Abstract

GRBs produced by the collapse of massive stars are usually found near the most prominent star-forming regions of star-forming galaxies. GRB 171205A happened in the outskirts of a spiral galaxy, a peculiar location in an atypical GRB host. In this paper we present a highly-resolved study of the molecular gas of this host, with CO(1-0) observations from ALMA. We compare with GMRT atomic HI observations, and with data at other wavelengths to provide a broad-band view of the galaxy. The ALMA observations have a spatial resolution of 0.2" and a spectral resolution of 10 km/s, observed when the afterglow had a flux density of ~53 mJy. This allowed a molecular study both in emission and absorption. The HI observations allowed to study the host galaxy and its extended environment. The CO emission shows an undisturbed spiral structure with a central bar, and no significant emission at the location of the GRB. Our CO spectrum does not reveal any CO absorption, with a column density limit of < 10^15 cm^-2. This argues against the progenitor forming in a massive molecular cloud. The molecular gas traces the galaxy arms with higher concentration in the regions dominated by dust. The HI gas does not follow the stellar light or the molecular gas and is concentrated in two blobs, with no emission towards the centre of the galaxy, and is slightly displaced towards the southwest of the galaxy, where the GRB exploded. Within the extended neighbourhood of the host galaxy, we identify another prominent HI source at the same redshift, at a projected distance of 188 kpc. Our observations show that the progenitor of this GRB is not associated to a massive molecular cloud, but more likely related to low-metallicity atomic gas. Abstract

Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) originate from ultra-relativistic jets launched from the collapsing cores of dying massive stars. They are characterised by an initial phase of bright and highly variable radiation in the keV-MeV band that is likely produced within the jet and lasts from milliseconds to minutes, known as the prompt emission. Subsequently, the interaction of the jet with the external medium generates external shock waves, responsible for the afterglow emission, which lasts from days to months, and occurs over a broad energy range, from the radio to the GeV bands. The afterglow emission is generally well explained as synchrotron radiation by electrons accelerated at the external shock. Recently, an intense, long-lasting emission between 0.2 and 1 TeV was observed from the GRB 190114C. Here we present the results of our multi-frequency observational campaign of GRB~190114C, and study the evolution in time of the GRB emission across 17 orders of magnitude in energy, from $5\times10^{-6}$ up to $10^{12}$\,eV. We find that the broadband spectral energy distribution is double-peaked, with the TeV emission constituting a distinct spectral component that has power comparable to the synchrotron component. This component is associated with the afterglow, and is satisfactorily explained by inverse Compton upscattering of synchrotron photons by high-energy electrons. We find that the conditions required to account for the observed TeV component are not atypical, supporting the possibility that inverse Compton emission is commonly produced in GRBs.

Abstract

We present radio and optical afterglow observations of the TeV-bright long gamma-ray burst 1901140 at a redshift of z = 0.425, which was detected by the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov telescope. Our observations with Atacama Large Millimeter/submillitmeter Array, Australia Telescope Compact Array, and upgraded Giant Metre-wave Radio Telescope were obtained by our low frequency observing campaign and range from similar to 1 to similar to 140 d after the burst and the optical observations were done with three optical telescopes spanning up to similar to 25 d after the burst. Long-term radio/mm observations reveal the complex nature of the afterglow, which does not follow the spectral and temporal closure relations expected from the standard afterglow model. We find that the microphysical parameters of the external forward shock, representing the share of shock-created energy in the non-thermal electron population and magnetic field, are evolving with time. The inferred kinetic energy in the blast-wave depends strongly on the assumed ambient medium density profile, with a constant density medium demanding almost an order of magnitude higher energy than in the prompt emission, while a stellar wind-driven medium requires approximately the same amount energy as in prompt emission.

Abstract

Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) originate from ultra-relativistic jets launched from the collapsing cores of dying massive stars. They are characterized by an initial phase of bright and highly variable radiation in the kiloelectron volt-to-mega electronvoltband, which is probably produced within the jet and lasts from milliseconds to minutes, known as the prompt emission(1,2). Subsequently, the interaction of the jet with the surrounding medium generates shock waves that are responsible for the afterglow emission, which lasts from days to months and occurs over a broad energy range from the radio to the gigaelectronvolt bands(1-6). The afterglow emission is generally well explained as synchrotron radiation emitted by electrons accelerated by the external shock(7-9). Recently, intense long-lasting emission between 0.2 and 1 teraelectronvolts was observed from GRB 190114C(10,11). Here we report multifrequency observations of GRB 190114C, and study the evolution in time of the GRB emission across 17 orders of magnitude in energy, from 5 x 10(-6) to 10(12) electronvolts. We find that the broadband spectral energy distribution is double-peaked, with the teraelectronvolt emission constituting a distinct spectral component with power comparable to the synchrotron component. This component is associated with the afterglow and is satisfactorily explained by inverse Compton up-scattering of synchrotron photons by high-energy electrons. We find that the conditions required to account for the observed teraelectronvolt component are typical for GRBs, supporting the possibility that inverse Compton emission is commonly produced in GRBs., QC 20191217

Abstract

Background. There are several fixation techniques and devices available for ACL reconstruction, which differ significantly in their efficacy. There are no studies in the literature comparing femoral transfixation pins (Rigidfix) and adjustable loop (Rigid-loop) devices. We compared the outcomes of these devices in our study. Methods. A retrospective observational cohort study was done between November 2017 and June 2019. Of the total 95 cases, initial 47 patients had undergone graft fixation with Rigidfix and the subsequent 48 underwent fixation with Rigidloop. Clinical and functional evaluation of these patients was done at one-year follow-up and the results were compared. Results. The two groups were homogenous demographically. Though better outcome and functional scores were noted in the Rigidfix group, these observations were not statistically significant. Two Rigidloop cases had side to side difference in KT-1000 reading of > 5 mm with a fair outcome. Conclusions. Fixation of the hamstring autograft on the femoral side using Rigidfix cross pin and Rigidloop adjustable suspensory devices provide statistically comparable stability. The Lysholm grading and IKDC-2000 functional scores between both the groups were similar at one-year follow-up and hence can be used interchangeably intraoperatively if a need arises without any consequences. Abstract

The work presented in this article proposes a new centralized control strategy for energy management in grid interactive hybrid micro grids using AC and DC electric springs based on the available generation. The planned control strategy is very simple to implement and requires few mathematical calculations. Unlike many offline algorithms presented in literature, the proposed methodology works based on the voltage level at the load and generation buses on real time basis. The specific aim of this work is to reduce the energy served by the main grid during demand supply gaps in the micro grids. The considered hybrid micro grid consists of both AC and DC loads broadly classified as critical and noncritical loads of which critical loads are considered as uncontrollable loads. In this article, the energy conservation from main grid is achieved by making noncritical loads consume less power during generation uncertainties in the microsources. Abstract

This article deals about reduction of power drawn from the supply system in smart environment during un-certainties in the power generation. Supply system in this work is the system which consists of an intermittent power source and a storage system to support whenever there is deficit in power generation. A small micro grid system is considered for this study which has critical and non-critical load present in it along with storage system and Electric spring. An attempt is made to study the performance of Electric spring in reducing the power drawn from the supply system under different non-critical loads during un-certainties or power deficit conditions of the source. The effect of reactive component in the non-critical load is examined separately for the considered battery storage system. All the simulation models have been developed in MATLAB.

Rice is the main staple food after wheat for more than half of the world’s population in Asia. Apart from carbohydrate source, rice is gaining significant interest in terms of functional foods owing to the presence of aromatic compounds that impart health benefits by lowering glycemic index and rich availability of dietary fibers. The demand for aromatic rice especially basmati rice is expanding in local and global markets as aroma is considered as the best quality and desirable trait among consumers. There are more than 500 volatile aromatic compounds (VACs) vouched for excellent aroma and flavor in cooked aromatic rice due to the presence of aromatic hydrocarbons, aldehydes, phenols, alcohols, ketones, and esters. The predominant VAC contributing to aroma is 2 acetyl-1-pyrroline, which is commonly found in aerial parts of the crop and deposits during seed maturation. So far, literature has been focused on reporting about aromatic compounds in rice but its extraction, characterization, and quantification using analytical techniques are limited. Hence, in the present review, extraction, characterization, and application of aromatic compound have been elucidated. These VACs can give a new way to food processing and beverage industry as bioflavor and bioaroma compounds that enhance value addition of beverages, food, and fermented products such as gluten-free rice breads. Furthermore, owing to their nutritional values these VACs can be used in biofortification that ultimately addresses the food nutrition security.

Abstract

Solar Photovoltaic array may often be subjected to partial shading, which may lead to uneven row current and creates local maximum power point on the power-voltage characteristics. One of the effective approaches to dilute the concentration of partial shading is the array reconfiguration technique. This study proposes a ken-ken puzzle-based reconfiguration technique for $4\times 4$ total-cross-tied configuration to rearrange the position of modules within the array and to improve the maximum power under partial shading conditions. Further, the performance of the ken-ken puzzle arrangement is compared with the total-cross-tied configuration and existing reconfiguration techniques namely odd-even, Latin Square, and Sudoku reported in the literature. The performance of all these configurations is evaluated in terms of fill factor, mismatch loss, power loss, execution ratio, and performance enhancement ratio. The proposed ken-ken puzzle-based reconfiguration technique mitigates the occurrence of local maximum power point and eliminates the need for a complex algorithm to track the global maximum power point. The simulation result shows that the KK puzzle-based reconfiguration technique has obtained an improved PE of 10.85 % compared to TCT configuration, followed by LS, Sudoku, and OE. Also, the experimental result shows the effectiveness of the ken-ken in diluting the effects of partial shading when the rows of the photovoltaic array are shaded. The ken-ken puzzle-based reconfiguration technique reduces the complexity, maintenance and increases reliability, scalability of the PV array.

46. Effect of hight rhizospheric calcium on root growth and structure in Arabidopsis.

Abstract

Of the many nutrients essential for normal growth and development of plants, calcium occupies a unique position both chemically and functionally. As excess calcium is toxic to plants the sequestering of incoming calcium as calcium oxalate in epidermal trichomes has been studied in calcicoles from high calcium enriched environments. Much less is known about the patterns of variation in root structure in calcicoles, calcifuges and non-calcicoles in response to elevated levels of rhizospheric calcium. Six ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana, comprising the putative calcicole, Cal-0, the non-calcicole, Col-4 and four accessions collected from the wild were subjected to concentrations of rhizospheric calcium ranging from nil to 30 mM. The pattern of root growth, particularly lateral root formation and growth, varied in all the ecotypes according to the concentration of external calcium. In addition, the Glenisla, putative non-calcicole accession displayed a marked reduction in primary root growth at high rhizospheric calcium. In depth analysis of the root structure and morphology is in process. Glenisla also showed a marked difference in fresh weight of both shoots and roots and the shoot to root ratio in comparison to the other ecotypes.
