Introduction. College students live a crucial period of transition from late adolescence to adulthood when they have to deal with important stressful tasks. Thus, university often represents a stressful environment, pushing students to cope with a high academic pressure. As a result, this period constitutes a sensitive age for the onset of mental disorders. Typically, students are not aware of the early signs of their own compromised mental health until symptoms aggravate to an overt disorder. Therefore, it is important to timely detect subthreshold symptoms mostly related to generic mental distress. Objective. First, to assess psychophysical well-being and mental distress among college students in northern Italy, and to detect predictors, among socio-demographic and academic characteristics, and risky drug use of these two outcomes. Method. The study involved 13,886 students who received an email explaining the purpose of the e-research. The questionnaires used were the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), the University Stress Scale (USS), and a modified version of World Health Organization-ASSIST v3.0. Results. 3,754 students completed the web-survey. Students showed poor well-being and mental distress. The strongest predictor of mental distress and compromised well-being was physical health, followed by sex, study field, risky drug use, and academic performance concerns. Discussion and conclusion. This study shows that it is very important to promote in college students healthy behaviors in order to increase their physical exercise and reduce substance use. Moreover, it would be desirable to improve academic counselling facilities as an important front-line service to intercept mental health issues among young adults.

The aim of this study was to assess the therapeutic effectiveness of biofeedback, in a medical center’s routine for treating vestibular disorders, reducing emotional, functional, and physical disability at three-month follow-up. A total of 197 outpatients were recruited from a medical center to treat vestibular disorders. Patients in the control group received treatment as usual, consisting of one monthly visit with an otolaryngologist and pharmacological treatment specific for vertigo, while the experimental group attended biofeedback training. Patients in the experimental group received pharmacological therapy only in the phase before the start of biofeedback in order to stabilize the acute phase. During the three-month follow-up, the experimental group did not receive any booster sessions of biofeedback. At three-month follow-up there was a statistically significant difference between the groups, both in the mean total score of the dizziness handicap inventory and in the three subscales: physical, emotional, and functional. Moreover, the biofeedback group had reduced psycho-physiological parameters for all average values at three-month follow-up compared to the baseline. This is one of few studies assessing the effectiveness of biofeedback in a naturalistic setting for vestibular disorder treatment. The data confirmed that biofeedback can impact illness course, in terms of self-perceived disability reduction, assessed on emotional, functional, and physical aspects of daily living.

College students have poorer mental health than their peers. Their poorer health conditions seem to be caused by the greater number of stressors to which they are exposed, which can increase the risk of the onset of mental disorders. The pandemic has been an additional stressor that may have further compromised the mental health of college students and changed their lifestyles with important consequences for their well-being. Although research has recognized the impact of COVID-19 on college students, only longitudinal studies can improve knowledge on this topic. This review summarizes the data from 17 longitudinal studies examining changes in mental health and lifestyle among college students during the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to improve understanding of the effects of the outbreak on this population. Following PRISMA statements, the following databases were searched PubMed, EBSCO, SCOPUS and Web of Science. The overall sample included 20,108 students. The results show an increase in anxiety, mood disorders, alcohol use, sedentary behavior, and Internet use and a decrease in physical activity. Female students and sexual and gender minority youth reported poorer mental health conditions. Further research is needed to clarify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on vulnerable subgroups of college students.The online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s40894-022-00192-7.

Despite the actual availability of COVID-19 vaccines to combat the pandemic, many people are still vacillating in their decision to vaccinate. In this study, we considered the effect of two relevant contextual issues on vaccination intention: the number of people infected with COVID-19 is increasing, and the pace of vaccination is gaining speed. Specifically, we hypothesized that having already contracted SARS-CoV-2 (post-positive reluctance) could lead people to underestimate the importance of vaccination. Moreover, as the number of vaccinated people increases, more hesitant people could fall into the free-riding intention category, benefitting from the immunity provided by others' vaccinations. Vaccine hesitancy becomes more critical as the vaccination campaign proceeds: at one point, it will be inevitable to deal with hesitant people. This study is part of a WHO Regional Office for Europe project and involved a representative sample of 5006 Italians interviewed in January-February 2021. In case of post-positive reluctance, both young age and female gender increase vaccine hesitancy, while a high level of education reduces free-riding intention. Considering post-positive reluctance and free riding, a protective effect on hesitancy is associated with negative affective states, adherence to protective behaviors, trust in health information sources, and resilience. In contrast, increased vaccine hesitancy is associated with a high level of conspiracy-mindedness and trust in media information sources. Recognizing and studying the post-positive reluctance and the phenomenon of free-riding people can help us to become more efficient in combatting the virus.

This study is based on a multi-centered RCT conducted on breast cancer patients during their first consultation with an oncologist. The main aim was to evaluate whether the introduction of a communication tool (i.e., the Question Prompt Sheet or Question Listing), with or without a companion, impacted the number of questions asked by patients during the consultation, and subsequent psychological and relational outcomes.The sample consisted of 324 breast cancer patients who were randomly placed into one of the two intervention groups: Question Prompt Sheet or Question Listing. Before and after the consultation, patients completed a set of standardized instruments: Satisfaction with decisions made during the consultation (SWD), Shared Decision Making Questionnaire (SDMQ-9), Patient Enablement Instrument (PEI), Patient Health Questionnaire Depression scale (PHQ-9), General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12).The results indicate that the number of questions asked during the consultation was higher when a Question Listing was provided and when the patient was unaccompanied. Unaccompanied patients asked more questions in both groups and had significantly lower scores than accompanied on the GHQ-12 and on the PHQ-9, indicating lower clinical symptomatology.Results are in contrast with previous literature, indicating that being unaccompanied help patients to interact more with the oncologist. Further studies are needed to evaluate how the presence or not of a companion really impacts breast cancer patients during their first consultation with an oncologist.ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01510964.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the effectiveness of a university counselling service in Northern Italy, to assess the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of students who used counselling service, and to assess the psychological conditions of the students who ended the counselling after a 4 month follow-up period. The study involved 100 students, who filled out the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), the Brief COPE Inventory, and the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R). The results showed that who received counselling were positively affected by this experience. The areas of benefit were psychological well-being, coping behaviours, ability to positively reframe problems and less sense of guilt. Additional studies are needed to identify which factors influence the outcomes of university counselling services in Italy. These studies would be important to evaluate the services rendered, upgrade the skills of counsellors and visualise priority areas of need.

Background: College counselling can be considered as a front-line service in detecting and managing mental health issues within young adults. In this sense, it is important to investigate the effectiveness of counselling interventions. Objective: To provide a systematic review about college counselling in Italy; to assess which psychological interventions really meet student needs, and their effectiveness; to focus on the level of cohesion between Italian counselling services and the international guidelines about college counselling. Method: A systematic review about college counselling through PsycInfo and PubMed was carried out. Because of the scarceness of pertinent available articles, the survey was extended to Google Scholar and Riviste Web. Keywords: counselling, mental health, wellbeing, psychological support, university, students, Italy. Results: Out of thirty-four articles retrieved, 16 are relevant to academic counselling, the other 18 have been considered not pertinent to the aim of the present review. Data show a lack of homogeneity in methodology and organization between each University: different approaches towards students’ needs. Furthermore, no follow-up studies or measurement of effectiveness were found. Conclusion: This review is a contribution to disseminate the results of counselling experiences in Italy and represents an effort to encourage colleagues working in a web environment to share results and methods for a more organized protocol application.

Medical students encounter specific stressors that can lead to higher levels of psychological distress compared to their similar aged counterparts who study other subjects. The Medical Student Stressor Questionnaire (MSSQ) was developed to specifically identify stressors among medical students as well as measure the intensity of stress caused by the stressors. However, no Italian version has been validated to date. The aim of this study was to develop an Italian version of the MSSQ (MSSQ-I) and to assess its psychometric properties. The MSSQ has been translated and culturally validated into Italian. All medical students from the University of Brescia were asked to participate in a web-survey in which they were asked to complete the MSSQ-I. For the analysis of the stability over time, participating students were asked to complete again the MSSQ-I after about one month. Among 1754 medical students, 964 completed the MSSQ-I for the validation analyses. A first Confirmatory Factor Analysis and a subsequent Explanatory Factor Analysis outlined a slightly modified factor structure of the scale with five factors instead of six as in the original scale. The internal consistency on the overall scale was high (α = 0.94), as well as the internal consistency of each of the new factors: (α > 0.83 for the first four factors and α = 0.67 for the fifth). External validity analysis confirmed moderate/high concurrent validity. These results suggest that the MSSQ-I can be used as a tool to identify stressors among Italian medical students, although further research is needed to confirm its individual test-retest reliability.

This study assessed the effect of a question prompt sheet (QPS) on the oncologist-patient relationship as compared with a question listing (QL). In particular, the differences in difficulties perceived by the oncologist during the consultation and in the patient’s experience of the therapeutic aspects of the relationship were assessed. A total of 324 patients with a recent diagnosis of early stage breast cancer were involved in the study. The results showed that 15.7% of patients were perceived as ‘difficult’ by the oncologists. The proportion of ‘difficult’ patients varied in the two groups: 20.6% in the QPS group versus 11.8% in the QL group. The results also showed that the higher the difficulty perceived by oncologists, the lower the satisfaction of patients for their relationship with the oncologists during the consultation (r = − .135, p = .033). It is likely that the higher level of difficulty perceived by the oncologist in the QPS group may be connected with the pre-prepared list of evidence-based questions. Further research is needed to understand which components of the interventions, relating to the patient, the oncologist or their interaction, really promote patient participation in cancer setting. The objectives of this study are to identify all studies for stress-management carried out in medical students, in order to analyze their impact on psychological distress and on academic performance, and to assess how these interventions are incorporated into the medical education curriculum. For this purpose, a systematic narrative review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. A systematic search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and PsycInfo, using the following keywords: “stress” AND (“intervention” OR “treatment”) AND (“college” OR “university”) AND “medical” AND “student.” The quality of study was assessed using the Cochrane quality assessment tool and the Methodological Index for Nonrandomized Studies. Seventeen studies were included in the review: 3 randomized controlled trials and 14 non-randomized. The results have identified different stress-management interventions, mainly focused on mindfulness programs. Most studies were also carried out on the pre-clinical students in the first 2 years. Results showed that students who attended stress-management interventions had a decrease in their stress level; conversely, the data concerning the decrease in depression scores were contrasting. Findings suggest that stress-management programs may be helpful for medical students, but further studies are needed to assess a broader range of outcomes, including the correlation of stress-reduction with academic and health conditions. Aims: The aims of the present study were to assess: the effectiveness of psychoeducation in mental health service (MHSs) in terms of time to first hospitalization during 4-year follow-up; the number and the days of hospitalizations, and the number of people hospitalized at 4-year follow-up; and variables associated with better outcome in BD patients. Methods: This is a controlled study involving an experimental group (N = 57) and a control group (N = 52). The treatment phase consists of 21 weeks, in which all participants received TAU, while the experimental group received additional psychoeducation. Results: The survival analysis showed significant differences in terms of time to first hospitalization of up to 4-year follow-up: the patients in the psychoeducation group showed a longer time free from hospitalizations than the control group. Concerning the predictors of time to first hospitalization, the only factor that showed a trend to statistical significance was psychoeducation. Conclusions: This is one of few studies assessing the long-term effectiveness of psychoeducation in a naturalistic setting. The data confirm that psychoeducation can impact illness course, in terms of longer time free from hospitalizations. Trial registration: ISRCTN17827459.

The aims of this study were to collect information about attitudes toward mental illness from the staff of Brescia University, and to detect predictors of issues regarding mental disorders and evaluate their relationship with public stigma. The study involved 1079 people and each participant received a letter explaining the purpose of the e-research. Four hundred and eighty-six people completed the questionnaires. The results showed that those who had a higher level of education, a personal life experience with mental disorders and a higher professional role were more likely to develop behaviours of acceptance toward the mentally ill. Factor analysis of the CAMI showed three main factors: Social distance and isolation, Social integration, Social responsibility and tolerance. Through the structural equation model it was found that the latent construct stigma was mainly defined by the first factor. From this study it emerged that education and personal contact were protective factors against public stigma.

Objective (1) To report the number and type of emotional expressions (cues/concerns) raised by breast cancer patients; (2) to identify the influence of setting, patient characteristics, and doctor-patient interaction on emotional expression. Methods 308 Italian-speaking female patients were recruited at their first breast cancer consultation. The visits were audio-recorded and analysed for number and type of emotional expressions (VR-CoDES). Oncologists’ interaction skills were rated by the VR-COPE. Socio-demographic, clinical and personality variables were gathered before the consultation. Clinical variables and oncologists’ evaluations of the patient were collected after. Results Breast cancer patients raised emotional issues mainly as cues. The setting (centre where the consultations took place), the oncologist’s attribution of anxiety, regardless of anxiety test screening (STAI-X1) score before the consultation, and the oncologist’s ability to pick up on patient’s worries, handle emotional needs or understand psychosocial condition were all positively related with the number of emotional expressions. More tightly structured consultations had fewer emotional expressions. Conclusion Both contextual and interactional aspects have an impact on patient emotional expressions. Practice implications Oncologists need to be trained to manage both the content and the process of medical consultation. Work organization of the consultation setting needs to be taken into account.

L’attrazione sessuale, da sempre considerata sinonimo dell’orientamento sessuale, raramente e stata trattata come un fenomeno che meritasse di essere studiato in modo indipendente. Questo studio parte dalla considerazione che attrazione sessuale e orientamento sessuale sono costrutti autonomi e che, di conseguenza, la valutazione separata dell’attrazione sessuale potrebbe avere importanti ricadute sia in ambito clinico che di ricerca. Per indagare l’attrazione sessuale e stato utilizzato un questionario multidimensionale - il Questionario sull’Attrazione Sessuale - di cui si propone l’adattamento italiano su una popolazione adulta. I risultati di questo studio mostrano che il questionario gode di buone qualita psicometriche e che risulta essere un utile strumento in grado di promuovere una maggiore comprensione scientifica e una piu profonda valutazione clinica dei processi individuali coinvolti nell’attrazione sessuale.

Recent reviews of evidence-based guidelines for the clinical management of Bipolar Disorders (BD) have recommended that "all patients with BD be offered group or individual psychoeducation" to prevent relapse, improve treatment adherence, quality of life, and functioning. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of psychoeducation in routine mental health services in reducing number of hospitalisations and number of days spent in hospital, at a 1-year follow-up.A total of 102 outpatients were recruited from two Italian Departments of Mental Health. Inclusion criteria were a lifetime BD type I or II diagnosis, assessed with SCID, and ≥ 3 months of euthymia. Exclusion criteria were DSM-IV Axis I comorbidity, mental retardation (IQ70), organic brain damage, or deafness. All participants received standard psychiatric care, including standard pharmacological treatment; the experimental group also received 21 group psychoeducation sessions, weekly held and conducted according to Colom and Vieta's model.The number of patients hospitalised during the 1-year follow-up, the mean number of hospitalisations per patient, and the mean number of hospitalisation days were significantly lower for psychoeducated patients.Our findings support the view that group psychoeducation is an effective way to prevent hospitalisation and decrease hospital days in pharmacologically treated patients with bipolar disorder also in routine clinical settings. The results confirm that psychoeducation promotes improvement in illness course by preventing acute phases and enhancing mood stability, and consequently, improvement in the quality of life for people with BD.

ObjectivesTo investigate, prior to an oncology consultation, the use of a pre-prepared list of evidence based questions, Question Prompt Sheet (QPS), compared with a Question List (QL), a patient self-generated list of questions.DesignMulti-centred, randomised controlled trial.SettingSecondary-care patients attending three outpatient oncology clinics in Northern Italy.Participants308 women completed the study. Inclusion criteria were an age between 18 and 75 years, a recent diagnosis of early stage, non-metastatic breast cancer, adequate Italian language skills, no previous oncology visits and no evidence of cognitive impairment.InterventionPatients received the QPS or the QL prior to the consultation, completed it without suggestion or coaching session and delivered back before the visit.The consultations were audio-recorded and analysed for the number and content of questions. Multilevel linear models were used to compare the two groups.Outcome measuresThe primary outcome was the comparison of questions asked between QPS and QL group. Secondary outcomes included satisfaction about questions asked, satisfaction with decision, and level of anxiety.ResultsPatients in the QPS and QL group asked 13 and 16 questions respectively. The difference was not significant (b=1.7, CI –0.3 to 3.6, p=0.10). A mean of 22 questions was selected in the QPS, while a mean of 2 questions was written in the QL. SummaryAims – The aim of the present work is to analyse employers' and employees' attitudes towards the job integration of people with mental illness or disability and to highlight the socio-demographic and organizational characteristic that are more significantly associated with such attitudes. Method – We performedPsycINFO, AskERIC and Medlinesearches for studies published from 1961 to 2002, with key words such asattitudes, stigma, schizophrenia, mental illness, disability, employers, employees, co-workers and supported employment. Results – Our review of the literature showed that the possibility for people with severe mental illness or disability to enter job market is limited by the discriminating attitudes of employers. The socio-demographic and organizational characteristics, which are more significantly associated with employers' more positive attitudes, are: dimension of the company, previous positive contact with people with disability and employers' high educational level. Conclusions – Such information could be useful to identify and, perhaps, select those companies, which can be predicted as more likely to accept people with mental disorders as part of their work force; they could also be used to train job applicants to improve their social skills. People with severe mental disorders and a history of violence are often seen as a difficult-to-manage segment of the population. In addition, this group is usually characterized by a high risk of crime recidivism, and poor compliance with community and aftercare programs. To investigate a sample of male patients living in Residential Facilities (RFs) with a history of violent behavior against people and to compare their characteristics with those of never-violent residents; to analyze the associations between aggressive behaviors in the last two years and a history of previous violence; and, to assess the predictors of aggressive behaviors. This study is part of a prospective observational cohort study which involved 23 RFs in Northern Italy. A comprehensive set of sociodemographic, clinical, and treatment-related information was gathered, and standardized assessments were administered to each participant. Also a detailed assessment of aggressive behaviors in the past two years was carried out. The study involved 268 males: 81 violent and 187 never-violent. Compared to never-violent patients, violent patients were younger, with a higher proportion of personality disorders, and have displayed an increased number of aggressive behaviors in the last two years. The presence of a history of violent behavior in the past significantly increases the probability of committing aggressive acts in the future.

ResumenLa estigmatización del paciente psiquiátrico es todavía una fuerte barrera para el proceso de integración de estos sujetos en nuestra sociedad. Por tanto, es necesario identificar qué tipos de prejuicios existen y los tipos de variables con los que se asocian, para planear estrategias para reducirlos. En este estudio exploratorio administramos una entrevista semiestructurada a 303 sujetos para examinar las relaciones entre las actitudes sociales hacia los trastornos mentales y algunas variables demográficas sociales, la información sobre los trastornos mentales y los “contactos” previos con los pacientes psiquiátricos. El análisis de datos muestra que hay una relación entre el conocimiento de los pacientes psiquiátricos y una actitud más positiva hacia ellos (es decir, menos temor, más integración y oportunidades laborales). Este estudio se debe considerar preliminar en lo que se refiere a las actitudes de las personas hacia los pacientes psiquiátricos. Este resultado anima a la planificación y puesta en práctica de programas de sensibilización e información con respecto a los trastornos mentales, en el sentido de que aumentar el conocimiento de los trastornos mentales podría llevar a logros significativos en la importante lucha contra el estigma que rodea a los pacientes psiquiátricos.

SummaryThe stigmatisation of the psychiatric patient is still a strong barrier to the integration process of these subjects in our society. Therefore, it is necessary to identify what types of prejudices exist and the types of variables with which they are linked, in order to plan strategies to reduce them. In this exploratory study we administered a semi-structured interview to 303 subjects in order to examine the relationships between social attitudes towards mental disorders and some social demographic variables, the information about mental disorders and the previous ‘contacts’ with psychiatric patients.The data analysis shows that there is a relationship between knowledge of psychiatric patients and a more positive attitude towards them (i.e., less fear, more integration and work opportunities). This study is to be considered preliminary as far as people’s attitudes towards psychiatric patients are concerned. This result encourages the planning and implementation of sensitisation and information programs concerning mental disorders, in the sense that increasing the knowledge of mental disorders could lead to significant achievements in the important fight against the stigma surrounding psychiatric patients.

A growing number of severely ill patients require long-term care in non-hospital residential facilities (RFs). Despite the magnitude of this development, longitudinal studies surveying fairly large resident samples and yielding important information on this population have been very few. The aims of the study were (1) to describe the socio-demographic, clinical, and treatment-related characteristics of RF patients during an index period in 2010; (2) to identify predictors and characteristics associated with discharge at the 1-year follow-up; (3) to evaluate clinicians’ predictions about each patient’s likelihood of home discharge (HD). A prospective observational cohort study was conducted involving all patients staying in 23 medium-long-term RFs of the St John of God Order with a primary psychiatric diagnosis. A comprehensive set of socio-demographic, clinical, and treatment-related information was gathered and standardized assessments (BPRS, HONOS, PSP, PHI, SLOF, RBANS) were administered to each participant. Logistic regression analyses were run to identify independent discharge predictors. The study involved 403 patients (66.7 % male), with a mean age of 49 years (SD = 10). The participants’ average illness duration was 23 years; median value for length of stay in the RF was 2.2 years. The most frequent diagnosis was schizophrenia (67.5 %). 104 (25.8 %) were discharged: 13.6 % to home, 8.2 % to other RFs, 2.2 % to supported housing, and 1.5 % to prison. Clinicians’ predictions about HD were generally erroneous. Very few patients were discharged to independent accommodations after 1 year. Introduction Studies on patient involvement show that physicians make few attempts to involve their patients who ask few questions if not facilitated. On the other hand, the patients who participate in the decision-making process show greater treatment adherence and have better health outcomes. Different methods to encourage the active participation during oncological consultation have been described; however, similar studies in Italy are lacking. The aims of the present study are to (1) assess the effects of a preconsultation intervention to increase the involvement of breast cancer patients during the consultation, and (2) explore the role of the attending companions in the information exchange during consultation. Methods and analysis All female patients with breast cancer who attend the Oncology Out-patient Services for the first time will provide an informed consent to participate in the study. They are randomly assigned to the intervention or to the control group. The intervention consists of the presentation of a list of relevant illness-related questions, called a question prompt sheet. The primary outcome measure of the efficacy of the intervention is the number of questions asked by patients during the consultation. Secondary outcomes are the involvement of the patient by the oncologist; the patient9s perceived achievement of her information needs; the patient9s satisfaction and ability to cope; the quality of the doctor–patient relationship in terms of patient-centeredness; and the number of questions asked by the patient9s companions and their involvement during the consultation. All outcome measures are supposed to significantly increase in the intervention group. Ethics and dissemination The study was approved by the local Ethics Committee of the Hospital Trust of Verona. The negative attitudes surrounding mental disorders and their treatment are a major obstacle to the correct identification and treatment of emerging psychopathologies. The purpose of this study was to investigate mental health literacy in a large and representative sample of high school students in Italy, via a booklet containing several questionnaires delivered to 1032 teenagers. The items in the questionnaires probed knowledge about mental health and illness, stigmatization, stereotypes, behaviors, opinions, and attitudes. In general, the students had a reasonable knowledge of mental disorders and were able to distinguish these from somatic disorders. However, a large portion of the students nourished some misconceptions about mental disorders and was also rather skeptical about the effectiveness of treatment or the chance of recovery for people with severe mental disorders. Nevertheless, roughly half of the students reported being willing to provide help to someone with a mental disorder when in need. Poor mental health literacy is a major barrier to seeking help and receiving effective treatment. Young people are the ideal target of raising awareness and antistigma campaigns because they are at a higher risk for developing a psychopathology.

Introduction: scientific evidences show that psychotic disorders come to the treatment a few years after their onset, when the symptoms have stabilized. There are many factors responsible for this delay, including the role played by stigma, which often hinders an early identification of symptoms. Materials and e methods: a study was conducted in two high schools in a northern Italian town, through a questionnaire that assesses the attitudes towards people suffering from psychosis. Results : 408 students were enrolled in the study: 57.8% male and 42.2% female. Only 8.6% of the students believe that effective therapies for the treatment of people with psychosis exist, and only 16.4% states that most of them can recover or improve. 61.3% report that people with psychosis should be treated in hospitals for a long time. Conclusions : the results show that students have negative attitudes towards people suffering from psychosis, in particular as regards the treatment. For this reason it’s important to promote public actions, of sensitization and information, in order to increase the knowledge about current model of community-based care for the treatment of these disorders and their possible positive outcome.

SUMMARYAims— To describe patterns of experienced andanticipated discrimination in a sample of schizophrenic patients recruited in Italy in the context of the International Study of Discrimination and Stigma Outcomes (INDIGO).Methods— Cross-sectional survey on a sample of 50 people with clinical diagnosis of schizophrenia recruited in the Italian INDIGO sites of Verona and Brescia. The 41-item interview-based Discrimination and Stigma Scale (DISC-10), which assesses how experienced and anticipated discrimination affects the life of people with schizophrenia, was used.Results— The most frequently occurring areas of experienced discrimination were discrimination by family members (44%), making and keeping friends (33%), keeping (36%) and finding a job (34%), getting or keeping a driving licence (32%). Anticipated discrimination was common in applying for work, training or education (58%), lookingfor close relationships (50%) and doing something important (48%); 68% felt the need to conceal their diagnosis. Positive experiences were rare, and getting welfare benefits/disability pensions was the only area where participants reported being treated with advantage (34%) more commonly than with disadvantage (8%). Overall, experienced discrimination reported by Italian patients was in the intermediate position of the score range of all INDIGO sites, whereas anticipated discrimination was lower than that reported in the other countries.Conclusions— Interventions to reduce discrimination against people with schizophrenia may need to address both actual and anticipated discrimination. Targeted therapeutic strategies aiming to improve self-esteem of people with schizophrenia may be usefulto facilitate their social participation and full inclusion in the community.Declaration of Interest: The authors declare they have not competing interests.

Negli ultimi anni si e accresciuto l’interesse delle neuroscienze per lo studio dei processi biologici che sottendono le emozioni, nel tentativo di giungere ad una sempre piu esaustiva conoscenza del complesso funzionamento della mente umana. Anche per quanto riguarda la sessualita, ed in particolare l’attrazione sessuale, sono stati compiuti numerosi studi che si sono posti come obiettivo l’individuazione dei correlati anatomo-fisiologici coinvolti. Sebbene, tuttavia, la biologia abbia compiuto molti progressi nella comprensione di quali sostanze chimiche si attivino e di quali zone del cervello siano coinvolte nei processi di attrazione sessuale, molto ancora rimane da scoprire. Ancora inevase rimangono pertanto alcune domande: Perche itsiamo sessualmente attratti da alcuni individui e non da altri? Quali sono i processi psichici che attivano l ’attrazione sessuale? Le attrazioni erotico-sessuali sono omologabili a quelle interpersonali?

The Sexual Attraction Questionnaire (SAQ) was designed to measure sexual attraction (Fernández, Quiroga, & Rodríguez, 2006), because the current questionnaires were considered inadequate. The purpose of this research was to test whether the SAQ factors remain meaningful after several years (stability) and whether the Italian version is equivalent to the Spanish one (consistency). Three groups of university students participated: two from Spain (n = 182 and 255, respectively) and one from Italy (n = 293). The Spanish groups were tested with a 7-year interval (2001-2008). The Italian group was tested in 2008. The main hypotheses were to test, across time interval and countries: (a) factor congruence, (b) predictive power of factors (proportion of variance accounted for), and (c) scale reliability. Sexual attraction typology also was analyzed, within and between countries, to test the validity of the underlying theoretical model. The results obtained show that the SAQ factor structure remains the same, the resulting factors have high predictive power, and the SAQ scales are highly reliable. Sexual dimorphism and sexual attraction typology are highly associated, thus validating the underlying theoretical model.

Background Recent studies on representative samples of psychiatric services have shown that low proportions of cases received effective rehabilitation interventions. The following are likely to be the most important causes: the scarcity of mental health workers trained in social and work skills strategies and the absence of a structured framework to formulate rehabilitation practices. The aim of this study was to assess if a specific structured planning and evaluation manual, called VADO (Valutazione delle Abilità e Definizione degli Obiettivi – in english: Skills Assessment and Definition of Goals), is more effective than routine interventions in reducing disability in patients with schizophrenia. Method Each of 10 mental health services were invited to recruit 10 patients with a schizophrenic disorder. Altogether 98 patients were recruited. Of these, 62 patients were randomly allocated to the intervention/experimental or a control group. The remaining group of 36 patients was not randomised and it was considered as a parallel effectiveness study. Assessment measures at the beginning of the study and at the one-year follow-up included the FPS scale of social functioning and the BPRS 4.0. Between group (VADO vs. Routine) and time effects were examined with ANOVA, Chi-square or Fisher exact. Clinical "improvement" was defined as an increase of at least ten points on the FPS or a decrease of at least 20% on BPRS scores. Results 31 of the 62 randomized patients received the experimental interventions, while 31 followed the routine ones. At follow-up, the experimental group showed statistically and clinically greater improvements in psychopathology and social functioning. Better outcomes of both social functioning and symptom severity were observed in non randomised patients (parallel effectiveness study). Conclusion The results suggest that setting personalised and measurable objectives, as recommended by the manual, can improve the outcome of rehabilitation of severe mental disorders. Better outcomes in the parallel effectiveness study could be attributed to the greater confidence and enthusiasm of staff in centres where the VADO approach originated.

SUMMARYAim — To assess the association between socio-demographic characteristics and community attitudes towards mentally ill people. Method — We assessed a sample of 280 subjects, stratified for sex and age, which has identified using the electoral registers of Brescia. A letter was sent to everyone in order to introduce the future potential study participant to the topics of the public attitudes towards mental illness and it included an invitation to take part in the study. After, 280 subjects were contacted by telephone. Finally, 174 persons, who expressed their willingness to collaborate, were visited by a team of four trained interviewers. The instruments used were: a semi-structured interview; the Community Attitudes to the Mentally III (CAMI) inven-tory, which is composed by 40 statements, concerning the degree of acceptance of mental health services and mentally ill patients in the community; and the Fear and Behavioural Intentions (FABI) inventory, which is composed by 10 items, concerning fears and behavioural intentions towards mentally ill people. 106 subjects refused to participate. Results — Factor analysis of the CAMI revealed three components Physical distance and fear, Social isolation and Social responsibility and tolerance. Factor 1 is associated with: people >61 years old; people being divorced/widowed/living separated; people who haven't participated in social or volunteer activities. Factor 2 is associated with: people > 41 years old; people being schooled at a level that's higher than elementary level; unemployed people. Factor 3 doesn't present any associations. Conclusions — The results of this study outline the need to: a) promote interventions focused to improve the general attitude towards people with mental illness; b) to favour specific actions in order to prevent or eliminate prejudices in subgroups of the population.Declaration of Interest: in the last two years the authors have been paid by the IRCCS Centra San Giovanni di Dio Fatebenefratelli in Brescia (Italy), as employees and free professionals.

Many knowledges on the mental disease that the community possesses are turning out of information disclosed from the media. It's common in the press to connect actions of violence and murders to the mental diseases. For this reason, the reader is induced to infer that murders and other violent actions are more frequent in people who have suffered from mentally ill, than in the general population. The mystifying impression provided by media accrues from the fact that these reports are rarely compensated from positive reports. Objective of the present study is to characterize the type of information concerning mental illness diffused from the local daily paper "Giornale di Brescia" in the year 2001. The results show that many articles connote negatively the mental disease. The journalistic sensationalism, denounced facing the speech of the prejudgment in the comparisons of the mentally ill people, seems to still remain, in the considered year of publication, one unchanging tendency.

The present study aims to investigate whether exists a meaningful relation between quality of life and subjective well being with regard to the pharmacological treatment (antipsychotic typical versus atypical) in a sample of people with psychotic disorders integrated in a Community Residential Rehabilitation Centre; to examine whether the different antipsychotic treatment is correlated to a different answer to the psychosocial rehabilitation intervention in terms of significant improvement in the positive and negative symptomatology, subjective well-being and quality of life.All patients, who suffer from schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder according to DSM-IV criteria, treated with antipsychotic and stabilized from at least one month, were enrolled in the study.32 patients have participated in the study: 22 patients treated with atypical drugs and 10 with typical. The analysis of the collected data didn't show any significant statistical difference at baseline with regard to symptomatology, subjective well-being and quality of life. From the statistical analysis of the data to the endpoint, after a month of psychosocial rehabilitation, we found a statistically meaningful improvement in all the areas inquired in the group of the patients dealt with antipsychotic atypical drugs.The results confirm that the atypical antipsychotics are more effective, than the typical, to improve symptomatology, subjective well-being and quality of life of psychiatric patients.
