We experimentally observe harmonic oscillations in a bosonic condensate of exciton-polaritons confined within an elliptical trap. These oscillations arise from quantum beats between two size-quantized states of the condensate, split in energy due to the trap's ellipticity. By precisely targeting specific spots inside the trap with non-resonant laser pulses, we control the frequency, amplitude, and phase of these quantum beats. The condensate wavefunction dynamics are visualized on a streak camera and mapped to the Bloch sphere, demonstrating Hadamard and Pauli-Z operations. We conclude that a qubit based on a superposition of these two polariton states would exhibit a coherence time exceeding the lifetime of an individual exciton-polariton by at least two orders of magnitude.

At low lattice temperatures the nuclear spins in a solid form a closed thermodynamic system that is well isolated from the lattice. Thermodynamic properties of the nuclear spin system are characterized by the local field of spin-spin interactions, which determines its heat capacity and the minimal achievable nuclear spin temperature in demagnetization experiments. We report the results of measurement of the local field for the nuclear spin system in GaAs, which is a model material for semiconductor spintronics. The choice of the structure, a weakly doped GaAs epitaxial layer with weak residual deformations, and of the measurement method, the adiabatic demagnetization of optically cooled nuclear spins, allowed us to refine the value of nuclear spin-spin local field, which turned out to be two times less than one previously obtained. Our experimental results are supported by calculations, which take into account dipole-dipole and indirect (pseudodipolar and exchange) nuclear spin interactions as well as quadrupole splitting of nuclear spins in the vicinity of charged impurity centers., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables

The efficiency of the adiabatic demagnetization of nuclear spin system (NSS) of a solid is limited, if quadrupole effects are present. Nevertheless, despite a considerable quadrupole interaction, recent experiments validated the thermodynamic description of the NSS in GaAs. This suggests that nuclear spin temperature can be used as the universal indicator of the NSS state in presence of external perturbations. We implement this idea by analyzing the modification of the NSS temperature in response to an oscillating magnetic field at various frequencies, an approach termed as the warm-up spectroscopy. It is tested in a n-GaAs sample where both mechanical strain and built-in electric field may contribute to the quadrupole splitting, yielding the parameters of electric field gradient tensors for 75As and both Ga isotopes, 69Ga and 71Ga., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Van der Waals heterobilayers based on 2D transition metal dichalcogenides have been recently shown to support robust and long-lived valley polarization for potential valleytronic applications. However, the role of the band structure and alignment of the constituent layers in the underlying dynamics remains largely unexplored. Here we study spin--valley relaxation dynamics in heterobilayers with different band structures engineered via the use of alloyed monolayer semiconductors. Through a combination of time-resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopic measurements and theoretical modelling for Mo$_{1-x}$W$_{x}$Se$_2$/WSe$_2$ samples with different chemical compositions and stacking angles, we uncover the roles of interlayer exciton recombination and charge carrier spin depolarization in the overall valley dynamics. Our results provide insights into the microscopic spin--valley polarization mechanisms in van der Waals heterostructures for the development of future 2D valleytronic devices.

Spin-lattice relaxation of the nuclear spin system in p-type GaAs is studied using a three-stage experimental protocol including optical pumping and measuring the difference of the nuclear spin polarization before and after a dark interval of variable length. This method allows us to measure the spin-lattice relaxation time $T_1$ of optically pumped nuclei "in the dark", that is, in the absence of illumination. The measured $T_1$ values fall into the sub-second time range, being three orders of magnitude shorter than in earlier studied n-type GaAs. The drastic difference is further emphasized by magnetic-field and temperature dependences of $T_1$ in p-GaAs, showing no similarity to those in n-GaAs. This unexpected behavior is explained within a developed theoretical model involving quadrupole relaxation of nuclear spins, which is induced by electric fields within closely spaced donor-acceptor pairs., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

The spin dynamics of localized donor-bound electrons interacting with the nuclear spin ensemble in $n$-doped GaAs epilayers is studied using nuclear spin polarization by light with modulated circular polarization. We show that the observed build-up of the nuclear spin polarization is a result of competition between nuclear spin cooling and nuclear spin warm-up in the oscillating Knight field. The developed model allows us to explain the dependence of nuclear spin polarization on the modulation frequency and to estimate the equilibration time of the nuclear spin system that appears to be shorter than the transverse relaxation time $T_2$ determined from nuclear magnetic resonance., Comment: Several improvements to v1, 7 pages, 5 figures, corrected list of refs

Photoluminescence polarization is experimentally studied for samples with (In,Ga)As/GaAs selfassembled quantum dots in transverse magnetic field (Hanle effect) under slow modulation of the excitation light polarization from fractions of Hz to tens of kHz. The polarization reflects the evolution of strongly coupled electron-nuclear spin system in the quantum dots. Strong modification of the Hanle curves under variation of the modulation period is attributed to the peculiarities of the spin dynamics of quadrupole nuclei, which states are split due to deformation of the crystal lattice in the quantum dots. Analysis of the Hanle curves is fulfilled in the framework of a phenomenological model considering a separate dynamics of a nuclear field BNd determined by the +/- 12 nuclear spin states and of a nuclear field BNq determined by the split-off states +/- 3/2, +/- 5/2, etc. It is found that the characteristic relaxation time for the nuclear field BNd is of order of 0.5 s, while the relaxation of the field BNq is faster by three orders of magnitude., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

We study experimentally the oscillations of a non stationary transient signal of a semiconductor microcavity with embedded InGaAs quantum wells. The oscillations occur as a result of quantum beats between the upper and lower polariton modes due to the strong exciton-photon coupling in the microcavity sample (Rabi oscillations). The registration of spectrally resolved signal has allowed for separate observation of oscillations at the eigenfrequencies of two polariton modes. Surprisingly, the observed oscillations measured at the lower and upper polariton modes have opposite phases. We demonstrate theoretically that the opposite-phase oscillations are caused by the pump-induced modification of polariton Hopfield coefficients, which govern the ratio of exciton and photon components in each of the polartion modes. Such a behaviour is a fundamental feature of the quantum beats of coupled light-matter states. In contrast, the reference pump-probe experiment performed for the pure excitonic states in a quantum well heterostructure with no microcavity revealed the in-phase oscillations of the pump-probe signals measured at different excitonic levels., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Multiple quantum beats of a system of the coherently excited quantum confined exciton states in a high-quality heterostructure with a wide InGaAs/GaAs quantum well are experimentally detected by the spectrally resolved pump-probe method for the first time. The beat signal is observed as at positive as at negative delays between the pump and probe pulses. A theoretical model is developed, which allows one to attribute the QBs at negative delay to the four-wave mixing (FWM) signal detected at the non-standard direction. The beat signal is strongly enhanced by the interference of the FWM wave with the polarization created by the probe pulse. At positive delay, the QBs are due to the mutual interference of the quantum confined exciton states. Several QB frequencies are observed in the experiments, which coincide with the interlevel spacings in the exciton system. The decay time for QBs is of order of several picoseconds at both the positive and negative delays. They are close to the relaxation time of exciton population that allows one to consider the exciton depopulation as the main mechanism of the coherence relaxation in the system under study., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Photoinduced Kerr rotation by more than $\pi /2$ radians is demonstrated in planar quantum well microcavity in the strong coupling regime. This result is close to the predicted theoretical maximum of $\pi $. It is achieved by engineering microcavity parameters such that the optical impedance matching condition is reached at the smallest negative detuning between exciton resonance and the cavity mode. This ensures the optimum combination of the exciton induced optical non-linearity and the enhancement of the Kerr angle by the cavity. Comprehensive analysis of the polarization state of the light in this regime shows that both renormalization of the exciton energy and the saturation of the excitonic resonance contribute to the observed optical nonlinearities., Comment: Shortened version prepared to submit in Phys. The optical gyrotropy noise of a high-finesse semiconductor Bragg microcavity with an embedded quantum well (QW) is studied at different detunings of the photon mode and the QW exciton resonances. A strong suppression of the noise magnitude for the photon mode frequencies lying above exciton resonances is found. We show that such a critical behavior of the observed optical noise power is specific of asymmetric Fabry-Perot resonators. As follows from our analysis, at a certain level of intracavity loss, the reflectivity of the asymmetric resonator vanishes, while the polarimetric sensitivity to the gyrotropy changes dramatically when moving across the critical point. The results of model calculations are in a good agreement with our experimental data on the spin noise in a single-quantum-well microcavity and are confirmed also by the spectra of the photo-induced Kerr rotation in the pump-probe experiments., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We present a comprehensive investigation of the electron-nuclear system of negatively charged InGaAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots under the influence of weak external magnetic fields (up to 2 mT). We demonstrate that, in contrast to conventional semiconductor systems, these small fields have a profound influence on the electron spin dynamics, via the hyperfine interaction. Quantum dots, with their comparatively limited number of nuclei, present electron-nuclear behavior that is unique to low-dimensional systems. We show that the conventional Hanle effect used to measure electron spin relaxation times, for example, cannot be used in these systems when the spin lifetimes are long. An individual nucleus in the QD is subject to milli-Tesla effective fields, arising from the interaction with its nearest-neighbors and with the electronic Knight field. The alignment of each nucleus is influenced by application of external fields of the same magnitude. A polarized nuclear system, which may have an effective field strength of several Tesla, may easily be influenced by these milli-Tesla fields. This in turn has a dramatic effect on the electron spin dynamics, and we use this technique to gain a measure of both the dipole-dipole field and the maximum Knight field in our system, thus allowing us to estimate the maximum Overhauser field that may be generated at zero external magnetic field. A key to achieving ultra-long electron spin memory in quantum dots (QDs) at 0~$T$ is the polarization of the nuclei, such that the electron spin is stabilized along the nuclear magnetic field. We demonstrate that spin-polarized electrons in n-doped QDs align the nuclear field via the hyperfine interaction. A feedback onto the electrons occurs, leading to stabilization of electron polarization. We suggest that the coupled electron-nuclear system forms a rigid nuclear spin polaron state as predicted by I.A.~Merkulov, for which spin memory is retained over millisecond lifetimes., Comment: 3 figures
