Abstract

Commercial banks constitute a crucial segment of China’s financial system, and their efficient operation is directly linked to the development of other sectors within the national economy. The sustainable profitability of these banks is vital for maintaining the stability of China’s financial system. In the context of the current digital economy, it is of great theoretical and practical significance to conduct an in-depth analysis of the impact of financial technology (fintech) development on the sustainable profitability of commercial banks and its underlying mechanisms. Such research can promote the digital transformation of commercial banks, enhance risk supervision policies, and mitigate systemic financial risks. This study utilizes EViews software Version 13 to analyze annual data from 13 listed commercial banks in China over the period from 2011 to 2021. It examines the influence of fintech on the profitability of these banks, considering their unique characteristics and drawing insights from the existing literature on the mechanisms through which fintech affects bank profitability. Employing both a static panel fixed effects variable-intercept model and a dynamic panel generalized method of moments (GMM) model, the empirical findings indicate that fintech development significantly impacts the profitability of listed commercial banks.

Abstract

This study employs the Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange as a case study to investigate the effects of blockchain technology applications on transaction prices within the carbon trading market. Utilizing an event study methodology, the research demonstrates that blockchain technology significantly enhances the transparency, security, and efficiency of the carbon market, thereby exerting a positive influence on transaction prices. Nonetheless, the study also identifies several challenges associated with blockchain applications, including increased costs, heightened energy consumption, transaction delays, and substantial learning costs. To mitigate these issues, the study proposes optimizing blockchain architecture, incorporating Layer 2 technologies to expedite transaction processes, and developing innovative regulatory frameworks.

Abstract

We propose a hypergraph-based active learning scheme which we term $HS^2$, $HS^2$ generalizes the previously reported algorithm $S^2$ originally proposed for graph-based active learning with pointwise queries [Dasarathy et al., COLT 2015]. Our $HS^2$ method can accommodate hypergraph structures and allows one to ask both pointwise queries and pairwise queries. Based on a novel parametric system particularly designed for hypergraphs, we derive theoretical results on the query complexity of $HS^2$ for the above described generalized settings. Both the theoretical and empirical results show that $HS^2$ requires a significantly fewer number of queries than $S^2$ when one uses $S^2$ over a graph obtained from the corresponding hypergraph via clique expansion.

Abstract

We investigate if the observed small and nearly scale-invariant primordial cosmic perturbation, i.e. the perturbation amplitude $P_\zeta\sim10^{-9}$ and the spectral index $n_s \simeq 0.965$, is typical in the landscape of vacua after imposing anthropic selections on them. We consider the situation where the universe begins from a metastable vacuum driving a precedent inflation, a curvature-dominated open universe is created by tunneling, and the curvature energy is inflated away by new inflation. We argue that the initial inflaton field value is homogeneous but typically non-zero because of the quantum fluctuation of long wavelength modes created during the precedent inflation, and only the universe which accidentally has a small inflaton field value is anthropically selected. We show that this bias, together with certain distributions of inflation model parameters that are physically well-motivated, makes the observed small and nearly scale-invariant spectrum typical., Comment: 16+10 pages, 14 figures. v2: references added

Abstract

We discuss the relations between swampland conjectures and observational constraints on both inflation and dark energy. Using the requirement $|\nabla V|\geq c V$, with $c$ as a universal constant whose value can be derived from inflation, there may be no observable distinction between constant and non-constant models of dark energy. However, the latest modification of the above conjecture, which utilizes the second derivative of the potential, opens up the opportunity for observations to determine if the dark energy equation of state deviates from that of a cosmological constant. Abstract

It was recently pointed out that the cosmological constant (even metastable one) belongs to the so-called "swampland" and hence cannot be obtained as the low-energy limit of string theory that requires $|\nabla V| > c V$. If true, the dark energy needs to be described by an evolving scalar field, i.e., quintessence with $w>-1$ within supergravity. However, the large hierarchy between the supersymmetry breaking scale and the energy scale of dark energy imposes a challenge on building quintessence models in supergravity as the quintessence field typically acquires a mass of order the gravitino mass. We investigate two approaches to circumvent this obstacle. One is imposing shift symmetry to the quintessence sector, and we demonstrate any quintessence potential can be embedded into supergravity and the fifth force constraint gives little limit on quintessence field displacement, leading to possible observational signature $w>-1$. The structure is stable against quantum corrections. A particular example can address the cosmic coincidence problem. The other approach is sequestered supergravity, and the stability requirement strongly constrains the form of the Kahler potential and superpotential, and the quintessence field displacement is typically much smaller than Planck mass. In addition, to satisfy the fifth force constraint, the quintessence field displacement is further restricted in the sequestered case, requiring $c \ll 1$., Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure

17. Query K-means Clustering and the Double Dixie Cup Problem

Abstract

We consider the problem of approximate $K$-means clustering with outliers and side information provided by same-cluster queries and possibly noisy answers. Our solution shows that, under some mild assumptions on the smallest cluster size, one can obtain an $(1+\epsilon)$-approximation for the optimal potential with probability at least $1-\delta$, where $\epsilon>0$ and $\delta\in(0,1)$, using an expected number of $O(\frac{K^3}{\epsilon \delta})$ noiseless same-cluster queries and comparison-based clustering of complexity $O(ndK + \frac{K^3}{\epsilon \delta})$, here, $n$ denotes the number of points and $d$ the dimension of space. Compared to a handful of other known approaches that perform importance sampling to account for small cluster sizes, the proposed query technique reduces the number of queries by a factor of roughly $O(\frac{K^6}{\epsilon^3})$, at the cost of possibly missing very small clusters. We extend this settings to the case where some queries to the oracle produce erroneous information, and where certain points, termed outliers, do not belong to any clusters. Our proof techniques differ from previous methods used for $K$-means clustering analysis, as they rely on estimating the sizes of the clusters and the number of points needed for accurate centroid estimation and subsequent nontrivial generalizations of the double Dixie cup problem. 18. On the Minimax Misclassification Ratio of Hypergraph Community Detection

Abstract

Community detection in hypergraphs is explored. Under a generative hypergraph model called "d-wise hypergraph stochastic block model" (d-hSBM) which naturally extends the Stochastic Block Model from graphs to d-uniform hypergraphs, the asymptotic minimax mismatch ratio is characterized. For proving the achievability, we propose a two-step polynomial time algorithm that achieves the fundamental limit. The first step of the algorithm is a hypergraph spectral clustering method which achieves partial recovery to a certain precision level. The second step is a local refinement method which leverages the underlying probabilistic model along with parameter estimation from the outcome of the first step. To characterize the asymptotic performance of the proposed algorithm, we first derive a sufficient condition for attaining weak consistency in the hypergraph spectral clustering step. Then, under the guarantee of weak consistency in the first step, we upper bound the worst-case risk attained in the local refinement step by an exponentially decaying function of the size of the hypergraph and characterize the decaying rate. For proving the converse, the lower bound of the minimax mismatch ratio is set by finding a smaller parameter space which contains the most dominant error events, inspired by the analysis in the achievability part. It turns out that the minimax mismatch ratio decays exponentially fast to zero as the number of nodes tends to infinity, and the rate function is a weighted combination of several divergence terms, each of which is the Renyi divergence of order 1/2 between two Bernoulli's. The Bernoulli's involved in the characterization of the rate function are those governing the random instantiation of hyperedges in d-hSBM. Experimental results on synthetic data validate our theoretical finding that the refinement step is critical in achieving the optimal statistical limit., Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information Theory. 20. Adverse drug reactions of non-statin antihyperlipidaemic drugs in China from 1989 to 2019: a national database analysis

Abstract

Objective This study aims to understand the adverse drug reactions (ADRs) for non-statin antihyperlipidaemic drugs included in the China Anti-hyperlipidemic Drug Database.Design An approach of Chinese national database analysis was employed to screen clinical trials involving non-statin antihyperlipidaemic drugs from 1989 to 2019.Setting The database was provided by the China National Medical Products Administration Information Centre.Participants In total, 117 clinical studies with 8800 patients were selected from 2650 clinical trials of the Anti-hyperlipidemic Drug Database.Interventions The non-statin antihyperlipidaemic drugs were divided into three groups: (1) fibrates (fenofibrate, gemfibrozil, bezafibrate, etofylline clofibrate); (2) nicotinic acid and derivatives (niacin, acipimox) and (3) others (probucol, cholestyramine).Results The results of this study show that first, gastrointestinal symptoms were the most common reactions (6.975%), which account for approximately 50% of the reported cases with ADRs. Second, cholestyramine (16.418%) and gemfibrozil (13.158%) were the most common gastrointestinal side effect-causing non-statin antihyperlipidaemic drugs, which account for one-third of the population. Third, niacin (7.879%) and gemfibrozil (5.000%) were the most likely cause of liver disease symptoms. Finally, niacin (10.909%) and acipimox (18.847%) were the major non-statin antihyperlipidaemic drugs with skin symptoms.Conclusion This study revealed that gastrointestinal symptoms were the most common ADRs of fibrates, probucol and cholestyramine in the Chinese population. For nicotinic acid and derivatives, the ADRs of skin symptoms were the most common in China.

Abstract

What is Known on the Subject?: People living with schizophrenia have reduced physical function and are more likely to experience loneliness than those without condition.Low physical function is associated with greater loneliness in people with psychosis. However, it is unclear whether social isolation and loneliness contribute to impaired physical function in this population.Loneliness is linked to an increased risk of physical function impairment among older individuals, but research on patients living with schizophrenia is limited. What This Paper Adds to Existing Knowledge?: This study is the first to evaluate the longitudinal association of social isolation and loneliness with physical function among inpatients living with schizophrenia.It showed that more than one third of the participants experienced a decline in physical function over a 2‐year period.Loneliness, rather than social isolation, was associated with an increase in physical function impairment over 2 years among inpatients living with schizophrenia. Aim: This study examined the longitudinal association of social isolation and loneliness with physical function among inpatients living with schizophrenia. Methods: Physical function was assessed using measures of activities daily living (ADL), instrumental activities daily living (IADL) and the combination scores of ADL/IADL. Social isolation was indexed with five types of social connection and loneliness was measured using UCLA Loneliness Scale. Results: Social isolation was not associated with the measures of physical function over 2 years. Loneliness exhibited an association with IADL and ADL/IADL at follow‐up, after adjustment for baseline levels of the outcomes. These associations remained when both social isolation and loneliness were simultaneously entered into the model. Discussion: Loneliness, rather than social isolation, was associated with increased physical function impairment over 2 years among inpatients living with schizophrenia. Implications for Practice: Healthcare professionals should consider loneliness as a potential risk factor for impaired physical function. Abstract

Summary: The removal of the N-terminal formyl group on nascent proteins by peptide deformylase (PDF) is the most prevalent protein modification in bacteria. PDF is a critical target of antibiotic development; however, its role in bacterial physiology remains a long-standing question. This work used the time-resolved analyses of the Escherichia coli translatome and proteome to investigate the consequences of PDF inhibition. Loss of PDF activity rapidly induces cellular stress responses, especially those associated with protein misfolding and membrane defects, followed by a global down-regulation of metabolic pathways. Rapid membrane hyperpolarization and impaired membrane integrity were observed shortly after PDF inhibition, suggesting that the plasma membrane disruption is the most immediate and primary consequence of formyl group retention on nascent proteins. This work resolves the physiological function of a ubiquitous protein modification and uncovers its crucial role in maintaining the structure and function of the bacterial membrane.

45. An exploratory study of value-centric business model innovation in connected health : a study from the Taiwanese healthcare sector

Abstract

The global phenomenon of the ageing population has made Healthcare a universal issue. As a result, Connected Health (CH) is proposed as a promising solution. However, there is a need to explore how CH can be sustainable from a business perspective and how to optimize it to meet the needs of those involved in the CH ecosystem. This research aims to explore and discover the core driving factors of sustaining innovation and in particular Business Model Innovation (BMJ) based on the Taiwanese Connected Health Ecosystem. The research methodology used to address the research aim and objectives was an exploratory theory building approach primarily using qualitative data from multi-stage semi-structured interviews (n=60 in total). First, pilot interviews (n=\6) were held with key influencing stakeholders in the CH ecosystem. Second, stage one interviews (n=22) were conducted with the major stakeholders involved in the CH ecosystem in Taiwan. These interviews probe CH problems stated in the literature. They covered the cost, infrastructure, technology, business sustainability, BMT and collaboration and communication-related issues. The second stage interviews (n=22) were held one year later and addressed the gaps identified from the stage I interviews to discover systematic problems in CH and to probe longitudinal changes since the stage \ interviews. The results of stage one interview reveal CI-J's feasibility and also indicate that leadership management is essential to achieve business sustainability. The stage two data analysis suggests that BMI issues are more important than solely that of technology capability. Efficiency will be increased if there are more integration and less bureaucracy. CH for people and cross-generation interaction may be able to motivate caregivers and receivers. The overall interview results imply that collaboration with technology and BMl is significant in engineering CH ecosystems in Taiwan by offering a holistic CH industry blueprint and vision.
