estimated to be 28.0% A, 30.9% C, 15.8% G and 25.3% T. The phylogenetic analysis of the C. poliourus mitogenome suggests a closer genetic relationship with Vermiculated angelfish Chaetodontoplus mesoleucus as expected from their similar color patterns. The overall pairwise identity except D-loop is 93.7% for these two sister species. The decoding of the C. poliourus mitogenome has enriched gene database for further evolutionary studies and conservation assessments of this uncommon and newly described marine angelfish.

Histones, proteins that bind DNA, are toxic for pathogens outside cells but can also cause multi-organ damage as seen in sepsis. Here the authors develop small negatively charged molecules that can be used as histone antidotes, and show that they improve the phenotype in mouse models with histone-related pathologies.

Abstract Background Two parallel cannulated screws along with an anterior wire to construct a tension band is a popular approach in transverse patellar fractures. However, the optimal screw proximity, either deep or superficial screw placements, remains controversial. Hence, a new concept of the addition of a third screw to form a triangular configuration along with the original two parallel screws was proposed in this study. Therefore, the biomechanical effect of the additional third screw on the stability of the fractured patella was investigated with finite element (FE) simulation. Methods An FE knee model including the distal femur, proximal tibia, and fractured patella (type AT/OTA 34-C) was developed in this study. Four different screw configurations, including two parallel cannulated screws with superficial (5-mm proximity) and deep (10-mm proximity) placements and two parallel superficial screws plus a third deep screw, and two parallel deep screws plus a third superficial screw, with or without the anterior wire, were considered for the simulation. Results Results indicated that the addition of a third screw increased stability by reducing the dorsal gap opening when two parallel screws were deeply placed, particularly on the fractured patella without an anterior wire. However, the third screw was of little value when two parallel screws were superficially placed. In the existence of two deep parallel screws and the anterior wire, the third screw reduced the gap opening by 23.5% (from 1.15 mm to 0.88 mm) and 53.6% (from 1.21 mm to 0.61 mm) in knee flexion 45° and full extension, respectively. Furthermore, in the absence of the anterior wire, the third screw reduced the gap opening by 73.5% (from 2 mm to 0.53 mm) and 72.2% (from 1.33 mm to 0.37 mm) in knee flexion 45° and full extension, respectively. Conclusion Based on the results, a third cannulated screw superficially placed (5-mm proximity) is recommended to increase stability and maintain contact of the fractured patella, fixed with two parallel cannulated screws deeply placed (10-mm proximity), particularly when an anterior wire was not used. Furthermore, the third screw deeply placed is not recommended in a fractured patella with two parallel superficial screws.

Abstract Background Lateral hinge fracture (LHF) is associated with nonunion and plate breakage in high tibial osteotomy (HTO). Mechanical studies investigating fixation strategies for LHFs to restore stability and avoid plate breakage are absent. This study used computer simulation to compare mechanical stabilities in HTO for different LHFs fixed with medial and bilateral locking plates. Methods A finite element knee model was created with HTO and three types of LHF, namely T1, T2, and T3 fractures, based on the Takeuchi classification. Either medial plating or bilateral plating was used to fix the HTO with LHFs. Furthermore, the significance of the locking screw at the combi hole (D-hole) of the medial TomoFix plate was evaluated. Results The osteotomy gap shortening distance increased from 0.53 to 0.76, 0.79, and 0.72 mm after T1, T2, and T3 LHFs, respectively, with medial plating only. Bilateral plating could efficiently restore stability and maintain the osteotomy gap. Furthermore, using the D-hole screw reduced the peak stress on the medial plate by 28.7% (from 495 to 353 MPa), 26.6% (from 470 to 345 MPa), and 32.6% (from 454 to 306 MPa) in T1, T2, and T3 LHFs, respectively. Conclusion Bilateral plating is a recommended strategy to restore HTO stability in LHFs. Furthermore, using a D-hole locking screw is strongly recommended to reduce the stress on the medial plate for lowering plate breakage risk.

Resonant structures are a promising method to enhance the nonlinear response of Si, however they are typically larger than 10 μm. Here, the authors present Si nano-resonators that amplify photothermal nonlinearity, resulting in reversible and repeatable modulation.

Purpose: While intensity modulated proton therapy can deliver simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) to the dominant intraprostatic lesion (DIL) with high precision, it is sensitive to anatomic changes. We investigated the dosimetric effects from these changes based on pretreatment cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) images and identified the most important factors using a multilayer perceptron neural network (MLPNN). Methods and Materials: DILs were contoured based on coregistered multiparametric magnetic resonance images for 25 previously treated prostate cancer patients. SIB plans were created with (1) prostate clinical target volume − V70 Gy = 98%; (2) DIL − V98 Gy > 95%; and (3) all organs at risk within clinical constraints. SIB plans were applied to daily CBCT-based deformed planning computed tomography (CT). DIL − V98 Gy, bladder/rectum maximum dose (Dmax) and volume changes, femur shifts, and the distance from DIL to organs at risk in both planning computed tomograms and CBCT were calculated. Wilcoxon signed-ranks tests were used to compare the changes. MLPNNs were used to model the change in ΔDIL − V98 Gy > 10% and bladder/rectum Dmax > 80 Gy, and the relative importance factors for the model were provided. The performances of the models were evaluated with receiver operating characteristic curves. Results: Comparing initial plan to the average from evaluation plans, respectively, DIL − V98 Gy was 89.3% ± 19.9% versus 86.2% ± 21.3% (P = .151); bladder Dmax 71.9 ± 0.6 Gy versus 74.5 ± 2.9 Gy (P < .001); and rectum Dmax 70.1 ± 2.4 Gy versus 74.9 ± 9.1Gy (P = .007). Bladder and rectal volumes were 99.6% ± 39.5% and 112.8% ± 27.2%, respectively, of their initial volume. The femur shift was 3.16 ± 2.52 mm. In the modeling of ΔDIL V98 Gy > 10%, DIL to rectum distance changes, DIL to bladder distance changes, and rectum volume changes ratio are the 3 most important factors. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves were 0.89, 1.00, and 0.99 for the modeling of ΔDIL − V98 Gy > 10%, and bladder and rectum Dmax > 80 Gy, respectively. Conclusions: Dosimetric changes in DIL SIB with intensity modulated proton therapy can be modeled and classified based on anatomic changes on pretreatment images by an MLPNN.

Introduction: Due to the enhanced awareness of consumers concerning healthy foods, homemade expeller-pressed oils have become popular worldwide. However, an extended storage period may lead to oxidization of the oil and exposure to hazardous byproducts by consumers.Methods: In this study, 10 pressed oil samples prepared from common oilseeds using a small-scale expeller oil press were analyzed by OXITEST with a sample amount of 5 g of oil and an oxygen pressure of 800 kPa under accelerated conditions for shelf-life projections. The oil properties were investigated, including the recovery, smoke point, acid value, iodine value, “fatty acid composition, and contents of pigments and tocopherols”.Results: The autoxidation reaction of various expeller-pressed oils under an accelerated testing system followed zero-order Arrhenius kinetics (R2 > 0.99). Shelf-lives of the pressed oils at 25°C were estimated by extrapolation to range 105~1,089 days. The obtained shelf-lives were significantly correlated with log induction period (IP) values (r > 0.81, p < 0.05) and unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) (r < −0.69, p < 0.05), but not with the iodine value, acid value, or smoke point. Scatter diagrams between shelf-lives and UFAs suggested that these pressed oils could be grouped by two linear regression curves (r > 0.98, p < 0.05). The predictive equations using multiple linear regression are presented herein, with predictor variables of UFAs and an unspecified item involving potential influencing factors such as tocopherol contents (r > 0.88, p < 0.05).Conclusions: Our findings first revealed that the UFA portion was partially correlated with the shelf-lives of selected expeller-pressed seed oils as estimated by the OXITEST. The derived equations can be applied for shelf-life predictions of expeller-pressed oils stored under dark ambient conditions based on the fatty acid profile.

Context Danggui Buxue Tang (DBT), one of the popular Danggui (DG) decoctions, has traditionally been used to nourish ‘qi’ (vital energy) and enrich ‘blood’ (body circulation). DBT may possess performance-enhancing effects. Objective This work determines whether DBT can improve physical capacity and alter energy expenditure under exercise training. Materials and methods Forty male Wistar rats were assigned to four groups: sedentary (SE), exercise training (ET), ET supplemented with 0.3 g/kg rat/d DG extract, and ET supplemented with 1.8 g/kg rat/d DBT extract. The supplementations were administered via oral gavage. During the 21-day treatment period, the exercised groups were subjected to a protocol of swimming training with a gradually increased load. Physical performance evaluation was assessed using the forelimb grip strength test and an exhaustive swimming test. Muscle glycogen contents and exercise-related biochemical parameters were analysed. Results Both herbal supplementations remarkably increased the grip strength (DG by 49.7% and DBT by 85.7%) and prolonged the swimming time (DG by 48.4% and DBT by 72.7%) compared with SE. DBT spared a certain amount of glycogen in the muscle cells under exercise training. Regarding the regulation of fuel usage, DBT had a positive impact alongside ET on promoting aerobic glycolysis via significantly decreasing serum lactate by 31.6% and lactic dehydrogenase levels by 61.8%. Conclusions This study found that DBT could be considered a promising sports ergogenic aid for athletic population or fitness enthusiasts. Future work focussing on isolating the bioactive components that truly provide the ergogenic effects would be of interest.

Background: Sciaenidae is one of the most important coastal fisheries in Taiwan, both in production and economic value. It is also significant as the main targetted diet of Chinese white dolphins, Sousa chinensis, especially for the genus Johnius, such as J. taiwanensis, J. belangerii and J. distinctus, which is primarily found in central-western Taiwan coastal waters. Despite an abundance of Johnius species occurrences reported in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and the Taiwan Biodiversity Information Facility (TaiBIF) data portals (Mozambique, Australia, Taiwan, Korea, India, Indonesia, South Africa, Pakistan, Vietnam and China), there are no specific datasets that properly document the regional distribution of this genus, especially in Taiwanese waters. Thus, this paper describes a dataset of genus Johnius occurrences in waters on the central-western coast of Taiwan. The data collection for the present study was conducted from 2009 until 2020 and comprised 62 sampling events and 133 occurrence records. All fish specimens were collected by trawling in Miaoli, Changhwa and Yunlin Counties, Taiwan and brought back to the lab for identification, individual number count and body weight measurement. These processing data have been integrated and established in the Taiwan Fish Database and published in GBIF. This dataset contains six Johnius species and 2,566 specimens, making it comprehensive Johnius fish fauna and spatial distributional data on the coastal habitat in central-western Taiwanese waters. New information: This dataset contains 133 occurrence records of Johnius species (Sciaenidae) with 2,566 specimens, making it the most extensive public dataset of Johnius distribution records in Taiwan. The publication of this dataset through the TaiBIF and GBIF dataset platforms demonstrated that the number of Johnius spatial and temporal records in Taiwan waters is influenced by the topographical structure of the Changyun Rise (CYR) in combination with the cold current of the China Coastal currents and bound with the warm currents of the Kuroshio and the South China Sea on the central-western coast of Taiwan. The data serve as the foundation for understanding the biogeography and Johnius species ecology in Taiwan's coastal waters, which present a 2°C water temperature difference split at the CYR. Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes of clavicular hook plate fixation with and without coracoclavicular (CC) tape augmentation for the treatment of acute unstable AC dislocation. Methods: We treated 47 patients (31 men and 16 women; mean age: 47 years (range, 21–81)) with unstable acute AC dislocations (Rockwood III–V) and divided them into two groups according to the treatment modality, with hook plate fixation (hook plate group) or hook plate plus CC tape augmentation (combined group). We assessed radiologic findings, such as subacromial osteolysis and AC osteoarthritis. We also evaluated the clinical outcomes using a visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain, as well as the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Shoulder Rating Scale and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) Shoulder Score. Results: We found that the combined group had less subacromial osteolysis upon radiography, although the CC distance was similar in both groups (119 ± 29.7% of contralateral side CC distance in hook plate group versus 119 ± 34.8% in the combined group, p = 0.77). Abstract Background Cannulated screws with an anterior wire are currently used for managing transverse patellar fracture. However, the addition of anterior wiring with various types of screws via open surgery to increase the mechanical stability is yet to be determined. Hence, this study aimed to compare the mechanical behaviors of a fractured patella fixed with various screws types and at various screw locations with and without the anterior wire. The present study hypothesized that using the anterior wire reduces the fracture gap formation. Methods A finite element (FE) model containing a fractured patella fixed with various types of cannulated screws and anterior wiring was created in this study. Three types of screws, namely partial thread, full thread, and headless compression screws, and two screw depths, namely 5 and 10 mm away from the anterior surface of the patella, were included. The effect of the anterior wire was clarified by comparing the results of surgical fixation with and without the wire. Two magnitudes and two loading directions were used to simulate and examine the mechanical responses of the fractured patella with various fixation conditions during knee flexion/extension. Results Compared with partial thread and headless compression screws, the full thread screw increased the stability of the fractured patella by reducing fragment displacement, fracture gap formation, and contact pressure while increasing the contact area at the fracture site. Under 400-N in the direction 45°, the full thread screw with 5-mm placement reduced the gap formation by 86.7% (from 2.71 to 0.36 mm) and 55.6% (from 0. 81 to 0. 36 mm) compared with the partial thread screw with 10-mm placement, respectively without and with the anterior wire. Conclusion The anterior wire along with the full thread screw is preferentially recommended for maintaining the surgical fixation of the fractured patella. Without the use of anterior wiring, the full thread screw with 5-mm placement may be considered as a less invasive alternative; however, simple screw fixation at a deeper placement (10 mm) is least recommended for the fixation of transverse patellar fracture.

We present commissioning and validation of Fred, a graphical processing unit (GPU)–accelerated Monte Carlo code, for two proton beam therapy facilities of different beam line design: CCB (Krakow, IBA) and EMORY (Atlanta, Varian). We followed clinical acceptance tests required to approve the certified treatment planning system for clinical use. We implemented an automated and efficient procedure to build a parameter library characterizing the clinical proton pencil beam. Beam energy, energy spread, lateral propagation model, and a dosimetric calibration factor were parametrized based on measurements performed during the facility start-up. The Fred beam model was validated against commissioning and supplementary measurements performed with and without range shifter. We obtained 1) submillimeter agreement of Bragg peak shapes in water and lateral beam profiles in air and slab phantoms, 2) 95% for >1000 patient verification measurements using a two-dimensional array of ionization chambers, and 4) gamma index passing rate of >99% for three-dimensional dose distributions computed with Fred and measured with an array of ionization chambers behind an anthropomorphic phantom. The results of example treatment planning study on >100 patients demonstrated that Fred simulations in computed tomography enable an accurate prediction of dose distribution in patient and application of Fred as second patient quality assurance tool. Computation of a patient treatment in a CT using 104 protons per pencil beam took on average 2′30 min with a tracking rate of 2.9×105p+/s. Fred was successfully commissioned and validated against the clinical beam model, showing that it could potentially be used in clinical routine. Thanks to high computational performance due to GPU acceleration and an automated beam model implementation method, the application of Fred is now possible for research or quality assurance purposes in most of the proton facilities.

This study analyzed the piscivorous diet of bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) through species identification of both fish and otolith remains in stomachs of 183 bigeye tuna collected in the western Indian Ocean. A total of 642 fish remains and 1,021 fish otoliths were examined. Prey items identified in the fish and otolith remains were not completely consistent. Although 12 items out of the 53 identified taxa were found in both remains, 20 items of fish remains were not found in otolith remains, and 21 items were added only from the otoliths. The main fish remains were Alepisauridae, which accounted for 13.9%. Most of the otoliths belonged to Myctophidae (49.5%) and Scopelarchidae (21.4%). Three prey items, namely Valenciennellus tripunctulatus, Evermannella sp., and Zenion sp., were recorded for the first time in the diet of bigeye tuna from the region. The otolith remains substantially enhanced the taxonomic resolution of the diet. Bigeye tuna stomach contents were independent of location, depth, and time of catch but varied with tuna size. The proportion of dominant Myctophidae prey items decreased markedly as the tuna size increased, whereas the proportion of Macrouridae increased with size. In addition, larger bigeye tuna were found feeding on larger prey (Electrona risso and Scopelarchus analis), demonstrating that diet changes in both prey composition and size are related to the ontogeny of the fish.

Abstract Background To maintain the corrected alignment after high tibial osteotomy (HTO), fixation with titanium locking plate and screws is widely used in current practice; however, screw breakage is a common complication. Thus, this study was to investigate the mechanical stability of HTO with locking plate and various screw fixations, including the length as well as the type. Methods A finite element (FE) model involving a distal femur, meniscus, and a proximal tibia with HTO fixed with a titanium locking plate and screws was created. The angle of the medial open wedge was 12°, and bone graft was not used. Two types of screws, namely conventional locking and far-cortical locking screws, with various lengths and configurations were used. At the proximal tibia, conventional locking screws with different lengths, 30 and 55 mm, were used; at the tibia shaft, different screw fixations including one-cortical, two-cortical, and far-cortical locking screws were used. Results The use of far-cortical locking screw generated the highest equivalent stress on the screws, which was four times (from 137.3 to 541 MPa) higher than that of the one-cortical screw. Also, it led to the maximum deformation of the tibia and a greater gap deformation at the osteotomy site, which was twice (from 0.222 to 0.442 mm) larger than that of the one-cortical screw. The effect of different locking screw length on tibia deformation and implant stress was minor. Conclusion Thus, far-cortical locking screws and plates increase interfragmentary movement but the screw stress is relatively high. Increasing the protection time (partial weight duration) is suggested to decrease the risk of screw breakage in HTO through fixation with titanium far-cortical locking screws and plates.
