Abstract: The Mars Microphone is one of the five measurement techniques of SuperCam, an improved version of the ChemCam instrument that has been functioning aboard the Curiosity rover for several years. SuperCam is located on the Rover's Mast Unit, to take advantage of the unique pointing capabilities of the rover's head. In addition to being the first instrument to record sounds on Mars, the SuperCam Microphone can address several original scientific objectives: the study of sound associated with laser impacts on Martian rocks to better understand their mechanical properties, the improvement of our knowledge of atmospheric phenomena at the surface of Mars: atmospheric turbulence, convective vortices, dust lifting processes and wind interactions with the rover itself. The microphone will also help our understanding of the sound signature of the different movements of the rover: operations of the robotic arm and the mast, driving on the rough floor of Mars, monitoring of the pumps, etc ... The SuperCam Microphone was delivered to the SuperCam team in early 2019 and integrated at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL, Pasadena, CA) with the complete SuperCam instrument. The Mars 2020 Mission launched in July 2020 and landed on Mars on February 18th 2021. The mission operations are expected to last until at least August 2023. Abstract: Martian soils are critically important for understanding the history of Mars, past potentially habitable environments, returned samples, and future human exploration. This study examines soil crusts on the floor of Jezero crater encountered during initial phases of the Mars 2020 mission. Soil surface crusts have been observed on Mars at other locations, starting with the two Viking Lander missions. Rover observations show that soil crusts are also common across the floor of Jezero crater, revealed in 45 of 101 locations where rover wheels disturbed the soil surface, two out of seven helicopter flights that crossed the wheel tracks, and four of eight abrasion/drilling sites. Most soils measured by the SuperCam laser‐induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) instrument show high hydrogen content at the surface, and fine‐grained soils also show a visible/near infrared (VISIR) 1.9 μm H2O absorption feature. The Planetary Instrument for X‐ray Lithochemistry (PIXL) and SuperCam observations suggest the presence of salts at the surface of rocks and soils. The correlation of S and Cl contents with H contents in SuperCam LIBS measurements suggests that the salts present are likely hydrated. On the "Naltsos" target, magnesium and sulfur are correlated in PIXL measurements, and Mg is tightly correlated with H at the SuperCam points, suggesting hydrated Mg‐sulfates. Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer (MEDA) observations indicate possible frost events and potential changes in the hydration of Mg‐sulfate salts. Jezero crater soil crusts may therefore form by salts that are hydrated by changes in relative humidity and frost events, cementing the soil surface together. Plain Language Summary: Martian soils are important for understanding the history of Mars as well as future sample return and human exploration. Soil crusts in Jezero crater, which are also broadly found across Mars, can be observed when they are disturbed, such as by rover wheels or coring/abrasion activities. Jezero crater soil crusts are examined using images from the Perseverance and Ingenuity cameras, as well as using data from the SuperCam, PIXL, Mastcam‐Z, and MEDA instruments. Soil crusts are common in Jezero crater and show characteristics including hydration at the surface and the presence of salts that might contain water. MEDA instrument measurements indicate that changes in the hydration state of salts may result during conditions measured at Jezero crater. Jezero crater soil crusts may therefore form by salts that are present on the surface that can add or lose water during changes in relative atmospheric humidity and frost events. These changes in the amount of water present in the salts may result in soil surfaces that are cemented together, forming the crusts observed at Jezero crater. A better understanding of Mars soil crusts will help in the understanding of samples returned to Earth from Mars, as well as future human exploration. Abstract: International audience; Séítah is the stratigraphically lowest formation visited by Perseverance in the Jezero crater floor. We present the data obtained by SuperCam: texture by imagery, chemistry by LIBS, and mineralogy by VISIR and Raman spectroscopy. The Séítah formation consists of igneous, weakly altered, rocks dominated by millimeter-size grains of olivine with the presence of low-Ca and high-Ca pyroxenes, and other primary minerals (e.g., plagioclase, Cr-Fe-Ti oxides, phosphates). Along a ∼140 m long section in Séítah, SuperCam analyses showed evidence of geochemical and mineralogical variations, from the contact with the overlying Máaz formation, going deeper in the formation. Bulk rock and olivine Mg#, grain size, olivine content increase gradually further from the contact. Along the section, olivine Mg# are not in equilibrium with the bulk rock Mg#, indicating local olivine accumulation. These observations are consistent with Séítah being the deep ultramafic member of a cumulate series derived from the fractional crystallization and slow cooling of the parent magma at depth. Possible magmatic processes and exhumation mechanisms of Séítah are discussed. Séítah rocks show some affinity with some rocks at Gusev crater, and with some martian meteorites suggesting that such rocks are not rare on the surface of Mars. Séítah is part of the Nili Fossae regional olivine-carbonate unit observed from orbit. Future exploration of Perseverance on the rim and outside of the crater will help determine if the observations from the crater floor can be extrapolated to the whole unit, or if this unit is composed of distinct sub-units with various origins.

Abstract: We study the diurnal cycle of rapid thermal fluctuations observed by the Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer, onboard the Perseverance rover at Jezero Crater, as a function of local time and season. In this context, rapid refers to periods between 15 min and half a second. Some insight is also provided into wind fluctuations that are the base for most of the existing theories on turbulent flows. The results expand the observations from previous Mars missions, namely Viking, Mars Pathfinder, and Phoenix, and they add to our knowledge of near‐surface fluctuations on Mars. (a) Probability distribution functions of the fluctuations are determined and found to have exponential tails. This means that models that represent the interaction within the environment and with the surface as a stochastic forcing need to account for the sudden events responsible for the exponential tails. (b) Power density spectra are calculated and show several dynamical regimes with different slopes associated to forcing, an intermediate regime, and a higher frequency regime. All change with time of the day. The results imply that the fastest regime is not a universal scenario for the temperature fluctuations near the surface. (c) The scale dependence of the fluctuations confirms the existence of intermittent outbursts associated to the slower fluctuations, possibly associated to the larger scale structures, and explains why the spectral density slopes do not follow Kolmogorov's law. Understanding the role of larger scale structures would help refine scaling theories of the near‐surface Martian atmosphere and its interactions with the surface. Plain Language Summary: The Martian atmosphere is mostly driven by solar radiative forcing that also controls how it interacts with the surface. Atmospheric phenomena respond within seconds to years, but models can only resolve limited ranges of these time scales. This work explores how temperature fluctuates at time scales faster than what models typically resolve, and how this variability affects phenomena at the time scales that they resolve. The statistical properties of rapid environmental changes, or fluctuations, caused by solar forcing help us understand how the lowest atmosphere and surface evolve and interact. Theories that have been tested on Earth predicting how energy transfers or dissipates between the fast and slow dynamical regimes are explored here searching for rules that relate both regimes on another world. This work finds that fluctuations of air temperature and horizontal winds near the Martian surface do not follow probability distributions typical of normal random processes. The energy transfer rate is not consistent at scales faster than 10 s with a unique, or universal, rule relating fast to slow fluctuations. Finally, it suggests that this lack of universality is caused by intermittent disruptions through sudden large coherent structures, like convective vortices and waves, that influence how temperature dissipates. Abstract: The Perseverance rover landed in Jezero crater, Mars, to investigate ancient lake and river deposits. We report observations of the crater floor, below the crater’s sedimentary delta, finding the floor consists of igneous rocks altered by water. The lowest exposed unit, informally named Séítah, is a coarsely crystalline olivine-rich rock, which accumulated at the base of a magma body. Fe-Mg carbonates along grain boundaries indicate reactions with CO2-rich water, under water-poor conditions. Overlying Séítah is a unit informally named Máaz, which we interpret as lava flows or the chemical complement to Séítah in a layered igneous body. Voids in these rocks contain sulfates and perchlorates, likely introduced by later near-surface brine evaporation. Core samples of these rocks were stored aboard Perseverance for potential return to Earth.

Abstract: The SuperCam instrument of the NASA MARS 2020 Perseverance rover combines a suite of atomic and molecular spectroscopies intended for an extensive description of rocks, soils and minerals in the surroundings of the landing site of the mission – the Jezero crater. The microphone installed on the SuperCam instrument allows the acquisition of acoustic signals resulting from the expansion of laser-induced plasmas towards the atmosphere. Apart from being affected by the propagation characteristics of the Mars atmosphere, the acoustic signal has an additional component related to the properties of the target including surface morphology, hardness, deformation parameters, and elasticity, among others. This information is currently being investigated as a complementary resource for characterization of the ablated material and may well supplement the LIBS data gathered from coincident laser shots. This talk will present SuperCam acoustic data of rocks and minerals found in the traverse of the Perseverance rover and will discuss its correlation with LIBS spectra. Universidad de Málaga. Abstract: The SuperCam instrument of the NASA MARS 2020 Perseverance rover combines a suite of atomic and molecular spectroscopies intended for an extensive description of rocks, soils and minerals in the surroundings of the landing site of the mission – the Jezero crater. The microphone installed on the SuperCam instrument allows the acquisition of acoustic signals resulting from the expansion of laser-induced plasmas towards the atmosphere. Apart from being affected by the propagation characteristics of the Mars atmosphere, the acoustic signal has an additional component related to the properties of the target including surface morphology, hardness, deformation parameters, and elasticity, among others. This information is currently being investigated as a complementary resource for characterization of the ablated material and may well supplement the LIBS data gathered from coincident laser shots. This talk will present SuperCam acoustic data of rocks and minerals found in the traverse of the Perseverance rover and will discuss its correlation with LIBS spectra. Universidad de Málaga. Abstract: The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover, which landed in February 2021, is carrying the SuperCam remote sensing suite [1,2]. It is a multifunctional spectroscopy instrument to analyze Martian rocks and soils with Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), time resolved Raman and luminescence, Visible and Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy, and color context imaging. It also includes a microphone (see Fig. 1) that records acoustic pressure fluctuations in the 100 Hz to 10 kHz frequency bandwidth. In particular, it supports LIBS investigation by listening to laser-induced sparks caused by the supersonic expansion of the plasma plume [3, 4]. The microphone also contributes to atmospheric science by recording the ambient noise [wind, turbulence, 5, 6] and it already listened to unique sounds from the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter flights. This abstract focuses on the first analysis of the LIBS acoustic signal recorded on Martian targets near the Octavia E. Butler landing site of Perseverance. Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS/ASU Listening to laser-induced sparks on Mars: The LIBS experiment of Supercam uses a pulsed laser in the infrared (1064nm) to ablate rock or soil targets at the Mars surface at distance up to 7 meters. A standard LIBS burst consists of 30 laser shots repeated at the same location on a target. It creates an ablation pit up to hundreds of µm deep, depending on the target hardness (see LIBS pits in Fig. 2) [4, 7]. Longer bursts of 150 shots, called depth profiles, can also be performed to look for any chemical stratification with depth. (b) RMI context mosaic highlighting the LIBS pits.Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech/ASU/MSSS and NASA/JPL-Caltech/LANL/CNES/IRAP It has been shown in lab studies [3, 4] that recording of the LIBS acoustic signal helps to determine the target physical properties (hardness) and also the laser pit volume by looking at the decrease of the signal amplitude with the number of laser shots performed at the same location. In addition, laser sparks may also be used to study rock coatings. In particular, it will help to determine the depth of the transition between a coating and its underlying host rock [8]. Moreover, as the start of the microphone recording is triggered on the laser pulse, the propagation time of the sound wave from the ground up to the microphone height is precisely measured. Therefore, it gives the sound speed along the sound propagation path. This parameter is used to estimate the ‘acoustic temperature’, an average of the air temperature over the two first meters from the ground [9]. First results on Martian targets: Up to sol 78 of the mission, the Supercam microphone has recorded the LIBS acoustic signal from 12 targets, including 3 soil targets and 2 depth profiles. The LIBS acoustic signal recorded on the float rock Hedgehog (sol 37) is represented in Fig. 3. The time series (Fig. 3a) shows a shot-to-shot decrease of the acoustic amplitude over the 30 shots fired in this target. The comparison with the hardness calibration curve presented in [4] suggests a soft target with a Vickers hardness lower than 10 and an ablated volume of about 200 µm. The frequency spectrum (Fig. 3b) is showing an acoustic bandwidth between 2 kHz and 10 kHz (see Fig. 3a), consistent with pre-flight calibrations [10]. Some gaps in the spectrum (5700 Hz, 10900 Hz, 14800 Hz) are indicative of destructive interferences induced by the reflection of the sound wave over the structure of the mast. Some wind-induced signal are also noticed in the time series (see red circles in Fig. 3a). They can be easily filtered, as their frequency content is lower than 500 Hz [6]. However, the influence of the turbulent atmosphere on the LIBS acoustic signal, needs to be assessed, as it was not tested in the laboratory. Figure 3 - Time series (a) and power spectral density (b) of the LIBS acoustic signal recorded on point #5 of the Hedgehog target (sol 37) As for the soil targets, the LIBS acoustic data show a clear decrease with increasing shot number due to shielding within the self-induced hole and also helps to determine whether the laser hit a coarse grain (louder sound) or fine-grained soil. Perspectives: The Supercam microphone has the unique capability to record the acoustic signal induced by the laser-induced plasma. The microphone will help to document the target hardness along the rover traverse and complement the chemical information provided by LIBS by adding an estimation of the ablated depth. Abstract: Nine simulations are used to predict the meteorology and aeolian activity of the Mars 2020 landing site region. Predicted seasonal variations of pressure and surface and atmospheric temperature generally agree. Minimum and maximum pressure is predicted at Ls similar to 145 degrees and 250 degrees, respectively. Maximum and minimum surface and atmospheric temperature are predicted at Ls similar to 180 degrees and 270 degrees, respectively; i.e., are warmest at northern fall equinox not summer solstice. Daily pressure cycles vary more between simulations, possibly due to differences in atmospheric dust distributions. Jezero crater sits inside and close to the NW rim of the huge Isidis basin, whose daytime upslope (similar to east-southeasterly) and nighttime downslope (similar to northwesterly) winds are predicted to dominate except around summer solstice, when the global circulation produces more southerly wind directions. Wind predictions vary hugely, with annual maximum speeds varying from 11 to 19 ms(-1) and daily mean wind speeds peaking in the first half of summer for most simulations but in the second half of the year for two. Most simulations predict net annual sand transport toward the WNW, which is generally consistent with aeolian observations, and peak sand fluxes in the first half of summer, with the weakest fluxes around winter solstice due to opposition between the global circulation and daytime upslope winds. However, one simulation predicts transport toward the NW, while another predicts fluxes peaking later and transport toward the WSW. Vortex activity is predicted to peak in summer and dip around winter solstice, and to be greater than at InSight and much greater than in Gale crater.

Abstract: On the NASA 2020 rover mission to Jezero crater, the remote determination of the texture, mineralogy and chemistry of rocks is essential to quickly and thoroughly characterize an area and to optimize the selection of samples for return to Earth. As part of the Perseverance payload, SuperCam is a suite of five techniques that provide critical and complementary observations via Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), Time-Resolved Raman and Luminescence (TRR/L), visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (VISIR), high-resolution color imaging (RMI), and acoustic recording (MIC). SuperCam operates at remote distances, primarily 2–7 m, while providing data at sub-mm to mm scales. We report on SuperCam’s science objectives in the context of the Mars 2020 mission goals and ways the different techniques can address these questions. The instrument is made up of three separate subsystems: the Mast Unit is designed and built in France; the Body Unit is provided by the United States; the calibration target holder is contributed by Spain, and the targets themselves by the entire science team. This publication focuses on the design, development, and tests of the Mast Unit; companion papers describe the other units. The goal of this work is to provide an understanding of the technical choices made, the constraints that were imposed, and ultimately the validated performance of the flight model as it leaves Earth, and it will serve as the foundation for Mars operations and future processing of the data.

34. Diurnal Cycle of Rapid Air Temperature Fluctuations at Jezero Crater: Probability Distributions, Exponential Tails, Scaling, and Intermittency

Abstract: We study the diurnal cycle of rapid thermal fluctuations observed by the Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer, onboard the Perseverance rover at Jezero Crater, as a function of local time and season. In this context, rapid refers to periods between 15 min and half a second. Some insight is also provided into wind fluctuations that are the base for most of the existing theories on turbulent flows. The results expand the observations from previous Mars missions, namely Viking, Mars Pathfinder, and Phoenix, and they add to our knowledge of near‐surface fluctuations on Mars. (a) Probability distribution functions of the fluctuations are determined and found to have exponential tails. This means that models that represent the interaction within the environment and with the surface as a stochastic forcing need to account for the sudden events responsible for the exponential tails. (b) Power density spectra are calculated and show several dynamical regimes with different slopes associated to forcing, an intermediate regime, and a higher frequency regime. All change with time of the day. The results imply that the fastest regime is not a universal scenario for the temperature fluctuations near the surface. (c) The scale dependence of the fluctuations confirms the existence of intermittent outbursts associated to the slower fluctuations, possibly associated to the larger scale structures, and explains why the spectral density slopes do not follow Kolmogorov's law. Understanding the role of larger scale structures would help refine scaling theories of the near‐surface Martian atmosphere and its interactions with the surface. The Martian atmosphere is mostly driven by solar radiative forcing that also controls how it interacts with the surface. Atmospheric phenomena respond within seconds to years, but models can only resolve limited ranges of these time scales. This work explores how temperature fluctuates at time scales faster than what models typically resolve, and how this variability affects phenomena at the time scales that they resolve. The statistical properties of rapid environmental changes, or fluctuations, caused by solar forcing help us understand how the lowest atmosphere and surface evolve and interact. Theories that have been tested on Earth predicting how energy transfers or dissipates between the fast and slow dynamical regimes are explored here searching for rules that relate both regimes on another world. This work finds that fluctuations of air temperature and horizontal winds near the Martian surface do not follow probability distributions typical of normal random processes. The energy transfer rate is not consistent at scales faster than 10 s with a unique, or universal, rule relating fast to slow fluctuations. Finally, it suggests that this lack of universality is caused by intermittent disruptions through sudden large coherent structures, like convective vortices and waves, that influence how temperature dissipates. Abstract: Nine simulations are used to predict the meteorology and aeolian activity of the Mars 2020 landing site region. Predicted seasonal variations of pressure and surface and atmospheric temperature generally agree. Minimum and maximum pressure is predicted at Ls∼145° and 250°, respectively. Maximum and minimum surface and atmospheric temperature are predicted at Ls∼180° and 270°, respectively; i.e., are warmest at northern fall equinox not summer solstice. Daily pressure cycles vary more between simulations, possibly due to differences in atmospheric dust distributions. Jezero crater sits inside and close to the NW rim of the huge Isidis basin, whose daytime upslope (∼east-southeasterly) and nighttime downslope (∼northwesterly) winds are predicted to dominate except around summer solstice, when the global circulation produces more southerly wind directions. Wind predictions vary hugely, with annual maximum speeds varying from 11 to 19ms−1 and daily mean wind speeds peaking in the first half of summer for most simulations but in the second half of the year for two. Most simulations predict net annual sand transport toward the WNW, which is generally consistent with aeolian observations, and peak sand fluxes in the first half of summer, with the weakest fluxes around winter solstice due to opposition between the global circulation and daytime upslope winds. However, one simulation predicts transport toward the NW, while another predicts fluxes peaking later and transport toward the WSW. Vortex activity is predicted to peak in summer and dip around winter solstice, and to be greater than at InSight and much greater than in Gale crater.

40. Discussion of sound propagation through the turbulent Martian atmosphere and implications for inference of turbulence spectra.

Abstract: Chide et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 155, 420-435 (2024)] provide a first attempt to infer the spectrum of temperature fluctuations on Mars from experimental data on the variances of travel-time and log-amplitude fluctuations recorded by the microphone on board the Perseverance rover. However, the theoretical formulations that were used to interpret the travel-time data have limitations. In addition to explaining those issues, this article also outlines approaches for predicting statistical characteristics of acoustic signals in the Martian atmosphere. In particular, the experimentally observed dependence of the travel-time variance on the propagation range can be attributed to ground-blocking of buoyantly produced turbulent velocity fluctuations and the non-Markov character of phase fluctuations.

41. An acoustic investigation of the near-surface turbulence on Mars.

Abstract: The Perseverance rover is carrying out an original acoustic experiment on Mars: the SuperCam microphone records the spherical acoustic waves generated by laser sparks at distances from 2 m to more than 8 m. These N-shaped acoustic waves scatter from the multiple local heterogeneities of the turbulent atmosphere. Therefore, large and random fluctuations of sound travel time and intensity develop as the waves cross the medium. The variances of the travel times and the scintillation index (normalized variance of the sound intensity) are studied within the mathematical formalism of the propagation of spherical acoustic waves through thermal turbulence to infer statistical properties of the Mars atmospheric temperature fluctuation field. The comparison with the theory is made by simplifying assumptions that do not include wind fluctuations and diffraction effects. Two Earth years (about one Martian year) of observations acquired during the maximum convective period (10:00-14:00 Mars local time) show a good agreement between the dataset and the formalism: the travel time variance diverges from the linear Chernov solution exactly where the density of occurrence of the first caustic reaches its maximum. Moreover, on average, waves travel faster than the mean speed of sound due to a fast path effect, which is also observed on Earth. To account for the distribution of turbulent eddies, several power spectra are tested and the best match to observation is obtained with a generalized von Karman spectrum with a shallower slope than the Kolmogorov cascade, ϕ(k)∝(1+k2L2)-4/3. It is associated with an outer scale of turbulence, L, of 11 cm at 2 m above the surface and a standard deviation of 6 K over 9 s for the temperature. These near-surface atmospheric properties are consistent with a weak to moderate wave scattering regime around noon with little saturation. Abstract: Before Perseverance, Jezero crater's floor was variably hypothesized to have a lacustrine, lava, volcanic airfall, or aeolian origin. SuperCam observations in the first 286 Mars days on Mars revealed a volcanic and intrusive terrain with compositional and density stratification. The dominant lithology along the traverse is basaltic, with plagioclase enrichment in stratigraphically higher locations. Stratigraphically lower, layered rocks are richer in normative pyroxene. The lowest observed unit has the highest inferred density and is olivine-rich with coarse (1.5 millimeters) euhedral, relatively unweathered grains, suggesting a cumulate origin. This is the first martian cumulate and shows similarities to martian meteorites, which also express olivine disequilibrium. Alteration materials including carbonates, sulfates, perchlorates, hydrated silicates, and iron oxides are pervasive but low in abundance, suggesting relatively brief lacustrine conditions. Orbital observations link the Jezero floor lithology to the broader Nili-Syrtis region, suggesting that density-driven compositional stratification is a regional characteristic.

Abstract: Despite the importance of sand and dust to Mars geomorphology, weather, and exploration, the processes that move sand and that raise dust to maintain Mars' ubiquitous dust haze and to produce dust storms have not been well quantified in situ, with missions lacking either the necessary sensors or a sufficiently active aeolian environment. Perseverance rover's novel environmental sensors and Jezero crater's dusty environment remedy this. In Perseverance's first 216 sols, four convective vortices raised dust locally, while, on average, four passed the rover daily, over 25% of which were significantly dusty ("dust devils"). More rarely, dust lifting by nonvortex wind gusts was produced by daytime convection cells advected over the crater by strong regional daytime upslope winds, which also control aeolian surface features. One such event covered 10 times more area than the largest dust devil, suggesting that dust devils and wind gusts could raise equal amounts of dust under nonstorm conditions.

44. Acoustic monitoring of laser-induced phase transitions in minerals: implication for Mars exploration with SuperCam.

Abstract: The SuperCam instrument suite onboard the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover uses the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique to determine the elemental composition of rocks and soils of the Mars surface. It is associated with a microphone to retrieve the physical properties of the ablated targets when listening to the laser-induced acoustic signal. In this study, we report the monitoring of laser-induced mineral phase transitions in acoustic data. Sound data recorded during the laser ablation of hematite, goethite and diamond showed a sharp increase of the acoustic signal amplitude over the first laser shots. Analyses of the laser-induced craters with Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy indicate that both hematite and goethite have been transformed into magnetite and that diamond has been transformed into amorphous-like carbon over the first laser shots. It is shown that these transitions are the root cause of the increase in acoustic signal, likely due to a change in target's physical properties as the material is transformed. These results give insights into the influence of the target's optical and thermal properties over the acoustic signal. But most importantly, in the context of the Mars surface exploration with SuperCam, as this behavior occurs only for specific phases, it demonstrates that the microphone data may help discriminating mineral phases whereas LIBS data only have limited capabilities., (© 2021. Abstract: The SuperCam instrument suite provides the Mars 2020 rover, Perseverance, with a number of versatile remote-sensing techniques that can be used at long distance as well as within the robotic-arm workspace. These include laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), remote time-resolved Raman and luminescence spectroscopies, and visible and infrared (VISIR; separately referred to as VIS and IR) reflectance spectroscopy. A remote micro-imager (RMI) provides high-resolution color context imaging, and a microphone can be used as a stand-alone tool for environmental studies or to determine physical properties of rocks and soils from shock waves of laser-produced plasmas. SuperCam is built in three parts: The mast unit (MU), consisting of the laser, telescope, RMI, IR spectrometer, and associated electronics, is described in a companion paper. The on-board calibration targets are described in another companion paper. Here we describe SuperCam's body unit (BU) and testing of the integrated instrument. The BU, mounted inside the rover body, receives light from the MU via a 5.8 m optical fiber. The light is split into three wavelength bands by a demultiplexer, and is routed via fiber bundles to three optical spectrometers, two of which (UV and violet; 245-340 and 385-465 nm) are crossed Czerny-Turner reflection spectrometers, nearly identical to their counterparts on ChemCam. The third is a high-efficiency transmission spectrometer containing an optical intensifier capable of gating exposures to 100 ns or longer, with variable delay times relative to the laser pulse. This spectrometer covers 535-853 nm ( 105 - 7070 cm - 1 Raman shift relative to the 532 nm green laser beam) with 12 cm - 1 full-width at half-maximum peak resolution in the Raman fingerprint region. The BU electronics boards interface with the rover and control the instrument, returning data to the rover. Thermal systems maintain a warm temperature during cruise to Mars to avoid contamination on the optics, and cool the detectors during operations on Mars. Results obtained with the integrated instrument demonstrate its capabilities for LIBS, for which a library of 332 standards was developed. Examples of Raman and VISIR spectroscopy are shown, demonstrating clear mineral identification with both techniques. Luminescence spectra demonstrate the utility of having both spectral and temporal dimensions.
