Abstract

How atmospheric pollution is perceived by urban dwellers has long been a topic of interest within geography and the social sciences, whether to draw attention to environmental injustices, to better understand the materialities and affects associated with polluted air, or to grasp how people 'tune in' to polluted matter. In this paper, we draw on three interrelated geographical and social science literatures on polluted air to inform our exploration of how residents of an industrial town in the UK encounter and perceive localised ambient air pollution. Using creative methods, we explore residents' narrative accounts of everyday life in the town, revealing how their engagements with the matter of pollution over time are drawn from multiple registers, giving rise to a plurality of perceptions filled with tensions between near and far, and between past, present and future, producing an ambiguous atmosphere all of its own. The paper contributes to geographic explorations of urban atmospheres an understanding of how they are differently experienced and known, and how residential perceptions might persist or change over different timescales. 11. Exploring discourses of decarbonisation : the social construction of low carbon housing

Abstract

With the UK committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80%, and British households accounting for around 25% of national carbon emissions, decarbonising the domestic sector is central to achieving this target. promoted as part of a solution to climate change, UK low carbon housing policy has developed rapidly over the last decade, leading to the development of a range of policies aimed at decarbonising the housing stock. Understood as socially constructed, the way in which social and environmental issues are interpreted and communicated can have an important influence on the success or failure of policy responses, as well as on public understandings. This thesis explores the discourses surrounding low carbon housing as they exist within di�erent sectors of society. Employing an interpretive qualitative methodology, this analysis utilises discourse and thematic analysis to explore low carbon housing discourse, investigating the policy, media, expert and public representations in turn. Rooted in Ecological modernisation, low carbon housing discourse is shown to adopt a techno-economic approach to reducing carbon emissions from housing; an approach that is embedded within policy, media and expert discourses. In contrast, public understandings of low carbon housing draw on broader discourses of Environmental concern, whilst understandings of low carbon housing are based around resource use and the embodied carbon within the material housing. Through investigation of the assumptions surrounding the incentives and mechanisms for change embedded within the discourses, this thesis highlights the socially constructed nature of low carbon housing, demonstrating the important role that environmental and everyday values play in public understandings of what is often considered to be a purely technological entity. This alternative understanding of low carbon housing within the public sphere opens up a new discursive space and may provide a new direction from which to approach the issue of reducing carbon emissions.

34. Citizens' climate assemblies: Understanding public deliberation for climate policy

Abstract

National net-zero targets require ambitious policy and have implications for the way people will live over the \ud coming decades. To achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, or sooner, requires active participation across civil \ud society. \ud Citizens’ assemblies on climate change are a promising means by which citizens can be placed at the core of \ud a democratic decision-making process to develop or advise on policies. In this report we show that a diverse \ud cross-section of citizens can come together with minimal prior understanding and conclude in favour of farreaching climate policies, often going further than polls or politicians’ assumptions about public opinion\ud suggest is possible. All the same, there is no single way to run a citizens' assembly on climate change: the \ud ways in which they are designed has an important influence on assembly outcomes and recommendations.\ud In this report, we present an in-depth analysis of the Climate Assembly UK (CAUK), focusing on: a) the design \ud of the process including its structure, scope and framing; b) the deliberations that took place and the \ud underlying values surrounding how to achieve net-zero that they revealed; and c) assembly members' wider \ud perceptions of climate change, derived from follow-up interviews with CAUK participants. We next examine \ud the similarities and differences between the French Convention Citoyenne pour le Climat (CCC) and the UK \ud approach; we also focus on the CCC's consideration of 'consumption’ and question the extent to which this \ud allowed citizens to address the underlying and systemic drivers of unsustainable consumption. Finally, we \ud explore the diversity of local and regional processes within the UK, emphasising their ability to galvanise \ud action despite limitations surrounding the ability to achieve wider public engagement or specific policy \ud recommendations.

Abstract

The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) levels in matched samples of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and subcutaneous fat from a large Australian cohort were studied to examine treatment, clinical, and demographic association with mtDNA depletion. The results confirm a tissue- and drug-specific association between nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) exposure and mtDNA levels and there was no effect of the duration of therapy, suggesting that mtDNA depletion occurs rapidly when NRTIs are commenced.

A study was conducted to investigate the effects of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) on the viability and function of HIV-1-infected and -uninfected human monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) associated with reduced phagocytic capacity of macrophages, a crucial function in host surveillance and immunity. Results have important implications for use of these antiretroviral drugs in immunocomprised individuals.

Abstract

The degree and reversibility of adipocyte apoptosis in patients with lipoatrophy before and 48 weeks after substituting abacavir or zidovudine for stavudine is assessed. It is concluded that increased apoptosis is present in fat samples from patients with lipoatrophy treated with stavudine.
