In dental implant insertion, an artificial foundation is prepared for the prosthetic device, which involves the surgical positioning of the implant in the jaw bone. The success of dental implants relies on the osseointegration process. The biomechanical factors, such as stress and strain, developed during the insertion affect the jawbone and its surroundings. In this current study, the stresses during the implant insertion in the mandibular jawbone bone are analyzed using three-dimensional explicit dynamic analysis, and the Cowper–Symonds model is implemented with the damage model. The implant’s design has a substantial impact on stress distribution within the cancellous bone during the insertion procedure. The stress variation takes place as the implant moves into the pre-drilled hole. This is because of the contact between the bone and the fixture on the implant. The upper edge of the predrilled site shows that the stresses are more at the crestal region of the implant due to surface area. There is a gradual increase in the stress level as the implant reaches the lower edge from the top edge. This is because of the concept of mechanical interlocking. Clinicians can use this information to anticipate and address potential stress-related challenges during implant placement.

Restorative dentistry is the repairing of damaged teeth and restoring oral health and function. Dental implants are typically placed within the cortical bone of the jaw to provide stability and support for prosthetic restorations. The successful restoration of complex anatomical features of the maxillary anterior is difficult for prosthodontists. Using a 3D slicer, CT scan images were used to create a detailed three-dimensional model of the maxilla bone. This study utilizes ANSYS Workbench, a finite element software program, to analyze the abutment angles, ranging from 0° to 25°, and the impact stress distribution within peri-implant bone. The outcomes of our studies align with and substantiate certain evidence in the literature documenting bone resorption, specifically at the level of the implant neck and near the cortical bone. The study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of angled abutment stress patterns in the bone surrounding dental implants, offering valuable insights for clinical applications in critical areas of the mouth.

The selection of abrasive material and parameters of the Air-Abrasion device for a particular application is a crucial detail. However, there are no standard recommendations or manuals for choosing these details; the operator must depend on his experience and knowledge of the procedure to select the best possible material and set of parameters. This short review attempts to identify some of the effects that the selection of material and parameters could have on the performance of the Air-Abrasion procedure for a particular application. The material and parameter data are collected from various studies and categorized according to the most popular materials in use right now. These studies are then analyzed to arrive at some inferences on the performance of Air-Abrasion materials and parameters. This review arrives at a few conclusions on the effectiveness of a material and parameter set, and that there is potential for developments in the area of standardizing parameter selection; also, there is scope for further studies on Bio-Active Glass as an alternative to the materials currently used in Air-Abrasion.

This study aims to assess and compare the impact of Monolithic Zirconia (MZ) and In-Ceram Zirconia (ZP) superstructures on stress distribution within implants and D2/D4 bone densities under 200 N vertical and oblique occlusal loads using three-dimensional finite element analysis via ANSYS WORKBENCH R2. The analysis employed maximum and minimum von Mises stress values. Modeling an implant (4.2 mm diameter, 10 mm length) and abutment (0.47 mm diameter), with an 8 mm diameter and 6 mm length single crown, the research identified lower von Mises stresses in D2 cancellous bone with the MZ model under vertical loading. Conversely, under oblique loading, the ZP model exhibited maximum von Mises stresses in D4 bone around the implant. This underscores the critical need to consider physical and mechanical properties, beyond mere aesthetics, for sustained implant success. The findings highlight the effect of material composition and stress distribution, emphasizing the necessity of durable and effective implant treatments.

This investigation delves into the dynamics of stress distribution during particle impacts on Incisor teeth, revealing the significant roles of particle size, impact angle, and standoff distance. An explicit dynamics study highlights a crucial revelation: optimal outcomes are achieved with a particle size of 250 µm, a 5 mm standoff distance, and an 80-degree impact angle, resulting in maximal stress manifestation. The analysis highlights a direct relationship between particle size and stress distribution, where larger particles amplify stress levels, emphasizing its pivotal role in determining stress distribution patterns. Additionally, an investigation of the Signal-to-Noise (SN) ratio reaffirms this trend, validating the direct correlation between stress distribution magnitude and abrasive particle size. Interestingly, variations in standoff distance and impact angle exhibit relatively minor effects. The ANOVA further strengthens these findings, with lower p-values for particle size and impact angle, highlighting their substantial contributions to stress distribution. Exploring interactions uncovers significant relationships between abrasive particle size and impact angle, as well as impact angle and standoff distance, with implications for stress distribution optimization. This study offers a broad investigation of the effects of abrasive particle size, standoff distance, and handle angulation on stress distribution during air abrasive procedures in dentistry. Through advanced computational modelling techniques, we interpret the complex interactions between these parameters and their impact on tooth surface integrity. The research findings not only provide valuable insights into optimizing procedure parameters for enhanced safety and efficacy but also contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of dental materials and techniques.

Kidney stones, known medically as nephrolithiasis, present a significant health concern globally, particularly in regions such as India and the Middle East. Despite extensive research, the complexity of ureteral obstruction due to kidney stones remains a challenge in urology. This study addresses this gap by analysing the effects of obstruction in a three-dimensional model of the ureter with a constant diameter, simulating various percentages of blockage. Through computational analysis, the pressure and velocity effects on the ureter wall are explored, providing insights into the dynamics of obstructed ureters. Building upon previous research, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the factors influencing flow patterns and pressure variations within the urinary tract. Additionally, findings from this study may lead to advancements in non-invasive assessment methods for diagnosing and treating ureteral obstruction caused by kidney stones. Furthermore, insights gained from this research could potentially inform clinical decision-making, leading to improved management strategies and better outcomes for patients affected by this debilitating condition. The novelty of this work lies in its comprehensive analysis of the effects of obstruction on the ureteral wall, offering valuable implications for urological practice and patient care.

The term “contact area” refers to the total surface area of two entities in direct physical touch. When discussing an artificial hip joint, “contact area” refers to the surface area of contact between the components of the artificial hip joint (ball and cup) positioned inside the patient. Several methods can be used to figure out the contact area of an artificial hip joint, such as finite element analysis and traditional experiments on contact mechanics with hip joint simulators. The contact area in an artificial hip joint ensures load distribution. For optimal and long-term performance, the prosthetic hip joint’s contact area must be well understood for design, fitting, and monitoring. This study presented a novel method to estimate the liner surface contact area due to interaction contact in the artificial hip joint using a computer-aided design (CAD) program. This study also contrasted numerical approaches utilizing computer-aided engineering software and theoretical predictions based on Hertz theory with three-dimensional processes using CAD software to determine the contact area in the inner liner. There were no significant discrepancies in the outcomes of the three approaches.

AbstractThe hip joint is one of the most essential joints for transmitting weights to the lower abdomen during day-to-day activities. Loosening of hip implants is mostly caused by wear. The wear assessment during the design stage offers a clear sense of the implant’s life expectancy, and modest adjustments in the design may also greatly enhance the implant’s life expectancy, lowering the probability of revision surgery. Linear wear is estimated at the contact surfaces of the femoral head to the acetabular cup and the acetabular cup to the backing cup in this study. In this work, oval-shaped hip implant is considered with a femoral head diameter of 28 mm, an acetabular cup thickness of 4 mm, and a backing cup thickness of 2 mm. The Archard’s law used to estimate the linear wear rate. It is observed that when the acetabular cup is made of UHWMPE and the stem, femoral head, and backing cup are made of CoCr, the least overall deformation is 0.394 mm during walking loads. When the stem is considered Ti−6Al−4 V and the acetabular cup of UHWMPE, the minimum wear between the femoral head and acetabular cup is 0.063 mm/year. During a typical standing posture, an acetabular cup-to-backing cup wear rate of 0.007 mm/year is estimated. Overall, the CoCr material combination had the lowest wear rate in the four activities considered for this work. These implants designs can be 3D-printed and further can be tested in a hip simulator under the same loading conditions.

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the use of natural fibers as reinforcements in composites. This trend is mainly driven by their eco-friendly nature and wide availability. The objective of this research is to explore the extensive potential of combining Banana Fiber with Tyre Rubber Particles (TRP) as elastomeric fillers in natural fiber composites, focusing primarily on their applications in the automotive and aeronautical industries, particularly in terms of acoustic response. The composite sequences were named as NFC-I to NFC-V, where NFC represented Natural Fiber Composites. To thoroughly investigate the acoustic properties of these innovative composites, experimental analysis on the impedance tube was conducted along with numerical simulations on the Ansys Harmonic Acoustics ^® module with Transmission Loss (TL) as the key parameter. An orthotropic material model based on the chopped fiber RVE (Representative Volume Element) was developed on the Ansys 2022 R1 ^® Material Designer Module which could be deemed as the novelty of the current work. From the results, it was seen that within the designated frequency bands, specifically the low (67–400 Hz), medium (400–1900 Hz), and high (1900–6300 Hz) ranges, the NFC-4 (15 wt% of TRP) composite consistently demonstrated the lowest average TL values. Conversely, NFC-3 (27 wt% of TRP) consistently showcased the highest TL values, reaching a peak of 27.13 dB in the low-frequency range and 46.73 dB in the high-frequency range. The results obtained from the impedance tube experiments align remarkably well with the numerical simulation outputs, demonstrating the reliability of the numerical model in estimating the transmission loss of composite laminatesa crucial parameter for evaluating acoustic performance.

In replacement surgery of the hip joint, an implant is replaced into the natural femur which recreates the articulation and functionally of a natural joint. Total hip replacement is significantly increasing by the day worldwide and is likely to increase by 174% by 2030. Primary revision is another major concern for total hip replacement with revision rates likely to increase by 137%. The first part of the article states the basic anatomy of the hip joint, different ligaments in the hip, the disorders associated with the joint, and evaluation of total hip arthroplasty. In the second part some of the major works are highlighted followed by a detailed discussion about different design considerations and wear-related issues in hip joints. More emphasis is given to the tribological behavior of implants under different conditions. The design aspects and several parameters which affect the wear rate in implants are summarized. Also, different testing methods which are used both in experimental and numerical techniques are reported to estimate the wear rates in hip implants with the evolution of hip implants since the early 20th century, in terms of different designs, materials and wear hip implant arthroplasty is known as one of the best advancements in healthcare. Further research is needed to establish to improve the life expectancy of hip implants.

The total hip prosthesis is considered one of the greatest advancements in orthopaedic surgery in the early 20th century. In hip implant replacement, the stem is inserted into the femur and femoral head, acetabular cup, and backing cup over the stem. This felicitates the normal range of motion and stability of an individual compared to the natural hip joint. Several different types of biomaterials are used in the total hip prosthesis. Where the combination of UHMWPE, CoCrMo alloy, and Ti-6Al-4 V alloy is widely used due to their superior mechanical properties over the others. In this work, these material combinations are used for the analysis with changes in the femoral head sizes from 24 mm to 48 mm to know the best size with the better material combination. Static structural analyses are carried out using Ansys R-19. Two sets of analyses are performed for two different material combinations between Ti-6Al-4 V, CoCr, and UHMWPE. The circular cross-shaped stem with change in femoral head sizes from 24 mm to 48 mm is used for analysis. The acetabular cup and backing cup thickness are kept constant throughout the study. The size of the acetabular cup and backing cup is considered 6 mm and 4 mm respectively. Loading and boundary conditions are considered as per the ASTM standards. Hip implant with Ti-6Al-4 V for stem and a 4 mm backing cup of CoCr and 6 mm acetabular cup of UHMWPE shown the least stress value of 203.48 MPa over all the other models which are used in the analysis. This work shows the analysis to know the effect of the change in femoral head size and also the change in material combinations used in hip implants. Further experimental work can be carried out to validate the results obtained in the current work.

Due to intrinsic or extrinsic conditions, the number of car accidents has increased currently across the globe. Drivers must be assured that they can avoid these problematic conditions. According to the statistics, about 10,000 are dead, and more than a million people are wounded each year in India. Hence, improvement in the safety of vehicles is of utmost importance to shoot down the number of accidents. The automotive bumper beam is one of the essential components in passenger cars. Bumper beams reduce or minimize the extent of impact caused at the front and rear ends during a collision in passenger vehicles. It absorbs the impact energy. The important physical parameters in the bumper beams such as material, size, and design to improve the extent of crashworthiness are studied and discussed in this current work. Comparative analysis between 2 mm thickness and 4 mm thickness bumper with honeycomb structure is studied. An ideal design composition is considered. This helps in advanced safety precautions.

Hip implants consist of a stem, femoral head, acetabular cup, and backing cup. There is a wide variety of sizes and lengths. Their adaptability is limited because of the inter-anatomical variations. There is no single fit-for-all implant design that satisfies the orthopedic requirement satisfactorily. In this work, the trapezoidal-shaped stem with three different cross-sections is considered. The femoral head size, acetabular cup thickness, backing cup thickness, and trunnion geometry were varied to arrive at the best possible combination. ANSYS R-19 was used to perform the static analysis. It is found that trapezoidal-shaped profile two has the least amount of stress and total deformation. The von Mises stresses were found to be higher when the femoral head size was between 32 mm to 40 mm in profile two. It was also observed that the femoral head with 24 mm has the least stress compared to higher head sizes. The maximum von Mises stress-induced in profile two was 141.0 MPa, the total deformation of 0.04436 mm and elastic strain of 7.6 × 10−4 mm/mm. Trunnion interface does not have a significant role with respect to the structural strength of the implant. From the findings of this study, it is inferred that profile two shaped stems with the femoral ball size of 36 mm, acetabular cup thickness of 2 mm and backing cup thickness of 1mm is best suited for the hip replacement. The major outcome of this study is the utilization of the DoE method to determine the optimized value of the implant.

Hip implants are available in various shapes and sizes. This study aims to select the better hip implant stem design and the optimal material that can be used for the implant. For all the material combinations, radial clearance of 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 had been given between each of the junctions. Analytical calculation using Hertz contact stress formulation to find the contact pressure has been employed for a load of 2300N, which goes hand in hand with the Finite element method (FEM). The results showed that the optimal combination consists of a CoCr alloy stem, femoral head, and cup material, paired with a UHMWPE liner, for the most effective performance. This study thoroughly evaluates various hip implant options and offers important insights into their effectiveness. The results of this research will assist in choosing the most appropriate hip implant design and material, leading to better patient outcomes and advancements in medical technology for the betterment of mankind. The hip joint plays an important role in providing stability to the human body. Factors such as aging, wear, and tear, make the hip joint degenerate and, in such cases, the same to be replaced through hip arthroplasty surgeries. The background of this study aims to investigate the contact consequence between the artificial femoral head and the acetabular cup for different bearing couples during one-leg stance and standing up from a chair, utilizing the finite element method. The three-dimensional finite dynamic contact model has been developed with different material combinations. The results obtained by the present finite element model align well with the previously available literature. The parameters investigated include maximum von Mises stress, maximum contact pressure and deformation for different material combinations. The results reveal that the pair i.e., Alumina on Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) exhibits lower contact pressure, von Mises Stress and deformation. Therefore, the material pair i.e., Alumina on UHMWPE can be employed in the Total hip replacement (THR) to mitigate contact consequences under both static and dynamic loading conditions, thereby enhancing the durability of the artificial joints.
