Abstract High-Frequency Doppler (HFD) sounders at low-latitudes often detect characteristic oblique spreading Doppler traces in the spectrogram, known as Oblique Spread Structure (OSS). OSS has been expected to be generated by the dispersion of radio wave reflection due to equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs). However, it has not yet been confirmed whether OSS is surely a manifestation of EPB by conducting simultaneous observations of EPB and OSS with different observational techniques. Additionally, it remains unclear what kinds of properties of EPB are reflected in the fine structure of OSS. In this study, we investigated three cases of OSSs and EPBs simultaneously observed by a HFD sounding system and an all-sky airglow imager in Taiwan. For the three cases presented here, the timing of OSS occurrence in the HFD data well coincided with that of the EPB appearance in the airglow data. The frequency shift of OSS is quantitatively explained assuming a radio wave reflection at 250–300 km altitudes. These results strongly indicate that OSS is formed by electron density variations at F-region altitudes accompanying EPB; thus, OSS is a manifestation of EPB in the HFD observations. Furthermore, it was suggested that the fine structure of OSS reflected the branching structure of EPB when the multiple branches of EPB reached the intermediate reflection point of the HFD observation. The detection of EPB occurrence and its fine structure using HFD observation enables monitoring of EPB regardless of weather conditions, which will contribute to monitoring the space weather impact of EPBs, for example, on GNSS navigation, in a wide area. Abstract It has long been known that field-aligned irregularities within equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) can cause long-range propagation of radio waves in the VHF frequencies such as those used for TV broadcasting through the so-called forward scattering process. However, no attempt has been made to use such anomalous propagations of VHF radio waves for wide-area monitoring of EPBs. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of monitoring of EPBs using VHF radio waves used for aeronautical navigation systems such as VHF Omnidirectional radio Range (VOR). There are 370 VOR stations in the Eastern and Southeastern Asian region that can be potentially used as Tx stations for the observations of anomalous propagation. We have examined the forward scattering conditions of VHF waves using the magnetic field model and confirmed that it is possible to observe the EPB-related anomalous propagation if we set up Rx stations in Okinawa (Japan), Taiwan, and Thailand. During test observations conducted in Okinawa since 2021, no signal has been received that was clearly caused by anomalous propagation due to EPBs. This is simply because EPBs have not developed to high latitudes during the observation period due to the low solar activity. In March 2023, however, possible indications of EPB-related scattering were detected in Okinawa which implies the feasibility of observing EPBs with the current observation system. We plan to conduct pilot observations in Taiwan and Thailand in future to further evaluate the feasibility of this monitoring technique. Graphical Abstract

Post-induction hypotension (PIH) is a common and potentially serious complication of general anesthesia. This meta-analysis (Prospero registration number: CRD42024566321) aimed to evaluate the predictive efficacy of the perfusion index (PI) for PIH in patients undergoing general anesthesia. A comprehensive literature search was performed using multiple electronic databases (Google Scholar, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and MEDLINE). Studies involving adult patients undergoing general anesthesia, with the PI measured before anesthesia induction and reporting PIH incidence, were included. The primary outcome was the diagnostic accuracy of the PI in predicting the probability of PIH. The secondary outcome was the pooled PIH incidence. Eight studies with 678 patients were included. The pooled incidence of PIH was 44.8% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 29.9%–60.8%). The combined sensitivity and specificity of the PI for predicting PIH were 0.84 (95% CI: 0.65–0.94) and 0.82 (95% CI: 0.70–0.90), respectively. The summary receiver operating characteristic (sROC) analysis revealed an area under curve of 0.89 (95% CI: 0.86–0.92). The Deek’s funnel plot asymmetry test indicated no significant publication bias. The PI demonstrates high predictive efficacy for PIH in patients undergoing general anesthesia, indicating that it can be a valuable tool for identifying those at risk of PIH.

Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been associated with the development and progression of renal disease. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), a key transcription factor involved in inflammation as well as lipid and glucose metabolism, helps maintain the integrity of tubular epithelial cells. However, the precise role of PPARγ in PM2.5-induced tubular injury remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the regulatory effects of PPARγ on PM2.5-induced ferroptotic stress and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) in tubular (HK-2) cells. We found that downregulation of PPARγ expression was correlated with EMT in PM2.5-exposed cells. Pretreatment with the PPARγ agonist 15d-PGJ2 protected the cells from EMT by reducing ferroptotic stress, whereas that with the PPARγ antagonist GW9662 promoted EMT. Furthermore, pretreatment with ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) significantly prevented PM2.5-induced EMT and downregulation of PPARγ expression. Notably, overexpression of PPARγ blocked PM2.5-induced downregulation of E-cadherin and GPX4 expression and upregulation of α-SMA expression. This study highlights the complex associations of PPARγ with ferroptosis and EMT in PM2.5-exposed tubular cells. Our findings suggest that PPARγ activation confers protection against PM2.5-induced renal injury.

Introduction: Taiwan has several hepatitis C virus (HCV) hyper-endemic areas. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a collaborative HCV care system with an outreach decentralized strategy among the resource-constrained rural/remote areas of Taiwan. Methods: The pilot study was conducted in four high HCV-endemic townships in the rural/remote areas of Taoyuan, Alishan, Zhuoxi and Xiulin. Registered residents who worked or lived in the four areas and were aged 30–75 years were invited to participate in this program. Multidisciplinary HCV care teams provided outreach decentralized services of anti-HCV screening, link-to-diagnosis, and link-to-treatment with direct-acting antiviral agents (DAA). The primary end-point was sustained virological response (SVR). Results: Of 8291 registered residents who were invited as the target population, 7807 (94.2%) subjects received anti-HCV screening, with the average anti-HCV prevalence rate of 14.2% (1108/7807) (range among four areas: 11.8%–16.7%). The rate of link-to-diagnosis was 94.4% (1046/1108) of anti-HCV-positive subjects (range: 90.9%–100%) with an average HCV-viremic rate of 55.1% (576/1046) (range: 50.0%–64.3%). The link-to-treat rate was 94.4% (544/576) in HCV-viremic subjects (range from 92.7% to 97.2%). Overall, 523 (96.1%) patients achieved an SVR (range: 94.7%–97.6%). Eventually, the overall effectiveness was 80.7% (range: 74.6%–93.1%). The presence of hepatocellular carcinoma at baseline was the only factor associated with DAA failure. The DAA regimens were well-tolerated. Conclusion: The outreach decentralized community-based care system with DAA therapy was highly effective and safe in the achievement of HCV micro-elimination in the resource-constrained rural and remote regions, which could help us to tackle the disparity.

Herein, we report a case of bilateral simultaneous central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) secondary to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). A 48-year-old man, with hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and stage 4 chronic kidney disease, diagnosed with COVID-19 1 month ago presented to the ophthalmology department with blurred vision in both eyes for 2 weeks. Ocular examination revealed a classic clinical presentation of CRVO in both eyes. Optical coherence tomography revealed increased central macular thickness with intraretinal and subretinal fluid in both eyes. Laboratory data revealed elevated D-dimer and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. The levels of other hypercoagulability markers were normal. The patient received intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy in both eyes, followed by regular follow-up every month until complete resolution of symptoms and gradual improvement of the retinal vascular appearance. COVID-19 can cause a variety of coagulation abnormalities and thromboembolic complications such as bilateral simultaneous CRVO. Clinicians and patients should be aware of ocular symptoms and presentations that are probably associated with COVID-19.

This study proposes a drone system with visual identification and tracking capabilities to address the issue of limited communication bandwidth for drones. This system can lock onto a target during flight and transmit its simple features to the ground station, thereby reducing communication bandwidth demands. RealFlight is used as the simulation environment to validate the proposed drone algorithm. The core components of the system include DeepSORT and MobileNet lightweight models for target tracking. The designed fuzzy controller enables the system to adjust the drone’s motors, gradually moving the locked target to the center of the frame and maintaining continuous tracking. Additionally, this study introduces channel and spatial reliability tracking (CSRT) switching from multi-object to single-object tracking and multithreading technology to enhance the system’s execution speed. The experimental results demonstrate that the system can accurately adjust the target to the frame’s center within approximately 1.5 s, maintaining precision within ±0.5 degrees. On the Jetson Xavier NX embedded platform, the average frame rate (FPS) for the multi-object tracker was only 1.37, with a standard deviation of 1.05. In contrast, the single-object tracker CSRT exhibited a significant improvement, achieving an average FPS of 9.77 with a standard deviation of 1.86. This study provides an effective solution for visual tracking in drone systems that is efficient and conserves communication bandwidth. The validation of the embedded platform highlighted its practicality and performance.

BackgroundThe potential link between Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) and prognosis in patients with glioma remains uncertain. This meta-analysis was conducted to assess the clinical value of PNI in glioma patients by integrating all available evidence to enhance statistical power.MethodA systematic search of databases including Medline, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library was conducted from inception to January 8, 2023 to retrieve all pertinent peer-reviewed articles. The primary outcome of the study was to examine the association between a high PNI value and overall survival, while secondary outcome included the relationship between a high PNI and progression-free survival.ResultsIn this meta-analysis, we included 13 retrospective studies published from 2016 to 2022, which analyzed a total of 2,712 patients. Across all studies, surgery was the primary treatment modality, with or without chemotherapy and radiotherapy as adjunct therapies. A high PNI was linked to improved overall survival (Hazard Ratio (HR) = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.52 to 0.72, p < 0.00001, I2 = 25%), and this finding remained consistent even after conducting sensitivity analysis. Subgroup analyses based on ethnicity (Asian vs. non-Asian), sample size (200), and source of hazard ratio (univariate vs. multivariate) yielded consistent outcomes. Furthermore, patients with a high PNI had better progression-free survival than those with a low PNI (HR=0.71, 95% CI: 0.58 to 0.88, p=0.001, I2 = 0%).ConclusionOur meta-analysis suggested that a high PNI was associated with better overall survival and progression-free survival in patients with glioma. These findings may have important implications in the treatment of patients with glioma. Additional studies on a larger scale are necessary to investigate if integrating the index into the treatment protocol leads to improved clinical outcomes in individuals with glioma.Systematic review registration[https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/], identifier [CRD42023389951].

Abstract Meridians constitute the theoretical foundation of acupuncture in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and they have been described for 2000 years. Classical TCM advocates for the directionality of meridians. Finding an accurate method to verify this directionality is an important goal of TCM doctors and researchers. In this study, we objectively explored the physical properties of meridians, such as response current from electrical stimulation, to explore their directionality. The Agilent B1500A semiconductor measurement analyzer was utilized to input the alternating current waveforms and detect the response current on the meridians. The results showed that the direction of the meridians influences the intensity of the response current. Therefore, the mechanisms behind the directions of ion transportation and the meridians were investigated using the response time and the intensity of the response current. Thereafter, we propose a model to explain this mechanism. Afterward, a comparison between the direction of the meridian in this experiment and ancient Chinese medicine classics was performed.

Abstract This meta-analysis aimed at investigating the efficacy of high-flow nasal oxygenation (HFNO) against hypoxemia in patients with obesity compared with conventional oxygenation therapy and non-invasive ventilation. Databases were searched from inception to August 2021. Studies involving peri- or post-procedural use of HFNO were included. The primary outcome was risk of hypoxemia, while the secondary outcomes included status of oxygenation and carbon dioxide elimination. Ten randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included. We found that HFNO prolonged the safe apnea time at induction compared to control group [mean difference (MD) = 73.88 s, p = 0.0004; 2 RCTs] with no difference in risk of peri-procedural hypoxemia [relative risk (RR) = 0.91, p = 0.64; 4 RCTs], minimum SpO2 (MD = 0.09%, p = 0.95; 4 RCTs), PaO2 (MD = − 8.13 mmHg, p = 0.86; 3 RCTs), PaCO2 (MD = − 6.71%, p = 0.2; 2 RCTs), EtCO2 (MD = − 0.28 mmHg, p = 0.8; 4 RCTs) between the two groups. HFNO also did not improve postprocedural PaO2/FiO2 ratio (MD = 41.76, p = 0.58; 2 RCTs) and PaCO2 (MD = − 2.68 mmHg, p = 0.07; 2 RCTs). This meta-analysis demonstrated that the use of HFNO may be associated with a longer safe apnea time without beneficial impact on the risk of hypoxemia, oxygenation, and CO2 elimination in patients with obesity. The limited number of trials warranted further large-scale studies to support our findings.

BackgroundThis meta-analysis aimed at assessing the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound-measured laryngeal air column width difference (ACWD) in predicting post-extubation stridor (PES) in intubated adult patients.MethodsWe searched the Medline, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Google scholar databases from inception to October, 2022 to identify studies that examined the diagnostic accuracy of ACWD for PES. The primary outcome was the diagnostic performance by calculating the pooled sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC). The secondary outcomes were the differences in ACWD and duration of intubation between patients with and without PES.ResultsFollowing literature search, 11 prospective studies (intensive care setting, n = 10; operating room setting, n = 1) involving 1,322 extubations were included. The incidence of PES among the studies was 4–25%. All studies were mixed-gender (females: 24.1–68.5%) with sample sizes ranging between 41 and 432. The cut-off values of ACWD for prediction of PES varied from 0.45 to 1.6 mm. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of ACWD for PES were 0.8 (95% CI = 0.69–0.88, I2: 37.26%, eight studies) and 0.81 (95% CI = 0.72–0.88, I2: 89.51%, eight studies), respectively. The pooled AUC was 0.87 (95% CI = 0.84–0.90). Patients with PES had a smaller ACWD compared to those without PES (mean difference = −0.54, 95% CI = −0.79 to −0.28, I2: 97%, eight studies). Moreover, patients with PES had a longer duration of tracheal intubation than that in those without (mean difference = 2.75 days, 95% CI = 0.92, 4.57, I2: 90%, seven studies).ConclusionUltrasound-measured laryngeal ACWD showed satisfactory sensitivity and specificity for predicting PES. The use of ultrasonography to predict spinal-induced hypotension (SIH) has gained significant attention. This diagnostic meta-analysis aimed to investigate the reliability of the inferior vena cava collapsibility index (IVCCI) in predicting SIH in patients undergoing various surgeries. Databases, including Embase, Cochrane Library, Medline, and Google Scholar, were screened until 28 July 2023, yielding 12 studies with 1076 patients (age range: 25.6–79 years) undergoing cesarean section (CS) (n = 4) or non-CS surgeries (n = 8). Patients with SIH had a significantly higher IVCCI than those without SIH (mean difference: 11.12%, 95% confidence interval (CI): 7.83–14.41). The pooled incidence rate of SIH was 40.5%. IVCCI demonstrated satisfactory overall diagnostic reliability (sensitivity, 77%; specificity, 82%). The pooled area under the curve (AUC) was 0.85, indicating its high capability to differentiate patients at risk of PSH. The Fagan nomogram plot demonstrated a positive likelihood ratio (PLR) of 4 and a negative likelihood ratio (NLR) of 0.28. The results underscore the robustness and discriminative ability of IVCCI as a predictive tool for SIH. Nevertheless, future investigations should focus on assessing its applicability to high-risk patients and exploring the potential enhancement in patient safety through its incorporation into clinical practice.

Abstract An inertia identification approach has been proposed for diesel generators by using the modified load rejection procedures. Large frequency deviation problems often occur in the Kinmen island power system where many diesel generators are used. In order to avoid erroneous evaluation of frequency deviation caused by generator tripping, one of the critical issues in system planning is to accurately estimate the maximum frequency deviation during system outage events. The main factors that influence the frequency deviation include the generator inertia (H), damping constant (D), and governor controller parameters. In order to improve the accuracy of the transient stability analysis to obtain more actual frequency deviation, it is critical to have more accurate inertia values of these diesel generators. This paper proposes a useful approach to evaluate reasonable inertia values. With the identified inertia values of diesel generators, the frequency responses of the Kinmen power system obtained from PSS/E simulation are more consistent with the field measurement results.

The Rearfoot Angle (RFA) is the most common method used for foot posture assessment, and it is also a method for evaluating the subtalar joint neutral foot posture. However, orthopedists and researchers often meet trouble for the measurements of the RFA and neutral foot posture due to lacking measurement with automation and objectivity. In general, the RFA was measured using a goniometer to align with manual markers on foot. The purpose of this study implements the automatic computing of leg angle, foot angle, and RFA by the foot model using Three-Dimensional (3D) scanning. This study aims to implement the automatic and objective computing of leg angle, foot angle, and RFA by the foot model using 3D scanning. The automatic calculation on leg angle, foot angle, and neutral foot posture has been created, tested, and validated completely in this study. Two algorithm methods are proposed to determine the midpoint on the leg or foot outline. The midline has been computed by linear regression through five midpoints. The leg and foot angles are calculated by the tibial and calcaneal midlines, respectively. Through the subject standing on eversion foot platforms, the neutral posture of the foot can be computed by the leg and foot angles determined by the 3D model scanned of the foot with various tilt angles. The determinations of the midpoint and midline have been demonstrated algorithm by MATLAB. Based on comparing with the goniometer measured, selecting the midpoint algorithm of the limit points and the lowest point methods to determine the tibial and calcaneal midlines would produce better results. The foot 3D scanning measurement proposed in this study has been tested and validated from the goniometer. This study can determine the leg angle, foot angle, and neutral foot postures for a subject with normal weight status but not suitable for obese weight status. This study can provide guidance for foot posture assessment and personal insoles design in the future.

Abstract This study examines the ionosphere response to gravitational forces of the lunar phase and dynamical disturbances of the stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs). The total electron content (TEC) of global ionosphere maps is employed to examine responses of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) crests to lunar phases and twelve SSW events during 2000–2013. The most prominent feature in the ionosphere is the EIA, characterized by two enhanced TEC crests at low latitudes straddling the magnetic equator, which can be used to observe ionospheric plasma dynamics and structures. Results show that the EIA crest appearance time on new/full moons (first/third quarters) leads (lags) that of the overall 14-year average, which causes a pattern of TEC morning enhancements (suppressions) and afternoon suppressions (enhancements). A statistical analysis shows that SSWs can also significantly cause the early appearance of EIA crests, regardless of the lunar phase. Thus, both lunar phase and SSWs can significantly modulate the appearance time of EIA crest and ionospheric plasma dynamics and structures.

Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA) are used to treat anemia in hemodialysis (HD) patients. We investigated the role of inflammation and accumulation of environmental toxins (perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), such as perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonate) in the erythropoietic response of HD patients who receive a fixed monthly continuous erythropoietin receptor activator (CERA) dosage. Forty-five patients underwent three successive phases of ESA treatment for two months each (phase one: 100 µg CERA once monthly; phase two: 50 µg CERA twice monthly; phase three: 100 µg CERA once monthly). Patient data were collected to determine the association of various factors with erythropoietic response (change in hematocrit). Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to analyze perfluorinated chemicals. Twenty-eight patients exhibited a poor erythropoietic response that was significantly associated with: age > 80 years, initial hematocrit > 36%, glucose > 200 mg/dL, alanine aminotransferase > 21 U/L, c-reactive protein > 1 mg/dL, interleukin−6 > 10 ng/mL, lactate dehydrogenase ≤ 190 U/L, and chloride ≤ 93 mEq/L. There was also a borderline significant association between inflammation and PFCs, although PFCs failed to show any impact on ESA response. Age, glucose, chloride, liver function, and inflammation may be associated with cost-effective fixed CERA dosage administered at an increased frequency.

The utilization of a three dimension (3D) printing for the fabrication of micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) sensors presents various advantages including low cost, customization, simplicity, and speed. This study involved conducting mechanical and electrical analyses on three types of dielectric layer structures using the finite element method. Capacitive force sensors were produced through 3D printing using fused deposition modeling (FDM). The sensitivity and stiffness of the sensors were determined by measuring their capacitance and displacement changes under force using a self-made measurement system. The experimental results indicate that pre-heating the dielectric layer can reduce the hysteresis effects. In terms of more complex structures, stringing phenomena during the printing process can compromise the reliability of the sensor. A suitable dielectric layer structure can be designed based on the measurement range and sensitivity of the sensor. The results of this study demonstrate the potential for additive manufacturing to replace conventional MEMS processes in sensor production. With the advancement of FDM printing technology, it is increasingly feasible to apply 3D printing technology to sensor manufacturing in the future.

Hyperlipidemia is increasing in prevalence and is highly correlated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Lipid-lowering medications prevent CVD but may not be suitable when the side effects are intolerable or hypercholesterolemia is too severe. Double-filtration plasmapheresis (DF) has shown its therapeutic effect on hyperlipidemia, but its side effects are not yet known. We enrolled 45 adults with hyperlipidemia in our study. The sera before and two weeks after DF were evaluated, and we also analyzed perfluorochemicals to see if DF could remove these lipophilic toxins. After DF, all lipid profile components (total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein [HDL], and low-density lipoprotein [LDL]) had significantly decreased. Leukocyte counts increased while platelet levels decreased, which may have been caused by the puncture wound from DF and consumption of platelets during the process. As for uremic toxins and inflammation, levels of C-reactive protein, uric acid, and alanine transaminase (ALT) all decreased, which may be related to the removal of serum perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and improvement of renal function. The total cholesterol/HDL ratio and triglycerides were significantly higher in the diabetes mellitus (DM) group at baseline but did not significantly differ after DF. In conclusion, DF showed potential for improving inflammation and removing serum lipids and PFOS in adults with hyperlipidemia.

Abstract Here, we introduce a low-cost airglow imaging system developed for observing plasma bubble signatures in 630.0-nm airglow emission from the F region of the ionosphere. The system is composed of a small camera, optical filter, and fish-eye lens, and is operated using free software that automatically records video from the camera. A pilot system was deployed in Ishigaki Island in the southern part of Japan (Lat 24.4, Lon 124.4, Mlat 19.6) and was operated for ~ 1.5 years from 2014 to 2016 corresponding to the recent solar maximum period. The pilot observations demonstrated that it was difficult to identify the plasma bubble signature in the raw image captured every 4 s. However, the quality of the image could be improved by reducing the random noise of instrumental origin through an integration of 30 consecutive raw images obtained in 2 min and further by subtracting the 1-h averaged background image. We compared the deviation images to those from a co-existing airglow imager of OMTIs, which is equipped with a back-illuminated cooled CCD camera with a high quantum efficiency of ~ 90%. It was confirmed that the low-cost airglow imager is capable of imaging the spatial structure of plasma bubbles, including their bifurcating traces. The results of these pilot observations in Ishigaki Island will allow us to distribute the low-cost imager in a wide area and construct a network for monitoring plasma bubbles and their space weather impacts on satellite navigation systems.

We evaluated Lactobacillus acidophilus (LA) for adjuvant application in animal vaccines. LA particles (LAPs) are made by treating LA with purification processes and high-pressure homogenization (HPH). We found that LAPs treated with HPH with trehalose and emulsifiers had an average particle size of 179 nm, considerably smaller than LAPs without additives. First, we evaluated the adjuvanticity of LAPs using a murine model with ovalbumin antigens, revealing that LAPs, especially in a five-fold concentration, could induce a considerable antibody response compared with other current adjuvants. In poultry vaccination tests using inactivated Newcastle disease virus, LAPs alone could induce a similar antibody response compared to commercial water-in-oil (W/O) adjuvant ISA70, a commercial adjuvant, at weeks 4 and 6; however, they declined faster than ISA70 at weeks 8 and 10. LAPs added to conventional adjuvant materials, such as mineral oil-based O/W emulsions, showed similar adjuvanticity to ISA70. LA-H5-C, composed of carbomer, emulsifiers and trehalose showed no significant body weight change in acute toxicity compared to other adjuvants including ISA70, making formulated LAPs a potential candidate for use as a veterinary vaccine adjuvant.

Albumin–bilirubin (ALBI) grade is an objective and reproducible model for evaluating overall survival (OS) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the original ALBI grade was established for patients with Child–Pugh classes A–C. HCC patients with Child–Pugh class C or poor performance status (Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage D) usually receive hospice care. Thus, optimized cutoffs for the ALBI grade for stratifying OS in HCC patients receiving anticancer therapy are pertinent for accurate prognostication. This study retrospectively enrolled 2116 patients with BCLC stages A–C HCC after the exclusion of those ineligible for receiving anticancer therapy. The modified ALBI (mALBI) grades were: an ALBI score ≤−3.02 for mALBI grade 1, an ALBI score >−3.02 to ≤−2.08 for mALBI grade 2, and an ALBI score >−2.08 for mALBI grade 3. The original ALBI and mALBI grades were independent predictors of OS in all the enrolled patients and those receiving transarterial chemoembolization. In patients receiving curative therapy (radiofrequency ablation and surgical resection), the mALBI grade (grade 2 vs. 1 and grade 3 vs. 2) was an independent predictor of OS. Original ALBI grade 2 vs. 1 was an independent predictor of OS but not ALBI grade 3 vs. 2. The mALBI model can differentiate between patients with early, intermediate, or advanced HCC who received anticancer therapy into three prognostic groups. External validation of the proposed mALBI grade is warranted.

Arterial spin labeling (ASL) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to perform perfusion imaging without administration of contrast media. However, the reliability of ASL for musculoskeletal tumors and the influence of post-labeling delay (PLD) have not been fully clarified. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of ASL with different PLDs in the imaging of musculoskeletal tumors. Forty-five patients were enrolled and were divided into a malignant group, a hypervascular benign group, a hypovascular benign group and a control group. The tissue blood flow (TBF) of the lesions and normal muscles was measured and the lesion-to-muscle TBF ratio and differences were calculated. The results showed that both the TBF of lesions and muscles increased as the PLD increased, and the TBF of muscles correlated significantly and positively with the TBF of lesions (all p < 0.05). The TBF and lesion-to-muscle TBF differences of the malignant lesions were significantly higher than those of the hypovascular benign lesions and the control group in all PLD groups (all p < 0.0125) and only those of the hypervascular benign lesions in the longest PLD (3025 ms) group (p = 0.0120, 0.0116). In conclusion, ASL detects high TBF in malignant tumors and hypervascular benign lesions, and a longer PLD is recommended for ASL to differentiate musculoskeletal tumors.

Oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD) can produce hypoxia-induced neurotoxicity and is a mature in vitro model of hypoxic cell damage. Activated AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) regulates a downstream pathway that substantially increases bioenergy production, which may be a key player in physiological energy and has also been shown to play a role in regulating neuroprotective processes. Resveratrol is an effective activator of AMPK, indicating that it may have therapeutic potential as a neuroprotective agent. However, the mechanism by which resveratrol achieves these beneficial effects in SH-SY5Y cells exposed to OGD-induced inflammation and oxidative stress in a 3D gelatin scaffold remains unclear. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the effect of resveratrol in 3D gelatin scaffold cells to understand its neuroprotective effects on NF-κB signaling, NLRP3 inflammasome, and oxidative stress under OGD conditions. Here, we show that resveratrol improves the expression levels of cell viability, inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-18), NF-κB signaling, and NLRP3 inflammasome, that OGD increases. In addition, resveratrol rescued oxidative stress, nuclear factor-erythroid 2 related factor 2 (Nrf2), and Nrf2 downstream antioxidant target genes (e.g., SOD, Gpx GSH, catalase, and HO-1). Treatment with resveratrol can significantly normalize OGD-induced changes in SH-SY5Y cell inflammation, oxidative stress, and oxidative defense gene expression; however, these resveratrol protective effects are affected by AMPK antagonists (Compounds C) blocking. These findings improve our understanding of the mechanism of the AMPK-dependent protective effect of resveratrol under 3D OGD-induced inflammation and oxidative stress-mediated cerebral ischemic stroke conditions.

Serum creatinine is an important clinical marker for renal clearance. However, two conventional methods (Jaffe and enzymatic) are prone to interferences with organic compounds as compared to the standard method (isotope dilution–liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry) and can cause a significant negative bias. Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are two common perfluorochemicals (PFCs) that can easily be accumulated in humans. We aimed to verify whether this bias is the result of an accumulation of PFCs. The serum creatinine values of 124 hemodialysis patients were analyzed using the three methods. We also aimed to evaluate which biochemical parameters will influence the difference between the conventional methods and the standard method. We found that a significant underestimation occurred when using the conventional methods. Albumin is an independent factor associated with negative bias, but it loses this correlation after dialysis, likely due to the removal of protein-bound uremic toxins. PFOS can cause negative bias when using the enzymatic method. Furthermore, this linear correlation is more significant in patients who used polysulfone-based dialysis membranes, possibly due to the better clearance of other uremic toxins. The serum creatinine of uremic patients can be significantly underestimated when using conventional methods. PFCs, as well the type of dialysis membrane being used, can be influencing factors.

Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) has been used to successfully characterize the mechanical behavior of healthy and diseased muscles, but no study has been performed to investigate the reliability of MRE on lumbar muscles. The objective of this work was to determine the reliability of MRE techniques on lumbar muscles in both ex vivo phantom and in vivo human studies. In this study, fresh porcine leg muscles were used in the phantom study, and 80 healthy adults (38.6 ± 11.2 years, 40 women) were recruited in the human study. Five repeated stiffness maps were obtained from both the phantom and human muscles by using a gradient-echo MRE sequence with a pneumatic vibration on a 1.5 T MR scanner. The technical failure rate, coefficient of variation (CV), and quality score were assessed to evaluate the reliability of MRE, respectively. Analysis of variance was performed to compare the stiffness between different lumbar muscles, and the difference was significant if p < 0.05 after Bonferroni correction. The results showed that the MRE achieved a zero technical failure rate and a low CV of stiffness (6.24 ± 1.41%) in the phantom muscles. However, in the human study, the MRE exhibited high CVs of stiffness (21.57%–25.24%) in the lumbar muscles, and the technical failure rate was higher in psoas muscles (60.0–66.3% in) than in paraspinal muscles (0.0–2.5%). Further, higher quality scores were noticed in paraspinal muscles (7.31–7.71) than those in psoas muscles (1.83–2.06). In conclusion, the MRE was a reliable technique to investigate the mechanical property of lumbar muscles, but it was less reliable to assess stiffness in psoas muscles than paraspinal muscles.

This paper provides an overview of the contributions of the space-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) radio occultation (RO) measurements from the FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC2 (F7/C2) mission in advancing our understanding of ionospheric plasma physics in the purview of space weather. The global positioning system (GPS) occultation experiment (GOX) onboard FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC (F3/C), with more than four and half million ionospheric RO soundings during April 2006–May 2020, offered a unique three-dimensional (3D) perspective to examine the global electron density distribution and unravel the underlying physical processes. The current F7/C2 carries TGRS (Tri-GNSS radio occultation system) has tracked more than 4000 RO profiles within ±35° latitudes per day since 25 June 2019. Taking advantage of the larger number of low-latitude soundings, the F7/C2 TGRS observations were used here to examine the 3D electron density structures and electrodynamics of the equatorial ionization anomaly, plasma depletion bays, and four-peaked patterns, as well as the S4 index of GNSS signal scintillations in the equatorial and low-latitude ionosphere, which have been previously investigated by using F3/C measurements. The results demonstrated that the denser low-latitude soundings enable the construction of monthly global electron density maps as well the altitude-latitude profiles with higher spatial and temporal resolution windows, and revealed longitudinal and seasonal characteristics in greater detail. The enhanced F7/C2 RO observations were further applied by the Central Weather Bureau/Space Weather Operation Office (CWB/SWOO) in Taiwan and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/Space Weather Prediction Center (NOAA/SWPC) in the United States to specify the ionospheric conditions for issuing alerts and warnings for positioning, navigation, and communication customers. A brief description of the two models is also provided.

Poloxamer-188 (P188) is a nonionic triblock linear copolymer that can be used as a pharmaceutical excipient because of its amphiphilic nature. This study investigated whether P188 can act as an adjuvant to improve the immunogenicity of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) receptor binding domain (RBD) subunit vaccine. BALB/c mice were vaccinated twice with the RBD antigen alone or in combination with P188 or MF59 (a commercial adjuvant for comparison purposes). The resulting humoral and cellular immunity were assessed. Results showed that P188 helped elicit higher neutralizing activity than MF59 after vaccination. P188 induced significant humoral immune response, along with type 1 T helper (Th1) and type 2 T helper (Th2) cellular immune response when compared with MF59 due to repressing p38MAPK phosphorylation. Furthermore, P188 did not result in adverse effects such as fibrosis of liver or kidney after vaccination. In conclusion, P188 is a novel adjuvant that may be used for safe and effective immune enhancement of the SARS-CoV-2 RBD antigen.

Objective: Combinations of Chinese herbal products (CHPs) are widely used for Parkinson’s disease (PD) in Taiwan. Thereby, we investigated the use of CHPs in patients with PD.Methods: This study was a population-based cohort study that analyzed the data of patients with PD from the National Health Insurance Research Database. A total of 9,117 patients were selected from a random sample of one million individuals included in this database. We used multiple logistic regression models to estimate the adjusted odds ratios of the demographic factors and analyzed the formula and single CHPs commonly used for PD.Results: Traditional Chinese medicine users were more commonly female, younger, of white-collar status, and residents of Central Taiwan. Chaihu-Jia-Longgu-Muli-Tang was the most commonly used formula, followed by Ma-Zi-Ren-Wan and then Shao-Yao-Gan-Cao-Tang. The most commonly used single herb was Uncaria tomentosa (Willd. ex Schult.) DC., followed by Gastrodia elata Blume and then Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Rheum palmatum L., Rheum tanguticum Maxim. ex Balf., and Rheum officinale Baill.). Chaihu-Jia-Longgu-Muli-Tang and U. tomentosa (Willd. ex Schult.) DC. have shown neuroprotective effects in previous studies, and they have been used for managing non-motor symptoms of PD.Conclusion: Chaihu-Jia-Longgu-Muli-Tang and U. tomentosa (Willd. ex Schult.) DC. are the most commonly used CHPs for PD in Taiwan. Our results revealed the preferences in medication prescriptions for PD. Further studies are warranted to determine the effectiveness of these CHPs for ameliorating the various symptoms of PD, their adverse effects, and the mechanisms underlying their associated neuroprotective effects.

Background: Grounding refers to having direct contact with the Earth, such as by walking barefoot or lying on the ground. Research has found that grounding can improve inflammation, free radical damage, blood pressure, sleep quality, pain, stress, mood, and wound healing. However, there has been no research on the effect of utilizing grounding for patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Thus, in this study, we investigated the effectiveness of grounding as a non-pharmacological therapy for treating sleep disturbances, anxiety, and depression in patients with mild AD. Methods: Patients with mild AD were enrolled in the study. The electrochemical analyzer CHI 1205b was employed to check the electrochemical signals at acupoints KI1 and GV16. We used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) to evaluate sleep quality, anxiety, and depression, respectively, at weeks 0 and 12. Results: This 12-week placebo-controlled study enrolled 22 patients, but only 15 patients completed the 12-week intervention and survey. Grounding significantly improved PSQI scores compared to the sham-grounding group (mean ± SD: 0.3 ± 0.7 vs. 3.0 ± 1.9, p = 0.006). The scores on the BAI and BDI-II did not change significantly after grounding in comparison to the sham-grounding group. Conclusions: Grounding can improve sleep quality, but it does not significantly improve anxiety and depression among patients with mild AD.

In this paper, an effective electrocardiogram (ECG) recurrence plot (RP)-based arrhythmia classification algorithm that can be implemented in portable devices is presented. Public databases from PhysioNet were used to conduct this study including the MIT-BIH Atrial Fibrillation Database, the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database, the MIT-BIH Malignant Ventricular Ectopy Database, and the Creighton University Ventricular Tachyarrhythmia Database. ECG time series were segmented and converted using an RP, and two-dimensional images were used as inputs to the CNN classifiers. In this study, two-stage classification is proposed to improve the accuracy. The ResNet-18 architecture was applied to detect ventricular fibrillation (VF) and noise during the first stage, whereas normal, atrial fibrillation, premature atrial contraction, and premature ventricular contractions were detected using ResNet-50 in the second stage. The method was evaluated using 5-fold cross-validation which improved the results when compared to previous studies, achieving first and second stage average accuracies of 97.21% and 98.36%, sensitivities of 96.49% and 97.92%, positive predictive values of 95.54% and 98.20%, and F1-scores of 95.96% and 98.05%, respectively. Furthermore, a 5-fold improvement in the memory requirement was achieved when compared with a previous study, making this classifier feasible for use in resource-constricted environments such as portable devices. Even though the method is successful, first stage training requires combining four different arrhythmia types into one label (other), which generates more data for the other category than for VF and noise, thus creating a data imbalance that affects the first stage performance.

Background: We combined yoga with standard stroke rehabilitation and compared it to the rehabilitation alone for depression and balance in patients. Methods: Forty patients aged from 30 to 80 who had suffered a stroke 90 or more days previously were divided evenly with age stratification and patients’ will (hence not randomized). In the intervention group 16 completed 8-week stroke rehabilitation combined with 1 h of yoga twice weekly. Another 19 patients completed the standard rehabilitation as the control group. Results: The yoga group showed significant improvement in depression (Taiwanese Depression Questionnaire, p = 0.002) and balance (Berg Balance Scale, p < 0.001). However, the control group showed improvement only in balance (p = 0.001) but not in depression (p = 0.181). Further analysis showed both sexes benefitted in depression, but men had a greater improvement in balance than women. Depression in left-brain lesion patients improved more significantly than in those with right-brain lesion, whereas balance improved equally despite lesion site. For patients under or above the age of 60, depression and balance both significantly improved after rehabilitation. Older age is significantly related to poor balance but not depression. Conclusions: Combining yoga with rehabilitation has the potential to improve depression and balance. Factors related to sex, brain lesion site and age may influence the differences.

Particulate matter exposure has been known as a potential risk for the global burden of disease, such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Accumulating evidence suggests that PM2.5 (particulate matter with a diameter less than 2.5 μm) is associated with increased risk of kidney disease, but the mechanisms underlying the renal injury caused by PM2.5 remain to be elucidated. This study investigated the effects of PM2.5 on human proximal tubular epithelial (HK-2) cells by monolayer and 3D spheroid cultures and explored the potential mechanisms. The typical morphology of HK-2 cells showed epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT), resulting in reduced adhesion and enhanced migration after PM2.5 exposure, and was accompanied by decreased E-cadherin expression and increased vimentin and α-SMA expressions. Exposure to PM2.5 in the HK-2 cells could lead to an increase in interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels and cause the activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), which is involved in EMT features of HK-2 cells. Furthermore, blocking IL-6/STAT3 signaling by an IL-6 neutralizing antibody or STAT3 inhibitor was sufficient to reverse PM2.5-induced EMT characteristics of the HK-2 cells. Our study suggests that PM2.5 could induce early renal tubule cell injury, contributing to EMT change, and the induction of IL-6/STAT3 pathway may play an important role in this process.

This study evaluates cardiovascular and cerebral hemodynamics systems by only using non-invasive electrocardiography (ECG) signals. The Massachusetts General Hospital/Marquette Foundation (MGH/MF) and Cerebral Hemodynamic Autoregulatory Information System Database (CHARIS DB) from the PhysioNet database are used for cardiovascular and cerebral hemodynamics, respectively. For cardiovascular hemodynamics, the ECG is used for generating the arterial blood pressure (ABP), central venous pressure (CVP), and pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP). Meanwhile, for cerebral hemodynamics, the ECG is utilized for the intracranial pressure (ICP) generator. A deep convolutional autoencoder system is applied for this study. The cross-validation method with Pearson’s linear correlation (R), root mean squared error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE) are measured for the evaluations. Initially, the ECG is used to generate the cardiovascular waveform. For the ABP system—the systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressures (DBP)—the R evaluations are 0.894 ± 0.004 and 0.881 ± 0.005, respectively. The MAE evaluations for SBP and DBP are, respectively, 6.645 ± 0.353 mmHg and 3.210 ± 0.104 mmHg. Furthermore, for the PAP system—the systolic and diastolic pressures—the R evaluations are 0.864 ± 0.003 mmHg and 0.817 ± 0.006 mmHg, respectively. The MAE evaluations for systolic and diastolic pressures are, respectively, 3.847 ± 0.136 mmHg and 2.964 ± 0.181 mmHg. Meanwhile, the mean CVP evaluations are 0.916 ± 0.001, 2.220 ± 0.039 mmHg, and 1.329 ± 0.036 mmHg, respectively, for R, RMSE, and MAE. For the mean ICP evaluation in cerebral hemodynamics, the R and MAE evaluations are 0.914 ± 0.003 and 2.404 ± 0.043 mmHg, respectively. This study, as a proof of concept, concludes that the non-invasive cardiovascular and cerebral hemodynamics systems can be potentially investigated by only using the ECG signal.

Photonic-crystal (PC) surface-emitting lasers (SELs) with double-hole structure in the square-lattice unit cell were fabricated on GaSb-based type-I InGaAsSb/AlGaAsSb heterostructures. The relative shift of two holes was varied within one half of the lattice period. We measured the lasing wavelengths and threshold pumping densities of 16 PC-SELs and investigated their dependence on the double-hole shift. The experimental results were compared to the simulated wavelengths and threshold gains of four band-edge modes. The measured lasing wavelength did not exhibit switching of band-edge mode; however, the calculated lowest threshold mode switched as the double-hole shift exceeded one quarter of the lattice period. The identification of band-edge lasing mode revealed that modal gain discrimination was dominated over by its mode wavelength separation.

A reliable temporary bonding scheme with both inorganic amorphous silicon release layer and HD-3007 polyimide based on high 355-nm-wavelength laser absorption coefficient in release layer is proposed and investigated. Effects of laser absorption coefficient and laser ablation path are also studied to develop a high throughput laser ablation process. The bonding scheme can be achieved within the optimized temperature of 210 °C under 1 MPa bonding force. In addition, chemical resistance, mechanical strength with reliability assessment, and thermal stability test for bonded structure are inspected. There is no obvious degradation in electrical characterization after laser ablation, indicating that the temporary bonding scheme has high potential to be used for 3-D integration applications.

Hypertension affects a huge number of people around the world. It also has a great contribution to cardiovascular- and renal-related diseases. This study investigates the ability of a deep convolutional autoencoder (DCAE) to generate continuous arterial blood pressure (ABP) by only utilizing photoplethysmography (PPG). A total of 18 patients are utilized. LeNet-5- and U-Net-based DCAEs, respectively abbreviated LDCAE and UDCAE, are compared to the MP60 IntelliVue Patient Monitor, as the gold standard. Moreover, in order to investigate the data generalization, the cross-validation (CV) method is conducted. The results show that the UDCAE provides superior results in producing the systolic blood pressure (SBP) estimation. Meanwhile, the LDCAE gives a slightly better result for the diastolic blood pressure (DBP) prediction. Finally, the genetic algorithm-based optimization deep convolutional autoencoder (GDCAE) is further administered to optimize the ensemble of the CV models. The results reveal that the GDCAE is superior to either the LDCAE or UDCAE. In conclusion, this study exhibits that systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) can also be accurately achieved by only utilizing a single PPG signal.

Short noncoding endogenous RNAs, including microRNAs (miRNAs), are associated with the development and metastasis of multiple cancers. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the most active and abundant polyphenol in green tea, plays a crucial role in the modulation of miRNA expression, which is related to changes in cancer progression. In the present study, we explore whether EGCG exerts its suppressive effects on nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cells through miRNA regulation. The anoikis-resistant sphere-forming NPC cells grown under anchorage-independent conditions exhibit enhanced migratory properties, which were inhibited by EGCG treatment. The miR-296 level was lower in the anoikis-resistant cells than in the monolayer parental cells; however, miR-296 was significantly upregulated after EGCG treatment. We demonstrate that miR-296 is involved in the inhibitory effects of EGCG on the anoikis-resistant NPC cells through the downregulation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) activation. Our study is the first to demonstrate that EGCG inhibited the migratory properties of anoikis-resistant cells by modulating the expression of miRNA in NPC cells. Our results indicate the novel effects of EGCG on miRNA regulation to inhibit an invasive phenotype of NPC as well as the regulatory role of miR-296.

Within Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, the challenge is how to dig out the potentially valuable information from the collected data to support decision making. This paper proposes a method based on machine learning to predict long cycle maintenance time of wind turbines for efficient management in the power company. Long cycle maintenance time prediction makes the power company operate wind turbines as cost-effectively as possible to maximize the profit. Sensor data including operation data, maintenance time data, and event codes are collected from 31 wind turbines in two wind farms. Data aggregation is performed to filter out some errors and get significant information from the data. Then, the hybrid network is built to train the predictive model based on the convolutional neural network (CNN) and support vector machine (SVM). The experimental results show that the prediction of the proposed method reaches high accuracy, which helps drive up the efficiency of wind turbine maintenance.

Recent studies have shown that cancer stem-like cells (CSCs) within a tumor have the capacity for self-renewal and differentiation, and are associated with an aggressive phenotype and therapeutic resistance. Studies have also associated tumor progression with alterations in the levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, we cultured nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) CSCs in conditions that allowed sphere formation. The resulting sphere cells displayed stemness properties, characteristics of the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT), and increased expression of the CSC surface marker CD44. We further evaluated the association between CD44 expression and EMT marker expression, and any correlation with redox status, in these CSCs. We showed that the EMT in sphere cells is associated with the upregulation of CD44 expression and increased ROS generation, which might promote NPC aggressiveness. We also identified the coexpression of CD44 with the EMT marker N-cadherin in sphere cells, and downregulated CD44 expression after the addition of the antioxidant N-acetyl cysteine. Our results indicate that CD44 plays a role in the EMT phenotype of CSCs in NPC, and suggest its involvement in EMT-associated ROS production. These findings might facilitate the development of a novel therapy for the prevention of NPC recurrence and metastasis.

Astragalus membranaceus is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine for strengthening the host defense system. Astragalus membranaceus-polysaccharides is an effective component with various important bioactivities, such as immunomodulation, antioxidant, anti-diabetes, anti-inflammation and neuroprotection. In the present study, we determine the effects of Astragalus membranaceus-polysaccharides on metabolically stressed transgenic mice in order to develop this macromolecules for treatment of sporadic Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative disease with metabolic risk factors. Transgenic mice, at 10 weeks old prior to the appearance of senile plaques, were treated in combination of administrating high-fat diet and injecting low-dose streptozotocin to create the metabolically stressed mice model. Astragalus membranaceus-polysaccharides was administrated starting at 14 weeks for 7 weeks. We found that Astragalus membranaceus-polysaccharides reduced metabolic stress-induced increase of body weight, insulin and insulin and leptin level, insulin resistance, and hepatic triglyceride. Astragalus membranaceus-polysaccharides also ameliorated metabolic stress-exacerbated oral glucose intolerance, although the fasting blood glucose was only temporally reduced. In brain, metabolic stress-elicited astrogliosis and microglia activation in the vicinity of plaques was also diminished by Astragalus membranaceus-polysaccharides administration. The plaque deposition, however, was not significantly affected by Astragalus membranaceus-polysaccharides administration. These findings suggest that Astragalus membranaceus-polysaccharides may be used to ameliorate metabolic stress-induced diabesity and the subsequent neuroinflammation, which improved the behavior performance in metabolically stressed transgenic mice.

This study evaluates four databases from PhysioNet: The American Heart Association database (AHADB), Creighton University Ventricular Tachyarrhythmia database (CUDB), MIT-BIH Arrhythmia database (MITDB), and MIT-BIH Noise Stress Test database (NSTDB). The ANSI/AAMI EC57:2012 is used for the evaluation of the algorithms for the supraventricular ectopic beat (SVEB), ventricular ectopic beat (VEB), atrial fibrillation (AF), and ventricular fibrillation (VF) via the evaluation of the sensitivity, positive predictivity and false positive rate. Sample entropy, fast Fourier transform (FFT), and multilayer perceptron neural network with backpropagation training algorithm are selected for the integrated detection algorithms. For this study, the result for SVEB has some improvements compared to a previous study that also utilized ANSI/AAMI EC57. In further, VEB sensitivity and positive predictivity gross evaluations have greater than 80%, except for the positive predictivity of the NSTDB database. For AF gross evaluation of MITDB database, the results show very good classification, excluding the episode sensitivity. In advanced, for VF gross evaluation, the episode sensitivity and positive predictivity for the AHADB, MITDB, and CUDB, have greater than 80%, except for MITDB episode positive predictivity, which is 75%. The achieved results show that the proposed integrated SVEB, VEB, AF, and VF detection algorithm has an accurate classification according to ANSI/AAMI EC57:2012. In conclusion, the proposed integrated detection algorithm can achieve good accuracy in comparison with other previous studies. Furthermore, more advanced algorithms and hardware devices should be performed in future for arrhythmia detection and evaluation.

X-chromosome inactivation (XCI) is a phenomenon that occurs in female mammals. Typically, maternally- and paternally-derived X chromosomes are inactivated at approximately the same frequency. If preferential inactivation occurs, the person is considered to have skewed XCI. Skewed XCI has been reported to occur more frequently in women who experience recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). In this study, we sought to investigate if there is an association between skewed XCI and unexplained RPL in Taiwanese women. A total of 194 women who had experienced unexplained RPL were recruited into the study. Human androgen receptor or DXS6673E and DX15-134 loci were used in the XCI assay. The results of our study suggested that a cut-off point < 90% may not be justified for skewed XCI. Only extremely skewed (> 95%) XCI is associated with RPL. Extremely skewed XCI occurs in a subset of Taiwanese women with RPL.

Diabesity-associated metabolic stresses modulate the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). For further insights into the underlying mechanisms, we examine whether the genetic background of APPswe/PS1dE9 at the prodromal stage of AD affects peripheral metabolism in the context of diabesity. We characterized APPswe/PS1dE9 transgenic mice treated with a combination of high-fat diet with streptozotocin (HFSTZ) in the early stage of AD. HFSTZ-treated APPswe/PS1dE9 transgenic mice exhibited worse metabolic stresses related to diabesity, while serum β-amyloid levels were elevated and hepatic steatosis became apparent. Importantly, two-way analysis of variance shows a significant interaction between HFSTZ and genetic background of AD, indicating that APPswe/PS1dE9 transgenic mice are more vulnerable to HFSTZ treatment. In addition, body weight gain, high hepatic triglyceride, and hyperglycemia were positively associated with serum β-amyloid, as validated by Pearson's correlation analysis. Our data suggests that the interplay between genetic background of AD and HFSTZ-induced metabolic stresses contributes to the development of obesity and hepatic steatosis. Alleviating metabolic stresses including dysglycemia, obesity, and hepatic steatosis could be critical to prevent peripheral β-amyloid accumulation at the early stage of AD.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a leading cause of morbidity in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Recent evidence suggests that abdominal obesity (AO) may play a role in PAD. However, the association between AO and PAD has not been thoroughly studied in HD patients.The present cross-sectional study aimed to examine the relationship between AO and PAD in a cohort of 204 chronic HD patients. The ankle brachial index (ABI) was used as an estimate of the presence of PAD. Plasma adiponectin levels, interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels, high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) levels, and lipid profiles were measured. We derive a bulk-boundary correspondence for three-dimensional (3D) symmetry-protected topological phases with unitary symmetries. The correspondence consists of three equations that relate bulk properties of these phases to properties of their gapped, symmetry-preserving surfaces. Both the bulk and surface data appearing in our correspondence are defined via a procedure in which we gauge the symmetries of the system of interest and then study the braiding statistics of excitations of the resulting gauge theory. The bulk data are defined in terms of the statistics of bulk excitations, while the surface data are defined in terms of the statistics of surface excitations. An appealing property of these data is that it is plausibly complete in the sense that the bulk data uniquely distinguish each 3D symmetry-protected topological phase, while the surface data uniquely distinguish each gapped, symmetric surface. Our correspondence applies to any 3D bosonic symmetry-protected topological phase with finite Abelian unitary symmetry group. It applies to any surface that (1) supports only Abelian anyons and (2) has the property that the anyons are not permuted by the symmetries.

This paper uses the tropospheric pressure, temperature, and water vapor pressure observed by six micro-satellites of the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC (F3/C) constellation to study El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events from July 2006 to January 2012. The temperature and pressure profiles are used to derive the height, pressure, temperature, and potential temperature of the lapse rate tropopause. Following the calculation of the standard normalized Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) and the Niño 3.4 index, the corresponding indices of the four tropopause parameters are derived. Good agreements between the standard and F3/C-derived indices show that the derived indices are significant for monitoring ENSO signatures. With the uniform coverage, the global F3/C profiles are used to construct three-dimensional structures of temperature, pressure, and water vapor pressure to gain a better understanding of tropospheric structures and dynamics during the ENSO events.

A network of 6 ground-based GPS receivers in East Asia was employed to study seismo-traveling ionospheric disturbances (STIDs) triggered by an M 8.0 earthquake which occurred at Wenchuan on 12 May 2008. The network detected 5 STIDs on the south side of the epicenter area. A study on the distances of the detected STIDs to the epicenter versus their associated traveling times shows that the horizontal speed is about 600 m s-1. Applying the circle method, we find that the 5 circles intercept at a point right above the epicenter when the horizontal speed of 600 m s-1 is given. Global searches of the ray-tracing and the beam-forming techniques confirm that the STIDs are induced by vertical motions in the Earth¡¦s surface during the Wenchuan Earthquake.
