Abstract

International audience; The concept of bioreactor is developed since many years in France. To evaluate the humidity distribution in waste mass, sensors and geophysical measurement techniques are needed (Imhoff et al, 2007). The temperature measurement appears as an essential parameter to achieve this goal due to the interpretation facility of the data. Nevertheless, punctual sensor does not offer a global view of the system and the fiber optic sensor seems to be an alternative to cover a large surface (Ettala et al, 2003). The fiber optic sensing technology is known as Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS). In this study, the use of fiber optic sensor to follow reinjection effects in waste mass was tested. For that, a landfill cell managed on mode bioreactor was implemented with 6 different fiber optic sensors located in a horizontal surface of 20m2 at 3.8m depth from the surface below a leachate recirculation pipe. The temperature variations induced by the leachate diffusion were observed and demonstrated the potential of DTS technology to study the temperature evolution of waste mass in bioreactor.

Abstract

International audience; Leachate reinjection in landfills enhances biodegradation processes and may decrease post-closure landfill monitoring. One of the main challenges with respect to the bioreactor methodology, concerns the design of the leachate reinjection system geometry and of reinjection procedures. Although 2-D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) has been used in the past to monitor moisture in a landfill, leachate reinjection bulbs are three-dimensional and therefore 3D electrical resistivity tomography should provide more reliable information on moisture variations in the three dimensions. This paper shows how innovative fast geophysical instrumentation, with a 10-minute period monitoring in 3 dimensions during and after leachate reinjection, can provide 3-D images of resistivity variations over time. The technique can be useful for assessing the efficiency of leachate injection drain design and also to verify where biodegradation processes are occurring.

32. Spontaneous assembly of double-stranded helicates from oligobipyridine ligands and copper(I) cations: structure of an inorganic double helix.

Abstract

Two oligobipyridine ligands containing two and three 2,2'-bipyridine subunits separated by 2-oxapropylene bridges have been synthesized and some of their complexation properties with metal ions have been investigated. In particular, with copper(I) they form, respectively, a dinuclear and a trinuclear complex containing two ligand molecules and two or three Cu(I) ions. In view of the pseudotetrahedral coordination geometry of Cu(I) X bis(bipyridine) sites and of NMR data indicating that the present complexes are chiral, one may assign to these dinuclear and trinuclear species a double-helical structure in which two molecular strands are wrapped around two or three Cu(I) ions, which hold them together. These complexes may thus be termed "double-stranded helicates." Determination of the crystal structure of the trinuclear species has confirmed that it is indeed an inorganic double helix, possessing characteristic features (helical parameters, stacking of bipyridine bases) reminiscent of the DNA double helix. This spontaneous formation of an organized structure by oligobipyridine ligands and suitable metal ions opens ways to the design and study of self-assembling systems presenting cooperativity and regulation features. Various further developments may be envisaged along organic, inorganic, and biochemical lines.
