We present a theoretical model of facilitated diffusion of proteins in the cell nucleus. This model, which takes into account the successive binding/unbinding events of proteins to DNA, relies on a fractal description of the chromatin which has been recently evidenced experimentally. Facilitated diffusion is shown quantitatively to be favorable for a fast localization of a target locus by a transcription factor, and even to enable the minimization of the search time by tuning the affinity of the transcription factor with DNA. It has long been appreciated that transport properties can control reaction kinetics. This effect can be characterized by the time it takes a diffusing molecule to reach a target -- the first-passage time (FPT). Although essential to quantify the kinetics of reactions on all time scales, determining the FPT distribution was deemed so far intractable. Here, we calculate analytically this FPT distribution and show that transport processes as various as regular diffusion, anomalous diffusion, diffusion in disordered media and in fractals fall into the same universality classes. Beyond this theoretical aspect, this result changes the views on standard reaction kinetics. More precisely, we argue that geometry can become a key parameter so far ignored in this context, and introduce the concept of "geometry-controlled kinetics". These findings could help understand the crucial role of spatial organization of genes in transcription kinetics, and more generally the impact of geometry on diffusion-limited reactions., Comment: Submitted version

We study the Saffman-Taylor instability in a non-Brownian suspension by injection of air. We find that flow structuration in the Hele-Shaw cell can be described by an effective viscosity depending on the volume fraction. When this viscosity is used to define the control parameter of the instability, the classical finger selection for Newtonian fluids is recovered. However, this picture breaks down when the cell thickness is decreased below approximatively 10 grain sizes. The discrete nature of the grains plays also a determinant role in the the early destabilization of the fingers observed. The grains produce a perturbation at the interface proportional to the grain size and can thus be considered as a "controlled noise". The finite amplitude instability mechanism proposed earlier by Bensimon et al. allows to link this perturbation to the actual values of the destabilization threshold., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL

For the Saffman-Taylor instability, the inertia of the fluid may become important for large Reynolds numbers Re. We investigate the effects of inertia on the width of the viscous fingers experimentally. We find that, due to inertia, the finger width can increase with increasing speed, contrary to what happens at small Re. We find that inertial effects need to be considered above a critical Weber number We. In this case it can be shown that the finger width is governed by a balance between viscous forces and inertia. This allows us to define a modified control parameter 1/B', which takes the corrections due to inertia into account; rescaling the experimental data with 1/B', they all collapse onto the universal curve for the classical Saffman-Taylor instability. Subsequently, we try and rationalize our observations. We study the injection of air in a granular suspension. We use a linear Hele-Saw cell filled with a suspension which is displaced by air, leading to a Saffman-Taylor (fingering) instability. For the suspension, we use an iso-dense mixture where the fluid and the particles have the same density. The volume fraction of particles can thus be adjusted over a wide range. We discuss the question of an effective rheology inside the cell as well as the pattern formation as a function of the granular compacity. We report the discovery of a new bright (V$\sim$12.6) cataclysmic variable star identified with the ROSAT X-ray source RX J1643.7+3402. Spectroscopic and photometric observations show it to be a novalike variable sharing some of the characteristics of the SW Sex sub-class of novalike CVs. The spectroscopic period may be either 2\fh575 or 2\fh885, within the period "gap." A photometric modulation with a probable period of 2\fh595 and an amplitude of $\sim$ 0.1 mag in V is present on most nights and could be either a "positive" or a "negative" superhump modulation (depending on the exact spectroscopic period), indicating the presence of a precessing accretion disk in this system. Direct I and V-band imaging of Aql X-1 in quiescence and during outburst maximum shows that the true optical counterpart is the interloper located 0.48" West of the previously known star. We find for the new counterpart V = 21.6 and V-I = 2.2 in quiescence, when its contribution to the total light was 12% in V and 22% in I. Analysis of this photometry and of low-resolution spectra of the sum of both stars, also taken during quiescence, shows that the likely spectral types for the previously known star and the optical counterpart are late G and late K, respectively, reddened by E(B-V) = 0.5 $\pm$0.1., Comment: 4 pages + 4 figures, uses aa.cls, accepted by A&Ap (Letters).
