QMCPACK is an open source quantum Monte Carlo package for ab-initio electronic structure calculations. It supports calculations of metallic and insulating solids, molecules, atoms, and some model Hamiltonians. Implemented real space quantum Monte Carlo algorithms include variational, diffusion, and reptation Monte Carlo. QMCPACK uses Slater-Jastrow type trial wave functions in conjunction with a sophisticated optimizer capable of optimizing tens of thousands of parameters. The orbital space auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo method is also implemented, enabling cross validation between different highly accurate methods. The code is specifically optimized for calculations with large numbers of electrons on the latest high performance computing architectures, including multicore central processing unit (CPU) and graphical processing unit (GPU) systems. We detail the program's capabilities, outline its structure, and give examples of its use in current research calculations. The package is available at http://www.qmcpack.org .

The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases provides a unique opportunity to study the interplay between strong interaction and SOC in a tunable, disorder-free system. We present here precision ab initio numerical results on the two-dimensional, unpolarized, uniform Fermi gas with attractive interactions and Rashba SOC. Using auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo and incorporating recent algorithmic advances, we carry out exact calculations on sufficiently large system sizes to provide accurate results systematically as a function of experimental parameters. We obtain the equation of state, the momentum distributions, the pseudo-spin correlations and the pairing wave functions. Our results help illuminate the rich pairing structure induced by SOC, and provide benchmarks for theory and guidance to future experimental efforts., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Exact calculations are performed on the two-dimensional strongly interacting, unpolarized, uniform Fermi gas with a zero-range attractive interaction. Two auxiliary-field approaches are employed which accelerate the sampling of imaginary-time paths using BCS trial wave functions and a force bias technique. Their combination enables calculations on large enough lattices to reliably compute ground-state properties in the thermodynamic limit. A new equation of state is obtained, with a parametrization provided, which can serve as a benchmark and allow accurate comparisons with experiments. The pressure, contact parameter, and condensate fraction are determined systematically vs.~$k_F a$. The momentum distribution, pairing correlation, and the structure of the pair wave function are computed. The use of force bias to accelerate the Metropolis sampling of auxiliary-fields in determinantal approaches is discussed., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We investigate different ground-state phases of attractive spin-imbalanced populations of fermions in 3-dimensional optical lattices. Detailed numerical calculations are performed using Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory to determine the ground-state properties systematically for different values of density, spin polarization and interaction strength. We first consider the high density and low polarization regime, in which the effect of the optical lattice is most evident. We then proceed to the low density and high polarization regime where the effects of the underlying lattice are less significant and the system begins to resemble a continuum Fermi gas. We explore the effects of density, polarization and interaction on the character of the phases in each regime and highlight the qualitative differences between the two regimes. In the high-density regime, the order is found to be of Larkin-Ovchinnikov type, linearly oriented with one characteristic wave vector but varying in its direction with the parameters. At lower densities the order parameter develops more structures involving multiple wave vectors.

Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) is used to study the effect of non-zero hopping t_f in the localized f-band of the periodic Anderson model (PAM) in two dimensions. The low temperature properties are determined in the plane of interband hybridization V and t_f at fixed U_f and half-filling, including the case when the sign of t_f is opposite to that of the conduction band t_d. For t_f and t_d of the same sign, and when t_f=t_d > (V =4_td)^2, the non-interacting system is metallic. We show that a remnant of the band insulator to metal line at U_f = 0 persists in the interacting system, manifesting itself as a maximal tendency toward antiferromagnetic correlations at low temperature. In this optimal t_f region, short range (e.g. near-neighbor) and long-range spin correlations develop at similar temperatures and have comparable magnitude. Both observations are in stark contrast with the situation in the widely studied PAM (t_f = 0) and single band Hubbard model, where short range correlations are stronger and develop at higher temperature. The effect that finite t_f has on Kondo screening is investigated by considering the evolution of the local density of states for selected t_f as a function of V . We determine the relative stability of different ground-state phases of spin-imbalanced popula- tions of attractive fermions in square lattices. The phases are systematically characterized by the symmetry of the order parameter and the real- and momentum-space structures using Hartree- Fock-Bogoliubov theory. We find several type of unidirectional Larkin-Ovchinikov-type phases. We discuss the effect of commensuration between the ordering wave vector and the density imbalance, and describe the mechanism of Fermi surface reconstruction and pairing for various orders. A robust supersolid phase is shown to exist when the ordering wave vector is diagonally directed., Comment: 6.5 pages, 5 figures

Systems of fermions described by the three-dimensional (3D) repulsive Hubbard model on a cubic lattice have recently attracted considerable attention due to their possible experimental realization via cold atoms in an optical lattice. Because analytical and numerical results are limited away from half-filling, we study the ground state of the doped system from weak to intermediate interaction strengths within the generalized Hartree-Fock approximation. The exact solution to the self-consistent-field equations in the thermodynamic limit is obtained and the ground state is shown to exhibit antiferromagnetic order and incommensurate spin-density waves (SDW). At low interaction strengths, the SDW has unidirectional character with a leading wave-vector along the $<100>$-direction, and the system is metallic. As the interaction increases, the system undergoes a simultaneous structural and metal-to-insulator transition to a unidirectional SDW state along the $<111>$-direction, with a different wavelength. We systematically determine the real- and momentum-space properties of these states. The crossover from 3D to two-dimensions (2D) is then studied by varying the inter-plane hopping amplitude, which can be experimentally realized by tuning the distance between a stack of square-lattice layers. Detailed comparisons are made between the exact numerical results and predictions from the pairing model, a variational {\em ansatz} based on the pairing of spins in the vicinity of the Fermi surface. Most of the numerical results can be understood quantitatively from the ansatz, which provides a simple picture for the nature of the SDW states., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures

The effect of on-site electron-electron repulsion $U$ in a band insulator is explored for a bilayer Hubbard Hamiltonian with opposite sign hopping in the two sheets. The ground state phase diagram is determined at half-filling in the plane of $U$ and the interplanar hybridization $V$ through a computation of the antiferromagnetic (AF) structure factor, local moments, single particle and spin wave spectra, and spin correlations. Unlike the case of the ionic Hubbard model, no evidence is found for a metallic phase intervening between the Mott and band insulators. Instead, upon increase of $U$ at large $V$, the behavior of the local moments and of single-particle spectra give quantitative evidence of a crossover to a Mott insulator state preceding the onset of magnetic order. Our conclusions generalize those of single-site dynamical mean field theory, and show that including interlayer correlations results in an increase of the single particle gap with $U$., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Fermionic atoms in a periodic optical lattice provide a realization of the single-band Hubbard model. Using Quantum Monte Carlo simulations along with the Maximum Entropy Method, we evaluate the effect of a time-dependent perturbative modulation of the optical lattice amplitude on atomic correlations, revealed in the fraction of doubly-occupied sites. Our treatment extends previous approaches which neglected the time dependence of the on-site interaction, and shows that this term changes the results in a quantitatively significant way. The effect of modulation depends strongly on the filling-- the response of the double occupation is significantly different in the half-filled Mott insulator from the doped Fermi liquid region., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The emergence of local phases in a trapped two-component Fermi gas in an optical lattice is studied using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We treat temperatures that are comparable or lower than those presently achievable in experiments and large enough systems that both magnetic and paired phases can be detected by inspection of the behavior of suitable short-range correlations. We use the latter to suggest the interaction strength and temperature range at which experimental observation of incipient magnetism and d-wave pairing are more likely and evaluate the relation between entropy and temperature in two-dimensional confined fermionic systems., Comment: 4 pages + supplementary material

The interplay of strong interaction and strong disorder, as contained in the Anderson-Hubbard model, is addressed using two non-perturbative numerical methods: the Lanczos algorithm in the grand canonical ensemble at zero temperature and Quantum Monte Carlo. We find distinctive evidence for a zero-energy anomaly which is robust upon variation of doping, disorder and interaction strength. Its similarities to, and differences from, pseudogap formation in other contexts, including perturbative treatments of interactions and disorder, classical theories of localized charges, and in the clean Hubbard model, are discussed., Comment: 4.2 pages, 4 figures

We discuss the origin of the finite size error of the energy in many-body simulation of systems of charged particles and we propose a correction based on the random phase approximation at long wave lengths. The correction comes from contributions mainly determined by the organized collective oscillations of the interacting system. Finite size corrections, both on kinetic and potential energy, can be calculated within a single simulation. Computation of ionic forces using quantum Monte Carlo methods has long been a challenge. We introduce a simple procedure, based on known properties of physical electronic densities, to make the variance of the Hellmann-Feynman estimator finite. We obtain very accurate geometries for the molecules H$_2$, LiH, CH$_4$, NH$_3$, H$_2$O and HF, with a Slater-Jastrow trial wave function. Harmonic frequencies for diatomics are also in good agreement with experiment. Exploiting an approach similar to the R-matrix theory, the diffusion Monte Carlo method is employed to compute phase shifts and threshold cross sections for the elastic scattering of o-positronium off light atoms. Results are obtained for Ps-H and Ps-He as representative cases of open and closed shell targets. The method allows for an exact treatment of both correlation and exchange interactions, and represents the most promising approach to deal with these effects in more complicated targets. In particular the Ps-He threshold cross section, computed in a many body framework for the first time, represents a standard by which past and future numerical and experimental estimates can be judged., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. An accurate method to compute the annihilation rate in positronic systems by means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations is tested and compared with previously proposed methods using simple model systems. This method can be applied within all the quantum Monte Carlo techniques, just requiring to accumulate the positron-electron distribution function. The annihilation rate of e$^+$LiH as a function of the internuclear distance is studied using a model potential approach to eliminate the core electrons of Li, and explicitly correlated wave functions to deal with all the remaining particles. These results allow us to compute vibrationally averaged annihilation rates, and to understand the effect of the Li$^+$ electric field on positron and electron distributions., Comment: 5 figures.
