The process of urbanization generates substantial amounts of solid waste materials, including glass, red brick, concrete, and ceramic tile. Effective treatment methods for these waste materials are currently lacking, resulting in significant land wastage and environmental pollution. Utilizing these waste materials in the construction of asphalt pavements presents a viable solution for their high-quality and large-scale utilization. In this study, the properties of commonly produced urban solid waste materials, including glass, red brick, concrete, and ceramic tile, were investigated for their suitability as limestone porous asphalt mixtures. The physical and chemical properties of the coarse aggregate were examined using four groups of preliminary tests, including leakage analysis, scattering, rutting, and freeze-thaw splitting tests. The results revealed that the apparent relative density varied for different particle sizes within the range of 2.36–4.75 mm, 4.75–9.5 mm, 9.5–16 mm, and 13.2–16 mm. However, the dynamic stability of the glass specimen was only 740 times/mm, which falls significantly below the technical requirement of 1500 times/mm. Additionally, the high-temperature stability of the glass specimen was deemed unsatisfactory. The red brick test piece exhibited inadequate water stability due to its high-water absorption rate. Therefore, reducing the amount of waste glass and minimizing the incorporation of waste red brick are recommended. The findings of this study contribute to the expansion of application methods and techniques for urban solid waste, improving the utilization rate of solid waste resources. Furthermore, the study sheds light on the changes in the performance of solid waste aggregates mixed with porous asphalt mixtures, providing valuable insights for road engineering endeavors.

Multilevel diffractive lenses (MDLs) has undergone considerable advancements, marked by their exceptional efficiency and diverse focusing capabilities, resulting in their widespread use in optical systems. In recent times, MDLs have consistently been juxtaposed with metalenses, which have experienced swift progress over the last decade. Concurrently, MDLs have continued to evolve, propelled by their distinct advantages, such as cost-effective production and adaptability for mass manufacturing. This article explores the evolution and foundational concepts of MDLs, highlighting the advantages of their circular symmetry in enhancing simulation and optimization efficiency. Furthermore, we present several innovative fabrication methods for MDLs that capitalize on the latest advancements in 3D printing technology. We also show the practical applications and potential future developments of MDLs.

Given the importance of self-healing polymers for chemistry education, herein, we introduce our latest research results in self-healing materials based on thioctic acid into undergraduate chemistry laboratory. In this experiment, a natural small molecule, thioctic acid (TA), and a few other commercially-available reagents have been used to make a processable multifunctional self-healing copolymer by a straightforward and reproducible method without harsh reaction conditions or a tedious precursor synthesis. Furthermore, with the help of the virtual simulation platform and online teaching resources, students can learn and operate this experiment derived from cutting-edge materials research in an effective, vivid, and safe way within a limited laboratory duration. This experiment was designed to involve a classic polymer synthesis, data analysis, and structural and performance characterization of the self-repairing copolymers based on thioctic acid. As a matter of fact, this simple molecular structure with attractive properties can engage undergraduates' interest in topics like dynamic polymerization, supramolecular hydrogen bond interactions, and self-healing polymer, further motivating them to get a deep understanding of the mechanism and possible applications of this class of self-healing materials. The corresponding knowledge of polymer and chemical structure characterization like nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR), and Raman spectroscopy learned in the undergraduate chemistry course is also well revisited and reinforced during the process of operating this self-healing copolymer experiment. This experiment can provide an attractive platform for polymer-related undergraduate education and closely bridge laboratory experiments to the most recent scientific research for undergraduates. It is therefore perfectly suitable for a chemistry course, especially the experimental section of upper-division undergraduates.

Hindered growth often occurs because of psychological and environmental stress during the weaning period of piglets. This study aimed to compare the effects of growth performance, diarrhea indices, digestibility of nutrients, antioxidant capacity, neurotransmitters levels and metabolism of weaned pigs fed diets supplemented with pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) and zinc oxide (ZnO). An accurate estimation of net energy (NE) of wheat bran is essential for precision feeding of sows. However, the effects of inclusion level on NE of wheat bran have not been reported. Inclusion level was hypothesized to impact NE of wheat bran by regulating gut microbiota and partitioning of heat production. Therefore, twelve multiparous sows (Yorkshire × Landrace; 2 to 4 parity) were assigned to a replicated 3 × 6 Youden square with 3 successive periods and 6 diets in each square. The experiment included a corn-soybean meal diet (WB0) and five diets including 9.8% (WB10), 19.5% (WB20), 29.2% (WB30), 39.0% (WB40) and 48.7% wheat bran (WB50), respectively. Abstract Background The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, is an economically important shellfish around the world. Great efforts have been made to improve its growth rate through genetic breeding. However, the candidate marker genes, pathways, and potential lncRNAs involved in oyster growth regulation remain largely unknown. To identify genes, lncRNAs, and pathways involved in growth regulation, C. gigas spat was cultured at a low temperature (15 ℃) to yield a growth-inhibited model, which was used to conduct comparative transcriptome analysis with spat cultured at normal temperature (25 ℃). Results In total, 8627 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 1072 differentially expressed lncRNAs (DELs) were identified between the normal-growth oysters (cultured at 25 ℃, hereinafter referred to as NG) and slow-growth oysters (cultured at 15 ℃, hereinafter referred to as SG). Functional enrichment analysis showed that these DEGs were mostly enriched in the AMPK signaling pathway, MAPK signaling pathway, insulin signaling pathway, autophagy, apoptosis, calcium signaling pathway, and endocytosis process. LncRNAs analysis identified 265 cis-acting pairs and 618 trans-acting pairs that might participate in oyster growth regulation. The expression levels of LNC_001270, LNC_003322, LNC_011563, LNC_006260, and LNC_012905 were inducible to the culture temperature and food abundance. These lncRNAs were located at the antisense, upstream, or downstream of the SREBP1/p62, CDC42, CaM, FAS, and PIK3CA genes, respectively. Furthermore, the expression of the trans-acting lncRNAs, including XR_9000022.2, LNC_008019, LNC_015817, LNC_000838, LNC_00839, LNC_011859, LNC_007294, LNC_006429, XR_002198885.1, and XR_902224.2 was also significantly associated with the expression of genes enriched in AMPK signaling pathway, insulin signaling pathway, autophagy, apoptosis, calcium signaling pathway, and endocytosis process. Conclusions In this study, we identified the critical growth-related genes and lncRNAs that could be utilized as candidate markers to illustrate the molecular mechanisms underlying the growth regulation of Pacific oysters.

Abstract Background Channel catfish and blue catfish are the most important aquacultured species in the USA. The species do not readily intermate naturally but F1 hybrids can be produced through artificial spawning. F1 hybrids produced by mating channel catfish female with blue catfish male exhibit heterosis and provide an ideal system to study reproductive isolation and hybrid vigor. The purpose of the study was to generate high-quality chromosome level reference genome sequences and to determine their genomic similarities and differences. Results We present high-quality reference genome sequences for both channel catfish and blue catfish, containing only 67 and 139 total gaps, respectively. We also report three pericentric chromosome inversions between the two genomes, as evidenced by long reads across the inversion junctions from distinct individuals, genetic linkage mapping, and PCR amplicons across the inversion junctions. Recombination rates within the inversional segments, detected as double crossovers, are extremely low among backcross progenies (progenies of channel catfish female × F1 hybrid male), suggesting that the pericentric inversions interrupt postzygotic recombination or survival of recombinants. Identification of channel catfish- and blue catfish-specific genes, along with expansions of immunoglobulin genes and centromeric Xba elements, provides insights into genomic hallmarks of these species. Conclusions We generated high-quality reference genome sequences for both blue catfish and channel catfish and identified major chromosomal inversions on chromosomes 6, 11, and 24. These perimetric inversions were validated by additional sequencing analysis, genetic linkage mapping, and PCR analysis across the inversion junctions. The reference genome sequences, as well as the contrasted chromosomal architecture should provide guidance for the interspecific breeding programs.

In this paper, a temperature measurement system with NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistors was designed. An MCU (Micro Control Unit) primarily operates by converting the voltage value collected by an ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter) into the resistance value. The temperature value is then calculated, and a DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) outputs a current of 4 to 20 mA that is linearly related to the temperature value. The nonlinear characteristics of NTC thermistors pose a challenging problem. The nonlinear characteristics of NTC thermistors were to a great extent solved by using a resistance ratio model. The high precision of the NTC thermistor is obtained by fitting it with the Hoge equation. The results of actual measurements suggest that each module works properly, and the temperature measurement accuracy of 0.067 °C in the range from −40 °C to 120 °C has been achieved. The uncertainty of the output current is analyzed and calculated with the uncertainty of 0.0014 mA. This type of system has broad potential applications in industry fields such as the petrochemical industry.

Soil erosion is an important cause of global land degradation and other ecological and environmental problems. Revealing the influence mechanism of land use/cover change (LUCC) on sediment yield can provide a scientific basis for efficient comprehensive and decision-making management of watersheds. As an important indicator of sediment yield and transport capacity, sediment connectivity has been widely studied in recent years. However, the existing index of sediment connectivity (IC) ignores the influence of upslope land use/cover on confluence and the corresponding changes in downslope sediment transport. Moreover, a formula describing the upslope and downslope components does not establish an effective correlation with existing soil erosion formulas. Therefore, the index is not closely related to the erosion process and does not reflect the physical process of sediment transport and sediment deposition. In addition, there have been few reports concerning the effect of LUCC on sediment connectivity inside (on-site impact) and outside (off-site impact) the changed patches. Consequently, by based on addition of the revised parameters of the effective confluence area (Ar) and the runoff velocity factor (v) of the sediment delivery distributed (SEDD) model, an improved sediment connectivity index (ICZQ) is proposed. The results indicate that ICZQ has a significant linear relationship with annual runoff depth or sediment yield modulus in small watersheds within 100 km2 in the Loess Plateau, except for feature years containing rainstorm events (daily rainfall exceeding 50 mm). Therefore, the runoff and sediment transport capacity of small watersheds can be characterized by ICZQ under the influence of LUCC and rainfall change. In 1982–2020, driven by LUCC with an enhancement in vegetation (forest and grass), the ICZQ decreased in 90% of the area and decreased by a significant or extremely significant level over 48% of the area. To better understand the effects of LUCC on sediment connectivity, we analyzed on-site and off-site impacts with rainfall remaining unchanged to control the variables. The contribution rates of the on-site and off-site impacts caused by LUCC on sediment connectivity in Lvergou were 61% and 39%, 48% and 52%, respectively, over two typical periods (1985–1990 and 2015–2020). Due to the large proportion that off-site impacts occupied in the sediment connectivity change, the impact of LUCC on sediment connectivity cannot be ignored, especially when the associated scale is relatively small. The present study provides a quantitative method for the optimization of land use/cover patterns, such as vegetation restoration in watersheds along with a reference for further revealing the impact mechanism of erosion and sediment yield in watersheds.

This experiment aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary starch-to-fat ratio on reproductive performance and lipid metabolism of sows and newborn piglets. A total of 75 Landrace × Yorkshire multiparous sows at d 84 of gestation were selected and randomly divided into three groups based on body weight. From d 85 of gestation to farrowing, sows were fed one of three dietary starch-to-fat ratios (20:1, 10:1, and 5:1). Dietary high starch-to-fat ratio increased the birth weight of piglets (p < 0.05). The apparent total digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, and gross energy of sows was improved by an increasing starch-to-fat ratio during gestation (p < 0.05). Decreased dietary starch-to-fat ratio increased the concentration of plasma triglycerides, total cholesterol, and GSH-Px in sows (p < 0.05). During parturition, sows had increased plasma interleukin (IL) -1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor α in the low ratio group (p < 0.05). The relative abundance of Streptococcaceae in the low ratio group was significantly higher (p < 0.05). The medium dietary starch-to-fat ratio significantly increased the concentrations of short chain fatty acids. In conclusion, this study suggested that for sows a diet with ahigh starch to fat ratio could ameliorate lipid metabolism disorder and maternal inflammation during late gestation.

The enteric nervous system (ENS) is important for the intestinal barrier to defend and regulate inflammation in the intestine. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) on regulating neuropeptide secretion by ENS neurons of rats challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to create enteritis. Thirty Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups, namely, basal (CTRL), basal plus LPS challenge (LPS), basal with 2.5 mg/kg b.w./day of PQQ plus challenge with LPS (PQQ 2.5), basal with 5.0 mg/kg b.w./day PQQ plus challenge with LPS (PQQ 5), and basal with 10.0 mg/kg b.w./day PQQ plus challenge with LPS (PQQ 10). After treatment with basal diet or PQQ for 14 days, rats were challenged with LPS except for the CTRL group. Rats were euthanized 6 h after the LPS challenge. Rats showed an increased average daily gain in PQQ treatment groups (P < 0.05). Compared with the LPS group, PQQ 5 and PQQ 10 rats showed increased villus height and villus height/crypt depth of jejunum (P < 0.05). In PQQ treatment groups, concentrations of IL-1β and TNF-α in serum and intestine of rats were decreased, and IL-10 concentration was increased in serum compared with the LPS group (P < 0.05). Compared with the LPS group, the concentration of neuropeptide Y (NPY), nerve growth factor (NGF), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), substance P (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), and brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) in serum were decreased in PQQ treatment groups (P < 0.05). Compared with the LPS group, ileal mRNA levels of BDNF, NPY, and NGF were decreased in PQQ treatment groups (P < 0.05). Jejunal concentrations of SP, CGRP, VIP, BDNF, NPY, and NGF were decreased in PQQ treatment groups compared with the LPS group (P < 0.05). Compared with the LPS group, phosphor-protein kinase B (p-Akt)/Akt levels in jejunum and colon were decreased in PQQ treatment groups (P < 0.05). In conclusion, daily treatment with PQQ improved daily gain, jejunal morphology, immune responses. PQQ-regulated enteric neurochemical plasticity of ENS via the Akt signaling pathway of weaned rats suffering from enteritis.

A sudden drop in salinity following extreme precipitation events usually causes mass mortality of oysters exposed to pathogens in ocean environment. While how low salinity stress interacts with pathogens to cause mass mortality remains obscure. In this study, we performed an experiment by low salinity stress and pathogen infection with Vibrio alginolyticus to investigate their synergistic effect on the mortality of the Pacific oyster toward understanding of the interaction among environment, host, and pathogen. We showed that low salinity stress did not significantly affect proliferation and virulence of V. alginolyticus, but significantly altered microbial composition and immune response of infected oysters. Microbial community profiling by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing revealed disrupted homeostasis of digestive bacterial microbiota with the abundance of several pathogenic bacteria being increased, which may affect the pathogenesis in infected oysters. Transcriptome profiling of infected oysters revealed that a large number of genes associated with apoptosis and inflammation were significantly upregulated under low salinity, suggesting that low salinity stress may have triggered immune dysregulation in infected oysters. Our results suggest that host-pathogen interactions are strongly affected by low salinity stress, which is of great significance for assessing future environmental risk of pathogenic diseases, decoding the interaction among environment, host genetics and commensal microbes, and disease surveillance in the oyster.

Objective This study investigated the synergistic repair effects of Prontosan hydrogel and carbon photon therapy in a rat full-thickness wound model. Methods The wavelength distribution of the photon source was determined. Dehydration of the Prontosan hydrogel and fibroblast viability were analyzed following exposure to different durations of light exposure at different distances from the source. Indexes of wound healing in a full-thickness rat wound model were then determined in groups ( n = 8 each) subjected to either no treatment, Prontosan treatment only, carbon photon therapy only, or a combination of the two treatments (synergistic group). Results Carbon photon exposure for 15 minutes at a distance of 20 cm from the wound was found to be optimal. Wound healing occurred faster in the synergistic group compared with the control and single-treatment groups. Growth factor secretion, granulation tissue formation, inflammation regulation, collagen deposition, and neovascularization were all higher in the synergistic group. Conclusions Prontosan hydrogel combined with carbon photon therapy may provide an optimal environment for wound healing and serve as a novel physical approach to the treatment of wounds. However, the number of animals included in this study was relatively small and a larger study is required to confirm these findings.

There are many factors involved in wound healing, and the healing process is not static. The therapeutic effect of modern wound dressings in the clinical management of wounds is documented. However, there are few reports regarding the reasonable selection of dressings for certain types of wounds in the clinic. In this article, we retrospect the history of wound dressing development and the classification of modern wound dressings. In addition, the pros and cons of mainstream modern wound dressings for the healing of different wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers, burns and scalds, and chronic leg ulcers, as well as the physiological mechanisms involved in wound healing are summarized. This article provides a clinical guideline for selecting suitable wound dressings according to the types of wounds.

The study objective was to assess effects of different weaning ages on growth performance, intestinal morphology and redox status in Duroc × Landrace × Large White piglets (n = 96) fed diets without antibiotic growth promoters. Piglets were selected from 24 litters based on similar body weight at 14 d of age. All piglets were allocated to two groups in a completely random design with six replicates and eight pigs per replicate (four barrows and four gilts), which were weaned at 21 (n = 48; BW = 6.87 ± 0.33 kg) and 28 (n = 48; BW = 8.49 ± 0.41 kg) days of age. After weaning, pigs were fed a corn–soybean meal-based diet. Average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), feed conversion (F:G), diarrhea incidence, gastrointestinal pH, intestinal morphology and redox status were determined. Pigs weaned at 28 d displayed increased ADG from d 8 to 14 (p < 0.01) compared with pigs weaned at 21 d. Pigs weaned at 28 d had a higher ADFI from d 0 to 7 (p < 0.01), d 8 to 14 (p < 0.01), d 15 to 28 (p < 0.05) and during the entire experimental period (p < 0.01) compared with pigs weaned at 21 d. Pigs weaned at 21 d had an improved F:G from d 15 to 28 (p < 0.05) compared with pigs weaned at 28 d. Pigs weaned at 28 d had decreased diarrhea incidence from d 8 to 14 (p < 0.01) and the entire experimental period (p < 0.01) compared with pigs weaned at 21 d. On d 28, the pH of the stomach contents in pigs weaned at 21 d was significantly higher compared with pigs weaned at 28 d (p < 0.01). On d 14, the morphology of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum in pigs weaned at 28 d was improved compared with pigs weaned at 21 d. During the experiment period, the antioxidant abilities of pigs weaned at 28 d of the heart, liver, kidney, intestinal and serum were better than pigs weaned at 21 d. In conclusion, intestinal morphology, pH of the stomach and antioxidant status of pigs weaned at 28 d were better than pigs weaned at 21 d. These factors supported better growth performance and decreased diarrhea incidence.

The research was implemented to assess the safety of feeding excess of pyrroloquinoline quinone disodium (PQQ·Na2) to 108 Duroc × Landrace × Large White weaned pigs (BW = 8.38 ± 0.47 kg). Pigs were weaned at 28 d and randomly distributed to one of three diets with six replicates and six pigs per replicate (three males and three females). Pigs in the control group were fed a corn-soybean meal-based diet (without growth promoter) while the two experimental diets were supplied with 7.5 and 75.0 mg/kg PQQ·Na2, respectively. Average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), feed conversion (F:G), diarrhea incidence, hematology, serum biochemistry, organ index and general health were determined. Diets supplementation with 7.5 mg/kg PQQ·Na2 in weaned pigs could increase ADG during the entire experimental period (p < 0.05). And there was a tendency to decrease F:G (p = 0.063). The F:G of weaned pigs fed 7.5 and 75.0 mg/kg PQQ·Na2 supplemented diets was decreased by 9.83% and 8.67%, respectively, compared to the control group. Moreover, pigs had reduced diarrhea incidence (p < 0.01) when supplemented with PQQ·Na2. No differences were observed between pigs supplemented with 0.0, 7.5 and 75.0 mg/kg PQQ·Na2 diets on hematological and serum biochemical parameters as well as histological assessment of heart, liver, spleen, lung and kidney. At day 14, pigs had increased activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) (p < 0.05), catalase (CAT) (p < 0.05) and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) (p < 0.05), and the serum concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) was decreased (p < 0.01) with PQQ·Na2 supplementation. At day 28, pigs had increased activities of total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) (p < 0.01), GSH-Px (p < 0.01), CAT (p < 0.05) and T-AOC (p < 0.01), and serum concentration of MDA was lower (p < 0.01) with PQQ·Na2 supplementation. In conclusion, PQQ·Na2 can improve weaned pigs growth performance and serum antioxidant status. Meanwhile high PQQ·Na2 inclusion of 75.0 mg/kg does not appear to result in harmful effects on growth performance of pigs.
