In this article, we analyze contradictions, complexities, limits, and potentialities of internationalization of higher education (IHE) from Latin American decolonial perspectives. We argue that even when scholars may be holding decolonial critiques and aspirations towards IHE, the structures of universities are heavily influenced by colonial legacies, undermining the potentialities of decolonization. We pay special attention to those initiatives that apparently promise a decolonial exit, because they may be acting as traps, or what we called trampas (in Spanish). In this article, we particularly analyze the initiatives that are frequently seen as projects that deviated from the hegemonic discourses of internationalization: i) South-South international higher education cooperation projects, ii) policies and projects that seek to address colonial legacies, and iii) teaching and researching committed with decolonial intentions. In the end, we invite readers, practitioners and scholars alike, to welcome the contradictions we face in such work and not to lose sight of the ongoing, relational, and hyperreflective character of any project that aims to be an alternative to coloniality.

The Otolith Collection of Fishes from the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea was created with the objective to conserve and illustrate the diversity of these structures from species living in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and the freshwater and brackish systems of the Yucatan Peninsula, incorporating morphological descriptions and morphometric data. Otoliths, non-skeletal calcareous structures that develop in the inner ear of fish, are essential for balance and hearing. They have become pivotal tools for age and growth determination, population analysis, and ecological, trophic, and archaeological studies due to their resistance to degradation and the extensive information they provide about the environment and physiology of fish. The collection now includes otoliths from 214 species, representing 67 families, obtained through sampling campaigns and collaborations with local fishermen. The otoliths are extracted using techniques that ensure the integrity of the structures for later preservation. High-resolution images were obtained using optical and scanning electron microscopy, and these images are stored in an online database. This database facilitates research and teaching by providing public access to digital specimens and associated data. In addition to fostering academic development, this collection represents a significant step towards the creation of a national platform for otolith data analysis, aligned with international efforts to digitize biological collections. Despite the financial and logistical challenges involved in building and maintaining biological collections, this collection demonstrates its value as an essential resource for taxonomic, systematic, and ecological studies, as well as for biodiversity education and awareness. The online availability of the collection not only facilitates access to data but also promotes innovation and international collaboration in the study of fishes and their habitats.

Abstract This study aims to (1) compare the kinetics of pulmonary oxygen uptake (VO2p), skeletal muscle deoxygenation ([HHb]), and microvascular O2 delivery (QO2mv) between heart failure (HF) patients with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and those with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), and (2) explore the correlation between body composition, kinetic parameters, and exercise performance. Twenty-one patients (10 HFpEF and 11 HFrEF) underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing to assess VO2 kinetics, with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) employed to measure [HHb]. Microvascular O2 delivery (QO2mv) was calculated using the Fick principle. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) was performed to evaluate body composition. Abstract Occurrence of resistance to olaparib, a poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor (PARPi) approved in ovarian carcinoma, has already been shown in clinical settings. Identifying combination treatments to sensitize tumor cells and/or overcome resistance to olaparib is critical. Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1), a master regulator of mitosis, is also involved in the DNA damage response promoting homologous recombination (HR)-mediated DNA repair and in the recovery from the G2/M checkpoint. We hypothesized that PLK1 inhibition could sensitize tumor cells to PARP inhibition. Onvansertib, a highly selective PLK1 inhibitor, and olaparib were tested in vitro and in vivo in BRCA1 mutated and wild-type (wt) ovarian cancer models, including patient-derived xenografts (PDXs) resistant to olaparib. The combination of onvansertib and olaparib was additive or synergic in different ovarian cancer cell lines, causing a G2/M block of the cell cycle, DNA damage, and apoptosis, much more pronounced in cells treated with the two drugs as compared to controls and single agents treated cells. The combined treatment was well tolerated in vivo and resulted in tumor growth inhibition and a statistically increased survival in olaparib-resistant-BRCA1 mutated models. The combination was also active, although to a lesser extent, in BRCA1 wt PDXs. Pharmacodynamic analyses showed an increase in mitotic, apoptotic, and DNA damage markers in tumor samples derived from mice treated with the combination versus vehicle. We could demonstrate that in vitro onvansertib inhibited both HR and non-homologous end-joining repair pathways and in vivo induced a decrease in the number of RAD51 foci-positive tumor cells, supporting its ability to induce HR deficiency and favoring the activity of olaparib. Considering that the combination was well tolerated, these data support and foster the clinical evaluation of onvansertib with PARPis in ovarian cancer, particularly in the PARPis-resistant setting.

Abstract DNA damage response (DDR) pathway is the coordinated cellular network dealing with the identification, signaling, and repair of DNA damage. It tightly regulates cell cycle progression and promotes DNA repair to minimize DNA damage to daughter cells. Key proteins involved in DDR are frequently mutated/inactivated in human cancers and promote genomic instability, a recognized hallmark of cancer. Besides being an intrinsic property of tumors, DDR also represents a unique therapeutic opportunity. Indeed, inhibition of DDR is expected to delay repair, causing persistent unrepaired breaks, to interfere with cell cycle progression, and to sensitize cancer cells to several DNA‐damaging agents, such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. In addition, DDR defects in cancer cells have been shown to render these cells more dependent on the remaining pathways, which could be targeted very specifically (synthetic lethal approach). Research over the past two decades has led to the synthesis and testing of hundreds of small inhibitors against key DDR proteins, some of which have shown antitumor activity in human cancers. In parallel, the search for synthetic lethality interaction is broadening the use of DDR inhibitors. In this review, we discuss the state‐of‐art of ataxia‐telangiectasia mutated, ataxia‐telangiectasia‐and‐Rad3‐related protein, checkpoint kinase 1, Wee1 and Polθ inhibitors, highlighting the results obtained in the ongoing clinical trials both in monotherapy and in combination with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Abstract Extreme rainfall events (EREs) caused by convection are a major prediction challenge and can lead to deadly flash flooding. This study investigates EREs from 2003 to 2023 over the central and eastern United States using high‐resolution (4‐km) Stage IV precipitation analyses. EREs were defined where 12‐hr accumulations exceeded the 10‐year average recurrence interval thresholds. Summertime (June–August) EREs exhibited pronounced interannual variability, but with statistically significant increasing trends in annual frequency, particularly among those caused by mesoscale convective systems. Significant relationships were also found between summertime convective EREs over the central United States and enhanced poleward moisture transport, consistent with a westward expansion of the climatological North Atlantic Subtropical High. This relationship may aid in medium‐ and long‐range forecasting. However, the spatial scale of EREs often included localized or narrow bands of extreme accumulations, revealing significant challenges in the accurate representation of EREs in weather and climate models.

Background Despite evidence showing that the intranasal and sublingual routes are safe and effective in providing analgesia, no data are available about their day-to-day use in the emergency department (ED). The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of the use of the intranasal and sublingual routes, and the clinical characteristics of the patients receiving analgesia through these routes.Methods A multicentre study was performed in the EDs participating in the Pain in Paediatric Emergency Room research group. It included a survey and a retrospective data collection in which the medical records of all patients who received analgesia from 1 April 2022 to 31 May 2022 were collected.Results 48 centres (91%) answered the survey. The intranasal and sublingual routes were used in 25 centres (52%). 13 centres (27%) used both routes, 9 centres (19%) used only the sublingual and 3 centres (6%) used only the intranasal route.12 centres (48%) participated in the retrospective study. Data about 3409 patients, median age 9 years (IQR 5–12), were collected. Among them, 337 patients (9.6%) received sublingual analgesia, and 87 patients (2.5%) received intranasal analgesia. The intranasal route was employed for injuries in 79 (90.8%) cases, and fentanyl was the drug delivered in 85 (97.7%) cases. The sublingual route was used mainly for injuries (57.3%), but also for abdominal pain (15.4%), musculoskeletal pain (14.5%) and headache (10.7%). Paracetamol, ketorolac and tramadol were administered through this route.Conclusions The use of the intranasal and sublingual routes for analgesia in the paediatric ED is still limited.

Abstract Background Referrals to specialised mental health care (such as community mental health centres; CMHC) have increased over the last two decades. Patients often have multifaceted problems, which cannot only be solved by such care. Resources are limited, and triaging is challenging. A novel method which approaches patients early and individually upon referral to a CMHC—possibly with a brief intervention—is an Early assessment Team (EaT). In an EaT, two therapists meet the patient early in the process and seek to solve the present problem, often involving community services, primary health care, etc.; attention is paid to symptoms and functional strife, rather than diagnoses. This is in contrast to treatment as usual (TAU), where the patient (after being on a waiting list) meets one therapist, who focuses on history and situation to assign a diagnosis and eventually start a longitudinal treatment. The aim of this study is to describe and compare EaT and TAU regarding such outcomes as work and social adjustment, mental health, quality of life, use of health services, and patient satisfaction. The primary outcome is a change in perceived function from baseline to 12-month follow-up, measured by the Work and Social Adjustment Scale. Method Patients (18 years and above; n = 588) referred to outpatient health care at a CMHC are randomised to EaT or TAU. Measures (patient self-reports and clinician reports, patients’ records, and register data) are collected at baseline, after the first and last meeting, and at 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 months after inclusion. Some participants will be invited to participate in qualitative interviews. Trial design The study is a single-centre, non-blinded, RCT with two conditions involving a longitudinal and mixed design (quantitative and qualitative data). Discussion This study will examine an intervention designed to determine early on which patients will benefit from parallel or other measures than assessment and treatment in CMHC and whether these will facilitate their recovery. Findings may potentially contribute to the development of the organisation of mental health services. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05087446. Registered on 21 October 2021.

Abstract Background Although immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) show a more favorable toxicity profile than classical cytotoxic drugs, their mechanism of action is responsible for peculiar new toxicities. There is an urgent need for a multidisciplinary approach to advice on how to manage organ‐specific toxicities. Methods Our project aims to integrate the practices of two different hospitals into a single Italian regional collaborative model to treat immune‐related adverse events (irAEs). The team structure is a multi‐professional and multidisciplinary cooperative network that consists of different medical specialists. The team referrer is the medical oncologist and an existing telematic platform is used for specialists' cooperation. The leading oncologist first evaluates patients' clinical condition, therefore team intervention and teleconsultation are planned to activate proper management. After a first phase structured for general setting, outcomes analysis, data collection, and identification of critical issues, it is planned to define appropriate key performance indicators (KPIs) in quality, structure, process, and outcome settings. Therefore, a second phase would serve to implement KPIs. In the third phase, the proposal for the enlargement of the network with the extension to more centers in the context of the Regional Health Service will be performed. Discussion The multidisciplinary management of irAEs based on telemedicine fits into the debate on the renewal of healthcare systems and the push for change toward multidisciplinary with the rising use of telemedicine. To our knowledge, this is the first project reporting a multi‐institutional experience for change of service in irAEs management.

This study investigated the impact of six high-intensity interval training (HIIT) running sessions on 1% or 10% slopes on various physiological and performance parameters in 25 men. The participants underwent assessments of VO2max, time to exhaustion on 1% slope (TLim1%), and time to exhaustion on 10% slope (TLim10%) in the initial three visits. They were then randomly assigned to control (CON), HIIT on 1% slope (GT1%), or HIIT on 10% slope (GT10%) groups. Over three weeks, participants performed six HIIT sessions with equalized workload based on their individual maximal oxygen uptake (vVO2max). The sessions comprised 50% of TLim, with a 1:1 ratio of exercise to recovery at 50% vVO2max. The results indicated significant improvements in VO2max and peak velocity (VPeak) after HIIT on both slopes. Heart rate (HR) differed between sessions for GT1%, while no significant differences were observed for GT10%. Ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) were significantly reduced for GT1% after the third session, with a similar trend for GT10%. In summary, six HIIT sessions on a 1% or 10% slope effectively enhanced VO2max and VPeak, but there was no improvement in TLim performance, suggesting no adaptive transfer between training groups.

The historical development of Chile's doctoral education is closely tied to its semi-peripheral position in the world economy. Drawing from secondary data and historical sources on the development of doctoral education, we conducted a critical analysis of the different phases of doctoral education within the last 70 years, paying special attention to the reforms implemented in the last 15 years. Our analysis revealed that Chile's doctoral education is going through a phase of rapid expansion of doctoral enrolment, internationalisation, and quantification of academic quality, responding to the paradigm of the knowledge economy. Particularly, we argue that the emphasis on quantifying the quality of doctoral education unintentionally undermines the potential of doctoral education to support the processes of scientific and technological knowledge creation that truly address the most pressing issues of Chilean society.

Social class of origin is apparently an imperceptible attribute among doctorate holders seeking academic jobs. Yet, recent studies in different countries reveal that social class of origin may still be influencing the chances of PhD holders from low social class being hired at prestigious universities. Drawing from the theory of social and cultural reproduction, normative 'fair' academic hirings frameworks, and qualitative evidence collected in Chile, this research identifies the mechanisms that trigger (un)conscious social class bias in the stages of recruitment and selection of candidates in seven academic departments in economics and industrial engineering (46 interviews). Findings did not prove explicit classism manifestations, but practices of inclusion/exclusion of candidates based on the prestige of PhD-granting universities, and networks. These reproduce the relationship between social class and unequal chances of being connected to prestigious universities. Recommendations to address (un)conscious social class bias in academic hiring are discussed.

Resumo Fundamento: Atualmente, o excesso de ventilação tem sido fundamentado na relação entre ventilação-minuto/produção de dióxido de carbono ( V ˙ E − V ˙ CO 2). Alternativamente, uma nova abordagem para eficiência ventilatória ( η E V ˙) tem sido publicada. Objetivo: Nossa hipótese principal é que níveis comparativamente baixos de η E V ˙ entre insuficiência cardíaca crônica (ICC) e doença pulmonar obstrutiva crônica (DPOC) são atingíveis para um nível semelhante de desempenho aeróbico máximo e submáximo, inversamente aos métodos estabelecidos há muito tempo (inclinação V ˙ E − V ˙ CO 2 e intercepto). Métodos: Ambos os grupos realizaram testes de função pulmonar, ecocardiografia e teste de exercício cardiopulmonar. O nível de significância adotada na análise estatística foi 5%. Assim, dezenove indivíduos elegíveis para DPOC e dezenove indivíduos elegíveis para ICC completaram o estudo. Com o objetivo de contrastar valores completos de V ˙ E − V ˙ CO 2 e η E V ˙ para o período de exercício (100%), correlações foram feitas com frações menores, como 90% e 75% dos valores máximos. Resultados: Os dois grupos tiveram características correspondentes para a idade (62±6 vs 59±9 anos, p>.05), sexo (10/9 vs 14/5, p>0,05), IMC (26±4 vs 27±3 Kg m2, p>0,05), e pico V ˙ O 2 (72±19 vs 74±20 % pred, p>0,05), respectivamente. A inclinação V ˙ E − V ˙ CO 2 e intercepto foram significativamente diferentes para DPOC e ICC (207,2±1,4 vs 33,1±5,7 e 5,3±1,9 vs 1,7±3,6, p0,850 para ambos). Conclusão: A η E V ˙ é um método valioso para comparação entre doenças cardiopulmonares, com mecanismos fisiopatológicos até agora distintos, incluindo restrições ventilatórias na DPOC.

Attraverso la ricognizione sui luoghi e lo spoglio di una ricca documentazione d’archivio – in particolare atti notarili degli enti monastici proprietari in antico delle terre attraversate dalla via (soprattutto quello di San Zeno), il Campion delle strade formato dal Comune di Verona nel 1589, i Libri d’Estimo dei Comuni interessati dal percorso della via, la topografia medievale e moderna disponibile, a cominciare dalla così detta Carta dell’Almagià, della seconda metà del Quattrocento, per giungere fino Catasto Unico Italiano, istituito nel 1886 – si ricostruisce il percorso che risulta unire anticamente la città di Verona al paese di San Pietro in Valle, ai limiti del territorio veronese, attraversando l’intera pianura occidentale. In particolare, essa consentiva un diretto collegamento tra il grande e potente monastero di San Zeno al piccolo monastero di San Pietro di Moratica che da questo dipendeva.
