Search

Hard X-ray-selected samples of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) provide one of the cleanest views of supermassive black hole accretion, but are biased against objects obscured by Compton-thick gas column densities of $N_{\rm H}$ $>$ 10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$. To tackle this issue, we present the NuSTAR Local AGN $N_{\rm H}$ Distribution Survey (NuLANDS)$-$a legacy sample of 122 nearby ($z$ $<$ 0.044) AGN primarily selected to have warm infrared colors from IRAS between 25$-$60 $\mu$m. We show that optically classified type 1 and 2 AGN in NuLANDS are indistinguishable in terms of optical [OIII] line flux and mid-to-far infrared AGN continuum bolometric indicators, as expected from an isotropically selected AGN sample, while type 2 AGN are deficient in terms of their observed hard X-ray flux. By testing many X-ray spectroscopic models, we show the measured line-of-sight column density varies on average by $\sim$ 1.4 orders of magnitude depending on the obscurer geometry. To circumvent such issues we propagate the uncertainties per source into the parent column density distribution, finding a directly measured Compton-thick fraction of 35 $\pm$ 9%. By construction, our sample will miss sources affected by severe narrow-line reddening, and thus segregates sources dominated by small-scale nuclear obscuration from large-scale host-galaxy obscuration. This bias implies an even higher intrinsic obscured AGN fraction may be possible, although tests for additional biases arising from our infrared selection find no strong effects on the measured column-density distribution. We present multiwavelength polarization measurements of the luminous blazar Mrk~501 over a 14-month period. The 2--8 keV X-ray polarization was measured with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) with six 100-ks observations spanning from 2022 March to 2023 April. Each IXPE observation was accompanied by simultaneous X-ray data from NuSTAR, Swift/XRT, and/or XMM-Newton. Complementary optical-infrared polarization measurements were also available in the B, V, R, I, and J bands, as were radio polarization measurements from 4.85 GHz to 225.5 GHz. Among the first five IXPE observations, we did not find significant variability in the X-ray polarization degree and angle with IXPE. However, the most recent sixth observation found an elevated polarization degree at $>3\sigma$ above the average of the other five observations. The optical and radio measurements show no apparent correlations with the X-ray polarization properties. Throughout the six IXPE observations, the X-ray polarization degree remained higher than, or similar to, the R-band optical polarization degree, which remained higher than the radio value. This is consistent with the energy-stratified shock scenario proposed to explain the first two IXPE observations, in which the polarized X-ray, optical, and radio emission arises from different regions., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

A fundamental question in galaxy and black-hole evolution remains how galaxies and their supermassive black holes have evolved together over cosmic time. Specifically, it is still unclear how the position of X-ray active galactic nucleus (AGN) host galaxies with respect to the star-forming main sequence (MS) may change with the X-ray luminosity ($L_\mathrm{X}$) of the AGN or the stellar mass ($M_\star$) of the host galaxy. We use data from XMM-SERVS to probe this issue. XMM-SERVS is covered by the largest medium-depth X-ray survey (with superb supporting multiwavelength data) and thus contains the largest sample to date for study. To ensure consistency, we locally derive the MS from a large reference galaxy sample. In our analysis, we demonstrate that the turnover of the galaxy MS does not allow reliable conclusions to be drawn for high-mass AGNs, and we establish a robust safe regime where the results do not depend upon the choice of MS definition. Under this framework, our results indicate that less-massive AGN host-galaxies ($\log M_\star\sim9.5-10.5$ $M_\odot$) generally possess enhanced SFRs compared to their normal-galaxy counterparts while the more-massive AGN host galaxies ($\log M_\star\sim10.5-11.5$ $M_\odot$) lie on or below the star-forming MS. Further, we propose an empirical model for how the placement of an AGN with respect to the MS (SFR$_{norm}$) evolves as a function of both $M_\star$ and $L_\mathrm{X}$., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) measured with high significance the X-ray polarization of the brightest Z-source Scorpius X-1, resulting in the nominal 2-8 keV energy band in a polarization degree of 1.0(0.2)% and a polarization angle of 8(6){\deg} at 90% of confidence level. This observation was strictly simultaneous with observations performed by NICER, NuSTAR, and Insight-HXMT, which allowed for a precise characterization of its broad-band spectrum from soft to hard X-rays. The source has been observed mainly in its soft state, with short periods of flaring. We also observed low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations. From a spectro-polarimetric analysis, we associate a polarization to the accretion disk at <3.2% at 90% of confidence level, compatible with expectations for an electron-scattering dominated optically thick atmosphere at the Sco X-1 inclination of 44{\deg}; for the higher-energy Comptonized component, we obtain a polarization of 1.3(0.4)%, in agreement with expectations for a slab of Thomson optical depth of ~7 and an electron temperature of ~3 keV. A polarization rotation with respect to previous observations by OSO-8 and PolarLight, and also with respect to the radio-jet position angle, is observed. This result may indicate a variation of the polarization with the source state that can be related to relativistic precession or to a change in the corona geometry with the accretion flow.

Recent observations with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) of two anomalous X-ray pulsars provided evidence that X-ray emission from magnetar sources is strongly polarized. Here we report on the joint IXPE and XMM-Newton observations of the soft {\gamma}-repeater SGR 1806-20. The spectral and timing properties of SGR 1806-20 derived from XMM-Newton data are in broad agreement with previous measurements; however, we found the source at an all-time-low persistent flux level. No significant polarization was measured apart from the 4-5 keV energy range, where a probable detection with PD=31.6\pm 10.5% and PA=-17.6\pm 15 deg was obtained. The resulting polarization signal, together with the upper limits we derive at lower and higher energies 2-4 and 5-8 keV, respectively) is compatible with a picture in which thermal radiation from the condensed star surface is reprocessed by resonant Compton scattering in the magnetosphere, similar to what proposed for the bright magnetar 4U 0142+61., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Active dwarf galaxies are important because they contribute to the evolution of dwarf galaxies and can reveal their hosted massive black holes. However, the sample size of such sources beyond the local universe is still highly limited. In this work, we search for active dwarf galaxies in the recently completed XMM-Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (XMM-SERVS). XMM-SERVS is currently the largest medium-depth X-ray survey covering 13 $\mathrm{deg}^2$ in three extragalactic fields, which all have well-characterized multi-wavelength information. After considering several factors that may lead to misidentifications, we identify 73 active dwarf galaxies at $z<1$, which constitutes the currently largest X-ray-selected sample beyond the local universe. Our sources are generally less obscured than predictions based on the massive-AGN (active galactic nucleus) X-ray luminosity function and have a low radio-excess fraction. We find that our sources reside in similar environments to inactive dwarf galaxies. We further quantify the accretion distribution of the dwarf-galaxy population after considering various selection effects and find that it decreases with X-ray luminosity, but redshift evolution cannot be statistically confirmed. Depending upon how we define an AGN, the active fraction may or may not show a strong dependence on stellar mass. Their Eddington ratios and X-ray bolometric corrections significantly deviate from the expected relation, which is likely caused by several large underlying systematic biases when estimating the relevant parameters for dwarf galaxies. We perform X-ray spectral analyses to derive characteristics (e.g., column density, X-ray luminosity) of $\approx$10,200 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the XMM-Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (XMM-SERVS), which was designed to investigate the growth of supermassive black holes across a wide dynamic range of cosmic environments. Using physical torus models (e.g., Borus02) and a Bayesian approach, we uncover 22 representative Compton-thick (CT; $N_{\rm H} \;>\; 1.5\times10^{24}\; \rm cm^{-2}$) AGN candidates with good signal-to-noise ratios as well as a large sample of 136 heavily obscured AGNs. We also find an increasing CT fraction (\fct ) from low ($z<0.75$) to high ($z>0.75$) redshift. Our CT candidates tend to show hard X-ray spectral shapes and dust extinction in their SED fits, which may shed light on the connection between AGN obscuration and host-galaxy evolution., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present new estimates on the fraction of heavily X-ray obscured, Compton-thick (CT) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) out to a redshift of $z \leq$ 0.8. From a sample of 540 AGNs selected by mid-IR (MIR) properties in observed X-ray survey fields, we forward model the observed-to-intrinsic X-ray luminosity ratio ($R_{L_{\text{X}}}$) with a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation to estimate the total fraction of CT AGNs ($f_{\text{CT}}$), many of which are missed in typical X-ray observations. We create model $N_{\text{H}}$ distributions and convert these to $R_{L_{\text{X}}}$ using a set of X-ray spectral models. We probe the posterior distribution of our models to infer the population of X-ray non-detected sources. From our simulation we estimate a CT fraction of $f_{\text{CT}}$ = $\text{0.555}^{+\text{0.037}}_{-\text{0.032}}$. We perform an X-ray stacking analysis for sources in Chandra X-ray Observatory fields and find that the expected soft (0.5-2 keV) and hard (2-7 keV) observed fluxes drawn from our model to be within 0.48 and 0.12 dex of our stacked fluxes, respectively. Our results suggests at least 50% of all MIR-selected AGNs, possibly more, are Compton-thick ($N_{\text{H}} \gtrsim$ 10$^{\text{24}}$ cm$^{-\text{2}}$), which is in excellent agreement with other recent work using independent methods. This work indicates that the total number of AGNs is higher than can be identified using X-ray observations alone, highlighting the importance of a multiwavelength approach. A high $f_{\text{CT}}$ also has implications for black hole (BH) accretion physics and supports models of BH and galaxy co-evolution that include periods of heavy obscuration., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, plus appendix figures. We present a multi-wavelength analysis of the dwarf Seyfert-2 galaxy J$144013+024744$, a candidate obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) thought to be powered by an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH, $M_\bullet \approx 10^{4-6} M_\odot$) of mass $M_{\bullet} \sim 10^{5.2}M_\odot$. To study its X-ray properties, we targeted J$144013+024744$ with NuSTAR for $\approx 100$ ks. The X-ray spectrum was fitted with absorbed power law, Pexmon and a physical model (RXTorus). A Bayesian X-ray analysis was performed to estimate the posteriors. The phenomenological and the physical models suggest the AGN to be heavily obscured by a column density of $N_{\rm H} = (3.4-7.0)\times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$. In particular, the RXTorus model with a sub-solar metallicity suggests the obscuring column to be almost Compton-thick. We compared the $2-10$ keV intrinsic X-ray luminosity with the inferred X-ray luminosities based on empirical scaling relations for unobscured AGNs using $L_{\rm [OIV](25.89\mu {\rm m})}$, $L_{[{\rm OIII}](5007 {\rm angstrom})}$, and $L_{6\rm \mu m}$ and found that the high-excitation $[{\rm OIV}]$ line provides a better estimate of the intrinsic $2-10$ keV X-ray luminosity ($L_{2-10}^{\rm int} \sim 10^{41.41}{\rm erg s}^{-1}$). Our results suggest that J$144013+024744$ is the first type-2 dwarf galaxy that shows X-ray spectroscopic evidence for obscuration. The column density that we estimated is among the highest measured to date for IMBH-powered AGNs, implying that a typical AGN torus geometry might extend to the low-mass end. The luminosity function (LF) of active galactic nuclei (AGN) probes the history of supermassive black hole assembly and growth across cosmic time. To mitigate selection biases, we present a consistent analysis of the AGN LFs derived for both X-ray and mid-infrared (MIR) selected AGN in the XMM-Large Scale Structure (XMM-LSS) field. There are 4268 AGN used to construct the MIR luminosity function (IRLF) and 3427 AGN used to construct the X-ray luminosity function (XLF), providing the largest census of the AGN population out to $z=4$ in both bands with significant reduction in uncertainties. We are able for the first time to see the knee of the IRLF at $z>2$ and observe a flattening of the faint-end slope as redshift increases. The bolometric luminosity density, a proxy for the cosmic black hole accretion history, computed from our LFs shows a peak at $z\approx2.25$ consistent with recent estimates of the peak in the star formation rate density (SFRD). However, at earlier epochs, the AGN luminosity density is flatter than the SFRD. If confirmed, this result suggests that the build up of black hole mass outpaces the growth of stellar mass in high mass systems at $z\gtrsim 2.5$. This is consistent with observations of redshift $z\sim 6$ quasars which lie above the local $M-\sigma$ relationship. The luminosity density derived from the IRLF is higher than that from the XLF at all redshifts. In active galactic nuclei (AGN), fluorescent Fe K$\alpha$ (iron) line emission is generally interpreted as originating from obscuring material around a supermassive black hole (SMBH) on the scale of a few parsecs (pc). However, recent Chandra studies indicate the existence of iron line emission extending to kpc scales in the host galaxy. The connection between iron line emission and large-scale material can be spatially resolved directly only in nearby galaxies, but could be inferred in more distant AGNs by a connection between line emission and star-forming gas and dust that is more extended than the pc-scale torus. Here we present the results from a stacking analysis and X-ray spectral fitting performed on sources in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) 7 Ms observations. From the deep stacked spectra, we select sources with stellar mass $\log(M_*/M_\odot)>10$ at $0.5

In the present study, we propose a new surrogate model, called common kernel-smoothed proper orthogonal decomposition (CKSPOD), to efficiently emulate the spatiotemporal evolution of fluid flow dynamics. The proposed surrogate model integrates and extends recent developments in Gaussian process learning, high-fidelity simulations, projection-based model reduction, uncertainty quantification, and experimental design, rendering a systematic, multidisciplinary framework. The novelty of the CKSPOD emulation lies in the construction of a common Gram matrix, which results from the Hadamard product of Gram matrices of all observed design settings. The Gram matrix is a spatially averaged temporal correlation matrix and contains the temporal dynamics of the corresponding sampling point. The common Gram matrix synthesizes the temporal dynamics by transferring POD modes into spatial functions at each observed design setting, which remedies the phase-difference issue encountered in the kernel-smoothed POD (KSPOD) emulation, a recent fluid flow emulator proposed in Chang et al. (2020). The CKSPOD methodology is demonstrated through a model study of flow dynamics of swirl injectors with three design parameters. A total of 30 training design settings and 8 validation design settings are included. Both qualitative and quantitative results show that the CKSPOD emulation outperforms the KSPOD emulation for all validation cases, and is capable of capturing small-scale wave structures on the liquid-film surface faithfully. The turbulent kinetic energy prediction using CKSPOD reveals lower predictive uncertainty than KSPOD, thereby allowing for more accurate and precise flow predictions. The turnaround time of the CKSPOD emulation is about 5 orders of magnitude faster than the corresponding high-fidelity simulation, which enables an efficient and scalable framework for design exploration and optimization.

We present a large sample of infrared-luminous candidate active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that lack X-ray detections in Chandra, XMM-Newton, and NuSTAR fields. We selected all optically detected SDSS sources with redshift measurements, combined additional broadband photometry from WISE, UKIDSS, 2MASS, and GALEX, and modeled the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of our sample sources. We parameterize nuclear obscuration in our SEDs with $E(B\!-\!V)_{\text{AGN}}$ and uncover thousands of powerful obscured AGNs that lack X-ray counterparts, many of which are identified as AGN candidates based on straightforward WISE photometric criteria. Using the observed luminosity correlation between restframe 2-10 keV ($L_{\text{X}}$) and restframe AGN 6 $\mu{\text{m}}$ ($L_{\text{MIR}}$), we estimate the intrinsic X-ray luminosities of our sample sources and combine these data with flux limits from X-ray catalogs to determine lower limits on nuclear obscuration. Using the ratio of intrinsic-to-observed X-ray luminosity ($R_{L_{\text{X}}}$), we find a significant fraction of sources with column densities approaching $N_{\text{H}}>$ 10$^{\text{24}}$ cm$^{-{\text{2}}}$, suggesting that multiwavelength observations are necessary to account for the population of heavily obscured AGNs. We simulate the underlying $N_{\text{H}}$ distribution for the X-ray non-detected sources in our sample through survival analysis, and confirm the presence of AGN activity via X-ray stacking. We present an analysis of a sample of 69 local obscured Swift/Burst Alert Telescope active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with X-ray spectra from NuSTAR and infrared (IR) spectral energy distributions from Herschel and WISE. We combine this X-ray and IR phenomenological modeling and find a significant correlation between reflected hard X-ray emission and IR AGN emission, with suggestive indications that this correlation may be stronger than the one between intrinsic hard X-ray and IR emissions. This relation between the IR and reflected X-ray emission suggests that both are the result of the processing of intrinsic emission from the corona and accretion disk by the same structure. We explore the resulting implications on the underlying distribution of covering fraction for all AGNs, by generating mock observables for the reflection parameter and IR luminosity ratio using empirical relations found for the covering fraction with each quantity. We find that the observed distributions of the reflection parameter and IR-to-X-ray ratio are reproduced with broad distributions centered around covering fractions of at least ~40%-50%, whereas narrower distributions match our observations only when centered around covering fractions of ~70%-80%. Our results are consistent with both independent estimates of the covering fractions of individual objects and the typical covering fraction obtained on the basis of obscured fractions for samples of AGNs. Several recent studies have reported different intrinsic correlations between the AGN mid-IR luminosity ($L_{MIR}$) and the rest-frame 2-10 keV luminosity ($L_{X}$) for luminous quasars. To understand the origin of the difference in the observed $L_{X}-L_{MIR}$ relations, we study a sample of 3,247 spectroscopically confirmed type 1 AGNs collected from Bo\"{o}tes, XMM-COSMOS, XMM-XXL-North, and the SDSS quasars in the Swift/XRT footprint spanning over four orders of magnitude in luminosity. We carefully examine how different observational constraints impact the observed $L_{X}-L_{MIR}$ relations, including the inclusion of X-ray non-detected objects, possible X-ray absorption in type 1 AGNs, X-ray flux limits, and star formation contamination. We find that the primary factor driving the different $L_{X}-L_{MIR}$ relations reported in the literature is the X-ray flux limits for different studies. When taking these effects into account, we find that the X-ray luminosity and mid-IR luminosity (measured at rest-frame $6\mu m$, or $L_{6\mu m}$) of our sample of type 1 AGNs follow a bilinear relation in the log-log plane: $\log L_X =(0.84\pm0.03)\times\log L_{6\mu m}/10^{45}{\rm erg\;s^{-1}} + (44.60\pm0.01)$ for $L_{6\mu m} < 10^{44.79}{\rm erg\;s^{-1}} $, and $\log L_X = (0.40\pm0.03)\times\log L_{6\mu m}/10^{45}{\rm erg\;s^{-1}} +(44.51\pm0.01)$ for $L_{6\mu m} \geq 10^{44.79}{\rm erg\;s^{-1}} $. This suggests that the luminous type 1 quasars have a shallower $L_{X}-L_{MIR}$ correlation than the approximately linear relations found in local Seyfert galaxies. This result is consistent with previous studies reporting a luminosity-dependent $L_{X}-L_{MIR}$ relation, and implies that assuming a linear $L_{X}-L_{MIR}$ relation to infer the neutral gas column density for X-ray absorption might overestimate the column densities in luminous quasars., Comment: The parameters in Equation 2 of the previous version were derived without including XXL-North, and are inconsistent with the parameters reported in the abstract. Some reddened quasars appear to be transitional objects in the merger-induced black hole growth/galaxy evolution paradigm, where a heavily obscured nucleus starts to be unveiled by powerful quasar winds evacuating the surrounding cocoon of dust and gas. Hard X-ray observations are able to peer through this gas and dust, revealing the properties of circumnuclear obscuration. Here, we present NuSTAR and XMM-Newton/Chandra observations of FIRST-2MASS selected red quasars F2M 0830+3759 and F2M 1227+3214. We find that though F2M 0830+3759 is moderately obscured ($N_{\rm H,Z} = 2.1\pm0.2 \times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) and F2M 1227+3214 is mildly absorbed ($N_{\rm H,Z} = 3.4^{+0.8}_{-0.7}\times10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$) along the line-of-sight, heavier global obscuration may be present in both sources, with $N_{\rm H,S} = 3.7^{+4.1}_{-2.6} \times 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $< 5.5\times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$, for F2M 0830+3759 and F2M 1227+3214, respectively. F2M 0830+3759 also has an excess of soft X-ray emission below 1 keV which is well accommodated by a model where 7% of the intrinsic AGN X-ray emission is scattered into the line-of-sight. While F2M 1227+3214 has a dust-to-gas ratio ($E(B-V)$/$N_{\rm H}$) consistent with the Galactic value, the $E(B-V)$/$N_{\rm H}$ value for F2M 0830+3759 is lower than the Galactic standard, consistent with the paradigm that the dust resides on galactic scales while the X-ray reprocessing gas originates within the dust-sublimation zone of the broad-line-region. The X-ray and 6.1$\mu$m luminosities of these red quasars are consistent with the empirical relations derived for high-luminosity, unobscured quasars, extending the parameter space of obscured AGN previously observed by NuSTAR to higher luminosities., Comment: accepted for publication to ApJ; 34 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables

We present a measurement of the star formation properties of a uniform sample of mid-IR selected, unobscured and obscured quasars (QSO1s and QSO2s) in the Bo\"otes survey region. We use an spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis for photometric data spanning optical to far-IR wavelengths to decompose AGN and host galaxy components. We find that when compared to a matched sample of QSO1s, the QSO2s have higher far-IR detection fractions, far-IR fluxes and infrared star formation luminosities ($L_{\rm IR}^{\rm SF}$) by a factor of $\sim2$. Correspondingly, we show that the AGN obscured fraction rises from 0.3 to 0.7 between $4-40\times10^{11}L_\odot$. We also find evidence associating the absorption in the X-ray emission with the presence of far-IR emitting dust. Overall, these results are consistent with galaxy evolution models in which quasar obscurations can be associated with a dust-enshrouded starburst galaxies., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the results of recent studies on the co-evolution of galaxies and the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) using Herschel far-infrared and Chandra X-ray observations in the Bo\"otes survey region. For a sample of star-forming (SF) galaxies, we find a strong correlation between galactic star formation rate and the average SMBH accretion rate in SF galaxies. Recent studies have shown that star formation and AGN accretion are only weakly correlated for individual AGN, but this may be due to the short variability timescale of AGN relative to star formation. We investigate the effect of active galactic nucleus (AGN) variability on the observed connection between star formation and black hole accretion in extragalactic surveys. Recent studies have reported relatively weak correlations between observed AGN luminosities and the properties of AGN hosts, which has been interpreted to imply that there is no direct connection between AGN activity and star formation. However, AGNs may be expected to vary significantly on a wide range of timescales (from hours to Myr) that are far shorter than the typical timescale for star formation (>~100 Myr). This variability can have important consequences for observed correlations. We present a simple model in which all star-forming galaxies host an AGN when averaged over ~100 Myr timescales, with long-term average AGN accretion rates that are perfectly correlated with the star formation rate (SFR). We show that reasonable prescriptions for AGN variability reproduce the observed weak correlations between SFR and L_AGN in typical AGN host galaxies, as well as the general trends in the observed AGN luminosity functions, merger fractions, and measurements of the average AGN luminosity as a function of SFR. These results imply there may be a tight connection between AGN activity and SFR over galaxy evolution timescales, and that the apparent similarities in rest-frame colors, merger rates, and clustering of AGNs compared to "inactive" galaxies may be due primarily to AGN variability. We present a measurement of the average supermassive black hole accretion rate (BHAR) as a function of star formation rate (SFR) for galaxies in the redshift range 0.25

We report ultrafast surface pump and interface probe experiments on photoexcited carrier transport across single crystal bismuth films on sapphire. The film thickness is sufficient to separate carrier dynamics from lattice heating and strain, allowing us to investigate the time-scales of momentum relaxation, heat transfer to the lattice and electron-hole recombination. The measured electron-hole ($e-h$) recombination time is 12--26 ps and ambipolar diffusivity is 18--40 cm$^{2}$/s for carrier excitation up to $\sim 10^{19} \text{cm}^{-3}$. By comparing the heating of the front and back sides of the film, we put lower limits on the rate of heat transfer to the lattice, and by observing the decay of the plasma at the back of the film, we estimate the timescale of electron-hole recombination. We interpret each of these timescales within a common framework of electron-phonon scattering and find qualitative agreement between the various relaxation times observed. We find that the carrier density is not determined by the $e-h$ plasma temperature after a few picoseconds. The diffusion and recombination become nonlinear with initial excitation $\gtrsim 10^{20} \text{cm}^{-3}$.

We have measured the transport properties of two mesoscopic hybrid loops composed of a normal-metal arm and a superconducting arm. The samples differed in the transmittance of the normal/superconducting interfaces. While the low transmittance sample showed monotonic behavior in the low temperature resistance, magnetoresistance and differential resistance, the high transmittance sample showed reentrant behavior in all three measurements. This reentrant behavior is due to coherent Andreev reflection at the normal/superconducting interfaces. We compare the reentrance effect for the three different measurements and discuss the results based on the theory of quasiclassical Green's functions.

We present a new, ambitious survey performed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory of the 9.3 deg2 Boötes field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. The wide field probes a statistically representative volume of the universe at high redshift. The Chandra Deep Wide-field Survey exploits the excellent sensitivity and angular resolution of Chandra over a wide area, combining 281 observations spanning 15 yr, for a total exposure time of 3.4 Ms, and detects 6891 X-ray point sources down to limiting fluxes of 4.7 × 10−16, 1.5 × 10−16, and 9 × 10−16 erg cm−2 s−1 in the 0.5–7, 0.5–2, and 2–7 keV bands, respectively. The robustness and reliability of the detection strategy are validated through extensive, state-of-the-art simulations of the whole field. Accurate number counts, in good agreement with previous X-ray surveys, are derived thanks to the uniquely large number of point sources detected, which resolve 65.0% ± 12.8% of the cosmic X-ray background between 0.5 and 2 keV and 81.0% ± 11.5% between 2 and 7 keV. Exploiting the wealth of multiwavelength data available on the field, we assign redshifts to ∼94% of the X-ray sources, estimate their obscuration, and derive absorption-corrected luminosities. We provide an electronic catalog containing all of the relevant quantities needed for future investigations.
