Soil water content is one of the most common physical parameters that cause landslides or debris flow. Therefore, it is of very importance to determine or predict the water content quickly and non-destructively. This study investigates the hyperspectral information in the visible near-infrared regions (VNIR) of different samples of granite soils possessing varying water content. Totally 162 granite samples were taken from each mountain area. The samples with different water contents were examined using a hyperspectral radiometer operating in the 400~1000nm range by obtaining the spectral curves. It was found that the variation of VNIR is consistent with the water content variation of weathered granite soils, and the hyperspectral camera was able to detect it. A Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) analysis was applied to develop a calibration-model. The PLSR model resulted in a good correlation between the water content and VNIR profile. The results demonstrate that the hyperspectral camera combined with the PLSR model can be a useful and non-destructive tool for determining soil water contents in the weathered granite soils.

Objective: Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is a major prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) synthetic enzyme and is involved in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammation and pain in osteoarthritis (OA). The objective of this study was to directly address whether microRNA (miR)-558 can control the interleukin (IL)-1β-mediated induction of COX-2 and catabolic effects in human articular chondrocytes.Materials and Methods: Total RNA was extracted from the cartilage tissues of normal and OA donors or cultured human articular chondrocytes. The expression of miR-558 was quantified by TaqMan assay. To investigate the repressive effect of miR-558 on COX-2 expression, human chondrocytes and chondrogenic SW1353 cells were transfected with mature miR-558 or an antisense inhibitor (anti-miR-558). The expression of COX-2 protein was determined by Western blot analysis and the involvement of miR-558 in IL-1β-induced catabolic effects was examined by Western blot analysis and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Direct interaction between miR-558 and the putative site in the 3'-untranslated region (UTR) of COX-2 messenger RNA (mRNA) was validated by luciferase reporter assay.Results: Normal human articular cartilage expressed miR-558, and its expression was significantly lower in OA cartilage. Stimulation with IL-1β led to a significant reduction in miR-558 expression in normal and OA chondrocytes. IL-1β-induced activation of MAP kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) decreased miR-558 expression and induced COX-2 expression in chondrocytes. The overexpression of miR-558 directly suppressed the luciferase activity of a reporter construct containing the 3'-UTR of human COX-2 mRNA and significantly inhibited IL-1β-induced upregulation of COX-2, while treatment with anti-miR-558 enhanced IL-1β-induced COX-2 expression and reporter activity in chondrocytes. Interestingly, IL-1β-induced activation of NF-κB and expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and MMP-13 was significantly inhibited by miR-558 overexpression.Conclusion: These findings demonstrated that cartilage homeostasis is influenced by miR-558, which directly targets COX-2 and regulates IL-1β-stimulated catabolic effects in human chondrocytes. A comparative study of lifting lines for subsea equipment decommissioning was conducted to evaluate the applicability of fiber ropes. Generally, conventional steel wire ropes are used for subsea equipment decommissioning operations, but there are some disadvantages in using steel wires as the lifting lines at deepwater depth. To overcome the disadvantages, fiber ropes are proposed for using as lifting lines. The comparative methods to evaluate the performance of both lifting lines include three sections of calculations, payload capacity, and horizontal offset due to current, critical length of lifting line. Moreover, dynamic analysis using Orcaflex was performed to compare the dynamic forces occurring in the lifting lines during subsea equipment decommissioning. The results showed that the fiber ropes had advantages in payload capacity, critical length of lifting line and lower dynamic forces occurred compared to the steel wire ropes at deepwater depth.

Introduction: Smoking behaviors can be quantified using various indices. Previous studies have shown that these indices measure and predict health risks differently. Additionally, the choice of measure differs depending on the health outcome of interest. We compared how each smoking index predicted all-cause mortality and assessed the goodness-of-fit of each model., Methods: A population-based retrospective cohort, the Korea National Health Examination Baseline Cohort, was used (N=6001607). Data from 2009 were utilized, and the participants were followed until 2021. Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were performed among all participants and ever smokers, respectively, to estimate all-cause mortality. Model fit was assessed by the Akaike Information Criterion., Results: For men, smoking intensity showed the strongest effect size (hazard ratio HR=1.16; 95% CI: 1.14-1.18), while pack-years provided the best model fit for all-cause mortality. Among women, smoking intensity showed both the strongest effect size (HR=1.49; 95% CI: 1.28-1.74) and the best model fit. Smoking status (never/former/current) also showed comparable effect sizes (men, HR=1.14; 95% CI: 1.13-1.15; women, HR=1.14; 95% CI: 1.11- 1.18) with fair model fit. Analyses of people who ever smoked indicated that a model incorporating smoking status, duration, and intensity best described the mortality data., Conclusions: The smoking indices showed varying effect sizes and model fits by sex, making it challenging to recommend a single optimal measure. Smoking intensity may be preferred for capturing cumulative exposure, whereas smoking status is notable for its simplicity, comparable effect size, and model fit. The burden of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) continue to plague the healthcare system. One approach to managing moderate-to-severe ABSSSI in low-risk patients involves use of a single dose lipoglycopeptide (LGP), dalbavancin or oritavancin, in the emergency department (ED) and discharge to home with follow-up care. Limited ED studies indicate decreased hospital stays, ED revisits, readmissions, and healthcare costs, as well as improved patient satisfaction with use of these antibiotics. However, existing literature has limitations and gaps, such as insufficient quantifiable data on patient selection criteria, outcome predictors, and risk factors leading to treatment failure. Moreover, there is lack of research on the impact of LGPs on organizational productivity, patient quality of life, and utility in indications beyond ABSSSI. This review focuses on the role of long-acting LGPs in the ED setting for select patients presenting with ABSSSI, aiming to avoid hospitalizations, expedite patient discharge, and prevent readmissions while acknowledging potential limitations of therapy. Tobacco endgame is a focal point of discussion at both national and international levels. We aimed to describe efforts related to achieving the tobacco endgame in the Republic of Korea, an exemplar of a country with endgame aspirations, and compare them with the efforts of other nations. We reviewed the tobacco endgame efforts of three nations considered tobacco control leaders: New Zealand (NZ), Australia and Finland. The efforts/attempts of each country were described using an endgame strategy category. The tobacco control leaders had explicit goals to achieve a smoking prevalence of <5% before a target date and had legislation and research centres for tobacco control and/or endgame. NZ is implementing a mixture of conventional and innovative endgame interventions; the others use incremental conventional approaches. In Korea, there has been an attempt to ban the sale and manufacture of combustible cigarettes. The attempt led to the filing of a petition, and a survey of adults showed 70% supported the legislation banning tobacco. The Korean government mentioned a tobacco endgame in a 2019 plan, yet a target and an end date were absent. The 2019 plan in Korea included incremental FCTC strategies. Practices in the leading countries show that legislation and research are key to ending the tobacco epidemic. The MPOWER measures must be strengthened, endgame objectives must be set and bold strategies must be adopted. Introduction: This study investigated the risks for all-cause death and death from cancer or cardiovascular diseases due to smoking status and behavior, focusing on differences in smoking duration and amount stratified by sex., Methods: The integrated Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study provided data for 209770 individuals who were classified as never, former, or current smokers, based on their current smoking status. Pack-years were computed using daily average smoking amount and total smoking duration, and were categorized into quantiles separately for men and women. Based on the number of deaths in 2018, hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated for all-cause mortality, as well as for death caused by all cancers, lung cancer, and cardiovascular diseases according to pack-years adjusted for age, household income, marital status, body mass index, physical activity, and alcohol consumption., Results: A significant increase in the risk of all-cause mortality was observed for current smokers (men HR=1.90; 95% CI: 1.69-2.14; women HR=2.25; 95% CI: 1.68-2.99) and former smokers (men HR=1.31; 95% CI: 1.17-1.47; women HR=2.35; 95% CI: 1.63-3.39) compared with that for those who had never smoked. Among men, HR for death from lung cancer was 3.13 (95% CI: 2.06-4.75) in former smokers and tended to increase with each pack-year quantile (range HR: 5.72-17.11). Among women, the HR was estimated to be 17.20 (95% CI: 6.22-47.57) only for >3rd quantile., Conclusions: Smoking increases the risks of all-cause death. Objectives: Estimating the number of deaths caused by smoking is crucial for developing and evaluating tobacco control and smoking cessation policies. This study aimed to determine smoking-attributable mortality (SAM) in Korea in 2020., Methods: Four large-scale cohorts from Korea were analyzed. A Cox proportional-hazards model was used to determine the hazard ratios (HRs) of smoking-related death. By conducting a meta-analysis of these HRs, the pooled HRs of smoking-related death for 41 diseases were estimated. Population-attributable fractions (PAFs) were calculated based on the smoking prevalence for 1995 in conjunction with the pooled HRs. Subsequently, SAM was derived using the PAF and the number of deaths recorded for each disease in 2020., Results: The pooled HR for all-cause mortality attributable to smoking was 1.73 for current men smokers (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.53 to 1.95) and 1.63 for current women smokers (95% CI, 1.37 to 1.94). Smoking accounted for 33.2% of all-cause deaths in men and 4.6% in women. Additionally, it was a factor in 71.8% of men lung cancer deaths and 11.9% of women lung cancer deaths. In 2020, smoking was responsible for 53 930 men deaths and 6283 women deaths, totaling 60 213 deaths., Conclusions: Cigarette smoking was responsible for a significant number of deaths in Korea in 2020. Monitoring the impact and societal burden of smoking is essential for effective tobacco control and harm prevention policies.

Background: Appetitive sensations (AS) are signals that guide eating behaviors. Marked short-term inter-individual variability in AS has been reported but the long-term stability of individual ratings and their dietary implications are not well characterized., Objectives: This study explored the stability of inter-individual ratings of hunger, fullness and thirst for 17 weeks; determined the relationships between these sensations, eating patterns and energy intake (EI); as well as the associations between ratings and selected individual characteristics (age, gender, BMI)., Methods: A 17-week observational study collected hourly appetitive ratings and dietary intake data from 97 (90 completers, 7 partial completers) healthy adults at weeks 1, 9, and 17., Results: There were marked and stable inter-individual differences over the 17 weeks for hunger (week 1 vs. week 9, r = 0.72 (p < 0.001); week 1 vs. week 17, r = 0.67 (p < 0.001); week 9 vs. week 17, r = 0.77 (p < 0.001)); fullness (week 1 vs. week 9 r = 0.74 (p < 0.001); week 1 vs. week 17, r = 0.71 (p < 0.001); week 9 vs. week 17, r = 0.81 (p < 0.001)); and thirst (week 1 vs. week 9 r = 0.82 (p < 0.001); week 1 vs. week 17, r = 0.81 (p < 0.001); week 9 vs. week 17, r = 0.88 (p < 0.001)). Cross-correlation functions revealed EI and eating pattern exerted stronger effects on AS than the reverse. However, the absolute effect sizes were small. Path analyses also indicated that there were weak relationships between AS and EI. No robust effects of the studied individual characteristics were observed., Conclusion: This study found that acute and chronic sensations of hunger, fullness and thirst are relatively stable within individuals but vary markedly between individuals. Background: Reducing tobacco retailer availability is a key tobacco endgame policy. The development and evaluation of retail-based policies require spatial methodologies. We modelled the prevalence of adult cigarette and electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) use according to tobacco retailer density, considering geographical variations., Methods: Registration data for tobacco retail businesses, a population-representative survey of South Koreans aged ≥19 years, and population and land area data were used. We merged the datasets according to geographical units. Ordinary least squares (OLS) and geographically weighted regression (GWR) analyses were conducted to model cigarette and ENDS use prevalence, respectively., Findings: Tobacco retailer density was associated with increased cigarette use prevalence in the OLS model (β=2.19, p=0.02). A 1.9-fold difference by region was identified for the coefficient, indicating an association with tobacco retailer density (minimum 1.39, maximum 2.65), in the GWR analysis. No significant association was present between tobacco retailer density and ENDS prevalence in either the OLS (β=0.24, p=0.37) or the GWR model (minimum 0.20, maximum 0.28)., Conclusion: Our results suggest the importance of using spatial methods to develop and evaluate retail-based endgame policies. Objectives: Although the global COVID-19 pandemic has increased interest in research involving high-risk smokers, studies examining changed smoking behaviours, cessation intentions and associated psychological states among smokers are still scarce. This study aimed to systematically review the literature related to this subject., Design: A systematic review of published articles on cigarettes and COVID-19 -related topics DATA SOURCES: Our search was conducted in January 2021. We used the keywords COVID-19, cigarettes, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and psychological factors in PubMed and ScienceDirect and found papers published between January and December 2020., Data Selection: We included articles in full text, written in English, and that surveyed adults. The topics included smoking behaviour, smoking cessation, psychological state of smokers and COVID-19-related topics., Data Extraction and Synthesis: Papers of low quality, based on quality assessment, were excluded. Thirteen papers were related to smoking behaviour, nine papers were related to smoking cessation and four papers were related to psychological states of smokers., Results: Owing to the COVID-19 lockdown, cigarette users were habituated to purchasing large quantities of cigarettes in advance. Additionally, cigarette-only users increased their attempts and willingness to quit smoking, compared with e-cigarette-only users., Conclusions: Owing to the COVID-19 outbreak, the intention to quit smoking was different among smokers, according to cigarette type (cigarette-only users, e-cigarette-only users and dual users). With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, policies and campaigns to increase smoking cessation intentions and attempts to quit smoking among smokers at high risk of COVID-19 should be implemented. Energy intake is the product of portion size (PS)-the energy content of an ingestive event-and ingestive frequency (IF)-the number of ingestive events per unit time. An uncompensated alteration in either PS or IF would result in a change in energy intake and body weight if maintained over time. The objective of this meta-analysis was to assess the independent effects of PS and IF on energy intake and body weight among healthy adults in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). A total of 9708 articles were identified in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, and CINAHL databases. The articles were divided among 10 researchers; each article was screened for eligibility by 2-3 independent reviewers. Exclusion criteria included: populations <19 y and >65 y, unhealthy populations (i.e. participants with an acute or chronic disease), assessments <24 h and <4 wk in duration for trials investigating energy intake or body weight, respectively. Controlled feeding trials (i.e. fixed energy intake) that manipulated IF and PS in the same study intervention (IF/PS) were evaluated separately and for the body weight outcome only. Twenty-two studies (IF = 4, PS = 14, IF/PS = 4) met the inclusion criteria. There was an insufficient number of studies to assess the effect of IF, PS, or IF/PS on body weight. There was heterogeneity in the effect sizes among all comparisons (I2 ≥75%). Consuming larger portion sizes was associated with higher daily energy intake [295 kcal (202, 388), n = 24; weighted mean differences (WMD) (95% CI), n = comparisons], and increased frequency of ingestive events was associated with higher energy intake [203 kcal (76, 330), n = 10]. Results from RCTs support that larger PS and greater IF are both associated with higher energy consumption. However, there is insufficient information to determine chronic effects on body weight. Bleomycin is a cytotoxic antibiotic that has a sclerosing effect on vascular endothelium. Small doses can be injected locally to reduce the size of various vascular malformations. Recognition that targeted intralesional injection carries the potential to cause hyperpigmentation, specifically in areas of skin trauma, and has led our department to implement a bleomycin skin-protective protocol. On review of cases performed following protocol implementation, no patients developed hyperpigmentation attributable to iatrogenic skin trauma. Sweetness is a sensation that contributes to the palatability of foods, which is the primary driver of food choice. Thus, understanding how to measure the appeal (hedonics) of sweetness and how to modify it are key to effecting dietary change for health. Sweet hedonics is multidimensional so can only be captured by multiple approaches including assessment of elements such as liking, preference, and consumption intent. There are both innate and learned components to the appeal of sweet foods and beverages. These are responsive to various behavioral and biological factors, suggesting the opportunity to modify intake. Given the high amount of added sugar intake in the United States and recommendations from many groups to reduce this, further exploration of current hypothesized approaches to moderate sugar intake (e.g., induced hedonic shift, use of low-calorie sweeteners) is warranted., (© The Author(s) 2021. Background: As the global coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues, many countries have implemented public health policies, such as lockdowns and physical distancing measures, to prevent its spread. South Korea's response to COVID-19, which prevented an increase in confirmed cases and increased resilience, has been considered very effective., Purpose: To analyze Korea's response to COVID-19 in 2020 and develop a logic model to evaluate performance effectiveness in follow-up studies., Methods: By content analysis of Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) press releases, we defined the problems and identified the causes of the health and social effects of the COVID-19 outbreak. Next, we created a problem tree and developed a logic model that comprised inputs, activities, outputs, outcomes, and impacts. Finally, we held expert consultations to obtain expert opinions regarding the logic model and to ensure the model's validity., Results: South Korea's COVID-19 response policy mitigated the social and health impacts. The 2020 COVID-19 responses had four outcomes (identifying cases on time, preventing transmission of coronavirus infection, effective treatment of COVID-19 cases, protecting public resilience and well-being) and 12 outputs; South Korea conducted 32 activities., Conclusion: The results can be a practical reference for managing problems faced in other countries. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all aspects of human society, including education, culture, and the economy, and has also introduced changes in people's health behaviors such as drinking alcohol, nutrition intake, and practicing healthy living. This study conducted qualitative research in the Korean context to examine the changes in the smoking behavior of smokers and secondhand smoke exposure of non-smokers during the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: Focus group interviews were conducted with 36 Korean participants (18 men and 18 women). The groups were composed of cigarette smokers, e-cigarette users, heated tobacco product users, and non-smokers., Results: During the pandemic, it was found that there was an increase in the frequency of use, irrespective of the tobacco product, in users who refrained from social interaction and worked or studied from home. Users who continued to be socially active increased the amount used with each usage. Smokers showed a tendency to avoid smoking rooms and to smoke alone in places unoccupied by people. In addition, non-smokers' exposure to secondhand smoke did not decrease, but since non-smokers used masks, they reported more relief from the risk of exposure to secondhand smoke than before., Conclusions: Despite smokers being a high-risk group for COVID-19, the risk did not result in smoking cessation among smokers. Background: Emergency department (ED) visits and hospitalizations from skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) have been on the rise and have led to an increased clinical and economic burden. Owing to their single-dose regimen, recently approved lipoglycopeptides such as oritavancin have the potential to shift the management of SSTIs from an inpatient to outpatient setting. Limited data exist regarding the use of these drugs in the ED setting., Objectives: The purpose of this study was to describe the impact that clinical decision support (CDS) incorporation into the computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system had on oritavancin use and to assess compliance with appropriate use guidelines in the ED., Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study evaluating patients who received oritavancin from September 2016 to May 2018. The patients were assigned to the pre-CDS-implementation group if oritavancin was used between September 13, 2016, and June 28, 2017 and to the post-CDS-implementation group if oritavancin was used between August 28, 2017, and May 25, 2018. There was a 2-month transition period between the 2 study time periods. Patients were excluded if the administration occurred outside of the ED or during the transition period. The primary endpoints were oritavancin use and compliance with the appropriate use guidelines after the implementation., Results: There were 169 oritavancin orders in total, of which 119 met the inclusion criteria. There was a marked decrease in use post-CDS implementation (9.2 orders/mo vs. 3 orders/mo). Among those who were prescribed oritavancin, compliance with the appropriate use guidelines increased; however, this did not reach statistical significance., Conclusion: The implementation of the appropriate use guidelines with CDS integration into the CPOE system decreased overall oritavancin use but did not have an impact on compliance with the appropriate use guidelines., (Copyright © 2021 American Pharmacists Association®. Worldwide, South Korea had the second highest incidence rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) in 2018. To inform public health policy to prevent CRC, we aimed to identify major modifiable lifestyle factors underlying the alarming increase in CRC incidence. We obtained information on CRC statistics from the Korea National Cancer Incidence Database and on the distribution of dietary and lifestyle factors known to modify CRC risk from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. To examine time trends between 2001 and 2013, we calculated annual percent changes of CRC incidence rates and of prevalence of etiologic factors by sex and age. Across all sex and age groups, the most commonly diagnosed cancer was rectal cancer while the most rapidly increasing cancer was distal colon cancer. For the lifestyle factors examined, decreases in exercise were observed across all age groups of both sexes. Yet, obesity and alcoholic drinks appear more relevant CRC contributor to men, smoking to women aged 30-49 years, and processed meat intake to adults aged 30-49 years. The heterogeneous results suggest that dietary and lifestyle target to prevent CRC be tailored by sex and age.

Nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) are effective taste stimuli. The quality they impart has not been well characterized. Sourness, and "fattiness" have been reported, but an irritation component has also been described and how these transition with gradations of aliphatic chain length has not been systematically studied. This study examined intensity and quality ratings of NEFA ranging from C2 to C18. Oral sites and the time course of sensations were also monitored. Given all NEFA contain carboxylic acid moieties capable of donating hydrogen ions, the primary stimulus for sour taste, testing was conducted with and without sour adaptation to explore the contribution of sour taste across the range of NEFA. Short-chain NEFA (C2-C6) were rated as predominantly sour, and this was diminished in C2 and C4 by sour adaptation. Medium-chain NEFA (C8-C12) were rated as mainly irritating with long-chain NEFA (C18) described mostly as bitter. The latter may reflect the lack of "fatty" lexicon to describe the sensation. Short-chain NEFA were mostly localized to the anterior tongue and were of rapid onset. The sensation from medium-chain NEFA was attributed to the lateral tongue, whereas medium- and long-chain NEFA sensations were predominantly localized to the back of the tongue and throat and had a longer lag time. The findings indicate there is a systematic transition of NEFA taste quality and irritation with increments in chain length and this is consistent with multiple modes of transduction., (© The Author(s) 2021.
