Introduction: When planning for breast augmentation, it is important to consider not only implant choice, surgical technique and patient desires, but also the chest wall shape and deformities or irregularities, which remain often underestimated. They can be responsible for implant malposition and breast asymmetry after augmentation. Chondrocostal junction prominence is a minor but frequent chest wall deformity. The aim of this study is to report a new technique for sculpturing isolated chondrocostal prominence deformities in patients undergoing breast augmentation. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted to review surgical outcomes of a novel technique for costal prominence sculpturing and reshaping in patients undergoing breast augmentation. After reaching the subpectoral space, an inferiorly-based perichondral–periosteal flap is harvested just above the prominence. Once the deformity is corrected, the perichondral flap is repositioned over the sculpted rib. Results: A total of six patients presenting with isolated chondrocostal prominence underwent bilateral breast implant placement and costal reduction using the described technique. Three patients were primary augmentations while the remaining patients were two secondary breast augmentation and one augmentation mastopexy. No complications were reported. No additional pain was referred at the side of rib remodelling in comparison with the contralateral breast. All the patients were satisfied with cosmetic results. Conclusions: The described technique for contouring of isolated chondrocostal deformities is fast, easy reproducible and offers advantages over the standard partial rib reduction technique. It can prevent implant malposition and projection asymmetry, eventually enhancing breast augmentation outcomes. Background: Heart transplantation in patients with situs inversus is challenging, especially in terms of reconstruction of the systemic venous return. Several rerouting techniques have been presented but are associated with vulnerability to external compression, which might cause hemodynamic instability, especially in the presence of chest deformity. In this study, we report a rare case of successful heart transplantation in the presence of situs inversus and pectus excavatum. Case presentation: A 55-year-old man, with a history of surgeries for corrected transposition of the great arteries with ventricular septal defect, was registered for heart transplantation owing to progression of heart failure. Subsequently, he had undergone a left ventricular assist device implantation; 14 years after registration, he underwent transplantation of the heart with normal anatomy. The inferior vena cava was reconstructed by anastomosing the left atria with a counterclockwise rotation of the donor heart and by lengthening the recipient inferior vena cava with a conduit made of the residual right atrial tissue. The superior vena cava was reconstructed using a donor innominate vein harvested with sufficient length. After successful weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass, the chest could not be closed because the heart was compressed owing to chest deformity, resulting in hemodynamic instability. Therefore, to exclude the left lung, a left pericardial screen was created using a bovine pericardium, allowing the chest to be closed with acceptable hemodynamics. The patient suffered postoperatively from a higher venous pressure, suggesting an obstruction of venous return early after surgery. The obstruction gradually resolved, and the patient was transferred for rehabilitation. Conclusions: Heart transplantation in the presence of situs inversus is challenging; moreover, the presence of pectus excavatum further complicates the procedure. The paradoxically larger left lung and chest deformity compressed and impaired reconstructed systemic venous return. Although intrathoracic exclusion of the left lung was effective, an intraoperative or early postoperative thoracoplasty for pectus excavatum was also a viable option. Abstract Background The aim of our study was to evaluate long-term patient satisfaction and quality-of-life improvement in grown-up patients treated for pectus excavatum with the Nuss procedure in the pediatric age, searching for correlation between preoperative characteristics and long-term outcomes. Methods At first, we performed a retrospective analysis of pediatric patients undergoing the Nuss procedure in a 5-year period. We administered, at least 5 years after bar removal, a single-step questionnaire to focus on the assessment of patient satisfaction with operative results. Results Most patients stated general health and exercise tolerance were improved after the operation. High levels of overall satisfaction were reported after Nuss repair, with 95.6% of patients being either satisfied or very satisfied. Overall, 87.0% of patients stated they would have the operation again. The high overall satisfaction after surgery was not correlated with the deformity severity and the presence of physical symptoms before correction. Conclusions Patients expressed high levels of satisfaction in terms of self-image and quality of life. Improvement in cosmetic appearance and health in general translated in most patients in an improvement of social life. The degree of postoperative pain after the Nuss procedure is the overriding factor in the patient’s perception of the quality of the postoperative course.

Introduction: The most common chest wall deformities are pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum. Surgical repair of these deformities via minimally invasive technique using pectus bars is commonly preferred by numerous thoracic surgeons. Despite this common choice for treatment, the duration of the bar stay, the bar removal process, the possible complications and ways to prevent them have been debated over the years and still there is no single decision. Aim: To determine the decision making, surgical outcomes and negative factors in the bar removal process. Material and methods: There were 1032 patients underwent bar removal between 2006-2020 and their data was recorded prospectively. We analyzed patients' demographics, family history, Haller index, bar count, body mass index, stabilizer and wire usage, length of hospital stay, time until bar removal, incision side and complications retrospectively. Results: There was no significant correlation between BMI and surgery time (p = 0.748). There was no statistically significant correlation between the age groups and the number of pectus bars removed. The other factors showed no significant difference. The surgery time was found to be significantly longer in those with callus tissue (p = 0.002). Conclusions: These findings suggest that pectus bars can be left in place for a shorter time than the standard 3-year interval without any additional recurrence risk and without compromising quality of life. As a result, patients with persistent pain after pectus repair should be well evaluated for the possibility of life-threatening complications during bar removal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The severity of pectus excavatum is classified by the Haller Index (HI) and/or Correction Index (CI). These indices measure only the depth of the defect and, therefore, impede a precise estimation of the actual cardiopulmonary impairment. We aimed to evaluate the MRI-derived cardiac lateralization to improve the estimation of cardiopulmonary impairment in Pectus excavatum in connection with the Haller and Correction Indices. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included a total of 113 patients (mean age = 19.03 ± 7.8) with pectus excavatum, whose diagnosis was verified on cross-sectional MRI images using the HI and CI. For the development of an improved HI and CI index, the patients underwent cardiopulmonary exercise testing to assess the influence of the right ventricle's position on cardiopulmonary impairment. The indexed lateral position of the pulmonary valve was utilized as a surrogate parameter for right ventricle localization. Results: In patients with PE, the heart's lateralization significantly correlated with the severity of pectus excavatum (p ≤ 0.001). When modifying HI and CI for the individual's pulmonary valve position, those indices are present with greater sensitivity and specificity regarding the maximum oxygen-pulse as a pathophysiological correlate of reduced cardiac function (χ2 10.986 and 15.862, respectively). Conclusion: The indexed lateral deviation of the pulmonary valve seems to be a valuable cofactor for HI and CI, allowing for an improved description of cardiopulmonary impairment in PE patients. Sternal cleft accompanied by pectus excavatum is a rare type of congenital anomaly of the chest wall. Surgical correction is a suitable approach to restore the heart, large vessels, and respiratory dynamics early. This is a report of the successful surgical correction of upper sternal cleft anomaly accompanied by pectus excavatum in a child. The pectus excavatum was corrected without the use of any prosthesis. The cleft was closed by primary approximation with enough dissected pectoralis major muscle and partial thymectomy, mobility, and flexibility ensured by pectus correction. This study aimed to analyze prenatal diagnosis, perinatal outcomes, and postnatal follow-up in fetuses with ectopia cordis (EC). This retrospective analysis accessed 31 patients with EC who were either diagnosed or referred to a tertiary Fetal Medicine centers for EC diagnosis in Brazil, Germany, Italy, and Poland. We analyzed prenatal diagnosis, perinatal outcomes, and follow-up in these patients. Our study included a cohort of 31 fetuses with EC, 4 and 27 of whom had partial and complete protrusion of the heart through a ventral defect in the thoracoabdominal wall, respectively. EC was diagnosed by fetal echocardiography at a mean gestational age of 20.3 ± 8.6 weeks (range, 8–35 weeks). Of the four cases, in which the karyotype was performed, all of them had a normal result (1 – 46,XX and 3 – 46,XY). Five patients showed conotruncal abnormalities and six ventricular septal defects. Termination of pregnancy (TOP) was performed in 15 cases (48%) and seven pregnant women had spontaneous fetal demise (22.5%). Of the seven fetuses that were born alive, four of them died, and three infants underwent surgery. Among these three infants, all of them survived, one was 5 months, 13 years old and 29 years old at the time of study completion. Ectopia cordis is associated with high mortality rates and intracardiac/extra-cardiac defects. Ventricular septal defects and conotruncal anomalies were the more common intracardiac defects associated with EC. • What is currently known about this topic? • Pectus carinatum, the second most common congenital chest wall deformity, is associated with cosmetic complaints for which surgical repair can be indicated. The minimally invasive Abramson method is currently the preferred surgical treatment option for this deformity. • What new information is contained in this article?. • No systematic review on outcomes of minimally invasive repair of pectus carinatum (MIRPC) by the Abramson method is present in literature. This review provides an overview of the outcomes after MIRPC by the Abramson method to determine its effectiveness, with subjective postoperative esthetic outcomes as primary outcome measure. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the outcomes after minimally invasive pectus cartinatum repair (MIRPC) by the Abramson method to determine its effectiveness. The PubMed and Embase databases were systematically searched. Data concerning subjective postoperative esthetic outcomes after initial surgery and bar removal were extracted. In addition, data on recurrence, complications, operative times, blood loss, post-operative pain, length of hospital stay, planned time to bar removal and reasons for early bar removal were extracted. The postoperative esthetic result, was selected as primary outcome since the primary indication for repair in pectus carinatum is of cosmetic nature. Six cohort studies were included based on eligibility criteria, enrolling a total of 396 patients. Qualitative synthesis showed excellent to satisfactory esthetic results in nearly all patients after correctional bar placement (99.5%, n = 183/184). A high satisfaction rate of 91.0% (n = 190/209) was found in patients after bar removal. Recurrence rates were low with an incidence of 3.0% (n = 5/168). The cumulative postoperative complication rate was 26.5% (n = 105/396), of whom 25% required surgical re-intervention. There were no cases of mortality. Minimally invasive repair of pectus carinatum through the Abramson method is effective and safe. Its efficacy is demonstrated by the excellent to satisfactory esthetic results in 99.5% and 91.0% of patients after respectively correctional bar placement and implant removal. Abstract Background Chest wall abnormalities are a poorly studied complication after treatment for childhood cancer. Chest wall abnormalities are not well-described in the literature, and little is known on the impact on daily life of survivors. Methods We investigated prevalence and risk factors of chest wall abnormalities in childhood cancer survivors in a nationwide, population-based cohort study (Swiss Childhood Cancer Survivor Study) with a questionnaire survey. We then interviewed a nested sample of survivors to validate types of chest wall abnormalities and understand their impact on the daily life of survivors. Results Forty-eight of 2382 (95%CI 2–3%) survivors reported a chest wall abnormality. Risk factors were older age at cancer diagnosis (16–20 years; OR 2.5, 95%CI 1.0–6.1), lymphoma (OR 3.8, 95%CI 1.2–11.4), and central nervous system tumors (OR 9.5, 95%CI 3.0–30.1) as underlying disease, and treatment with thoracic radiotherapy (OR 2.0, 95%CI 1.0–4.2), surgery to the chest (OR 4.5, 95%CI 1.8–11.5), or chemotherapy (OR 2.9, 95%CI 1.0–8.1). The nature of the chest wall abnormalities varied and included thoracic wall deformities (30%), deformations of the spine (5%) or both (55%), and scars (10%). Chest wall abnormalities affected daily life in two thirds (13/20) of those who reported these problems and necessitated medical attention for 15 (75%) survivors. Conclusion It is important that, during follow-up care, physicians pay attention to chest wall abnormalities, which are rare late effects of cancer treatment, but can considerably affect the well-being of cancer survivors.

Objective: Pectus Excavatum's (PE) surgical treatment should be patient specific. In this article, we aimed to compare parallel and cross bar variations of the Nuss method and analyze if there is any difference in results. Methods: In this study, a total of 891 patients treated with the Nuss method between August 2005 and February 2018 were considered. These were retrieved from a prospectively recorded PE database. Of these, 276 double-bar patients were included in the study. Patients with parallel bars (225 cases) and patients with crossed bars (51 cases) were compared in terms of age, gender, symmetry, family history, additional anomalies, mean operation time, postoperative hospital stay (days) and hospital readmission rate. Results: The mean age was measured at 20.7 for parallel bar patients and 20.1 for crossed bars patients. There was no statistically significant difference in terms of age, gender, and mean operation time between two groups. On the other hand, statistical significance was found between two groups when analyzing the deformities' symmetry, patients' family history and additional anomalies. The statistically significant difference of postoperative hospital stay between two groups is clinically negligible. Postoperative hospital readmission rates due to serous pleural effusion were found to be significantly increased in patients with crossed bars (p < 0.001). Conclusion: While pleural effusion requiring readmission was statistically more frequent in cross bars, in centers where thoracentesis can be managed, Nuss method can still be applied safely, even in cases with difficult, complex deformities. Introduction: Pectus carinatum is a bony deformity of the anterior chest wall and has a strong negative impact on patient self-esteem and quality of life. During adolescence, the deformity is often flexible and can be treated with a compressive orthosis. Compliance with orthoses yields deformity correction and self-esteem improvement (J Pediatr Surg. 2013;48:1055-1059). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the compliance to and patient satisfaction with the custom University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Pectus Carinatum Orthosis (PCO) design. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey of the patients who received orthotic treatment for pectus carinatum at UCSF between August 2012 and June 2018. Potential subjects were contacted and asked to complete the Pectus Carinatum Evaluation Questionnaire (PCEQ), which was administered online via Research Electronic Data Capture. The PCEQ measures compliance as well as the physical and psychosocial impact of orthotic treatment for pectus carinatum. Results were compiled and summarized using nonparametric descriptive statistics. Results: Of the 35 consented subjects, 12 (11 male patients and 1 female patient aged 12–17 years) completed the survey. Subjects reported an average wear time of 12.7 hours per day, 5 days a week. Seven reported no symptoms, three experienced chest pain, two reported difficulty breathing, and one had back pain. Eight reported happiness with the results of their orthotic treatment. Conclusion: Wear times reported by the subjects were comparable with those reported in other studies looking at prefabricated pectus orthoses. However, there were lower reports of pain associated with the UCSF treatment than in other studies. Background: Minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum (MIRPE) improves clinical outcomes and chest wall morphology. However, asymmetry in patients with pectus excavatum (PE) remains as an important issue, even after surgery. Here, we evaluated the benefit of double-bar technique in achieving a symmetric chest wall., Methods: This retrospective study included 79 patients with PE who underwent MIRPE between 2017 and 2021. The patients were divided into the double- or non-double-bar groups. Asymmetric degree (AD) and sternal rotation angle (SRA) were used to assess the severity of asymmetry based on computed tomography (CT) images. The primary outcome was the change in radiologic parameters. Secondary outcomes were clinical results, including hospital stay, pain scores, and complication rates. Subgroup analysis of patients with preoperative asymmetric PE was performed., Results: Patients in the double-bar group (n=23) were younger than those in the non-double-bar group (n=56). Additionally, the double-bar group exhibited lower pain scores and shorter hospital stay. Based on radiological assessments, the double-bar group demonstrated a greater decrease in AD without compromising improvement in the Haller index (HI). The benefit of the double-bar technique was more obvious among patients with asymmetry with a preoperative AD >5%, resulting in a significant reduction in AD. In this subgroup, a better correction of sternal rotation was observed., Conclusions: The double-bar technique may be a promising option for correcting asymmetry in patients with PE. Purpose Scoliosis, chest wall deformities and pulmonary involvement are common features of Marfan syndrome (MFS). We aimed to assess the impact of spinal and chest wall deformities on pulmonary function in paediatric MFS patients with a surgically managed spinal deformity. Methods In this multicentre retrospective study, spirometry, lung volumes and radiographic imaging were performed on 26 MFS patients between the ages of seven and 18 years who were undergoing planned spinal fusion surgery for spinal deformity. A correlation analysis assessed the relationship between radiographic measurements of spinal and chest wall deformities and predicted total lung capacity (TLC), forced vital capacity (FVC) and the ratio between forced expiratory volume in one second and FVC (FEV1/FVC). Results In total, 18 patients (70%) had impaired pulmonary function. Thoracic kyphosis (mean 19.3°; -32° to 54°) had a strong positive correlation with FEV1/FVC (r = 0.65; p < 0.001). Significant decrease in FEV1/FVC below 80% occurred at kyphosis under 15° (p = 0.004). Kyphosis had a moderate negative correlation with FVC (r = -0.43; p = 0.03). Chest wall deformity had a strong negative correlation with FEV1/FVC (r = -0.61; p = 0.001). The magnitude of the thoracic curve (mean 55.2°; 28° to 92°) had a significant moderate negative correlation with TLC (r = -0.45; p = 0.04). Conclusion In MFS, three factors correlate with decreased pulmonary function measures: hypokyphosis, increasing chest wall deformity and increasing coronal curve magnitude. Hypokyphosis and increased chest wall deformity correlated with diminished FEV1/FVC; increasing thoracic spinal curvature with diminished TLC. Further analysis with a larger cohort will help better define the relationship between these deformities and pulmonary function in this unique population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, most institutions have changed the way patients are assessed or investigated. Using novel non-contact technology, it is possible to continuously monitor the lung function of peri-operative patients undergoing cardiothoracic procedures. Primarily, this results in increased patient surveillance, and therefore, safety. Many centres, globally, are starting to use structured light plethysmography (SLP) technology, providing a non-aerosol generating procedure in place of traditional spirometry. While more evidence is needed, our clinical usage; previous and on-going studies; demonstrate definite potential that SLP is a valuable tool.

Background: The minimally invasive pectus carinatum (PC) surgery described by Abramson has been performed in many centers. We have been using this technique since 2011. This article describes our experience with PC correction. Methods: Between 2011 and 2016, 32 patients at our institution underwent minimally invasive repair of a PC deformity. All patients presented with cosmetic complaints. The deformity involved the lower sternum (all had chondrogladiolar type PC), and three patients had asymmetrical deformities. All operations followed the principles defined by Abramson. Results: Satisfactory esthetic results were achieved in our patients. The hospital stay averaged 5.3 days (range 4–7 days). The most common early complication was pneumothorax, and the most common late complication was wire suture breakage. Conclusion: The Abramson technique is an effective, minimally invasive procedure for PC with shorter operating and hospitalization times and low morbidity rates.

Osteochondromas (OC), or exostoses, are developmental defects rather than true neoplasms. Misdirected physeal bone growths give rise to OC. It causes cartilage-capped bony extensions to emerge from the lateral outlines of endochondral bones. We discuss a case of OC in a 35-year-old female who presented with severe chest wall deformity and breathlessness due to compromised left lung function. CT scan showed a vast osteochondroma arising from the ventral surface of the scapula, which was palpable in the supra mammary region on the left side. The tumor mass was completely excised from the base of the stalk. Her breathlessness and compromised left lung function returned to normal in the post-op period. However, the chest deformity was corrected over two months. The article provides insights into the presentation in a patient with such a massive tumor due to its location. Aim: To communicate the experience in the treatment of pectus excavatum in the National Institute of Thorax. Materials and Method: Descriptive study with follow-up. Data of variables of interest were collected through the review of clinical records. Patients operated between March 2007 and April 2018 were included. Results: 86 patients operated with the Nuss technique were included in the period described. Of them, 74 male patients. The average age at the time of surgery was 17.8 years. The main reason for consultation was due to cosmetic detriment that corresponded to 41.8% of the patients. Except in 1 patient, in all the rest a single bar was occupied. In our series, there were 12 patients who presented some operative complication and 1 patient died. Up to the end of the follow-up, 61 bars were removed, 2 of them in non-scheduled surgery. There are 20 bars in situ and 4 patients of which there is no registration due to abandonment of controls. Discussion: Pectus excavatum is the most frequent of the deformities of the chest wall, it is 4 to 6 times more frequent in men than in women. In general, patients are asymptomatic, although some may have cardiopulmonary symptoms. The repair with minimally invasive surgery with Nuss technique appears today as the goldstandard of management. Conclusion: The management of patients with pectus excavatum in our Institution is similar to that reported in the international literature. Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most common chest wall deformity in adolescents. The main complaint is cosmetic, but many patients also complain about exertional dyspnea. This may lead to the patient seeking surgery of the thoracic wall deformity (TWD). The assumption is that both, appearance and physical complaints will have a negative effect on being able or wanting to engage in sport activity. In December 2011 a prospective registration of sport activity in pectus excavatum patients started. Sport activity was assessed using questionnaires (CHQ, SF-36 and PEEQ). Measurements were taken before corrective surgery (preoperatively) and 12 months postoperatively. 127 patients have been included. The number of patients who were active in sports preoperatively and after 12 months remained steady. The type of sport activity, individual sport or team sport showed no significant change. The CHQ showed that physical activity caused fewer complaints (p < 0.001). The PEEQ showed a decrease in difficulties with sports activity performance after 12 months (p < 0.001). Twelve months after surgical correction of PE there was no significant increase in the number of patients performing sport activities. Background: Chest wall deformity after tissue expansion for breast reconstruction is less recognized than complications such as infection, hematoma, skin necrosis and capsular contracture. However, the condition should not be discounted because pain, rib fracture and dyspnea may occur in severe cases. The aim of this study is to evaluate the extent of chest wall deformity quantitatively using computed tomography (CT) and to identify risk factors for this condition after tissue expansion. Methods: The subjects were 34 patients who underwent unilateral two-stage reconstruction and were examined by multidetector-row CT before expander surgery and during maximal tissue expansion. Chest wall deformity was assessed quantitatively using the Chest Wall Deformity Index (CWDI), which was measured before expander surgery (pre-CWDI) and during maximal tissue expansion (post-CWDI). Post minus pre (post−pre) CWDI was used as the index of chest wall deformity in the assessment of risk factors. Result: Post-CWDI was significantly higher than pre-CWDI (3.66 ± 3.23% vs. 0.03 ± 2.74%, P < 0.001 by paired t test), showing that chest wall deformity occurred after maximum expansion. In a multiple linear regression model, capsular contracture emerged as a significant predictor of increased post−pre CWDI (P = 0.003). BMI was a significant predictor of decreased post−pre CWDI (P = 0.003), but this result may have been due to the measurement method. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that chest wall deformity is common after maximum tissue expansion for breast reconstruction. Background: Extensive burn scars and contractures are likely to restrict the movements of the chest wall which may affect the pulmonary ventilation by restricting its expansion during inspiration. We designed this study to evaluate the effect of burn contractures of chest wall on pulmonary function and to estimate the effect of contracture release on pulmonary functions in patients with compromised PFT.Methods: Pulmonary function tests (PFT) of 20 patients having chest wall contractures involving more than 50% of the chest circumference were studied. Restrictive lung disease was defined as forced vital capacity (FVC) value less than 80% of predicted normal for the age, weight, and height of that patient. Patients with a restrictive pattern on PFT were subjected to the surgical release of the contracture. PFT was repeated one month after the surgery which was compared with the initial report.Results: Of the 20 patients included in the study, 5 (25%) patients had a restriction pattern on PFT. 1 patient had a mild restriction, 2 patients had moderate restriction and 2 patients had a severe restriction of pulmonary function. The mean duration of contracture was 58.2±15.75months in patients with a pulmonary restriction as compared to 29.87±6.21months in patients with a normal PFT (p=0.001). All patients having a restrictive pattern on PFT had contracture involvement of >75% of the chest wall circumference (p=0.0036). The mean forced vital capacity (FVC) increased from 1.94L preoperatively to 2.11L after surgical release of the contracture (p=0.047). However, the restriction pattern in PFT did remain.Conclusion: Long standing chest wall contractures and contractures involving >75% of the chest circumference are likely to cause a restrictive pattern on PFT. Poland’s syndrome (PS) is a congenital monolateral deformity that may involve breast, chest wall, and upper limb with different degrees of clinical expressions. In some cases, the problem is mainly cosmetic, and the reconstruction should be performed to achieve minimal scarring and donor site morbidity. The authors describe a case report of a male patient with PS who developed a severe capsular contraction after 25 years implant reconstruction, who was treated after explantation using free gracilis flap (FGF). In this patient, only the pectoralis major muscle was missing. An FGF was performed to reconstruct the anterior axillary fold and the soft tissue defect. There was no flap loss, the patient had a clearly improved appearance of the chest wall, and the pain syndrome was solved. In this case report, we demonstrate our experience with the use of an FGF for chest wall reconstruction in male patients with PS after prosthesis explantation.

Background: We used an Abramson technique for minimally invasive repair of pectus carinatum in patients who preferred surgery to brace therapy, had been unsuccessfully treated via brace therapy, or were unsuitable for brace therapy because of a rigid chest wall. Methods: Between July 2011 and May 2015, 16 patients with pectus carinatum underwent minimally invasive surgery. Results: The mean age of the patients was 24.35±13.20 years (range, 14–57 years), and all patients were male. The percentage of excellent aesthetic results, as rated by the patients, was 37.5%, and the percentage of good results was 56.25%. The preoperative and postoperative Haller Index values were 2.01±0.19 (range, 1.60–2.31), and 2.22±0.19 (range, 1.87–2.50), respectively (p-value=0.01), and the median hospital stay was 7.09±2.91 days (range, 5–15 days). Only one patient experienced postoperative complications. Conclusion: Minimally invasive repair is effective for the treatment of pectus carinatum, even in adult patients.

Background: pectus excavatum (PE) is the most common congenital deformity of the thoracic wall. Lately, significant achievements have been made in finding new, less invasive treatment methods for PE. However, most of the experimental work was carried out without the help of an animal model. In this report we describe a method to create an animal model for PE in Sprague-Dawley rats. Methods: We selected 15 Sprague-Dawley rat pups and divided them into two groups: 10 for the experimental group (EG) and 5 for the control group (CG). We surgically resected the last four pairs of costal cartilages in rats from the EG. The animals were assessed by CT-scan prior to surgery and weekly for four consecutive weeks. After four weeks, the animals were euthanized and the thoracic cage was dissected from the surrounding tissue. Results: On the first postoperative CT, seven days after surgery, we observed a marked depression of the lower sternum in all animals from the EG. This deformity was present at every CT-scan after surgery and at the post-euthanasia assessment. Conclusions: By decreasing the structural strength of the lower costal cartilages, we produced a PE animal model in Sprague-Dawley rats.
