The second VIIRS instrument was launched on-board the NOAA-20 (formerly JPSS-1) satellite onNovember 18, 2017. It was designed and built with the same performance requirements as the first VIIRSon-board the S-NPP launched on October 28, 2011. Currently, the NOAA-20 is orbiting the Earth in thesame plane as the S-NPP but separated in time and space by 50 minutes. The VIIRS observations are made in22 spectral bands, including a day-night band (DNB) that cover wavelengths from visible to long-waveinfrared. The sensor's on-orbit calibration is provided by a set of on-board calibrators (OBCs), which includea solar diffuser (SD), a solar diffuser stability monitor (SDSM), and a blackbody (BB). After turn-on, theVIIRS instrument conducted a series of post-launch testing (PLT) and intensive calibration and validation(ICV) activities, including those performed via spacecraft maneuvers, designed to verify and establishinstrument on-orbit calibration performance baseline. This paper provides an overview of NOAA-20 VIIRSICV activities and an assessment of its initial on-orbit performance with a focus on several key calibrationparameters, such as the detector response (or gain), dynamic range, and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Variousissues identified and lessons learned from initial instrument operation and calibration are also discussed insupport of long-term monitoring (LTM) of NOAA-20 VIIRS calibration and data quality.

The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is a key sensor carried on the newly launched (November 18, 2017) Joint Polar Satellite System-1 (JPSS-1), now transitioned to NOAA-20, and the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) satellite. The two VIIRS sensors are nearly identical in design. Its on-board calibration components include a solar diffuser (SD) and a solar diffuser stability monitor (SDSM) for the reflective solar bands (RSB), a V-groove blackbody for the thermal emissive bands (TEB), and a space view (SV) port for background subtraction. These on-board calibrators are located at fixed scan angles. The VIIRS response versus scan angle (RVS) was characterized prelaunch in lab ambient conditions and is currently used to calibrate the on-orbit response for all scan angles relative to the calibrator's scan angle. A spacecraft level pitch maneuver was scheduled during the initial intensive Cal/Val testing for both the NOAA-20 and SNPP. The pitch maneuver provided a rare opportunity for VIIRS to make observations of deep space over the entire scan angle range, which can be used to characterize the TEB RVS. This study provides our analysis of the NOAA-20 pitch maneuver data and assessment of the derived TEB RVS. A comparison between the RVS determined by the pitch maneuver observations and prelaunch lab measurements is conducted for each band, detector, and mirror side of the half angle mirror.

The VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) instrument onboard the NOAA-20 satellite (launched on November 18, 2017) started to collect Earth-view data after its nadir door opened on December 13, 2017. Seven of the VIIRS bands, I4-5 and M12-16 are thermal emissive bands (TEBs), covering a spectral range from 3.6 to 12.5 meters. They began collecting valid data after the cold focal plane assembly (CFPA) cooled down to its nominal operating temperature on January 6, 2018. This paper will present the performance of each TEB, including calibration coefficients, noise equivalent differential temperature (NEdT), on-orbit calibration coefficient estimates from scheduled onboard blackbody warm-up and cool-down (WUCD) data, as well as related telemetry temperatures. Several methods are tested and compared in the WUCD data analysis for estimating the calibration coefficients. Based on the preliminary results, the NEdT of each band is well below the design specification and very close to that of the VIIRS onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) satellite. The detector gains appear stable for bands on the short- and mid-wave infrared CFPA, whereas the detector gains have larger than expected degradation for bands on the long-wave infrared CFPA during the early mission. All TEB-related telemetry temperatures are stable. The on-orbit performance of NOAA-20 VIIRS TEB is compared with VIIRS onboard the SNPP.

Two MODIS instruments (Terra and Aqua) and two VIIRS instruments (S-NPP and JPSS-1) are currently operated inspace, continuously making global earth observations in the spectral range from visible (VIS) to long-wave infrared(LWIR). These observations have enabled a broad range of environmental data records to be generated and distributed insupport of both operational and scientific community. Despite extensive pre-launch calibration and characterizationperformed for both MODIS and VIIRS instruments and routine on-orbit calibration activities carried out using their onboardcalibrators (OBC), various spacecraft maneuvers have also been designed and implemented to further enhance thesensor on-orbit calibration and data quality. This paper focuses on the use of observations made during spacecraft pitchmaneuvers of MODIS and VIIRS in support of their on-orbit characterization of thermal emissive bands (TEB) responseversus scan-angle (RVS). In the case of Terra MODIS, lunar observations made from instrument nadir view duringspacecraft pitch maneuvers are used to compare with that made regularly through instrument space view (SV) port toevaluate on-orbit changes in RVS and band-to-band registration (BBR) for the reflective solar bands (RSB). In additionto results derived from spacecraft pitch maneuvers performed for MODIS and VIIRS, discussion is provided on theadvantages, challenges, and lessons for future considerations and improvements.

Since launch in November 2018, the VIIRS on-board the NOAA-20 (or JPSS-1) satellite has completed its initial intensive on-orbit check-outs and several key calibration and validation activities scheduled to help evaluate sensor at launch performance. This paper provides a brief overview of NOAA-20 VIIRS on-orbit operation and calibration activities, presents early results derived from its on-board calibrators and lunar observations, and discusses potential improvements and future effort to assure sensor data product quality.

Since the RVS is vitally important to the quality of calibrated radiance products, several independent studies were performed to analyze the prelaunch RVS measurement data. A spacecraft level pitch maneuver was scheduled during the first 3 months of intensive Cal/Val. The S-NPP pitch maneuver provided a rare opportunity for VIIRS to make observations of deep space over the entire range of Earth view scan angles, which can be used to characterize the TEB RVS. This study provides our analysis of the pitch maneuver data and assessment of the derived TEB RVS by comparison with prelaunch results. In addition, the stability of the RVS after the first 5 years of operation is examined using observed brightness temperatures (BT) over a clear ocean at various angles of incidence (AOI). To reduce the impact of variations in the BT measurements, the daily overpasses collected over the ocean are screened for cloud contamination, normalized to the results obtained at the blackbody AOI, and averaged each year.

The Suomi national polar-orbiting partnership Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument has successfully operated since its launch in October 2011. The VIIRS day-night band (DNB) is a panchromatic channel covering wavelengths from 0.5 to 0.9 microns that is capable of observing Earth scenes during both daytime and nighttime at a spatial resolution of 750 m. To cover the large dynamic range, the DNB operates at low-, middle-, and high-gain stages, and it uses an on-board solar diffuser (SD) for its low-gain stage calibration. The SD observations also provide a means to compute the gain ratios of low-to-middle and middle-to-high gain stages. This paper describes the DNB on-orbit calibration methodology used by the VIIRS characterization support team in supporting the NASA Earth science community with consistent VIIRS sensor data records made available by the land science investigator-led processing systems. It provides an assessment and update of the DNB on-orbit performance, including the SD degradation in the DNB spectral range, detector gain and gain ratio trending, and stray-light contamination and its correction. Also presented in this paper are performance validations based on Earth scenes and lunar observations, and comparisons to the calibration methodology used by the operational interface data processing segment.

The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) is a key instrument on-board the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) spacecraft. The S-NPP launched in October 2011 and it has been collecting valuable Earth science data with VIIRS and four other instruments for more than five years. The VIIRS Characterization Support Team (VCST) of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Science Investigator-led Processing Systems (SIPS) is designed to support the VIIRS sensor pre-launch geometric and radiometric characterization and to access on-orbit long-term Level-1B (L1B) calibration and performance. This paper reviews the VIIRS thermal emissive bands (TEB), covering wavelengths from 3.7 to 12.0 μm, L1B radiometric calibration algorithms and presents the calibration uncertainty methodology which will be implanted in the L1B processing software. Discussions will be focused on the key uncertainty parameters and the application in L1B.

In this study, the observations from S-NPP VIIRS Day-Night band (DNB) and Moderate resolution bands (M bands) of Libya 4 and Dome C over the first four years of the mission are used to assess the DNB low gain calibration stability. The Sensor Data Records produced by NASA Land Product Evaluation and Algorithm Testing Element (PEATE) are acquired from nearly nadir overpasses for Libya 4 desert and Dome C snow surfaces. A kernel-driven bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) correction model is used for both Libya 4 and Dome C sites to correct the surface BRDF influence. At both sites, the simulated top-of-atmosphere (TOA) DNB reflectances based on SCIAMACHY spectral data are compared with Land PEATE TOA reflectances based on modulated Relative Spectral Response (RSR). In the Libya 4 site, the results indicate a decrease of 1.03% in Land PEATE TOA reflectance and a decrease of 1.01% in SCIAMACHY derived TOA reflectance over the period from April 2012 to January 2016. In the Dome C site, the decreases are 0.29% and 0.14%, respectively. The consistency between SCIAMACHY and Land PEATE data trends is good. The small difference between SCIAMACHY and Land PEATE derived TOA reflectances could be caused by changes in the surface targets, atmosphere status, and on-orbit calibration. The reflectances and radiances of Land PEATE DNB are also compared with matching M bands and the integral M bands based on M4, M5, and M7. The fitting trends of the DNB to integral M bands ratios indicate a 0.75% decrease at the Libya 4 site and a 1.89% decrease at the Dome C site. Part of the difference is due to an insufficient number of sampled bands available within the DNB wavelength range. The above results indicate that the Land PEATE VIIRS DNB product is accurate and stable. The methods used in this study can be used on other satellite instruments to provide quantitative assessments for calibration stability.

This paper provides methodologies developed and implemented by the NASA VIIRS Calibration Support Team (VCST) to validate the S-NPP VIIRS Day-Night band (DNB) and M bands calibration performance. The Sensor Data Records produced by the Interface Data Processing Segment (IDPS) and NASA Land Product Evaluation and Algorithm Testing Element (PEATE) are acquired nearly nadir overpass for Libya 4 desert and Dome C snow surfaces. In the past 3.5 years, the modulated relative spectral responses (RSR) change with time and lead to 3.8% increase on the DNB sensed solar irradiance and 0.1% or less increases on the M4-M7 bands. After excluding data before April 5th, 2013, IDPS DNB radiance and reflectance data are consistent with Land PEATE data with 0.6% or less difference for Libya 4 site and 2% or less difference for Dome C site. These difference are caused by inconsistent LUTs and algorithms used in calibration. In Libya 4 site, the SCIAMACHY spectral and modulated RSR derived top of atmosphere (TOA) reflectance are compared with Land PEATE TOA reflectance and they indicate a decrease of 1.2% and 1.3%, respectively. The radiance of Land PEATE DNB are compared with the simulated radiance from aggregated M bands (M4, M5, and M7). These data trends match well with 2% or less difference for Libya 4 site and 4% or less difference for Dome C. This study demonstrate the consistent quality of DNB and M bands calibration for Land PEATE products during operational period and for IDPS products after April 5th, 2013.

The first Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument was successfully launched on-board the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) spacecraft on October 28, 2011. Suomi NPP VIIRS observations are made in 22 spectral bands, from the visible (VIS) to the long-wave infrared (LWIR), and are used to produce 22 Environmental Data Records (EDRs) with a broad range of scientific applications. The quality of these VIIRS EDRs strongly depends on the quality of its calibrated and geo-located Sensor Date Records (SDRs). Built with a strong heritage to the NASA's EOS MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument, the VIIRS is calibrated on-orbit using a similar set of on-board calibrators (OBC), including a solar diffuser (SD) and solar diffuser stability monitor (SDSM) system for the reflective solar bands (RSB) and a blackbody (BB) for the thermal emissive bands (TEB). On-orbit maneuvers of the SNPP spacecraft provide additional calibration and characterization data from the VIIRS instrument which cannot be obtained pre-launch and are required to produce the highest quality SDRs. These include multi-orbit yaw maneuvers for the characterization of SD and SDSM screen transmission, quasi-monthly roll maneuvers to acquire lunar observations to track sensor degradation in the visible through shortwave infrared, and a driven pitch-over maneuver to acquire multiple scans of deep space to determine TEB response versus scan angle (RVS). This paper pro-vides an overview of these three SNPP calibration maneuvers. Discussions are focused on their potential calibration and science benefits, pre-launch planning activities, and on-orbit scheduling and implementation strategies. Results from calibration maneuvers performed during the Intensive Calibration and Validation (ICV) period for the VIIRS sensor are illustrated. Also presented in this paper are lessons learned regarding the implementation of calibration spacecraft maneuvers on follow-on missions.

The Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) satellite, formally the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) Preparatory Project (NPP), provides a bridge between current and future low-Earth orbiting weather and environmental observation satellite systems. The NASA s NPP VIIRS Characterization Support Team (VCST) is designed to assess the long term geometric and radiometric performance of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument onboard the S-NPP spacecraft and to support NPP Science Team Principal Investigators (PI) for their independent evaluation of VIIRS Environmental Data Records (EDRs). This paper provides an overview of Suomi NPP VIIRS on-orbit calibration activities and examples of sensor initial on-orbit performance. It focuses on the radiometric calibration support activities and capabilities provided by the NASA VCST.
