Abstract

We report two tunable diode laser configurations emitting around 2.6 μm, where the gain is provided by a high-gain GaSb-based reflective semiconductor optical amplifier. The lasers are driven in pulsed mode at 20 °C, with a pulse width of 1 μs and 10% duty cycle to minimize heating effects. To demonstrate the broad tuning and high output power capability of the gain chip, an external cavity diode laser configuration based on using a ruled diffraction grating in a Littrow configuration is demonstrated. The laser shows a wide tuning range of 154 nm and a maximum average output power on the order of 10 mW at 2.63 μm, corresponding to a peak power of 100 mW. For a more compact and robust integrated configuration, we consider an extended-cavity laser design where the feedback is provided by a silicon photonics chip acting as a reflector. In particular, the integrated tuning mechanism is based on utilizing the Vernier effect between two thermally tunable micro-ring resonators. In this case, a tuning range of around 70 nm is demonstrated in a compact architecture, with an average power of 1 mW, corresponding to a peak power of 10 mW. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report a case of endometriosis of the round ligament in a 29-year-old woman, who complained of a lump with a diameter of about 2.5 cm in the right inguinal region, which increased in bulk and was accompanied by intense pain during the menstrual period. The clinical suspicion of inguinal endometriosis, supported by ultrasonography and Magnetic Resonance (MR), was confirmed by histological examination of the surgical specimen, which included the mass and the extraperitoneal segment of the round ligament. The authors conclude that the appearance of a lump in the inguinal region associated with subjective and objective changes of the lesion in relation to the menstrual cycle must raise the suspicion of endometriosis among the possible diagnoses.

Abstract

We carried out second-harmonic generation in quasi-phase-matched a-phase lithium niobate channel waveguides realized by proton exchange and surface periodic poling. Owing to a limited ferroelectric domain depth, we could observe the interplay between second-harmonic generation and self-phase modulation due to cascading and cubic effects, resulting in a nonlinear resonance shift. Data reduction allowed us to evaluate both the quadratic nonlinearity in the near infrared as well as the depth of the uninverted domains. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Abstract

We propose a novel polarization rotator concept using two-dimensional (2D) anisotropic materials, such as molybdenum trioxide, on top of 3µm silicon waveguides. The in-plane anisotropic behaviour of 500 nm thick MoO3 flake is analysed and confirmed with Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract

In this paper, we have demonstrated the beam steering experiments with the help of our optical phased array devices. The lateral beam steering has been showed successfully with the wavelength through the tunable laser source. The number of output channels were 512 and the array width was kept more than a millimeter with a 2-µm pitch. The beam steering angle has been measured as 45° and the beam movement was 1°/nm. As the chip does not collimate the beam vertically, so, a commercial collimating lens has been used in the vertical direction.
