Microfluidic is a technology that allows the precise control of fluid in a micro-channel. With its advantages of high throughput and low cost, microfluidic technology has achieved good performance in various fields in recent years. Arthritis is a general term for a variety of joint diseases, which can be clinically manifested as joint pain and swelling, seriously affecting people's physical and mental health. At present, the causes of arthritis disease are still unknown, and existing disease models and treatment methods are still limited, so more treatments need to be developed. Microfluidic organ chip is a cutting-edge technology to build a bionic human organ model, which can reflect the structure and function characteristics of human organs by simulating the physiological environment of tissues and cells in vitro. This paper reviews the application of microfluidic technology in the modeling and treatment of arthritis, hoping to open up a new vision for the study of arthritis.

IntroductionNocardia farcinica is an opportunistic bacterium that causes bovine mastitis and pulmonary, cutaneous, and central nervous system infections in humans. Bovine abortion caused by N. farcinica has been sporadically reported. The purpose of this study was to analyze the pathological findings of bovine abortions caused by N. farcinica in the Republic of Korea and determine the antimicrobial resistance and genotypical characteristics of N. farcinica isolates.Case presentationThree cases of bovine abortions were submitted to the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency for differential diagnosis. Grossly, one fetus showed severe lung consolidation following palpation of the entire lobes. Histologically, necrotizing granulomatous interstitial pneumonia was observed in all fetuses; a fetus with a gross lesion demonstrated necrotizing lymphadenitis in the mesenteric lymph nodes and necrotizing dermatitis in the ear. N. farcinica isolates were isolated from the abomasal contents and lungs of all fetuses. Finally, two cases were diagnosed as abortions due to N. farcinica, and one was diagnosed as an N. farcinica abortion coinfected with bovine viral diarrhea virus. According to the multilocus sequence analysis, all isolates were identified as N. farcinica and were determined to be genetically related to isolates from humans. Two N. farcinica isolates were resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, which is recommended as the first treatment for human nocardial infections.ConclusionThis is the first pathological report of bovine abortion caused by N. farcinica in the Republic of Korea. Further studies are needed to phenotypically and genotypically characterize N. farcinica isolates with various sources and continuously monitor antimicrobial resistance patterns.

Summary: We delve into the distinctive color gamut characteristics resulting from color dispersion of surface relief grating (SRG) and wavelength degeneracy of volume holographic optical element (VHOE) in a diffractive light guide. While a laser-like spectrum achieves an impressive 194% sRGB color gamut for both cases, it proves unsuitable for VHOE light guides due to limitations in breaking the field of view (FOV) of the display. Conversely, a broad-band light source, such as LEDs, offers continuous FOV but reduces the common color gamut to 50% sRGB. We then present a newly designed VHOE light guide capable of achieving the common color gamut of 130% sRGB using two multiplexed holograms of each color, closely matching the 133% sRGB achieved by an SRG light guide. This article presents the first theoretical methodology to elucidate color performance of diffractive light guides utilizing VHOEs with holographic multiplexing, affirming their suitability for crafting high-quality near-eye display.

Due to the depletion of river sand, the construction industry is eager to develop upcycling techniques for transforming secondary by-products derived from construction and demolition (C&D) waste into quality fine aggregates. This paper presents a study of replacing river sand with enhanced recycled fine aggregate through a wet carbonation process developed by the authors previously. The fine recycled concrete aggregate (FRCA) ranging from 0.15 to 5 mm was prepared by demolishing a concrete with a known mixture design. After wet carbonation, the particle size, water absorption, and density of the FRCA were tested and compared with the original samples. The chemical characteristics of the original and carbonated FRCA (C-FRCA) were analyzed by a series of experiments. The results showed that (1) an increase of carbonation products and a significant reduction of hydration products; (2) microscopic observation of the C-FRCA showed a surface layer densified by calcite after wet carbonation; and (3) no significant strength loss were observed when replacing up to 50% river sand by C-FRCA in mortar specimens. The potential environmental and economic impacts were also analyzed.

Abstract Assist-as-needed control with a soft robotic hand glove for active rehabilitation is studied in this work. There are two resources of the grasping force, the robotic glove and the subject. Compared with traditional passive rehabilitation where the grasping force is merely provided by a robotic hand rehabilitation device (such as hand exoskeleton, robotic glove), assist-as-needed control accounts for the user contribute to performing grasping tasks collaboratively. In this control method, the human muscle strength for grasping is estimated through the myoelectrical signals of the human forearm collected by the MYO armband. A neural network is used for the recognition of human-object contact estimation. The assist-as-needed control is finally implemented to assist humans in grasping tasks. Experiment results on a soft robotic glove show the effectiveness of the proposed assistive control method.

Abstract Aim Rates vary widely across hospitals globally and typically range from 3 to 11 falls per 1000 bed days and as 7–11 in Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University. This study determined to explore contributing factors and poor prognosis of fall in elderly tumour patients in China. Design A cross‐sectional study. Methods 161 older adults were invited to participate in this study and completed a self‐reported questionnaire, took blood tests, and received the exam of musculoskeletal ultrasound. Results Among 161 patients, falls occurred in 41 cases, accounting for 24.8%. 51.6% of older adults suffered from intermediate‐to‐high risk of falls. Fall history, reduced self‐care ability, sleep disturbance, hearing impairment, hyperkyphosis, chronic disease, platelet count, and the thickness of left muscle rectus femoris (LF‐MLT), and left cross‐sectional area (LF‐CSA) were all contributing factors of fall, and higher risk of fall indicating lower quality of life. A fall prediction model was established in this study based on above contributing factors with good prediction efficiency (AUC = 0.920). Abstract Enhancers function with a basal promoter to control the transcription of target genes. Enhancer regulatory activity is often studied using reporter-based transgene assays. However, unmatched results have been reported when selected enhancers are silenced in situ. In this study, using genomic deletion analysis in mice, we investigated the roles of two previously identified enhancers and the promoter of the Rho gene that codes for the visual pigment rhodopsin. The Rho gene is robustly expressed by rod photoreceptors of the retina, and essential for the subcellular structure and visual function of rod photoreceptors. Mutations in RHO cause severe vision loss in humans. We found that each Rho regulatory region can independently mediate local epigenomic changes, but only the promoter is absolutely required for establishing active Rho chromatin configuration and transcription and maintaining the cell integrity and function of rod photoreceptors. To our surprise, two Rho enhancers that enable strong promoter activation in reporter assays are largely dispensable for Rho expression in vivo. Only small and age-dependent impact is detectable when both enhancers are deleted. Our results demonstrate context-dependent roles of enhancers and highlight the importance of studying functions of cis-regulatory regions in the native genomic context.

The intricate geometry and thin walls of the motor housing in new energy vehicles render it susceptible to casting defects during conventional casting processes. However, the lost-foam casting process holds a unique advantage in eliminating casting defects and ensuring the strength and air-tightness of thin-walled castings. In this paper, the lost-foam casting process of thin-walled A356 alloy motor housing was simulated using ProCAST software (2016.0). The results indicate that the filling process is stable and exhibits characteristics of diffusive filling. Solidification occurs gradually from thin to thick. Defect positions are accurately predicted. Through analysis of the defect volume range, the optimal process parameter combination is determined to be a pouring temperature of 700 °C, an interfacial heat transfer coefficient of 50, and a sand thermal conductivity coefficient of 0.5. Microscopic analysis of the motor housing fabricated using the process optimized through numerical simulations reveals the absence of defects such as shrinkage at critical locations.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the pathogenicity of extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) isolated from dog and cat lung samples in South Korea. A total of 101 E. coli isolates were analyzed for virulence factors, phylogroups, and O-serogroups, and their correlation with bacterial pneumonia-induced mortality was elucidated. P fimbriae structural subunit (papA), hemolysin D (hlyD), and cytotoxic necrotizing factor 1 (cnf1) were highly prevalent in both species, indicating correlation with bacterial pneumonia. Phylogroups B1 and B2 were the most prevalent phylogroups (36.6% and 32.7%, respectively) and associated with high bacterial pneumonia-induced mortality rates. Isolates from both species belonging to phylogroup B2 showed high frequency of papA, hlyD, and cnf1. O-serogrouping revealed 21 and 15 serogroups in dogs and cats, respectively. In dogs, O88 was the most prevalent serogroup (n = 8), and the frequency of virulence factors was high for O4 and O6. In cats, O4 was the most prevalent serogroup (n = 6), and the frequency of virulence factors was high for O4 and O6. O4 and O6 serogroups were mainly grouped under phylogroup B2 and associated with high bacterial pneumonia-induced mortality. This study characterized the pathogenicity of ExPEC and described the probability of ExPEC pneumonia-induced mortality.

The use of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) produced from waste concrete in new concrete is an effective way to realize the recycling of construction and demolition waste. The utilization of accelerated carbonation to enhance RCA has attracted a lot attention because it can enhance performance of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) and has potential for CO2 sequestration. This study systematically investigated the influences of the duration of pressurized carbonation on the properties of RCA, RCA-new mortar interface, and RAC. The results showed that water absorption of carbonated RCA (CRCA) decreased with the increase of carbonation duration. But the beneficial effect of carbonation was less obvious after 1-day carbonation because most of calcium hydroxide and Ca-rich calcium silicate hydrates in RCA had reacted with CO2 within 1 day. After using CRCA, the improvement in different performance indicators of RAC was dependent on different factors. The enhancement in compressive strength and chloride penetration resistance of RAC prepared with CRCA were dependent on the reduced porosity of CRCA. That was why they correlated with the water absorption of CRCA as carbonation duration increased. However, the decrease in initial absorption of water of RAC was mainly dependent on the denser surface layer of CRCA, rather than the reduced porosity of CRCA. This is because the denser surface layer can change water path from “penetrating through RCA” to “passing around RCA”. It is recommended to use 1-day carbonation to enhance RCA, which might have higher cost-effectiveness.

Homeodomain transcription factors (HD TFs) are instrumental to vertebrate development. Mutations in HD TFs have been linked to human diseases, but their pathogenic mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we use Cone-Rod Homeobox (CRX) as a model to decipher the disease-causing mechanisms of two HD mutations, p.E80A and p.K88N, that produce severe dominant retinopathies. Through integrated analysis of molecular and functional evidence in vitro and in knock-in mouse models, we uncover two novel gain-of-function mechanisms: p.E80A increases CRX-mediated transactivation of canonical CRX target genes in developing photoreceptors; p.K88N alters CRX DNA-binding specificity resulting in binding at ectopic sites and severe perturbation of CRX target gene expression. Both mechanisms produce novel retinal morphological defects and hinder photoreceptor maturation distinct from loss-of-function models. This study reveals the distinct roles of E80 and K88 residues in CRX HD regulatory functions and emphasizes the importance of transcriptional precision in normal development.

IntroductionCryptosporidium, Cystoisospora, and Giardia duodenalis are gastrointestinal protozoa parasites that cause diarrhea in various animals. However, information regarding the detection and phylogenetic characterization of gastrointestinal protozoa parasites in cats is limited throughout South Korea. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the detection and identify subspecies of gastrointestinal protozoa parasites in cats from South Korea. MethodsA total of 290 fecal samples were collected from stray, companion, and shelter cats in six provinces. Cryptosporidium, Cystoisospora, and G. duodenalis were identified by PCR. All positive samples were subtyped by PCR and sequencing of gp60, ITS-1, tpi, bg, and gdh. ResultsThe overall detection of gastrointestinal protozoan parasitic infection was 17.93%. G. duodenalis was the most prevalent, with 7.93%, followed by Cystoisospora spp. (7.24%) and Cryptosporidium spp. (4.48%). In addition, C. felis (n=10), C. parvum (n=2), C. ryanae (n=1), Cystoisospora felis (n=14), Cystoisospora suis (n=5), Cystoisospora ohioensis (n=1), Cystoisospora spp. were identified in subspecies analysis of positive samples. C. felis showed a significant association with diarrhea (7.81%) and living condition (6.04%), and Cystoisospora felis in diarreha (9.38%) according to detection. Through phylogenetic analysis of the tpi, bg, and gdh genes from 23 G. duodenalispositive samples, it was confirmed that the samples of present study belonged to assemblage A, B, C, and D. DiscussionSouth Korean cats have a high rate of gastrointestinal protozoan parasites infection with cat-specific Cryptosporidium and Cystoisospora, which are associated with living conditions and diarrhea symptoms. Moreover, zoonotic and other animal-specific subtype of protozoan parasites have been detected in cat feces.

Abstract In this study, we propose a novel high-concentration photovoltaic (HCPV) cell by considering both the light leakage characteristics of the Fresnel-lens-based solar cell modules and the performance issues arising from cloud shading in practical use. We use our self-constructed systems to conduct field measurements for up to half a year under various environmental conditions. According to the acquired results, it was surprising to know that in the area other than the focusing area, the so-called light leakage region, there always bears illuminance of about 20,000–40,000 lx whether it is a sunny day or a cloudy day with different cloud conditions. Such an interesting result is caused by the light scattering of the clouds and the inherent leakage characteristic of a Fresnel lens. To prove this important finding, we simulated the illuminance of the Fresnel lens structure used in the measurement with apertures of different sizes to determine the detected area. In the laboratory, the diffuse plates were used to mimic the situation of varying cloud layer thicknesses. The trend of calculated and measured results fitted well with the field measurements. Also, the experimental and simulation results show that the round angle and draft facet of the Fresnel lens were responsible for light leakage. This finding prompted us to propose a hybrid high-concentration solar module in which more cost-effective polycrystalline silicon solar cells are placed around the high-efficiency wafer of HCPV to capture the dissipated light leakage and convert it into usable electricity.

Abstract Antimony (Sb), is thought to induce testicular toxicity, although this remains controversial. This study investigated the effects of Sb exposure during spermatogenesis in the Drosophila testis and the underlying transcriptional regulatory mechanism at single-cell resolution. Firstly, we found that flies exposed to Sb for 10 days led to dose-dependent reproductive toxicity during spermatogenesis. Protein expression and RNA levels were measured by immunofluorescence and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) was performed to characterize testicular cell composition and identify the transcriptional regulatory network after Sb exposure in Drosophila testes. scRNA-seq analysis revealed that Sb exposure influenced various testicular cell populations, especially in GSCs_to_Early_Spermatogonia and Spermatids clusters. Importantly, carbon metabolism was involved in GSCs/early spermatogonia maintenance and positively related with SCP-Containing Proteins, S-LAPs, and Mst84D signatures. Moreover, Seminal Fluid Proteins, Mst57D, and Serpin signatures were highly positively correlated with spermatid maturation. Pseudotime trajectory analysis revealed three novel states for the complexity of germ cell differentiation, and many novel genes (e.g., Dup98B) were found to be expressed in state-biased manners during spermatogenesis. Collectively, this study indicates that Sb exposure negatively impacts GSC maintenance and spermatid elongation, damaging spermatogenesis homeostasis via multiple signatures in Drosophila testes and therefore supporting Sb-mediated testicular toxicity.

IntroductionUnderstanding how photoreceptor genes are regulated is important for investigating retinal development and disease. While much is known about gene regulation in cones, the mechanism by which tandemly-replicated opsins, such as human long wavelength-sensitive and middle wavelength-sensitive opsins, are differentially regulated remains elusive. In this study, we aimed to further our understanding of transcriptional heterogeneity in cones that express tandemly-replicated opsins and the regulation of such differential expression using zebrafish, which express the tandemly-replicated opsins lws1 and lws2.MethodsWe performed bulk and single cell RNA-Seq of LWS1 and LWS2 cones, evaluated expression patterns of selected genes of interest using multiplex fluorescence in situ hybridization, and used exogenous thyroid hormone (TH) treatments to test selected genes for potential control by thyroid hormone: a potent, endogenous regulator of lws1 and lws2 expression.ResultsOur studies indicate that additional transcriptional differences beyond opsin expression exist between LWS1 and LWS2 cones. Bulk RNA-Seq results showed 95 transcripts enriched in LWS1 cones and 186 transcripts enriched in LWS2 cones (FC > 2, FDR < 0.05). In situ hybridization results also reveal underlying heterogeneity within the lws1- and lws2-expressing populations. This heterogeneity is evident in cones of mature zebrafish, and further heterogeneity is revealed in transcriptional responses to TH treatments.DiscussionWe found some evidence of coordinate regulation of lws opsins and other genes by exogenous TH in LWS1 vs. LWS2 cones, as well as evidence of gene regulation not mediated by TH. The transcriptional differences between LWS1 and LWS2 cones are likely controlled by multiple signals, including TH.

Highlights Carbon-negative particleboard is for the first time pioneered by incorporating 70 wt.% biochar. Biochar addition in MOSC systems reduced the thermal conductivity. Further incorporation of SCMs improves the mechanical properties and CO2 sequestration. Biochar particleboard can sequester 137 kg CO2 tonne−1 and yield potential profit of 92–116 USD m−3.

Abstract Background NCAPG, non-SMC subunit in the concentrate I complex, might promote the proliferation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the mechanism is unclear. The aim of this study was to explore how NCAPG affects PTEN to influence the proliferation of HCC. Methods Western blotting, qRT-PCR and immunohistochemistry were used to detect NCAPG expression in HCC tissues. The effect of NCAPG on the proliferation of HCC cell lines was evaluated using an EdU incorporation assay, a Cell Counting Kit-8 assay and Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). BALB/c-nu/nu mice were used for the in vivo proliferation experiment. Transcriptome sequencing was used to determine the relationship between NCAPG and PTEN. Immunocoprecipitation-mass spectrometry (IP-MS), proteomic sequencing and Co-immunoprecipitation (CO-IP) were used to identify and examine the interaction between the NCAPG and CKII proteins. Results We confirmed that NCAPG was abnormally overexpressed in HCC and promoted the proliferation of HCC cells. Transcriptome sequencing revealed that NCAPG inhibited the transcription of PTEN and promoted the activation of the PI3K-AKT pathway. We found a close association between NCAPG and CKII through proteomic sequencing; their interaction was confirmed by Co-IP. There was a positive correlation between NCAPG and CKII that promoted the phosphorylation of PTEN and thus inhibited its transcription and functions. We also proved that CKII was the key factor in the induction of proliferation by NCAPG. Conclusion We revealed the mechanism by which NCAPG regulates the proliferation of HCC: NCAPG inhibits PTEN through its interaction with CKII, and then activates the PI3K-AKT pathway to promote the proliferation of HCC.

Photoreceptor development of the vertebrate visual system is controlled by a complex transcription regulatory network. OTX2 is expressed in the mitotic retinal progenitor cells (RPCs) and controls photoreceptor genesis. CRX that is activated by OTX2 is expressed in photoreceptor precursors after cell cycle exit. NEUROD1 is also present in photoreceptor precursors that are ready to specify into rod and cone photoreceptor subtypes. NRL is required for the rod fate and regulates downstream rod-specific genes including the orphan nuclear receptor NR2E3 which further activates rod-specific genes and simultaneously represses cone-specific genes. Cone subtype specification is also regulated by the interplay of several transcription factors such as THRB and RXRG. Mutations in these key transcription factors are responsible for ocular defects at birth such as microphthalmia and inherited photoreceptor diseases such as Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and allied dystrophies. In particular, many mutations are inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion, including the majority of missense mutations in CRX and NRL. In this review, we describe the spectrum of photoreceptor defects that are associated with mutations in the above-mentioned transcription factors, and summarize the current knowledge of molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenic mutations. At last, we deliberate the outstanding gaps in our understanding of the genotype–phenotype correlations and outline avenues for future research of the treatment strategies.

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to examine trends in the incidence and incidence-based (IB) mortality of functional pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors(F-PNETs), and to identify factors associated with survival times.MethodsData were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database from 2000 to 2017. Trends in the age-adjusted incidence of F-PNETs and IB mortality were examined using the Joinpoint Regression Program. Statistical analyses were run using chi-square tests, Kaplan–Meier curves, and the Cox proportional hazards model. Multiple imputation was used to deal with missing data.ResultsA total of 142 patients with F-PNETs met the study inclusion criteria. Abstract Objective The screw path of lumbar pedicle screws in the vertebral body has certain variability. It is not clear whether the screw paths in different directions can obtain the same pull-out resistance. This study intends to use CT (Computed Tomography) to measure the Hounsfield unit (HU value) around the screw paths in different parts of the lumbar vertebral body to obtain the bone mineral density value of the corresponding parts which will provide some reference for the direction of lumbar pedicle screw placement. Methods This retrospective study included 200 patients with lumbar degenerative diseases selected randomly from the case base and the patient’s basic information was recorded. L1-L5 vertebral body was divided equally into the upper, middle and lower 1/3, which was consistent with the three sagittal entry directions of the pedicle screw head tilt, parallel endplate and caudal tilt, and the HU values were measured by CT cross-sectional scanning to indirectly reflect the local bone density values. Abstract Calcium regulates the response sensitivity, kinetics and adaptation in photoreceptors. In striped bass cones, this calcium feedback includes direct modulation of the transduction cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) channels by the calcium-binding protein CNG-modulin. However, the possible role of EML1, the mammalian homolog of CNG-modulin, in modulating phototransduction in mammalian photoreceptors has not been examined. Here, we used mice expressing mutant Eml1 to investigate its role in the development and function of mouse photoreceptors using immunostaining, in-vivo and ex-vivo retinal recordings, and single-cell suction recordings. We found that the mutation of Eml1 causes significant changes in the mouse retinal structure characterized by mislocalization of rods and cones in the inner retina. Consistent with the fraction of mislocalized photoreceptors, rod and cone-driven retina responses were reduced in the mutants. However, the Eml1 mutation had no effect on the dark-adapted responses of rods in the outer nuclear layer. Notably, we observed no changes in the cone sensitivity in the Eml1 mutant animals, either in darkness or during light adaptation, ruling out a role for EML1 in modulating cone CNG channels. Together, our results suggest that EML1 plays an important role in retina development but does not modulate phototransduction in mammalian rods and cones.

Objective(s): Vitexin, a natural flavonoid, is commonly found in many foods and traditional herbal medicines and has clear health benefits. However, the role of vitexin in cholestasis is presently unclear. This study investigated whether vitexin mitigated glycochenodeoxycholate (GCDC)-induced hepatocyte injury and further elucidated the underlying mechanisms.Materials and Methods: A cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay was conducted to evaluate cell viability. The mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP, Δψm), reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, and apoptosis rate of hepatocytes exposed to GCDC were detected by flow cytometry (FCM). We then measured the cytoprotective effects of vitexin against oxidative stress. The molecular signaling pathway was further investigated by using Western blotting and signaling pathway inhibitors.Results: Here, we showed that vitexin increased cell viability and reduced cell apoptosis, necroptosis, and oxidative stress in a dose-dependent manner in GCDC-treated hepatocytes. In addition, by using selective inhibitors, we further confirmed that inhibition of the JAK2/STAT3 pathway by vitexin was mediated by prolonged activation of Sirtuin 6 (SIRT6).Conclusion: Vitexin attenuated GCDC-induced hepatocyte injury via SIRT6 and the JAK2/STAT3 pathways.

Abstract Centenarians, who show mild infections and low incidence of tumors, are the optimal model to investigate healthy aging. However, longevity related immune characteristics has not been fully revealed largely due to lack of appropriate controls. In this study, single‐cell transcriptomic analysis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) derived from seven centenarians (CEN), six centenarians’ offspring (CO), and nine offspring spouses or neighbors (Control, age‐matched to CO) are performed to investigate the shared immune features between CEN and CO. The results indicate that among all 12 T cell clusters, the cytotoxic‐phenotype‐clusters (CPC) and the naïve‐phenotype‐clusters (NPC) significantly change between CEN and ontrol. Compared to Control, both CEN and CO are characterized by depleted NPC and increased CPC, which is dominated by CD8+ T cells. Furthermore, CPC from CEN and CO share enhanced signaling pathways and transcriptional factors associated with immune response, and possesse similar T‐cell‐receptor features, such as high clonal expansion. Interestingly, rather than a significant increase in GZMK+ CD8 cells during aging, centenarians show accumulation of GZMB+ and CMC1+ CD8 T cells. Collectively, this study unveils an immune remodeling pattern reflected by both quantitative increase and functional reinforcement of cytotoxic T cells which are essential for healthy aging.

Abstract The keystone perforator island flap (KPIF) is popular in reconstructive surgery. However, despite its versatility, its biomechanical effectiveness is unclear. We present our experience of KPIF reconstruction in the human back and evaluate the tension-reducing effect of the KPIF. Between September 2019 and August 2020, 17 patients (51.82 ± 14.72 years) underwent KPIF reconstruction for back defects. In all cases, we measured wound tension at the defect and donor sites before and after KPIF reconstruction using a tensiometer. All defects occurred after complete excision of complicated epidermoid cysts and debridement of surrounding tissues. The defects were successfully covered with Type IIA KPIFs. All flaps survived, and there were no significant postoperative complications. ObjectiveAnterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgery can effectively prevent disease progression in patients with Hirayama disease (HD) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can quantitatively assess spinal cord function. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between preoperative spinal DTI indices and the clinical outcomes of patients with HD when treated by ACDF.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed 35 HD patients treated by ACDF. We collated a range of DTI indices, including fractional anisotropy (FA) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values, prior to surgery with patients in flexion and neutral positions. Patients were divided into improvement (Im) group and non-improvement (Nim) group according to the Odom score, and the difference in surgical outcomes between the two groups was confirmed by quick disabilities of the arm, shoulder and hand (Q-DASH) scores. The DTI indices in the two groups of patients were then compared. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and area under curve (AUC) were used to evaluate the predictive capability. The correlation between Q-DASH scores and DTI indices was also evaluated.ResultsThe FA values in the two groups of patients differed significantly in the cervical flexion position and the different segments were mainly located in the lower cervical spinal cord including the flexion C5/6 (Im group vs. Nim group: 0.501 ± 0.078 vs. 0.362 ± 0.087, P < 0.001) and C6/7 (Im group vs. Nim group: 0.455 ± 0.097 vs. 0.347 ± 0.102, P = 0.003) FA values, the mean FA value for C4/5-C6/7 (Im group vs. Nim group: 0.471 ± 0.067 vs. 0.372 ± 0.078, P < 0.001), mean FA value for C5/6-C6/7 (Im group vs. Nim group: 0.478 ± 0.076 vs. 0.354 ± 0.083, P < 0.001) and mean FA value for the two minimal segments (Im group vs. Nim group: 0.442 ± 0.078 vs. 0.341 ± 0.081, P = 0.001). The ADC values were similar to FA values. The ROC curve for DTI indices in the lower cervical spinal cord had an AUC > 0.7 including: flexion FA value and ADC value for C5/6 (0.877 and 0.931), flexion FA value and ADC value for C6/7 (0.778 and 0.761), flexion mean FA value and ADC value for C4/5-C6/7 (0.846 and 0.859), flexion mean FA value and ADC value for C5/6-C6/7 (0.861 and 0.905), flexion mean FA value and ADC value for the two minimal/maximal segments (0.815 and 0.892). DTI indices including FA value and ADC value were correlated with the preoperative score, final follow-up score and improvement percentage. Flexion ADC value was correlated with improvement score but flexion FA value was not correlated with improvement score.ConclusionPreoperative DTI indices of the spinal cord, especially those of the lower cervical spinal cord with patients in the flexion position, can predict the clinical outcome of patients with HD post-surgery. In general, a larger FA value and a smaller ADC value indicate a better surgical outcome.

Aging induces a series of immune related changes, which is called immunosenescence, playing important roles in many age-related diseases, especially neurodegenerative diseases, tumors, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases and coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19). However, the mechanism of immunosenescence, the association with aging and successful aging, and the effects on diseases are not revealed obviously. In order to provide theoretical basis for preventing or controlling diseases effectively and achieve successful aging, we conducted the review and found that changes of aging-related phenotypes, deterioration of immune organ function and alterations of immune cell subsets participated in the process of immunosenescence, which had great effects on the occurrence and development of age-related diseases.

PurposeHirayama disease (HD) has been largely believed to affect only distal muscles. However, the proximal upper extremities have been affected in some cases, which can be confused with motor neuron diseases.MethodsBaseline data, deep tendon reflex, Hoffmann sign, cervical curvature, sagittal Cobb angle, atrophied spinal cord, high signal intensity, loss of attachment, and affected muscles and segments on electromyography (EMG) were retrospectively obtained and compared between patients with HD with proximal involvement and patients with simple distal HD in one center from September 2007 to April 2022.ResultsIn this study, fifteen patients with proximal HD and 30 patients with simple distal HD were included. The proximal group had a larger proportion of patients with decreased biceps reflex, decreased triceps reflex, brisk or hyperactive knee reflex, positive Hoffmann sign, and cervical kyphosis. The curvatures of the upper part of the cervical spine (C2-4) were lost to a greater degree in the proximal group. More affected segments were observed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and electromyography in the proximal group.ConclusionThe injured segments were longer and the upper curvature of the cervical spine was poorer in patients with HD with proximal involvement. These findings indicated that proximal involvement may indicate more serious HD.

Background: The incidence of depression in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is high and leads to a lower quality of life than that in undepressed SLE patients and healthy individuals. The causes of SLE depression are still unclear. Methods: A total of 94 SLE patients were involved in this study. A series of questionnaires (Hospital Depression Scale, Social Support Rate Scale and so on) were applied. Flow cytometry was used to test the different stages and types of T cells and B cells in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to explore the key contributors to depression in SLE. Support Vector Machine (SVM) learning was applied to form the prediction model. Results: Depressed SLE patients showed lower objective support, severer fatigue, worse sleep quality and higher percentages of ASC%PBMC, ASC%CD19+, MAIT, TEM%Th, TEMRA%Th, CD45RA+CD27-Th, TEMRA%CD8 than non-depressed patients. A learning-based SVM model combining objective and patient-reported variables showed that fatigue, objective support, ASC%CD19+, TEM%Th and TEMRA%CD8 were the main contributing factors to depression in SLE. With the SVM model, the weight of TEM%Th was 0.17, which is the highest among objective variables, and the weight of fatigue was 0.137, which was the highest among variables of patients’ reported outcomes. Conclusions: Both patient-reported factors and immunological factors could be involved in the occurrence and development of depression in SLE. Scientists can explore the mechanism of depression in SLE or other psychological diseases from the above perspective.

ObjectivesTo explore the association of Children's Dietary Inflammatory Index (C-DII) scores with inflammation and markers of inflammatory factors in children and adolescents.MethodsData on dietary nutrient intake, markers of inflammation (ferritin, alkaline phosphatase, C-reactive protein (CRP), absolute neutrophil cell count and lymphocyte count) and oxidative stress (serum bilirubin, albumin, and iron) were available for participants aged 6–19 years (n = 1281). Each participant's C-DII score was calculated based on a 24-h diet and recall. Generalized linear models were applied to examine associations between C-DII and markers of inflammation and oxidative stress, while adjusting for covariates. Restricted cubic splines were used to explore the dose-response association of C-DII scores with indicators of inflammatory oxidative stress. Akaike's Information Criterionwas applied to compare the performance of linear and non-linear models.ResultsAfter adjusting for potential confounders, quantile regression results showed that when comparing C-DII quartile 4 (most pro-inflammatory) and quartile 1 (most anti-inflammatory), lymphocytes, ferritin, CRP were statistically significant differences in serum bilirubin, albumin and serum iron (P < 0.05). The C-DII score showed a non-linear relationship with inflammatory oxidative stress indicators. Overweight/obese children and adolescents who ate a high pro-inflammatory diet were more likely to have higher levels of inflammatory cytokines (P = 0.002).ConclusionsThe dietary inflammatory index in children is associated with markers of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. A pro-inflammatory diet resulted in increased serum concentrations of these markers, implying that early dietary interventions have implications for reducing chronic inflammation and oxidative stress in children and adolescents.

The inferior mechanical properties and durability of conventional lightweight concrete restrict its wider application. This study intended to design a novel lightweight ultra high-performance concrete (L-UHPC) using a mathematical approach, with a view to achieving low density and excellent performance. Two lightweight materials (i.e. micro-sized glass microsphere and expanded shale aggregates) were introduced in the mix design of L-UHPC. The statistical optimization via Central Composite Design was proved to be an effective method to produce the L-UHPC. The designed L-UHPC showed comparable or even superior functional and durability properties than normal-weight UHPC and high-performance cement mortar. The use of specified lightweight materials played prominent roles in ensuring the mechanical properties of L-UHPC. The high microhardness of paste matrix and the internal curing of lightweight aggregates contributed to the great durability of L-UHPC. The development of L-UHPC can provide a new solution for constructing high-performance lightweight structures and composites.

Psoriasis is a long-lasting and recurrent autoimmune disease which is incurable so far. Dead Sea water (DSW) therapy is an effective approach to help control the symptoms of psoriasis due to the abundant mineral ions in DSW, which inspired the material formulation in this study. Rubidium–Sodium alginate/Polyacrylamide hydrogels (Rb-SA/PAAm gels) composed of sodium alginate and polyacrylamide interpenetrating network structure with different concentrations of rubidium and certain magnesium and zinc content were prepared for the treatment of psoriasis. The obtained results suggest the good mechanical properties of the Rb-SA/PAAm gels including toughness and swelling performance. In terms of in vitro tests, the Rb-SA/PAAm gels not only show nontoxicity to human keratinocyte cell line (Hacats) but also inhibits the activity against inflammatory NF-κβ signaling pathway. Meanwhile, they can release Rb+ which enable the Rb-SA/PAAm gels have better antibacterial ability to Streptococcus and Escherichia coli. The results obtained from in vivo tests indicate that these hydrogels could alleviate the symptoms of psoriasis caused by Imiquimod (IMQ) in mice by reducing the inflammatory factor in STAT3 pathway and therefore reduce the immune stimulation of the spleen. In conclusion, the 100Rb-SA/PAAm gel has demonstrated great potential to be a topical wettable dressing for psoriasis treatment.

Background: This study aimed to determine the role of surgical treatment in patients with stage II intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA). Methods: Data were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. We divided stage II iCCAs into solitary tumors with vascular invasion (T2sN0M0) and multiple tumors with/without vascular invasion (T2mN0M0) according to the criteria of AJCC v.8. The Kaplan–Meier method and log-rank test were used to evaluate differences in overall survival (OS). We performed two propensity score-matching analyses with (PSM2) or without (PSM1) surgical treatment. Results: 667 and 778 iCCA patients with stage II and IIIB were recruited. After PSM2, there was no survival difference in stage II iCCA patients in hypothetical conditions with similar surgical proportions (p = 0.079). However, OS was significantly worse in patients with T2mN0M0 than T2sN0M0 when the actual surgical proportion existed after PSM1 (p < 0.001). OS was similar between T2mN0M0 and IIIB regardless of whether PSM1 (p = 0.907) or PSM2 (p = 0.699) was performed. The surgical treatment was verified to associate with prognosis. Conclusions: The survival benefit by surgical treatment was existed in Stage II but not in Stage IIIB iCCA patients. The OS for T2mN0M0 will approach that of T2sN0M0 if the surgical proportion is gradually increased.

Hirayama disease (HD) is characterized by the juvenile onset of unilateral or asymmetric weakness and amyotrophy of the hand and ulnar forearm and is most common in males in Asia. A perception of compliance with previous standards of diagnosis and treatment appears to be challenged, so the review is to update on HD. First, based on existing theory, the factors related to HD includes, (1) cervical cord compression during cervical flexion, (2) immunological factors, and (3) other musculoskeletal dynamic factors. Then, we review the clinical manifestations: typically, (1) distal weakness and wasting in one or both upper extremities, (2) insidious onset and initial progression for 3–5 years, (3) coarse tremors in the fingers, (4) cold paralysis, and (5) absence of objective sensory loss; and atypically, (1) positive pyramidal signs, (2) atrophy of the muscles of the proximal upper extremity, (3) long progression, and (4) sensory deficits. Next, updated manifestations of imaging are reviewed, (1) asymmetric spinal cord flattening, and localized lower cervical spinal cord atrophy, (2) loss of attachment between the posterior dural sac and the subjacent lamina, (3) forward displacement of the posterior wall of the cervical dural sac, (4) intramedullary high signal intensity in the anterior horn cells on T2-weighted imaging, and (5) straight alignment or kyphosis of cervical spine. Thus, the main manifestations of eletrophysiological examinations in HD include segmental neurogenic damages of anterior horn cells or anterior roots of the spinal nerve located in the lower cervical spinal cord, without disorder of the sensory nerves. In addition, definite HD needs three-dimensional diagnostic framework above, while probable HD needs to exclude other diseases via “clinical manifestations” and “electrophysiological examinations”. Finally, the main purpose of treatment is to avoid neck flexion. Cervical collar is the first-line treatment for HD, while several surgical methods are available and have achieved satisfactory results. This review aimed to improve the awareness of HD in clinicians to enable early diagnosis and treatment, which will enable patients to achieve a better prognosis.

MLL1 (KMT2A) and MLL2 (KMT2B) are homologous members of the mixed-lineage leukemia (MLL) family of histone methyltransferases involved in epigenomic transcriptional regulation. Their sequence variants have been associated with neurological and psychological disorders, but little is known about their roles and mechanism of action in CNS development. Using mouse retina as a model, we previously reported MLL1’s role in retinal neurogenesis and horizontal cell maintenance. Here we determine roles of MLL2 and MLL1/MLL2 together in retinal development using conditional knockout (CKO) mice. Deleting Mll2 from Chx10+ retinal progenitors resulted in a similar phenotype as Mll1 CKO, but removal of both alleles produced much more severe deficits than each single CKO: 1-month double CKO mutants displayed null light responses in electroretinogram; thin retinal layers, including shorter photoreceptor outer segments with impaired phototransduction gene expression; and reduced numbers of M-cones, horizontal and amacrine neurons, followed by fast retinal degeneration. Despite moderately reduced progenitor cell proliferation at P0, the neurogenic capacity was largely maintained in double CKO mutants. However, upregulated apoptosis and reactive gliosis were detected during postnatal retinal development. Finally, the removal of both MLLs in fated rods produced a normal phenotype, but the CKO in M-cones impaired M-cone function and survival, indicating both cell non-autonomous and autonomous mechanisms. Altogether, our results suggest that MLL1/MLL2 play redundant roles in maintaining specific retinal neurons after cell fate specification and are essential for establishing functional neural networks.

In Fig. 2 (see enclosed file), the authors prepared a mixed solution containing Rb+, Mg2+ and Zn2+ with concentrations close to those (12 h) in the article, and found that the mixed solution does not show anti-bacterial effect either. The two figures indicate that the anti-bacteria effect of Rb+ is not conclusive, which seriously impairs the rigidity of the paper. Considering complex factors influencing the experiments with hydrogels, there might be other effects on the anti-bacteria behavior. However, since the anti-bacteria effect of Rb+ is incorrect, the authors would like to retract the published article.

Abstract Complicated epidermoid cysts (ECs) occur commonly on the back, but few reports have described their management. We present our experience in managing patients with ECs on the back using a keystone-design perforator island flap (KDPIF) reconstruction, thereby focusing on reduction and redistribution of wound tension. Altogether, 15 patients (average age, 48.067 ± 14.868 years) underwent KDPIF reconstructions after complete excision of complicated ECs on the back. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records and clinical photographs of all patients. Final scar appearance was evaluated using the Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS). All patients had ruptured ECs, while 6 patients also had cellulitis of the surrounding tissues. All defects, after complete excision of ECs and debridement of surrounding unhealthy tissues, were successfully covered with KDPIF. Purpose: The Huashan clinical classification system for Hirayama disease has recently been proposed and has been found useful for diagnosis and treatment. So far, however, there has been little in-depth evaluation of its reliability. Thus, this study aimed to assess the reproducibility and reliability of the system.Methods: Patients diagnosed with Hirayama disease between 2019 and 2020 were recruited. Seven spine surgeons from four different institutions, including an experienced group of three and an inexperienced group of four, were trained as observers of the Huashan clinical classification system for Hirayama disease, and these surgeons classified the recruited patients using the system. Then, 2 months later, they repeated the classification on the same patients in a different order. The interobserver and intraobserver agreement between the results was analyzed using percentage agreement and weighted kappa (κ) statistics.Results: A total of 60 patients were included in the analysis. For all the observers, experienced observers, and inexperienced observers, the agreement percentages were, respectively, 78.5% (κ = 0.76), 80.0% (κ = 0.78), and 78.9% (κ = 0.77), indicating substantial interobserver reproducibility. For distinguishing typical (Types I and II) and atypical (Type III) Hirayama disease among the different groups of observers, the percentage agreement ranged from 95.6 to 98.9% (κ = 0.74–0.92), indicating substantial to nearly perfect reproducibility. For suggesting conservative treatment (Types I and III) or surgery (Type II), the percentage agreement ranged from 93.3 to 96.4% (κ = 0.81–0.90), indicating nearly perfect reproducibility. As for intraobserver agreement, the percentage agreement ranged from 68.3 to 81.7% (κ = 0.65–0.79), indicating substantial reliability.Conclusion: The Huashan clinical classification system for Hirayama disease was easy to learn and apply in a clinical environment, showing excellent reproducibility and reliability. Therefore, it would be promising to apply and promote this system for the precise and individualized future treatment of Hirayama disease.

A well-designed loss function can effectively improve the characterization ability of network features without increasing the amount of calculation in the model inference stage, and has become the focus of attention in recent research. Given that the existing lightweight network adds a loss to the last layer, which severely attenuates the gradient during the backpropagation process, we propose a hierarchical polynomial kernel prototype loss function in this study. In this function, the addition of a polynomial kernel loss function to multiple stages of the deep neural network effectively enhances the efficiency of gradient return, and only adds multi-layer prototype loss functions in the training stage without increasing the calculation of the inference stage. In addition, the good non-linear expression ability of the polynomial kernel improves the characteristic expression performance of the network. Verification on multiple public datasets shows that the lightweight network trained with the proposed hierarchical polynomial kernel loss function has a higher accuracy than other loss functions.

Optimization of pretreatment and various gas-solid interaction conditions is necessary for effective carbonation of recycled coarse aggregates derived from concrete wastes (RCA). This study demonstrated the use of linear weighted sum method to simultaneously optimize the pretreatment and carbonation test conditions. The optimization of the test conditions produced simplified, and eco-friendly pretreatments and drastically reduced the carbonation duration of RCA from 72 h to 3 weeks in previous studies to 18 h in this study. In addition, the optimum experimental conditions were validated by casting concrete using the carbonated RCAs. The optimized pretreatment and carbonation conditions were spraying Ca2+-rich wastewater at a level of 60% of the 24 h water absorption of RCA, 12 h air drying and 6 h carbonation at 60 °C. This study also demonstrated that wastewater derived from ready-mix concrete batching plants can be utilized for spraying the RCAs to improve carbonation efficiency. Also, the mechanical and durability properties of concrete prepared with RCAs produced from the optimized conventional carbonation and pressurized carbonation were similar. Therefore, optimized conventional carbonation can be utilized as an alternative to pressurized carbonation. The improved mechanical and durability properties of concrete prepared with carbonated RCAs were attributed to the improved physical properties of carbonated RCAs and improved microhardness of the interfacial transition zone of the new mortar. The simplified, faster, ecofriendly, optimized pretreatment and carbonation conditions opens a new vista for industrial carbonation applications and optimization of gas-solid interactions.

Seed germination is a critical stage during the life cycle of plants. It is well known that germination is regulated by a series of internal and external factors, especially plant hormones. In Arabidopsis, many germination-related factors have been identified, while in rice, the important crop and monocot model species and the further molecular mechanisms and regulatory networks controlling germination still need to be elucidated. Hormonal signals, especially those of abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellin (GA), play a dominant role in determining whether a seed germinates or not. The balance between the content and sensitivity of these two hormones is the key to the regulation of germination. In this review, we present the foundational knowledge of ABA and GA pathways obtained from germination research in Arabidopsis. Then, we highlight the current advances in the identification of the regulatory genes involved in ABA- or GA-mediated germination in rice. Furthermore, other plant hormones regulate seed germination, most likely by participating in the ABA or GA pathways. Finally, the results from some regulatory layers, including transcription factors, post-transcriptional regulations, and reactive oxygen species, are also discussed. This review aims to summarize our current understanding of the complex molecular networks involving the key roles of plant hormones in regulating the seed germination of rice.

Stabilization/solidification (S/S) is a low-cost and high-efficiency remediation method for contaminated soils, however, conventional cement-based S/S method has environmental constraints and sustainability concerns. This study proposes a low-carbon, cement-free, clay-based approach for simultaneous S/S of As and Pb in the contaminated soil, and accordingly elucidates the chemical interactions between alkali-activated clay binders and potentially toxic elements. Quantitative X-ray diffraction and 27Al nuclear magnetic resonance analyses indicated that the addition of lime effectively activated the hydration of kaolinite clay, and the presence of limestone further enhanced the polymerization of hydrates. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that approximately 19% of As[III] was oxidized to As[V] in the alkali-activated clay system, which reduced toxicity and facilitated immobilization of As. During the cement-free S/S process, As and Pb consumed Ca(OH)2 and precipitated as Ca3(AsO4)2·4H2O and Pb3(NO3)(OH)5, respectively, accounting for the low leachability of As (7.0%) and Pb (5.4%). However, the reduced amount of Ca(OH)2 decreased the degree of hydration of clay minerals, and the pH buffering capacity of the contaminated soil hindered the pH increase. Sufficient dosage of lime was required for ensuring satisfactory solidification and contaminant immobilization of the clay-based S/S products. The leachability of As and Pb in high-Ca S/S treated soil samples was reduced by 96.2% and 98.8%, respectively. This is the first study developing a green and cement-free S/S of As- and Pb-contaminated soil using clay minerals as an environmentally compatible binding material. Abstract Background Our aim was to determine the epidemiology and recent changes in the trends of non-functional pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (NF-pNETs) at the population level. In addition, we explored the risk factors that are associated with survival duration. Methods Cases were identified form the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Programme database from 2000 to 2014. Data on incidence and incidence-based (IB) mortality for NF-pNET were obtained from this database. Secular trends in age-adjusted incidence and IB mortality were determined by using the Joinpoint Regression program. Data analyses were performed using chi-square tests, Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards regression. Results Overall, 4766 patients diagnosed with NF-pNET with a median age of 59 years were identified through our descriptive criteria. Caucasian patients accounted for the majority of the study population, and the proportion of patients with distant disease significantly decreased during our study period. Overall, there was an increase in incidence and IB mortality for NF-pNET; however, the rate of increase decreased during the recent years. In addition, the incidence trends of NF-pNET located in the pancreatic head significantly increased, and rates fo increase in IB mortality for NF-pNET in the pancreatic tail decreased in recent years. Additionally, the 1-, 5-, and 10-year survival rates were 79.0, 51.8, 38.1%, respectively. Furthermore, patient age, tumour grade, stage at diagnosis, tumour size, tumour site and resection were associated with mortality. Conclusion Despite increases in incidence and IB mortality, the rate of change in IB mortality for NF-pNET has decreased in recent years. Survival duration displayed a secular increase during the overall period, and the prognosis and survival duration of patients were closely related to the time of diagnosis, age of the patients and size and location of the tumour. Appropriate treatment adjustments based on tumour stage may thus facilitate improvements in patient outcomes.

Proper management of hazardous materials arouses widespread environmental concerns due to its enormous ecological and health impacts. The development of green stabilization/solidification (S/S) technology for resourceful utilization of hazardous materials, as well as the immobilization of potentially toxic elements is of great scientific interests. Cement-based S/S is often considered a low-cost and highly efficient technology, but the environmental sustainability of a broad spectrum of S/S technologies has yet to be evaluated. Therefore, this study assessed the environmental sustainability of S/S technologies for managing two common types of hazardous wastes, i.e., contaminated marine sediment and municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MIFA) by using life cycle assessment (LCA). A total of 17 scenarios under three strategies for sediment and two strategies for MIFA S/S technologies were comprehensively evaluated. The LCA results identified the most preferable S/S technology in each strategy. In particular, Scenario 1 (mixture of sediment with a small percentage of ordinary Portland cement and incinerated sewage sludge ash) of Strategy 1 (use as fill materials) would be the preferred option, as it reduces about 54% and 70% global warming potential compared to those of Scenarios 2 and 3, respectively. This is the first initiative for evaluating the environmental impacts of a wide range of recently developed S/S technologies using green/alternative binders for diverting hazardous wastes from disposal. The results can serve as a decision support for the practical application of the environmentally friendly S/S technology for sustainable remediation.

Objective Periarticular defect coverage remains challenging because multi-vector tension forces affect wound tensile strength. This study presents our experience with keystone design perforator island flap (KDPIF) reconstruction of non-oncological periarticular defects surrounded by the zone of injury and describes the expanding versatility of KDPIF reconstruction for periarticular defects. Methods From June 2017 to July 2019, 12 patients aged 8 to 84 years underwent KDPIF reconstruction to cover periarticular defects. All defects resulted from non-oncological causes and were surrounded by the zone of injury. We reviewed the patients’ medical records and clinical photographs to collect and analyze clinical and operative data. Results The defect size ranged from 0.8 × 1.2 to 7 × 10 cm 2 . The flap size ranged from 1.5 × 3 to 15 × 18 cm 2 . All flaps survived completely. All patients showed favorable functional outcomes without significant limitation in joint range of motion during the follow-up period (range, 4–12 months). The mean observer scar assessment scale summary score and patient scar assessment scale total score were 17.667 ± 5.921 and 20.167 ± 6.478, respectively. Conclusion KDPIF reconstruction is a simple and effective surgical option for coverage of non-oncological periarticular defects surrounded by the zone of injury.

The hydrogen plasma treatment of single crystal diamond was carried out by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition equipment, and the normally-off hydrogen-terminated diamond field-effect transistors (FETs) with different gate lengths were prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD) which deposited HfO2 as gate oxide. We systematically investigated the influence of hydrogen treatment duration, gate length, channel length and gate oxide material HfO2 on the hydrogen-terminated diamond FETs. Results show that the HfO2 gate oxide allows the fabricated FETs to exhibit a normally-off characteristic, which is advantageous for the practical application of power devices. The drain-source current, threshold voltage, subthreshold swing, and Ion/Ioff of the fabricated diamond FETs with gate length of 5 μm are 11 mA/mm, −2.9 V, 3 mS/mm, and 106, respectively. With the increase of the gate length (Lg = 5 μm, 20 μm, 50 μm), the drain current density, threshold voltage, and transconductance of the devices decrease, which is due to the higher channel resistance and inhomogeneity of the hydrogen surface termination. Five recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) treatment techniques including flow-through carbonation, pressurized carbonation, wet carbonation, nano silica (NS) pre-spraying and combined pressurized carbonation with NS pre-spraying, were utilized to improve the performance of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). The characteristics of the stress–strain curves of RACs including peak stress, peak strain, elastic modulus, ultimate strain and toughness were evaluated after using the above RCA treatment techniques. A theoretical model for natural aggregate concrete was used to analyse the stress–strain curve of RAC. Additionally, the carbonation resistance of RAC after using different RCA treatment techniques were investigated. The results showed that the calculated stress–strain curve of RAC based on the theoretical model matched well with the experimental results. Among the three types of carbonation techniques, pressurized carbonation caused the highest improvement in peak stress and elastic modulus of RAC, followed by flow-through carbonation, the last was wet carbonation. The NS pre-spraying method contributed to even higher improvement in peak stress and elastic modulus of RAC than the pressurized carbonation method. The combined pressurized carbonation with NS pre-spraying exhibited the highest enhancement of RAC because both the RCA and the new interface transition zone (ITZ) were improved. The carbonation resistance of RAC was improved after using all the studied RCA treatment techniques.
