Afin de mieux comprendre la portée des nouveautés artistiques introduites par Soutine, il faut développer le sujet de sa peinture en lien avec la portée de son travail vis-à-vis des artistes contemporains et avec l’histoire de la peinture. Nous entendons ainsi questionner par des recherches identitaires, en partant de l’œuvre de Soutine, les limites de la peinture en général, de la peinture aujourd’hui. S’agissant de ces limites, nous nous proposons d’abord d’accueillir la réponse de Soutine et, avec elle, son questionnement, dans la mesure où, comme pour tout peintre, ce questionnement porte essentiellement sur son origine, en interrogeant les limites de la peinture. Cette origine, qu’il faudrait nommer l’originaire, est ce qui avec l’image fait signe de manière imprévisible. C'est donc un passé qui demeure dans notre présent et qui, depuis son « origine » lointaine, touche à notre présent à la manière d'un symptôme L’interrogation sur l’origine toujours recommencée de la peinture nous apprend à percevoir ce qu’est la puissance de l’image picturale, l’autoprésentation de la figuration au-delà de la représentation, c’est-à-dire sa présence.

We report the case of a 41-year-old female who presented with left upper limb embolization due to primary thoracic aortic mural thrombus; this latter represented an uncommon condition with difficult diagnosis and a high rate of life-threatening complications. Upper extremities embolization is extremely rare because it usually occurs in the lower limbs. Management strategy is still controversial, and no clear guidelines indicate superiority of either conservative or invasive treatment approach to date. Our report illustrates how endovascular exclusion of thoracic aortic mural thrombus has the advantage to be a low-risk procedure that represents a definitive therapy.

Aims: The assessment of aortic stenosis (AS) severity is still challenging, especially in abnormal hemodynamic conditions. Left ventricular ejection time (LVET) has been historically related to AS severity, but it also depends on heart rate (HR) and systolic function. Our aim was to verify if correcting LVET (LVET index, LVETI) by its determinants is helpful for the assessment of AS severity, irrespective of hemodynamic conditions. Methods and results: We retrospectively studied 152 patients with AS and 378 patients with heart failure and no-AS. At multivariate analysis, LVET (assessed with pulsed-wave Doppler) showed a strong correlation with stroke volume index (SVI) (Beta 0.354; p < 0.001), HR (−0.385; p < 0.001), AS grade (Beta 0.301; p < 0.001) and, less significantly, ejection fraction (LVEF) (Beta 0.108; p = 0.001). AS grade was confirmed to be a major determinant of LVET, irrespective of forward flow (assessed by SVI and transvalvular flow rate) and LVEF (above and below 50%). A regression equation was derived to index LVET (LVETI) to HR and SVI. By using this formula, LVETI detected severe AS more accurately (AUC 0.812, p < 0.001) than LVET alone (AUC 0.755, p for difference = 0.005). Similar results were observed in patients with abnormal flow status. As an exploratory finding, we observed that the highest tertile of LVETI was associated with a higher rate of aortic valve interventions during follow-up. Conclusions: LVETI correlates with AS severity better than uncorrected LVET, independently from hemodynamic conditions, and may help to discriminate severe AS. This finding needs confirmation in larger prospective multicenter studies.

Background A careful assessment of a living donor is mandatory to minimize the short- and long-term risk related to kidney donation. In this study, we evaluated the incidence of incidental findings (IFs) in a large population of potential living kidney donors. Moreover, this study evaluated if the presence of IFs could influence the chance of living kidney donation and post-transplant outcomes. Methods One hundred and sixty consecutive potential prospective living kidney transplant donors, who underwent a multidetector computed tomography angiography (MDCTA), were included in the study. An IF was defined as an incidentally discovered mass or lesion, detected by computed tomography angiography during the imaging evaluation of potential living donors. Clinical outcomes of living donors with IF were compared with those without IF. Results In 10 patients (6.2%) an incidental finding was detected at MDCTA assessment. Among the 10 patients presenting with an IF, 7 patients (4.3%) were excluded from the living donation: 2 patients with an adrenal lesion, 3 patients with cancer, and 2 patients with a large (>8 cm) renal cyst. Graft and patient survival of kidney transplant recipients of donors with IFs were not significantly different to those receiving a kidney from living donors without IFs. Conclusions Incidental findings are frequently discovered during living kidney donor evaluation. Whereas most are asymptomatic or not clinically relevant, predonation screening could identify potentially life-threatening diseases at an earlier stage, allowing for a more radical treatment.

Transplant recipients have difficulty expressing, identifying, and describing their emotional experiences. The Machover human figure test allows us to bring out the deepest contents of a patient's personality, which are normally hidden and not explained to structured quantitative tests. The study analyzed possible situations of distress and possible symptoms of psychopathology in kidney transplant recipients, emerged from the projective test of the human figure and not easily verbalized to the common standardized tests. The sample included 80 kidney transplant patients (51 men and 29 women; mean age, 47.74 [SD, 12.39] years) during follow-up visits at 12 months after transplant. The Machover test was used to evaluate body image, affective aspects, and personality variables by projective method; the Symptom Checklist-90-R was used for the evaluation of possible psychopathology, and the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey was used for the assessment of perceived quality of life. RESULTS: showed that the more anxiety there is in the human figure test, the less somatization dimensions (ANX/SOM R = -331, P .05), depression (ANX/DEP R = -326, P .05), and the global index of psychic symptomatology (ANX/GSI R = -367, P .05) of the Symptom Checklist-90-R are present. This research has confirmed the hypothesis that the spontaneous graphic production of the recipients, through the projective methods, allows them to identify and deepen their psychological contents and to activate and maintain a good psychophysical balance post transplant.

Three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) represents one of the most innovative advances in cardiovascular imaging over the last 20 years. Recent technological developments have fueled the full implementation of 3DE in clinical practice and expanded its impact on patient diagnosis, management, and prognosis. One of the most important clinical applications of transthoracic 3DE has been the quantitation of cardiac chamber volumes and function. The main limitations affecting two-dimensional echocardiography calculations of chamber volumes (i.e. geometric assumptions about cardiac chamber shape and view foreshortening) are overcome by 3DE that allows an actual measurement of their volumes. Transesophageal 3DE has been applied mainly to assess the anatomy and function of heart valves, congenital defects and masses in the beating heart. As reparative cardiac surgery and transcatheter procedures have become more and more popular to treat structural heart disease, transesophageal 3DE has become not only one of the main imaging modalities for procedure planning but also for intra-procedural guidance and assessment of procedural results. New image rendering modalities such as 3D printing, holographic display, and fusion of 3DE images with other radiological or nuclear modalities will further expand the clinical applications and indications of 3DE.

Cet article souhaite prendre en considération l’hypothèse que la postérité des analyses phénoménologiques liées à l’art contemporain ne réside pas simplement dans une approche esthétique et perceptive de l’œuvre. Autrement dit, notre hypothèse consiste en une approche perceptive qui ne peut pas se séparer de son contexte éthique, social, politique, historique. Ce numéro de RadaR permet d’envisager la notion d’immersion comme pouvant être constitutive de la notion contemporaine de communauté et notre objectif, en partant de l’immersion, sera de penser dans ce contexte la possibilité d’une approche phénoménologique de l’œuvre d’art en prenant en considération le paradigme de notre perception et de notre corporéité comme constitutifs des changements de notre époque.

Background: The World Alliance Societies of Echocardiography (WASE) Normal Values Study evaluates individuals from multiple countries and races with the aim of describing normative values that could be applied to the global community worldwide and to determine differences and similarities among people from different countries and races. The present report focuses specifically on two-dimensional (2D) left ventricular (LV) dimensions, volumes, and systolic function. Methods: The WASE Normal Values Study is a multicenter international, observational, prospective, cross-sectional study of healthy adult individuals. Participants recruited in each country were evenly distributed among six predetermined subgroups according to age and gender. Comprehensive 2D transthoracic echocardiograms were acquired and analyzed following strict protocols based on recent American Society of Echocardiography and European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging guidelines. Analysis was performed at the WASE 2D core laboratory and included 2D LV dimensions, LV volumes, and LV ejection fraction (LVEF) by the biplane Simpson method and global longitudinal strain (GLS). Results: Two thousand eight subjects were enrolled in 15 countries. The median age was 45 years (interquartile range, 32–65 years), 42.8% were white, 41.8% were Asian, and 9.7% were black. LV dimensions and volumes were larger in male subjects, while LVEF and GLS were higher in female subjects. Global WASE normal ranges for LV dimensions were smaller than those in the guidelines, but the upper limits of normal for LV volumes and the lower limits of normal for LVEF were higher in the WASE study. Significant intercountry variation was identified for all LV parameters reflecting LV size (dimensions, mass, and volumes) even after indexing to body surface area, with LV end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes having the highest variation. The largest volumes were noted in Australia, while the smallest were measured in India for both genders. This finding suggests that in addition to gender and body surface area, specific country should be considered when evaluating LV volumes. Intercountry variation for LVEF and GLS was smaller but still statistically significant (P < .05 for all). Conclusions: LV dimensions and volumes are larger in men, while LVEF and GLS are higher in women. Current guideline-recommended normal ranges for LV volumes and LVEF should be adjusted. Intercountry variability is significant for LV volumes, and therefore nationality should be considered for defining ranges of normality.

Vascular calcification has been recently associated to an increased cardiovascular risk and mortality. In few studies, Fetuin-A showed an association to coronary artery calcification (CAC), although the physiopathological mechanism underlying this association has not been fully established yet. Seventy-four patients with one or more cardiovascular risk factor and asymptomatic for coronary vasculopathy were included in the study. CAC was evaluated by Agatston score. Serum Fetuin-A levels were determined by ELISA. Molecular analysis of AHSG T256S gene variant (rs4918) was performed by PCR-RFLP. Serum Fetuin-A was correlated to serum calcium (r = 0,321; P = 0,018), but not to serum phosphorous. Multivariate linear regression analysis confirmed this association and showed that calcium and AHSG genotype were independent predictors of Fetuin-A (P = 0.037, P = 0.014, respectively). In particular, subjects carrying the SS genotype had lower levels of Fetuin-A and calcium (P = 0.037 and P = 0.038, respectively). The domain of cooking has offshoots in all directions that run right through the infrastructure of our society, and it is by choosing such a limited field of study that we may clearly observe the range of its influence, as well as the changes and movements that it operates on other approaches. Aesthetics would appear to be the soil in which a philosophy of cooking can bloom by virtue of the unalterable link attributed – albeit unconsciously - between cooking and art, notably through Immanuel Kant’s metaphor of the judgment of taste in the eighteenth century. To dissolve the theory and practice of dualism, the present study first traces its mutations so as to understand how it was transmitted. Secondly, the theoretical aspect of philosophy and the practicality of cooking will be combined using the phenomenological method of MerleauPonty. The need to consider the domain of cooking outside of a defined concept invites us to rethink the concept of philosophy itself as a breaking-up of duality. The opening referred to by Merleau-Ponty to talk about art characterizes the attitude we need to adopt regarding the status of the concept of “cuisine”. This research will also highlight the cook's commitment as a true intermediary between the producer and the consumer. The multi-faceted object of cooking will be considered in its ethical and political dimension, notably through the ambiguity of the concept of terroir. Describing sometimes a typicity of soil, sometimes highlighted by a truly human know-how, the terroir will be a central concept to question the filiation of nature with the culture at work in the process of patrimonialisation. In a third moment, the future of the culinary art will be questioned just as if it were a contemporary art. The artistic status of cookery will be analyzed through case studies where cooks find themselves identified as artists, thereby explaining the choice of the Cookbook exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Paris, or the El Bulli restaurant in Rosas, Spain. We will question how far or how close the relationship is between art and cooking with reference to chefs who chose (or not) to meet the selection criteria in guidebooks by subscribing to the race for the stars of La Grande Cuisine. Finally, we will cross a critical threshold where we ask whether in fact an objective critique can be made of French gastronomy, considering the elitist environment in which it is steeped.; La cuisine possède des ramifications qui parcourent toutes les infrastructures de notre société, et c’est en choisissant un domaine limité qu’on observe clairement son étendue, les modifications et les mouvements qu’elle opère sur les autres approches. Nous franchirons enfin un palier critique où nous nous demanderons si la gastronomie française peut être dotée d’une critique objective dans un milieu élitiste.
