We present the results of an experimental study of multiple scattering of positively charged high energy particles in bent samples of monocrystalline silicon. This work confirms the recently discovered effect of a strong reduction in the rms multiple scattering angle of particles channeled in the silicon (111) plane. The effect is observed in the plane orthogonal to the bending plane. We show in detail the influence of angular constraints on the magnitude of the effect. Comparison of the multiple scattering process at different energies indicates a violation of the law of inverse proportionality of the rms angle of channeled particles with energy. The UA9 setup, installed in the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN, was exploited for a proof of principle of the double-crystal scenario, proposed to measure the electric and the magnetic moments of short-lived baryons in a high-energy hadron collider, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Linear and angular actuators were used to position the crystals and establish the required beam configuration. Timepix detectors and high-sensitivity Beam Loss Monitors were exploited to observe the deflected beams. Linear and angular scans allowed exploring the particle interactions with the two crystals and recording their efficiency. The measured values of the beam trajectories, profiles and of the channeling efficiency agree with the results of a Monte-Carlo simulation., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures

Spin-flop transition (SFT) consists in a jump-like reversal of antiferromagnetic magnetic moments into a non-collinear state when the magnetic field increases above the critical value. Potentially the SFT can be utilized in many applications of a rapidly developing antiferromagnetic spintronics. However, the difficulty of using them in conventional antiferromagnets lies in (a) too large switching magnetic fields (b) the need for presence of a magnetic anisotropy, and (c) requirement to apply magnetic field along the correspondent anisotropy axis. In this work we propose to use artificial ferrimagnets in which the spin-flop transition occurs without anisotropy and the transition field can be lowered by adjusting exchange coupling in the structure. This is proved by experiment on artificial Fe-Gd ferrimagnets where usage of Pd spacers allowed us to suppress the transition field by two orders of magnitude., Comment: article, 5 pages, 3 figures

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) uses a multi-stage collimator system to absorb the growing halo of circulating beams to protect and ensure reliable operation of superconducting magnets. A similar system is planned for the Future Circular Collider (FCC). In anticipation of the LHC operation with high luminosity, research is being conducted to improve the collimation system. Studies have shown that one of the solutions to improve beam collimation is to use channeling in a short curved crystal, which acts as a primary collimator, throwing particles deep into the secondary collimator by channeling. This system is very sensitive to the angular position of the crystal and possible vibrations of different nature. In this paper, we propose a different approach to crystal collimation based on the volume reflection of particles from curved crystallographic planes in a sequence of crystals. The positive qualities of this scheme are substantiated and a multi-strip crystal device capable of implementing it is proposed.

Ideas of use the particle channeling in bent crystals for steer the beams have been checked up and advanced in many experiments. However, until now, this method of beam formation has limitations in application, since the channeling process involves beam particles with low angular divergence, limited by the angle of Lindhard. Here we test at the U-70 accelerator two crystal devices, the focusing crystal and multistrip crystal, which expand the boundaries of application of bent crystals at accelerators., Comment: we need significant corrections

We present the experimental observation of the reduction of multiple scattering of high-energy positively charged particles during channeling in single crystals. According to our measurements the rms angle of multiple scattering in the plane orthogonal to the plane of the channeling is less than half that for non-channeled particles moving in the same crystal. In the experiment we use focusing bent single crystals. Such crystals have a variable thickness in the direction of beam propagation. This allows us to measure rms angles of scattering as a function of thickness for channeled and non-channeled particles. The behaviour with thickness of non-channeled particles is in agreement with expectations whereas the behaviour of channeled particles has unexpected features. In this paper, we discuss an experimental layout for the two-crystals scenario at the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) accelerator. The research focuses on a fixed target setup at the circulating machine in a frame of the Physics Beyond Colliders (PBC) project at CERN. The UA9 experiment at the SPS serves as a testbench for the proof of concept, which is planning to be projected onto the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) scale. The presented in the text configuration was used for the quantitative characterization of the deflected particle beam by a pair of bent silicon crystals. For the first time in the double-crystal configuration, a particle deflection efficiency by the second crystal of $0.188 \pm 3 \cdot 10^{-5}$ and $0.179 \pm 0.013$ was measured on the accelerator by means of the Timepix detector and Beam Loss Monitor (BLM) respectively. In this setup, a wide range angular scan allowed a possibility to \textit{in situ} investigate different crystal working regimes (channeling, volume reflection, etc.), and to measure a bent crystal torsion., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures. The problem of creation of high energy neutrino beams on the basis of modern and future circular proton accelerators with the help of traditional technology seems to be expensive and difficult. Because of this, we propose the solution of this problem based on the usage of focusing bend single crystals. In the paper we demonstrate the possibilities of acceptance and focusing of a pion beam with the help of a crystal optical lens system. We present the results of a comprehensive study of magnetic, magneto-transport and structural properties of nonstoichiometric MnxSi1-x (x=0.51-0.52) films grown by the Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) technique onto Al2O3(0001) single crystal substrates at T = 340{\deg}C. A highlight of our PLD method is the using of non-conventional (shadow) geometry with Kr as a scattering gas during the sample growth. It is found that studied films exhibit high-temperature (HT) ferromagnetism (FM) with the Curie temperature TC ~ 370 K accompanied by positive sign anomalous Hall effect (AHE); they also reveal the layered polycrystalline structure with a self-organizing grain size distribution. The HT FM order is originated from the bottom interfacial nanocrystalline layer, while the upper layer possesses the low temperature (LT) type of FM order with TC = 46 K, gives essential contribution to the magnetization below 50 K and is homogeneous on the nanometer size scale. Under these conditions, AHE changes its sign from positive to negative at T < 30 K. We attribute observed properties to the synergy of self-organizing distribution of MnxSi1-x crystallites in size and peculiarities of defect-induced FM order in PLD grown polycrystalline MnxSi1-x (x~0.5) films.

The bent crystals are applied on large accelerators to deflect particle beams in process of extraction and collimation. Recently the proposals of fixed target researches in the LHC are formulated. For realization of this program not only deflection but also focusing the LHC beam by bent crystals can be used. In the given work experimental results on 50 GeV proton beam focusing with the help of novel crystal device are reported. The positive property of this device is opportunity to work near the circulating beam of an accelerator, including the LHC.

Recently it was proposed to apply a bent single crystal with decreasing curvature instead of uniform bending for improvement of extraction and collimation of a circulating beam in particle accelerators. In the given paper created crystal devices with a variable curvature, realizing this idea are described. Results of measurement of curvature along a crystal plate are informed. It is shown, that with the help of the developed devices it is possible to carry out also high energy beam focusing. The T-980 bent crystal collimation experiment at the Tevatron has recently acquired substantial enhancements. First, two new crystals - a 16-strip one manufactured and characterized by the INFN Ferrara group and a quasi-mosaic crystal manufactured and characterized by the PNPI group. Second, a two plane telescope with 3 high-resolution pixel detectors per plane along with corresponding mechanics, electronics, control and software has been manufactured, tested and installed in the E0 crystal region. The purpose of the pixel telescope is to measure and image channeled (CH), volume-reflected (VR) and multiple volume-reflected (MVR) beam profiles produced by bent crystals. Third, an ORIGIN-based system has been developed for thorough analysis of experimental and simulation data. This report overviews studies accomplished in the U70 proton synchrotron of IHEP-Protvino during the recent two decades. Major attention is paid to a routine application of bent crystals for beam extraction from the machine. It has been confirmed experimentally that efficiency of beam extraction with a crystal deflector of around 85% is well feasible for a proton beam with intensity up to 1012 protons per cycle. Another trend is to use bent crystals for halo collimation in a high energy collider. New promising options emerge for, say, LHC and ILC based on the "volume reflection" effect, which has been discovered recently in machine study runs at U70 of IHEP (50 GeV) and SPS of CERN (400 GeV)., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures

The article presents an overview of the results obtained at U-70 accelerator of IHEP to use bent crystals for beam control of high energy protons. Considerable attention is paid to practical application of crystals to create new modes of beam extraction from the accelerator to ensure experiments on high energy physics. It was shown that with the crystal deflectors the efficiency reached ~ 90% with intensity up to 10^12 protons per cycle of U-70. The results of experiments on the use of crystals to enhance the effectiveness of the absorption of the unused beam, as well as the use of crystals for collimation of beam halo are presented. It has been shown that the use of a bent crystal with a variable curvature radius makes it possible to reduce the fraction of dechanneled particles by an order of magnitude. This effect enables the strong reduction of the particle density at the edge of a collimator or the partition of a septum upon the multiturn extraction of a beam from a ring accelerator. In particular, the beam extraction efficiency at the U-70 synchrotron and Large Hadron Collider can be increased to 95 and 99.65%, respectively., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The efficiency of the beam extraction and collimation systems in circular accelerators with the use of the channeling effect in a bent crystal is determined. The dependences of the extraction efficiency on the geometrical parameters of the crystal (its length, thickness, and bending angle), the azimuthal location of the system components, and the offset of the septum or scraper are presented. The influence of crystal imperfections (amorphous layers, misorientation, and torsion) on the efficiency of the systems is considered, and their tolerances are proposed. It is shown that an extraction efficiency of >95% can be attained over a wide energy range from 2 GeV to 7 TeV by optimizing the crystal parameters and the positions of the system components., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

The UA9 experimental equipment was installed in the CERN-SPS in March '09 with the aim of investigating crystal assisted collimation in coasting mode. Its basic layout comprises silicon bent crystals acting as primary collimators mounted inside two vacuum vessels. A movable 60 cm long block of tungsten located downstream at about 90 degrees phase advance intercepts the deflected beam. Scintillators, Gas Electron Multiplier chambers and other beam loss monitors measure nuclear loss rates induced by the interaction of the beam halo in the crystal. Roman pots are installed in the path of the deflected particles and are equipped with a Medipix detector to reconstruct the transverse distribution of the impinging beam. Finally UA9 takes advantage of an LHC-collimator prototype installed close to the Roman pot to help in setting the beam conditions and to analyze the efficiency to deflect the beam. The possibilities of the extraction and collimation of a circulating beam by a new method due to the reflection of particles in crystals with axial orientation were experimentally investigated in the Fall-2010 run at the U_70 synchrotron. Such crystals have positive features, because the axial potential is five times larger than the planar potential. It has been shown that the collimation efficiency can reach 90% due to axial effects in the crystal. Losses of the circulating beam on a collimator have been reduced by several times; this makes it possible to suppress the muon jet near the steel collimator of the circulating beam., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures

New crystal technique - array of bent strips and a fan-type reflector, based on thin straight plates - have been used for research of extraction and collimation a circulating beam in the U-70 accelerator at the energy 50 GeV and 1.3 GeV. It is shown, that new devices can effectively steer a beam in a wide energy range. For protons with energy 50 GeV efficiency of extraction and collimation about 90 % has been achieved which is record for this method. Reduction of particle losses in 2-3 times was observed also in accelerator at application of different crystals in comparison with the usual one-stage collimation scheme of beam with a steel absorber., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

The process of photoproduction of electron-positron pairs in bent single crystals is considered in this paper. In particular, it is shown that the probability of the process for gamma-quanta with energies from 100 GeV on is significantly higher than the one in an amorphous medium. A possible scenario for the experimental validation of the process is discussed and the positive features of the photoproduction in bent crystals compared to straight ones are underlined from the point of view of possible applications., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Influence of volume capture on a process of volume reflection of ultrarelativistic particles moving in bent single crystals was considered analytically. Relations describing various distributions of particles involving in the process, the probability of volume capture and behavior of channeling and dechanneling fractions of a beam were obtained. New type of radiation in crystals is predicted and investigated in computer simulation. It is shown that process of volume reflection of electrons and positrons in bent crystals is accomplished with high-power radiation of photons. Volume reflection radiation has intensity comparable with known channeling radiation, but it is less sensitive to entrance angle and sign of charge of a particle. This paper presents the physical background for particle extraction from IHEP accelerator using short bent silicon crystals, analyses the results of the studies, considers in detail the regime of simultaneous work of crystal extraction and several internal targets.
