Sciaenidae is one of the most important coastal fisheries in Taiwan, both in production and economic value. It is also significant as the main targetted diet of Chinese white dolphins, Sousa chinensis, especially for the genus Johnius, such as J. taiwanensis, J. belangerii and J. distinctus, which is primarily found in central-western Taiwan coastal waters. Despite an abundance of Johnius species occurrences reported in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and the Taiwan Biodiversity Information Facility (TaiBIF) data portals (Mozambique, Australia, Taiwan, Korea, India, Indonesia, South Africa, Pakistan, Vietnam and China), there are no specific datasets that properly document the regional distribution of this genus, especially in Taiwanese waters. Thus, this paper describes a dataset of genus Johnius occurrences in waters on the central-western coast of Taiwan. The data collection for the present study was conducted from 2009 until 2020 and comprised 62 sampling events and 133 occurrence records. All fish specimens were collected by trawling in Miaoli, Changhwa and Yunlin Counties, Taiwan and brought back to the lab for identification, individual number count and body weight measurement. These processing data have been integrated and established in the Taiwan Fish Database and published in GBIF. This dataset contains six Johnius species and 2,566 specimens, making it comprehensive Johnius fish fauna and spatial distributional data on the coastal habitat in central-western Taiwanese waters.This dataset contains 133 occurrence records of Johnius species (Sciaenidae) with 2,566 specimens, making it the most extensive public dataset of Johnius distribution records in Taiwan. The publication of this dataset through the TaiBIF and GBIF dataset platforms demonstrated that the number of Johnius spatial and temporal records in Taiwan waters is influenced by the topographical structure of the Changyun Rise (CYR) in combination with the cold current of the China Coastal currents and bound with the warm currents of the Kuroshio and the South China Sea on the central-western coast of Taiwan. The data serve as the foundation for understanding the biogeography and Johnius species ecology in Taiwan's coastal waters, which present a 2°C water temperature difference split at the CYR.

Objective: Uremic pruritus (UP) is a prevalent and troublesome condition affecting individuals with end-stage renal failure, which results in intense pruritus, depression, as well as poor quality of sleep, significantly impacting their quality of life. According to previous studies, acupuncture and acupoint stimulation have been shown to provide additional benefits in treating UP in dialysis patients. In addition, using acupoints combination may yield superior effectiveness compared to utilizing a singular acupoint. To investigate the potential correlations between acupoint combinations, an association-rule analysis was employed. Materials and Methods: Apriori algorithms stand out as highly potent techniques for identifying associations in databases; this study utilized an association rule mining to examine the association rules of key acupoint groupings that could be employed for treating UP. Results: The analysis utilized information derived from the meta-analysis encompassing 40 randomized controlled trials that used acupuncture to treat UP. In total, 64 acupoints were analyzed, and 71 association rules were found. The following acupoint combinations: Auricular shenmen (TF4), Quchi (LI11), and Geshu (BL17); Auricular heart (Extra14), Sanyinjiao (SP6), and Auricular lung (CO14); and Auricular heart (Extra14), Xuehai (SP10), and Auricular lung (CO14) showed the strongest associations. Conclusion: Acupoints involving Auricular shenmen (TF4), Quchi (LI11), Geshu (BL17), Auricular heart (Extra14), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Auricular lung (CO14), and Xuehai (SP10) can be regarded as the core combination of acupuncture points for managing UP.

BackgroundUremic pruritus (UP) is a common complication of chronic kidney disease that causes sleep disturbances and increases all-cause mortality. Currently, the first-line medications for UP exhibit inadequate pruritus control with adverse effects. Various acupuncture point stimulation treatments (APSTs) have been shown to be effective as adjuvant therapies in UP, and a network meta-analysis can offer relative efficacy estimates for treatments for which head-to-head studies have not been performed.MethodsWe conducted a random-effects network meta-analysis on a consistency model to compare the different APSTs for UP. The primary outcomes were the mean visual analog scale (VAS) score and effectiveness rate (ER).ResultsThe network meta-analysis retrieved 27 randomized controlled trials involving 1969 patients. Compared with conventional treatment alone, combination treatment with acupuncture (mean difference, −2.63; 95% confidence interval, −3.71 to −1.55) was the most effective intervention in decreasing VAS scores, followed by acupoint injection and massage (mean difference, −2.04; 95% confidence interval, −3.96 to −0.12). In terms of the ER, conventional treatment with acupuncture and hemoperfusion (risk ratio, 14.87; 95% confidence interval, 2.18 to 101.53) was superior to other therapeutic combinations. Considering the VAS score and ER, combination treatment with acupoint injection and massage showed benefits in treating UP.ConclusionOur network meta-analysis provided relative efficacy data for choosing the optimal adjuvant treatment for UP. Abstract Background Glioblastoma (GBM), a malignant brain tumor, has poor survival outcomes due to recurrence or drug resistance. We found that SH3GLB1 is a crucial factor for cells to evade temozolomide (TMZ) cytotoxicity through autophagy-mediated oxidative phosphorylation, which is associated with CD133 levels. Therefore, we propose that SH3GLB1 participate in the impact on tumor-initiating cells (TICs). Methods The parental, the derived resistant cell lines and their CD133+ cells were used, and the levels of the proteins were compared by western blotting. Then RNA interference was applied to observe the effects of the target protein on TIC-related features. Finally, in vitro transcription assays were used to validate the association between SH3GLB1 and CD133. Results The CD133+ cells from resistant cells with enhanced SH3GLB1 levels more easily survived cytotoxic treatment than those from the parental cells. Inhibition of SH3GLB1 attenuated frequency and size of spheroid formation, and the levels of CD133 and histone 4 lysine 5 (H4K5) acetylation can be simultaneously regulated by SH3GLB1 modification. The H4K5 acetylation of the CD133 promoter was later suggested to be the mediating mechanism of SH3GLB1. Conclusions These data indicate that SH3GLB1 can regulate CD133 expression, suggesting that the protein plays a crucial role in TICs. Our findings on the effects of SH3GLB1 on the cells will help explain tumor resistance formation.

Abstract Background The mechanism by which glioblastoma evades temozolomide (TMZ)-induced cytotoxicity is largely unknown. We hypothesized that mitochondria plays a role in this process. Methods RNA transcriptomes were obtained from tumor samples and online databases. Expression of different proteins was manipulated using RNA interference or gene amplification. Autophagic activity and mitochondrial metabolism was assessed in vitro using the respective cellular and molecular assays. In vivo analysis were also carried out in this study. Results High SH3GLB1 gene expression was found to be associated with higher disease grading and worse survival profiles. Single-cell transcriptome analysis of clinical samples suggested that SH3GLB1 and the altered gene levels of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) were related to subsets expressing a tumor-initiating cell signature. The SH3GLB1 protein was regulated by promoter binding with Sp1, a factor associated with TMZ resistance. Downregulation of SH3GLB1 resulted in retention of TMZ susceptibility, upregulated p62, and reduced LC3B-II. Autophagy inhibition by SH3GLB1 deficiency and chloroquine resulted in attenuated OXPHOS expression. Inhibition of SH3GLB1 in resistant cells resulted in alleviation of TMZ-enhanced mitochondrial metabolic function, such as mitochondrial membrane potential, mitochondrial respiration, and ATP production. SH3GLB1 modulation could determine tumor susceptibility to TMZ. Finally, in animal models, resistant tumor cells with SH3GLB1 knockdown became resensitized to the anti-tumor effect of TMZ, including the suppression of TMZ-induced autophagy and OXPHOS. Conclusions SH3GLB1 promotes TMZ resistance via autophagy to alter mitochondrial function. Characterizing SH3GLB1 in glioblastoma may help develop new therapeutic strategies against this disease in the future.

Abstract Background Previous findings on the associations of thiazide use with skin cancers were conflicting. This study aimed to examine the associations of individual thiazide use with skin cancer risk, differentiated by subtypes of skin cancers, geographic regions, and cumulative doses of individual thiazides. Methods We searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for relevant studies on January 5, 2022, scanned the references of included studies, and consulted experts. We included case-control and cohort studies or randomized trials reporting the associations of individual thiazide or thiazide-like diuretics use with skin cancers. Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and melanoma were analysed separately. A random-effects model meta-analysis was conducted for pooled odds ratio (OR) and hazard ratio (HR) for skin cancers related to individual thiazide use. Results We included 15, 5, and 5 case-control or cohort studies reporting the risk for skin cancers associated with hydrochlorothiazide, bendroflumethiazide, and indapamide use, respectively, with 17,848,313 participants. The meta-analysis showed associations of hydrochlorothiazide use with increased risk of NMSC (OR 1.16, 95% CI 1.08–1.24; HR 1.26, 95% CI 1.04–1.54), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) (OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.06–1.65; HR 1.61, 95% CI 0.97–2.67), and melanoma (OR 1.11, 95% CI 1.02–1.20; HR 1.03, 95% CI 0.93–1.14). The increased risks for SCC were associated with high cumulative doses of hydrochlorothiazide (OR 2.56, 95% CI 1.43–4.57; HR 1.20, 95% CI 1.00–1.45). Hydrochlorothiazide use was associated with different subtypes of melanoma including superficial spreading (OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.05–1.33), nodular (OR 1.23, 95% CI 1.08–1.39), and lentigo maligna melanoma (OR 1.33, 95% CI 1.08–1.65). Various cumulative doses of hydrochlorothiazide were associated with increased odds for melanoma. However, the associations of hydrochlorothiazide use with increased risk of NMSC and melanoma only appeared in non-Asian countries. No meaningful increase in the risk for skin cancers was associated with bendroflumethiazide and indapamide. Conclusions Hydrochlorothiazide is associated with an increased risk for NMSC (especially SCC) and melanoma in non-Asian countries, whereas bendroflumethiazide and indapamide are not associated with a meaningful risk for skin cancers. Healthcare professionals and patients should be informed of the different risk profiles of skin cancers associated with different thiazides, cumulative doses, and regions. Abstract Background Evans calcaneal lengthening osteotomy is used to treat symptomatic flexible flatfoot when conservative treatment fails. Grafts such as autologous iliac bone grafts, allografts, and xenografts are implanted at the osteotomy site to lengthen the lateral column of the hindfoot. This study aimed to present the outcomes of an autologous mid-fibula bone graft used for calcaneal lengthening in symptomatic pes valgus in adolescents. Methods We retrospectively examined 23 ft of 13 adolescents who underwent surgery between July 2014 and January 2018. The radiological and clinical outcomes (American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society ankle-hindfoot scale scores) were assessed during a mean follow-up of 49.7 (range, 30.9–73.4) months. The mean distance of the lengthening site was measured to evaluate graft sinking or collapse. The Goldberg scoring system was used to determine the degree of union at the donor and recipient sites. Introduction: Uremic pruritus is common in dialysis patients and reduces their quality of life. Chinese herbal medicine has been effective in patients with this condition.Methods: We conducted a random-effects network meta-analysis to compare the efficacies of different Chinese herbal medicine treatments for uremic pruritus. Outcome measures including the overall effective rates, visual analog scale scores, C-reactive protein levels, and adverse drug reactions were analyzed.Results: The network meta-analysis retrieved 25 randomized controlled trials. Compared with conventional treatments alone, combination treatments with Xiao-Yang-Ke-Li was the most effective intervention in decreasing visual analog scale scores (mean difference −2.98, 95% mean difference −5.05 to −0.91) and levels of C-reactive protein (mean difference −5.01, 95% mean difference −7.27 to −2.75). Conventional treatment combined with Si-Wu Tang was superior to other therapeutic combinations when overall effective rates were determined. The best visual analog scale scores and overall effective rates were achieved by adjunctive treatment with the Touxie-Jiedu-Zhiyang decoction followed by uremic clearance granules; these treatments were the most beneficial for uremic pruritis.Conclusion: Our network meta-analysis provided the relative efficacies of different adjunctive Chinese herbal formulas. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a frequent comorbidity of cancer. Hyperinsulinemia secondary to T2DM promotes cancer progression, whereas antidiabetic agents, such as metformin, have anticancer effects. However, the detailed mechanism for insulin and metformin-regulated cancer cell proliferation remains unclear. This study identified a mechanism by which insulin upregulated the expression of c-Myc, sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1), and acetyl-coenzyme A (CoA) carboxylase 1 (ACC1), which are important regulators of lipogenesis and cell proliferation. Thymine DNA glycosylase (TDG), a DNA demethylase, was transactivated by c-Myc upon insulin treatment, thereby decreasing 5-carboxylcytosine (5caC) abundance in the SREBP1 promoter. On the other hand, metformin-activated AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) increased DNA methyltransferase 3A (DNMT3A) activity to increase 5-methylcytosine (5mC) abundance in the TDG promoter. This resulted in decreased TDG expression and enhanced 5caC abundance in the SREBP1 promoter. These findings demonstrate that c-Myc activates, whereas AMPK inhibits, TDG-mediated DNA demethylation of the SREBP1 promoter in insulin-promoted and metformin-suppressed cancer progression, respectively. This study indicates that TDG is an epigenetic-based therapeutic target for cancers associated with T2DM.

Given the identification of the new species Johnius taiwanesis, the Johnius genus in Taiwanese water is here reviewed through a collection of field samples, museum specimens, and a review of the Taiwanese scientific literature. Seven valid Johnius species were successfully identified and distinguished based on gill raker length, tip of upper jaw to mouth hinge length, tip of lower jaw to mouth hinge length, and length of second spine of anal fin. Our phylogenetic tree based on cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) showed the existence of high interspecific genetic diversity within the genus Johnius forming a monophyletic group. The Johnius species in Taiwan are mainly distributed in a latitude ranging from Xingda (22.4° N) to Hsinchu (24.8° N) with J. taiwanensis, J. distinctus, and J. belangerii representing the most abundant species caught throughout the year. Johnius amblycephalus and J. borneensis were only caught in the summer, while J. trewavasae was rarely caught. In conclusion, we provide a dichotomous key for the genus Johnius in Taiwan waters.

Uremic pruritus is a disturbing and refractory symptom in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease. Chinese herbal medicine has been reported to alleviate uremic pruritus. To investigate the effects of Chinese herbal medicine, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on patients with uremic pruritus. We searched databases (prior to 3 May 2022) for randomized controlled trials on the effects of Chinese herbal medicine in treating uremic pruritus. Our meta-analysis included 3311 patients from 50 randomized controlled trials. In patients with uremic pruritus, adjunctive Chinese herbal medicine significantly improved overall effectiveness (risk ratio 1.29, 95% CI 1.23 to 1.35), quality of life, renal function, reduced pruritus score, and inflammatory biomarkers compared to control groups with hemodialysis alone or with anti-pruritic treatments. Chinese herbal medicine treatment showed a time-dependent tendency in improving the visual analog scale of dialysis patients. Compared to control groups, no significantly higher risk of adverse events in patients taking Chinese herbal medicine (risk ratio 0.60, 95% CI 0.22 to 1.63). Chinese herbal medicine appears to be effective and safe in complementing the treatment of patients with uremic pruritus.

In response to acute insults to the central nervous system, such as pathogen invasion or neuronal injuries, glial cells become activated and secrete inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide (NO), cytokines, and chemokines. This neuroinflammation plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of chronic neurodegenerative diseases. Endogenous ascorbate levels are significantly decreased among patients with septic encephalopathy. Using the bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce neuroinflammation in primary neuron/glia cocultures, we investigated how L-ascorbate (vitamin C; Vit. C) affected neuroinflammation. LPS (100 ng/ml) induced the expression of inducible NO synthase (iNOS) and the production of NO, interleukin (IL)-6, and macrophage inflammatory protein-2 (MIP-2/CXCL2) in a time-dependent manner; however, cotreatment with Vit. C (5 or 10 mM) attenuated the LPS-induced iNOS expression and production of NO, IL-6, and MIP-2 production. The morphological features revealed after immunocytochemical staining confirmed that Vit. C suppressed LPS-induced astrocytic and microglial activation. Because Vit. C can be transported into neurons and glia via the sodium-dependent Vit. C transporter-2, we examined how Vit. C affected LPS-activated intracellular signaling in neuron/glia cocultures. The results indicated the increased activation (caused by phosphorylation) of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), such as p38 at 30 min and extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERKs) at 180 min after LPS treatment. The inhibition of p38 and ERK MAPK suppressed the LPS-induced production of inflammatory mediators. Vit. C also inhibited the LPS-induced activation of p38 and ERK. Combined treatments of Vit. C and the inhibitors of p38 and ERK yielded no additional inhibition compared with using the inhibitors alone, suggesting that Vit. C functions through the same signaling pathway (i.e., MAPK) as these inhibitors. Vit. C also reduced LPS-induced IκB-α degradation and NF-κB translocation. Thus, Vit. C suppressed the LPS-stimulated production of inflammatory mediators in neuron/glia cocultures by inhibiting the MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways.

The type of illumination systems and color filters used typically generate varying levels of color difference in capsule endoscopes, which influence medical diagnoses. In order to calibrate the color difference caused by the optical system, this study applied a radial imaging capsule endoscope (RICE) to photograph standard color charts, which were then employed to calculate the color gamut of RICE. Color gamut was also measured using a spectrometer in order to get a high-precision color information, and the results obtained using both methods were compared. Subsequently, color-correction methods, namely polynomial transform and conformal mapping, were used to improve the color difference. Before color calibration, the color difference value caused by the influences of optical systems in RICE was 21.45 ± 1.09. Through the proposed polynomial transformation, the color difference could be reduced effectively to 1.53 ± 0.07. Compared to another proposed conformal mapping, the color difference value was substantially reduced to 1.32 ± 0.11, and the color difference is imperceptible for human eye because it is <1.5. Then, real-time color correction was achieved using this algorithm combined with a field-programmable gate array, and the results of the color correction can be viewed from real-time images. Background: Neuroinflammation occurs in insulted regions of the brain and may be due to reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), cytokines, and chemokines produced by activated glia. Excessive production of neurotoxic molecules causes further neuronal damage. Low levels of vitamin D3 are a risk factor for various brain diseases. Methods: Using the bacterial endotoxin, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), to induce neuroinflammation in primary cortical neuron-glia cultures, we investigated how 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3) affected neuroinflammation. Results: LPS (100 ng/ml) induced the accumulation of nitrite and the production of ROS, interleukin (IL)-6, and macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-2 in time-dependent manners. Inhibition of p38 and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) but not c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) by 20 µM of SB203580, PD98059, and SP600125, significantly reduced LPS-induced ROS production, NO accumulation, and inducible NO synthase (iNOS) expression, respectively. LPS-induced IL-6 and MIP-2 were significantly attenuated by inhibition of p38, ERK, and JNK MAPK. Cotreatment with 1,25(OH)2D3 attenuated LPS-induced ROS production, NO accumulation, and iNOS expression in concentration-dependent manners. 1,25(OH)2D3 also reduced LPS-induced production of IL-6 and MIP-2. Similarly, iNOS, IL-6, and MIP-2 mRNA expression in cells treated with LPS significantly increased, whereas this effect was attenuated by 1,25(OH)2D3. Moreover, LPS-induced phosphorylation of p38, ERK, and JNK MAPK was significantly inhibited by 1,25(OH)2D3. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that 1,25(OH)2D3 reduced the LPS-stimulated production of inflammatory molecules in neuron-glia cultures by inhibiting MAPK pathways and the production of downstream inflammatory molecules. Muscles of 115 North Pacific albacore (ALB, Thunnus alalunga) and 75 Pacific bigeye tuna (BET, Thunnus obesus), collected from 2001 to 2006, were analyzed. No ALB, but 13 large BET had organic mercury (OHg) concentrations exceeding 1 μg g-1 wet weight. For both ALB and BET, total mercury (THg) and OHg concentrations were significantly and positively correlated with fork length (FL) and body weight. The muscle Hg bioaccumulation rates of BET were higher than those of ALB, particularly in the adult fish. Moreover, the lines had crossover points among the two species that imply the young BET (FL < 110 cm) contains lower muscle Hg concentrations than ALB of the same size. The suggested weekly dietary intake of ALB and small-BET meats is 340 g, and of BET meat it is 150 g for a 60-kg person based on the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) of methylmercury set by the WHO. AbstractIn this paper, the neural network (NN)-based navigation satellite subset selection is presented. The approach is based on approximation or classification of the satellite geometry dilution of precision (GDOP) factors utilizing the NN approach. Without matrix inversion required, the NN-based approach is capable of evaluating all subsets of satellites and hence reduces the computational burden. This would enable the use of a high-integrity navigation solution without the delay required for many matrix inversions. For overcoming the problem of slow learning in the BPNN, three other NNs that feature very fast learning speed, including the optimal interpolative (OI) Net, probabilistic neural network (PNN) and general regression neural network (GRNN), are employed. The network performance and computational expense on NN-based GDOP approximation and classification are explored. We demonstrate a silica-nanoparticle-doped hybrid-aligned nematic device, which can be operated in the dynamic mode and the multistable mode. Under ac voltage excitation, the interfacial polarization effect between the homogeneously dispersed nanoparticles and the liquid crystal (LC) host reduces the dielectric relaxation time of the LC-silica dispersion, giving the LC cell a fast response time for the dynamic mode. Under dc voltage excitation, the silica nanoparticles accumulated on the planar side of the cell, creating agglomerates to stabilize the homeotropically aligned LCs, which is retained after switching off the voltage, giving the cell bistable/multistable switching characteristics.
