Abstract

No significant biochemical or radiological features of vitamin D deficiency were found in groups of juvenile and adult epileptics and control groups of non-epileptic patients in hospitals for the mentally retarded. There was evidence of hepatic enzyme induction in patients on anticonvulsants, in that urinary D-glucaric acid concentration and excretion were raised. No effect was found of prolonged anticonvulsant therapy on bone densitometry, but in children immobility was closely associated with decreased bone density. The evidence suggests that disuse osteoporosis is the major bone disease in these mentally retarded children. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

33. FTIR microspectroscopy study of composition fluctuations in extruded amylopectin–gelatin blends

Abstract

The spatial variation in the composition of nonexpanded biopolymer blends prepared by extrusion of mixtures of gelatin with either native or pregelatinized waxy maize starch was studied using a 30-μm aperture FTIR microspectroscopy technique. The ratio of the areas of the “saccharide” bands (953–1180 cm−1) and the amide I and II bands (1483–1750 cm−1) was used to monitor the relative distributions of the two components of the blend. Two calibration methods were used to obtain amylopectin concentration values from the ratios of the IR bands. The results suggested a high degree of heterogeneity in these blends, despite the thorough mixing expected by twin-screw extrusion processing. The concentration fluctuations were greater for the blends produced by extruding gelatin and native waxy maize starch mixtures. This was in agreement with the reduced degree of conversion of the starch granules when extruded in the presence of gelatin. The FTIR 2-dimensional maps obtained suggested that in the blends produced from either native or pregelatinized starch at all concentrations studied (25/75, 50/50, and 75/25 amylopectin/gelatin) the gelatin constituted the continuous phase. The effect of the spatial resolution on the FTIR microspectroscopy results was considered and the proposed interpretation was verified by the use of polarized light microscopy and FTIR microspectroscopy acquired at higher spatial resolution (10 μm). © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Abstract

Hydrogen adsorption on a Cu/MgO catalyst is investigated using in situ 1H NMR. The adsorption is largely homogeneous, demonstrating reasonable agreement with the Langmuir isotherm and only small variations in the frequency shift and spin−lattice relaxation time with increasing coverage. The catalyst is investigated under flowing gas conditions, and the hydrogen/deuterium exchange kinetics are studied. The activation energy for exchange is measured to be 96 kJ mol-1. The 1H variable-temperature NMR probe developed here and used for the in situ adsorption isotherm and the flowing gas experiments is also described.

41. Signal-Transfer Functions in Threshold and Suprathreshold Vision

Abstract

A model of threshold and suprathreshold vision in relation to variation of object size is proposed. An important factor in suprathreshold vision is the signal-contrast loss in optical and neural components; in threshold vision, an important additional factor is the manner in which the brain acts on retinal noise. The signal-contrast loss has been measured in terms of a suprathreshold signal-transfer function for circular signals. In threshold vision, the noise processes are shown to predominate and the signal-contrast losses to be insignificant. Therefore signal-transfer functions cannot be deduced solely from threshold measurements; indeed, peak performance in suprathreshold vision is reached at object size one-tenth that at threshold. In suprathreshold vision, performance is shown to depend on a balance between optical unsharpness and neural sharpening (lateral inhibition). Contrast loss due to neural unsharpness (summation) appears to be insignificant in foveal vision and only partially significant in peripheral vision. Hence neural properties such as transfer functions, receptive-field sizes, and the spatial extent of neural interactions cannot be deduced from over-all measurements on the eye without correction for optical unsharpness.

42. A Note on the Distribution of Radioactive Colloidal Gold Following Intraperitoneal Injection

Abstract

The distribution of 198Au following intraperitoneal injection has been studied by analysis of autopsy specimens from two patients. A method of calculating the ß dosage from the concentration of the disseminated radioisotope is described. Many of the tissues receive a considerable additional dosage of ? radiation from the residual 198Au in the abdominal cavity.
