5. Security analysis of a blockchain-based protocol for the certification of academic credentials

Abstract

We consider a blockchain-based protocol for the certification of academic credentials named Blockcerts, which is currently used worldwide for validating digital certificates of competence compliant with the Open Badges standard. We study the certification steps that are performed by the Blockcerts protocol to validate a certificate, and find that they are vulnerable to a certain type of impersonation attacks. More in detail, authentication of the issuing institution is performed by retrieving an unauthenticated issuer profile online, and comparing some data reported there with those included in the issued certificate. We show that, by fabricating a fake issuer profile and generating a suitably altered certificate, an attacker is able to impersonate a legitimate issuer and can produce certificates that cannot be distinguished from originals by the Blockcerts validation procedure. We also propose some possible countermeasures against an attack of this type, which require the use of a classic public key infrastructure or a decentralized identity system integrated with the Blockcerts protocol., 12 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

This paper is the result of a study promoted by the European Space Agency, aimed at research, design, development, and demonstration of a state-of-the-art receiver chain for telecommand (TC) links in space missions. The introduction of new, very powerful low-density parity-check codes for error correction, recently approved for the TC standard, allows to operate at significantly lower signal-to-noise ratios. This implies a number of challenges for the receivers in terms of frame synchronization, carrier acquisition, and tracking loops. Both the decoding and the receiver algorithms must be optimized as well, in view of permitting efficient hardware and software implementation, while ensuring excellent error rate performances. All these issues are faced in the present study through a fruitful co-operation between industry, research centers and universities. Abstract

This work presents an electrocardiogramECG data reduction method based on Walsh spectrum double logarithmic quantization. The technique is theoretically justified for a simulated ECG and its practical efficiency confirmed using MIT/BIH arrhythmia database signals. By classifying a 'good' compression as one with MSE [is less than or equal to] 0.005 for 1: I spectral reduction, a normal/abnormal ECG mix returned an 87% success rate for waveforms stored with 8- to 11-bit resolution. Abstract

International audience; We propose a new variant of the McEliece cryptosystem which ensures that the code used as the public key is not permutation-equivalent to the secret code. This allows to increase the security of the public key, and to reconsider possible adoption of classical families of codes, like Reed-Solomon codes. A reduction in the key size or, equivalently, an increased level of security against nformation set decoding are the main advantages of the modi ed cryptosystem. As a drawback, the domain of intentional error vectors must be restricted, but we show that this has no signi cant impact on the security level.

Abstract

The last decades have seen a growing interest in hash functions that allow some sort of tolerance, e.g. for the purpose of biometric authentication. Among these, the syndrome fuzzy hashing construction allows to securely store biometric data and to perform user authentication without the need of sharing any secret key. This paper analyzes such a model, showing that it offers a suitable protection against information leakage and several advantages with respect to similar solutions, like the fuzzy commitment scheme. The design and characterization of LDPC codes to be used for this purpose is also addressed.

Abstract

In this paper, we study the performance of telecommand space links affected by pulsed, continuous wave and pseudo-noise jamming. Countermeasures include coding, interleaving, and direct sequence spread spectrum. Binary and non-binary low-density parity-check codes, parallel turbo codes, and soft-decision decoded BCH codes are considered. We investigate the impact of different decoding algorithms, also taking into account the role of jamming state information, spreading processing gain and interleaving. Abstract

We investigate and compare, over the additive white Gaussian noise channel, different options for updating the error correcting code currently used in space mission telecommand links. Besides some more consolidated proposals, using low-density parity-check codes, we characterize and assess the performance of alternative schemes, based on parallel turbo codes and soft-decision decoded Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codes. The analysis considers relevant metrics like the codeword error rate, the frame error rate, and the undetected frame error rate. The considered codes include binary and non-binary low-density parity-check codes, parallel turbo codes and extended BCH codes, with different decoding algorithms. The complexity of the various schemes and possible limits for their application are considered and discussed. Several numerical examples are provided.
