Despite a growing interest in interdisciplinary research, systematic ways of how to integrate data from different disciplines are still scarce. We argue that successful resource management relies on two key data sources: natural science data, which represents ecosystem structure and processes, and social science data, which describes people's perceptions and understanding. Both are vital, mutually complementing information sources that can underpin the development of feasible and effective policies and management interventions. To harvest the added value of combined knowledge, a uniform scaling system is needed. In this paper, we propose a standardized methodology to connect and explore different types of quantitative data from the natural and social sciences reflecting temporal trends in ecosystem quality. We demonstrate this methodology with different types of data such as fisheries stocks and mangrove cover on the one hand and community's perceptions on the other. The example data are collected from three UNESCO Biosphere reserves and one marine park in Southeast Asia. To easily identify patterns of convergence or divergence among the datasets, we propose heat maps using colour codes and icons for language- and education-independent understandability. Finally, we discuss the limitations as well as potential implications for resource management and the accompanying communication strategies.This article is part of the theme issue ‘Nurturing resilient marine ecosystems’.

It is widely believed that children will choose furniture that has the same color as their preferred color. Furthermore, for different categories of furniture, the color they preferred for furniture is consistent. A study of 508 adolescent Chinese children between the ages of 12 and 16 has been carried out to explore whether color preference influences their choice of furniture when they are provided with various color options (16 chromatic and five achromatic colors). This work tested six items of furniture in two functional spaces (study and bedroom space). Findings indicate that adolescent children's color preferences did indeed affect their furniture choice, but the extent varies with the categories of furniture. Furthermore, this study reveals that children's preference for furniture in different functional spaces is slightly different. Some effects of gender and age were also explored. This work discusses the implications of adolescent color preference and color choice for children's furniture color design.

Multimaterial textiles are frequently employed to attain a certain function or aesthetic effect. The multimaterial assemblies face recycling limitations due to challenges to sort and separate the component materials. A one‐step melt extrusion approach to process two mixed common textile polymers, polyamide 6 (PA6), and polypropylene (PP), into PA6:PP hybrid fibers is reported in this study. PA6:PP hybrid fibers were produced in four different configurations; PA6‐50 (50 wt% PA6), PA6‐60 (60 wt% PA6), PA6‐65 (65 wt% PA6), and PA6‐80 (80 wt% PA6). The PP component was sacrificially removed from the hybrid fibers and the resultant PA6 fiber structure was analyzed. The SEM images show the development of PA6 microfibers in PA6‐50 and PA6‐60 hybrid fibers with mean diameters of 0.76 μm and 1.13 μm upon fiber drawing, respectively. In PA6‐65 hybrid fibers, the PA6 microfibers were found along with areas where PA6 was encapsulating the PP. Thermal and mechanical properties of the untreated and treated hybrid fibers were also investigated. PA6‐60 hybrid fibers were processed into single jersey knitted fabrics and treated to obtain PA6 microfibers fabrics. An imaging workflow to categorise images into business graphics and pictorial images based on spatiochromatic information is demonstrated. Studies on three computational characteristics (lightness frequency distribution, average chroma distribution, and Fourier spectrum) show that differences between business graphics and pictorial images can be discriminated mathematically. To enhance the performance of the image categorisation workflow, a multilayer perceptron neural network was designed and experimentally evaluated, and which performed with an accuracy of 95% using a database consisting of 57 randomly selected images.

Sixteen students were involved in an experiment to describe the appearance of colour samples. These students were divided into two groups: design background and chemistry/engineering background.Design participants react to samples with images and adjectives describing their feelings and emotions.They tend to use evocative, emotional, and associative terms which are also related to use of a wide variety of semantic fields. On the other hand, chemistry/engineering participants focused heavily on colour and surface objectively. Although they used limited sematic fields compared to design participants, they used more precise language in their description. In terms of describing the process of changing the appearance of one sample to another, participants from chemistry/engineering used technical terms and described the process more systematically in comparison to the design participant group. The main focus of this research was to investigate differences in colour communication between participants from the disciplinary backgrounds. These comparisons are not intended to suggest negative or positive judgements by the researchers but to describe the different values of these participants. This research provides evidence that people from different disciplines who need to collaborate in colour design use different colour vocabularies.

Impulsivity and arousal are two similar yet distinct emotional and behavioral states that have been shown to be influenced by color in many fields, such as clothing, and environment design. This series of studies investigates the fundamental theory of how color impacts on people’s impulsivity and arousal states. To achieve this goal, psychophysical methods were used to examine the impact of color environment on impulsivity and arousal. Two main factors were used to quantify them: response time and error rate in problem solving. The psychophysical experiment was designed to examine whether, in a particular color environment, the response time and error rate were different. Participants sat in front of a large TV screen showing different colored backgrounds to complete a range of psychometric tests. The color backgrounds varied in hue. During the experiment, participants were required to give their responses to each of the psychometric tests as quickly and accurately as possible. The results showed that different colors can significantly influence response time and error rate, which suggests that color has a distinct influence on impulsivity and arousal. Gender difference have also been investigated. This paper mainly discusses hue influence on impulsivity and arousal. The influence of chroma along with hue will be explored in the next paper.

In the previous paper (Part 1), the effect of hue on impulsivity and arousal were studied. From those results, yellow, red and orange were selected for further investigation since participants’ performance was consistent with a low arousal state (high error rate and long response time) on the yellow background and high arousal state (low error rate and short response time) on the red background whereas orange was the color that tended to result in high impulsivity. This paper will mainly investigate the fundamental theory of how chroma influences people’s impulsivity and arousal states. The same as in the previous paper, the two main factors used to measure impulsivity and arousal in this paper are also response time and error rate for each colored background. In the psychophysical experiment, participants were looking at backgrounds in three hues (red, yellow and orange) with different chroma levels on screen to complete a range of psychometric tests. During the experiment, participants gave their response to the psychometric test as quickly and accurately as possible. From the results it can be seen that chroma has a significant influence on participants’ response time and error rate, and influences impulsivity and arousal. Gender difference will also been discussed in this paper.

In recent years, evidence has emerged for the existence of many diverse types of RNA, which play roles in a wide range of biological processes in all kingdoms of life. These molecules generally do not, however, act in isolation, and identifying which proteins partner with RNA is a major challenge. Many methods, in vivo and in vitro, have been used to address this question, including combinatorial or high-throughput approaches, such as systematic evolution of ligands, cross-linking and immunoprecipitation and RNA immunoprecipitation combined with deep sequencing. However, most of these methods are not trivial to pursue and often require substantial optimization before results can be achieved. Here, we demonstrate a simple technique that allows one to screen proteins for RNA-binding properties in a gel-shift experiment and can be easily implemented in any laboratory. This assay should be a useful first-pass tool for assessing whether a protein has RNA- or DNA-binding properties, prior to committing resources to more complex procedures
