In this paper we argue that investigators using citizen science should attend, as much as possible, to certain ethical considerations when conceptualizing projects by embracing 1) inclusivity (finding ways to include those who have traditionally been excluded), 2) adaptation (modifying projects to provide greater opportunities for varied participation), 3) sensitivity (ensuring projects take into account and respect cultural traditions and beliefs), 4) safety (protocols that protect the physical, psychological, and cultural safety of citizen scientists and society at large), and 5) reciprocity (benefits for citizen scientists). These recommendations are particularly important when engaging in collaborative or co-created citizen science projects with marginalized groups. We provide examples of how citizen science projects can be designed and adapted in ways that ensure that they follow The Golden Rule, and make them appealing to, and achievable for, a greater number of individuals in our diverse global society.

Background and Objectives Global organizations are advocating that older persons' voices should guide communities in age-friendly design. An important aspect of age friendliness to enable daily function and health is ensuring that physical activity can occur, regardless of age, within local neighborhoods. Research Design and Methods This study used a specific citizen science approach, Our Voice , to engage a sample (N = 13) of older adults (60 or older) in Festac Town, Nigeria. The citizen scientists' roles were to assess and identify how different aspects of the neighborhood environment act as supports or barriers to their physical activity participation. They were individually enabled using a tablet-based mobile application called the Stanford Healthy Neighborhood Discovery Tool to record a total of 156 geocoded photos and 151 commentaries of neighborhood environmental features that facilitate or hinder physical activity in and around their neighborhoods. In a guided process, the following occurred: collaborative discussions of findings with other citizen scientists to determine common targets, setting of priority targets for change, and brainstorming strategies and solutions. Results Facilitators of physical activity included: pedestrian and traffic facilities (e.g. traffic lights, walkways); green areas and parks; multigenerational community features (e.g. programs/facilities); opportunities for social connection (e.g. neighborhood associations, churches); safety of destinations and services; and public toilets. Barriers to physical activity included: hazardous walkways/traffic; noise pollution; refuse, selling of public parks; crime (e.g. kidnapping, criminal hideouts); no safe drinking water; and ageism. The priorities for changes were social connectivity; improved pedestrian and traffic facilities; and green and beautiful environments. Discussion and Implications In this study, both physical and social aspects of the environment were deemed important for older Nigerians to enable physical activity in their local community. Using a feminist standpoint theoretical orientation, we explored the ways consumption of sexually explicit materials (SEM) could be beneficial to women's overall well-being. For this study, 28 women were recruited from two female-oriented sexual health education establishments in Ontario, Canada and asked to participate in qualitative interviews. Our findings suggest that women derive personal and social benefits from their engagement with SEM. Overall, this research draws attention to the ways SEM consumption may strengthen women's sexual subjectivity and provide outlets for women to learn about and experiment with their bodies and erotic selves. Although academic publications over the past several decades have steadily reported the perspectives of female academics related to the topic of motherhood, less attention has been paid to the specific factors that influence when and why PhD students have children. With greater numbers of doctoral graduates entering postdoctoral studies (many at an age when the average Canadian is contemplating having their first child), it seems necessary that student voices be added to discussions concerning family in the academy. This personal narrative essay intends to explore some of the factors that might impact family planning for doctoral students. Utilizing journal entries written by the author during her undergraduate and graduate training, issues such as the timing of pregnancy in the life course, pronatalism, the presumed existence of a woman's biological clock, and unintended pregnancy will be critically examined.
