Abstract

Numerous TRIZ-based methods to extract the core problems to be solved within the inventive problem-solving process are released. Nevertheless, one acknowledged limitation of these methods is how to select the most important problem, "contradiction," to be solved. One of the interesting developed tools to model the system parameters is the Generalized Table of Parameters (GTP). However, the GPT has not yet been integrated as an essential tool within TRIZ-based methods. In this article, we aim to develop a method to integrate the GTP in the inventive design process to extract the most important contradictions to be solved. To illustrate the presented method, the authors would apply the method to extract the prioritized problem to be solved of a mechanical shock absorber based on lattice structure within a particular mechanical field context.

Abstract

Design parameters are a crucial element of the product design process. However, design parameter models are often used to solve specific design problems. Generalizing design parameters is an approach to tackle more design problems. This study contributes to resolving certain limitations associated with modeling and representing the design parameters. This paper presents a generalized table of parameters (GTP) for modeling system parameters. This table is linked to a contextual database based on data and information collected from scientific databases, experts' interviews, and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element Modeling (FEM) software analysis and usage. The proposed representative table shows the robustness of integrating multiple sources of information to present a holistic and generalized view of the design system. The quality of the provided data in the table is assessed by applying certain evaluating dimensions and indicators. A case study will be presented on the lattice structure within a specific context in the mechanical field.

Abstract

This study proposes an evaluation framework to explore the solution concepts generated by inventive design approaches in the concept generation phase of the engineering design process. The concept generation phase significantly impacts producing inventive solutions, as a failure at this stage can lead to time-consuming redesign and expensive rework without any solution. The proposed framework is focused on solving two problems at this stage: first, how to represent a solution concept that is not an obvious product but rather a rough idea capable of guiding designers to produce inventive solutions. And second, how to analyze the solution concepts to evaluate and compare with others. The evaluation framework is based on the classical Gero's function, behavior, and structure product modeling formalism. The capability of the proposed evaluation framework is initially tested through its application to solution concepts generated by inventive design approaches like the Russian Theory of Inventive Problem Solving TRIZ.

Abstract

We focus on improving the performance of production machines (timesaving, flexibility, cost-effectiveness, safety) from the early design phase. Lean integration during the design phases might be a more appropriate solution, but this could be a source of some contradictions related to the machine performance and the usage requirements. In this paper, we propose an approach, based on Lean and Inventive Design Methodology (IDM-TRIZ), to identify and resolve these contradictions due to the Lean integration and also to provide innovative technical solutions. The approach is illustrated by the integration of the functionalities of the ''Single Minute of Exchange of Dies'' (SMED) and the ''5S'' method from the early design phase. A case study about the ''3D printer clogged nozzle'' outlines the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Abstract

TRIZ method has long proven its value without appearing to the industrial world as inevitable. Design researchers have therefore addressed the limitations of the TRIZ method and have overcome them with more systematic approaches. Among these, the Inventive Design Method (IDM) has been the subject of several articles and put into practice in the industry. It is considered an improvement over TRIZ but still suffers from some drawbacks in terms of the time-consuming nature of its implementation. We focused on the IDM process by trying to both identify its areas of inefficiencies while attempting to preserve the quality of its deliverables. Our approach consists of applying the precepts of Lean to IDM. The result is the Inverse Problem Graph (IPG) method, inspired by IDM, but offering significant progress in reducing the time required to mobilize experts while preserving its inventive outcomes. This article outlines our approach for the construction of this new method.

Abstract

Manufacturing needs more and more requirements (sustainability, agility, Industry 4.0 technologies, etc.) to meet customer demands. Nowadays, companies apply Lean tools to improve machines and systems performance in their use phase. Lean tools application on existing machines ensures some functionalities like (Reduce changeover time, eliminate wastes, Involve Human Skills, etc.). The purpose of this paper is to offer designers a design support method and tool to design a performant system (production system, machines, etc.) by integrating Lean functionalities from the early design phases, with a minimum of needs to improve the system in the use phase via Lean. For this purpose, we analyze the Lean principles and tools to identify functionalities provided by Lean. These functionalities are analyzed and classified to integrate them into the design of manufacturing systems in the context of Industry 4.0. A "Lean-System-Design" approach defines a systematic and detailed guide for the integration of Lean from the early design phase. We provide the software tool specifications, which represent the first steps of its implementation. We have illustrated our proposal with a case study on the design of a waste treatment machine.

Abstract

In this study tool life experiments were performed on Inconel 718 (IN718) alloy. The Inconel 718 samples were produced by conventional Cast and Wrought (C&W) and by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) techniques like Selective Laser Melting (SLM). The as-built SLM samples which were subjected to only Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) are labeled as SLM HIP and both Hot Isostatic Pressing and Aeronautic Heat Treatment are labeled as SLM HIP-AHT. The tool life machining tests were performed using PVD coated carbide insert under emulsion conditions. The surface integrity parameters such as surface roughness, residual stresses, and microhardness were evaluated. The wear mechanisms on the rake and flank faces of the PVD insert were characterized. It's deduced that notch and flank wear near the depth of the cutting zone were the predominant failure mode affecting the tool life. The age-hardened microstructural features of C&W and HIP heat-treated SLM samples have a negative impact on the tool life. Whereas the microstructure obtained by the SLM HIP-AHT sample indeed played an important role by exhibiting 26 % more tool life than SLM HIP samples and 79 % more tool life than the C&W sample.

Abstract

Engineering designers often adapt their design structure to the needs of functional requirements independently of the capacity of the designed technical system to offer innovative capacities. Based on the notion of contradiction brought from TRIZ theory (Russian acronym for theory of inventive problem solving), we have developed an approach to reversely build a parametric intelligent structure potentially solving a wide range of inventive problematic situations. The proposed structure relies on an elastic buckling instability. A parametric CAD (Computer-Aided Design) model of the structure was carried out and its behavior is studied with finite element analysis (FEA), driven by a design of experiments (DoE). In this article, a specific method of characterization and multi-objective optimization of the structure is offered. Our objective is to bring a method to allow an engineering designer to solve rapidly and inventively his contradictory requirement in adapting it to the industrial application sought for.

The contradictions of TRIZ are now widespread and recognized as an effective inventive design tool. They make it possible to find solution concepts to problems that cannot be solved by optimization approaches. However, many contradictions could be formulated and it could be difficult to choose the priority one. The authors propose here two methods to formulate the contradictions and identify the priority contradiction: an experimental approach on the one hand, and a multiphysics approach on the other hand. This analysis, illustrated through an example of 3D printing of parts, shows that these two approaches are similar in terms of result, and indeed make it possible to formulate contradictions taking into account all the complexity of a system. Abstract

International audience; This paper deals with the characterization, modelization and simulation of a composite structure used for MAV or generally for drones design. Composite structures are extremely difficult to simulate due to the anisotropic behaviour. The first part of the article is focused on carbon fiber/PVC foam (AIREX) sandwich composite characterization with the design of experiments method on tensile tests. This method gives equations, which describe the material mechanical behaviour (Young’s modulus, tensile strength) depending on factors values. The second part of the article deals with the improvement of mechanical simulation of an anisotropic material with the goal to get an accurate model and to generalised properties to an entire structure. Then, the macroscopic mechanical properties of the most performing sandwich will be obtained with the global composite behaviour matrix 6x6, in order to be integrated into a Finite Element Analysis software (CREO / Simulate) to simulate a fixed wing behaviour. Finally, comparisons between experiment and numerical simulation on the wing will give promising results, and simulations will reveal substantial differences between tension & compression in a flexural solicitation.

Abstract

International audience; L'objectif de cette étude est de caractériser les conditions de coupe au cours de l'usinage d'un matériau composite multicouches permettant d'éviter l'apparition des défauts (délaminage, échauffement de la résine et usure de l'outil de coupe) par analyse vibratoire. Un plan d'expériences composite centré de 20 essais a été défini pour les paramètres de coupe (vitesse de coupe Vc, profondeur de passe ap et avance par tour f). Les niveaux de vibrations (dans les trois directions à savoir x, y et z) ont été mesurés pour chaque essai. Les méthodes de régression linéaire (MRL) et de surface de réponses (RSM) ont permis de déterminer des modèles mathématiques utilisant les données expérimentales. Les résultats montrent une forte corrélation entre le niveau vibratoire relevé et l'apparition des défauts cités.

L'objectif de cette étude est de déterminer les paramètres de coupe optimaux en tournage d'un acier (100C6) par rapport à l'état de surface des pièces usinées et la productivité. Une combinaison de méthodes statistiques, analytiques et expérimentales a permis d'obtenir des modèles représentatifs des objectifs fixés. Des conditions optimales ont pu ainsi être déterminées en fonction de la stratégie d'usinage choisie, à l'aide d'un algorithme génétique d'optimisation combiné avec la méthode de sommes pondérées.
