This is a brief review of the Civics and Moral Education programme currently in use in Singapore schools. The paper offers an appraisal of the rationale provided in policy statements and of selected official and students' workbook descriptions of curricular content, activities and pedagogic theories. It shows that the Civics and Moral Education programme is more a matter of training students to absorb pragmatic values deemed to be important for Singapore to achieve social cohesion and economic success, rather than moral education as the development of intrinsic commitment to and habituation in the practice of values, defended on autonomous moral considerations and not mere national expediency. Whilst educationists would be inclined to take issue with the programme's ultimate stand on values, they might warm to the pedagogy it prescribes in terms of the need for character‐building by practice and experience, and also the importance of reasoning in the resolving of disputes and dilemmas.

This research has focused on an application, in actual classroom practice, of computerised adaptive testing (CAT) in assessing learning achievement. The concept of CAT, an application of item response theory, has become feasible with the advent of high-speed computers. Basically, the testing in CAT is tailored to an examinee's ability level: the computer first obtains an estimate of the examinee's ability level based on his or her responses to initial test items, and then makes subsequent item-selection decisions that are most appropriate for measuring his/her performance level. This study explored the WALK approach to assessing constructivist learning in mathematics. The study investigated the influence of three factors, namely, elective of study, ability in mathematics and attitude towards mathematics on the performance of Secondary Four Express Course students in the WALK Assessment. The performance of the students in the WALK Assessment was based on their ability to pose, formulate and solve problems. This exploratory study is an attempt to understand the job satisfaction of salaried employees of the life insurance industry in Singapore. The extent to which seven hypothesised factors influence job satisfaction, namely, sex, marital status, age, education level, type of company, length of service with the company and length of service in the industry, was examined. Relationships between job characteristics, organisation characteristics and overall job satisfaction were then investigated. The best predictors of overall job satisfaction were also determined. In nursing, the utilization of computers at work can have an impact on both practice and care of patients. Notwithstanding, anxiety can lead to resistance in nurses' learning and use of computers. Besides, the use of computers may be perceived to be dehumanizing, confusing and uncaring. Hence, some nurses distrust the appropriateness of computer technology as part of nursing and health care.
