We consider a system of binary interacting chains describing the dynamics of a group of $N$ components that, at each time unit, either send some signal to the others or remain silent otherwise. The interactions among the chains are encoded by a directed Erd\"os-R\'enyi random graph with unknown parameter $ p \in (0, 1) .$ Moreover, the system is structured within two populations (excitatory chains versus inhibitory ones) which are coupled via a mean field interaction on the underlying Erd\"os-R\'enyi graph. In this paper, we address the question of inferring the connectivity parameter $p$ based only on the observation of the interacting chains over $T$ time units. In our main result, we show that the connectivity parameter $p$ can be estimated with rate $N^{-1/2}+N^{1/2}/T+(\log(T)/T)^{1/2}$ through an easy-to-compute estimator. Our analysis relies on a precise study of the spatio-temporal decay of correlations of the interacting chains. This is done through the study of coalescing random walks defining a backward regeneration representation of the system. Interestingly, we also show that this backward regeneration representation allows us to perfectly sample the system of interacting chains (conditionally on each realization of the underlying Erd\"os-R\'enyi graph) from its stationary distribution. Let $B=(B_t)_{t\geq 0}$ be a standard Brownian motion. The main objective is to find a uniform (in time) control of the modulus of continuity of $B$ in the spirit of what appears in (Kurtz, 1978). More precisely, it involves the control of the exponential moments of the random variable $\sup_{0\leq s\leq t} |B_t-B_s|/w(t,|t-s|)$ for a suitable function $w$. A stability inequality for diffusion processes is then derived and applied to two simple frameworks.

Oscillatory systems of interacting Hawkes processes with Erlang memory kernels were introduced in Ditlevsen (2017). They are piecewise deterministic Markov processes (PDMP) and can be approximated by a stochastic diffusion. First, a strong error bound between the PDMP and the diffusion is proved. Second, moment bounds for the resulting diffusion are derived. Third, approximation schemes for the diffusion, based on the numerical splitting approach, are proposed. These schemes are proved to converge with mean-square order 1 and to preserve the properties of the diffusion, in particular the hypoellipticity, the ergodicity and the moment bounds. Finally, the PDMP and the diffusion are compared through numerical experiments, where the PDMP is simulated with an adapted thinning procedure.

In a previous paper, it has been shown that the mean-field limit of spatially extended Hawkes processes is characterized as the unique solution $u(t,x)$ of a neural field equation (NFE). The value $u(t,x)$ represents the membrane potential at time $t$ of a typical neuron located in position $x$, embedded in an infinite network of neurons. In the present paper, we complement this result by studying the fluctuations of such a stochastic system around its mean-field limit $u(t,x)$. Our first main result is a central limit theorem stating that the spatial distribution associated with these fluctuations converges to the unique solution of some stochastic differential equation driven by a Gaussian noise. In our second main result, we show that the solutions of this stochastic differential equation can be well approximated by a stochastic version of the neural field equation satisfied by $u(t,x)$. To the best of our knowledge, this result appears to be new in the literature.

The study of finite approximations of probability measures has a long history. In (Xu and Berger, 2017), the authors focus on constrained finite approximations and, in particular, uniform ones in dimension $d=1$. The present paper gives an elementary construction of a uniform decomposition of probability measures in dimension $d\geq 1$. This decomposition is then used to give upper-bounds on the rate of convergence of the optimal uniform approximation error. These bounds appear to be the generalization of the ones obtained in (Xu and Berger, 2017) and to be sharp for generic probability measures.

Some recent papers relate the criticality of complex systems to their maximal capacity of information processing. In the present paper, we consider high dimensional point processes, known as age-dependent Hawkes processes, which have been used to model spiking neural networks. Using mean-field approximation, the response of the network to a stimulus is computed and we provide a notion of stimulus sensitivity. It appears that the maximal sensitivity is achieved in the sub-critical regime, yet almost critical for a range of biologically relevant parameters.

We consider spatially extended systems of interacting nonlinear Hawkes processes modeling large systems of neurons placed in Rd and study the associated mean field limits. As the total number of neurons tends to infinity, we prove that the evolution of a typical neuron, attached to a given spatial position, can be described by a nonlinear limit differential equation driven by a Poisson random measure. The limit process is described by a neural field equation. As a consequence, we provide a rigorous derivation of the neural field equation based on a thorough mean field analysis.

The propagation of chaos and associated law of large numbers for mean-field interacting age-dependent Hawkes processes (when the number of processes n goes to +$\infty$) being granted by the study performed in (Chevallier, 2015), the aim of the present paper is to prove the resulting functional central limit theorem. It involves the study of a measure-valued process describing the fluctuations (at scale n --1/2) of the empirical measure of the ages around its limit value. This fluctuation process is proved to converge towards a limit process characterized by a limit system of stochastic differential equations driven by a Gaussian noise instead of Poisson (which occurs for the law of large numbers limit).

We generalize multivariate Hawkes processes mainly by including a dependence with respect to the age of the process, i.e. the delay since the last point. Within this class, we investigate the limit behaviour, when n goes to infinity, of a system of n mean-field interacting age-dependent Hawkes processes. We prove that such a system can be approximated by independent and identically distributed age dependent point processes interacting with their own mean intensity. This result generalizes the study performed by Delattre, Fournier and Hoffmann (2015). In continuity with the work of Chevallier et al. (2015), the second goal of this paper is to give a proper link between these generalized Hawkes processes as microscopic models of individual neurons and the age-structured system of partial differential equations introduced by Pakdaman, Perthame and Salort (2010) as macroscopic model of neurons.

The spike trains are the main components of the information processing in the brain. To model spike trains several point processes have been investigated in the literature. And more macroscopic approaches have also been studied, using partial differential equation models. The main aim of the present article is to build a bridge between several point processes models (Poisson, Wold, Hawkes) that have been proved to statistically fit real spike trains data and age-structured partial differential equations as introduced by Pakdaman, Perthame and Salort.
