Introduction:Chronic subdural hematoma (HSDC) is a common pathology in neurosurgery. It is defined as sanguineous accumulation between the dura and the arachnoid, most often following minor head trauma. Its occurrence is closely related to advanced age and / or coagulopathy. The diagnosis is to be evoked face to any neurological alteration of the elderly or alcoholic subject. Certain clinical forms are sometimes misleading and may take on a psychiatric or senile dementia aspect. The brain CT scan without injection allows the diagnosis in the majority of cases. Treatment is primarily surgical, with corticosteroid therapy alone having little chance to be effective. The objective of our work is to study the epidemiological, clinical, para-clinical, therapeutic and evolutionary aspects of chronic subdural hematoma at the University Hospital of Oran. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective descriptive study, that included elderly patients treated for chronic subdural hematoma in the neurosurgery department of Oran University Hospital over a period of five years.Results:Atotal of 133 patients were operated on for a chronic subdural hematoma during the study period. The mean age of the cases was 70 ± 13 years. Clinical manifestations weredominated by motor disturbances and headache. The CT scan was the key diagnostic test. All patients received surgical treatment. The postoperative consequences were favorable in more than 99% of cases with a low rate of complications.Conclusion:Chronic subdural hematoma is a frequent neurological pathology in elderly with benign head trauma often gone unnoticed in the weeks preceding the emergency consultation. Management is purely surgical and the outcome is favorable in most cases.&nbsp

Résumé La dépression constitue la comorbidité psychiatrique la plus fréquente chez les patients épileptiques avec un impact considérable sur la qualité de vie et un pronostic péjoratif quant à la réponse aux traitements pharmacologiques et chirurgicaux. La relation entre la dépression et l'épilepsie est bidirectionnelle impliquant des mécanismes physiopathogéniques communs. Malgré sa fréquence et son retentissement négatif sur l'évolution naturelle de la maladie épileptique, la dépression reste encore sous-diagnostiquée et insuffisamment traitée chez ces patients. Ceci peut être du au manque de formation spécifique des neurologues pour le dépistage et la prise en charge des comorbidités psychiatriques, ou encore à la présentation clinique atypique des symptômes dépressifs chez ce type de patients. La prise en charge de la dépression chez les épileptiques est à la fois pharmacologique et non pharmacologique, l'objectif principal étant d'obtenir une rémission complète des symptômes dépressifs sans réduire le seuil épileptogène. Cette mise au point a pour objectif de décrire les aspects épidémiologiques, cliniques et thérapeutiques de la dépression chez les patients atteints d'épilepsie, à la lumière des données les plus récentes de la littérature.

Introduction:Dental anxiety is a frequent phenomenon whose causes and predisposing factors vary from one population to another. The objective of our study is to know the prevalence of dental anxiety and its intensity within the Oran population, and to identify the risk factors.Methods:This is a monocentric analytical descriptive study conducted in the Department of Oral Pathology and Surgery of the Center Hospitalo-Universitaire d'Oran over two months using a semi-structured questionnaire. The level of care-related anxiety was assessed by the Corah score. The study of the risk factors was carried out by a multivariate analysis by logistic regression.Results:311 individuals participated in the study. The prevalence of anxiety was 56.6%. The average anxiety score was 9.87. Anxiety was moderate in 94 (30.3%) participants, severe in 13.4%, and 47 participants (15.2%) suffered from dental care phobia. The multivariate analysis retained five factors significantly associated with anxiety in the final model: female sex (P = 0.009), negative attitude of the dentist (P = 0.004), fear of the sound of the strawberry (P = 0.018), cries of patients in the chair (P Conclusion:Anxiety related to dental care is common in the Oran population. The identification of risk factors will undoubtedly improve patient care by acting on anxiety factors.

SARS-CoV-2, the viral agent of COVID-19 primarily affects the respiratory and cardiovascular system. However, neurological damage is not uncommon and can lead to serious complications if it is not diagnosed and taken care too early. The most common neurological manifestations encompasses headache, encephalopathy, stroke and Guillain Barré syndrome. Through this literature review, we discuss the mechanisms of penetration of the SARS-CoV-2 virus into the nervous system, and we report the central and peripheral neurological manifestations of COVID-19 infection. Le virus SARS-CoV-2, responsable de la COVID-19 affecte principalement le système respiratoire et cardiovasculaire. Cependant, l’atteinte neurologique n’est pas rare et peut entraîner des complications graves si elle n’est pas diagnostiquée et prise en charge précocement. Les manifestations neurologiques les plus fréquentes sont les céphalées, l’encéphalopathie, les accidents vasculaires cérébraux et le syndrome de Guillain Barré. A travers cette revue de littérature, nous discutons les mécanismes de dissémination du virus SARS-CoV-2 dans le système nerveux, et nous rapportons les manifestations neurologiques centrales et périphériques liées à l’infection COVID-19.

IntroductionFibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) is an extremely rare genetic disease characterized by heterotopic ossification of muscles and connective tissue occurring in relapses, which can lead to the creation of a real second skeleton. The rarity of this disease is responsible for a delay in diagnosis of several years. FOP is described mainly in young children; cases with a late onset are extremely rare. ObservationWe report a case of late-onset Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva and we discuss clinical, radiological and genetic aspects, as well as treatment and outcomes.

Brain metastases are frequent and dreadful complications of cancer especially lung, breast, colorectal and melanoma cancers. Advances in the past decade have resulted in a better understanding of the biology and molecular basis of brain metastases, resulting in more elaborate prognostic models, thereby expanding the range of perspectives for personalized medicine. The management of patients with brain metastases has evolved considerably; the therapeutic arsenal that was limited to conventional radiotherapy, systemic chemotherapy and surgery has expanded to include stereotaxic radiosurgery, immunotherapy and targeted therapy; this latter having a higher bioavailability beyond the blood-tumor barrier. In addition, advances in the field of neuroimaging, which has been enriched by functional imaging, currently allow precise targeting of brain lesions during treatment and help to differentiate the effects of treatment from the progression of the disease. With the passage of these advances in the field of basic science to preclinical and clinical applications, it is almost certain that the future results of treatment of patients with brain metastases will improve.

Diabetes and cancer are two complex andmultifactorialconditions, which incidence and prevalence are rising around the world. With significant associated morbidity and mortality, their combination does not seem to be onlyepidemiologicbut also involves physiopathogenic underneaths. It leads to an elevated risk in incidence and prognosis of various cancers in diabetic patients. Several phenomenons described in diabetes such as hyperglycemia, insulinoresistance, and an inflammatory state participate in carcinogenesis. Epigenetic defects asdeoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) methylation,histonepost-translational changes and micro-ribonucleic acid (micro-RNA) is a possible explanation, making the link between metabolic and inflammatory abnormalities and carcinogenesis. The occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is mediated by non-alcoholicsteatosisdisease (NAFLD)which is the hepatic expression of metabolic syndrome. It is first cancer related cause of death in diabetic patients. Its incidence is increasing since type 2 diabetes (T2D) and associated metabolic disorders are in progression, as hypertension, obesity and sedentary lifestyle. Finally,antidiabetictreatments opened new fields of research, especially with metformin, whose anti-oncogenic effects demonstrated in experimental studies, have not been confirmed for use as adjuvant in anticancer therapies.

Introduction:La fibrodysplasie ossifiante progressive (FOP) est une maladie génétique extrêmement rare, caractérisée par une ossification hétérotopique des tissus musculaires et conjonctifs évoluant par poussées, pouvant conduire à la création d’un véritable deuxième squelette. La rareté de cette maladie est à l’origine d’une errance diagnostique de plusieurs années. La FOP est décrite essentiellement chez le jeune enfant, les cas à début tardif sont extrêmement rares. Observation:Nous rapportons un cas de Fibrodysplasie ossifiante progressiveà expression tardiveavec une revue de littérature des aspects cliniques, radiologiques, génétiques, évolutifs et thérapeutiques.

A genetic component to epilepsy has been recognized since Antiquity and is well established through twin and familial aggregation studies, which provide convincing evidence for the heritability of epilepsy. Despite major advances in genetic studies, genetic epilepsies have not yet revealed all their secrets. This prospective study aimed to identify genetic variants of epilepsy, to document the genotype/phenotype correlations and inheritance patterns in multigenerational Algerian families. Genetic analyzes included exome sequencing, CGH-array and Southern blotting.We studied a family with a pair of monozygotic twins affected by temporal lobe epilepsy. Exome sequencing revealed that both twins carried a novel de novo mutation (p.A39E) in the GAL gene encoding the galanin neuropeptide. This latter was found to act as a potent anticonvulsant and regulates epileptic seizures in animal models. However, until now its role in human epilepsy was not established. Functional analysis showed evidence that the mutant protein disrupts galanin signalling, and strongly supports GAL as the causal gene for the TLE in this family.We described a family with two siblings affected by temporal lobe epilepsy and psychiatric comorbidities. Exome sequencing identified a single nucleotide polymorphism in the RELN gene (rs55689103) whose mutations have been associated with epilepsy and schizophrenia.We identified two families with progressive myoclonus epilepsy type 1. Genetic studies by Southern blotting showed an expansion of dodecamer CCCCGCCCCGCG in EPM1 gene. In addition, two other families were analysed by CGH-array, but no pathogenic CNV was identified. The study of other multigenerational families would identify new genetic variants of epilepsy., L’existence d’une composante génétique dans l’épilepsie est connue depuis des années grâce aux études épidémiologiques de concordance entre jumeaux et d’agrégation familiale, qui fournissent des preuves convaincantes pour l'héritabilité de l'épilepsie. En dépit des avancées majeures des techniques d’exploration pangénomique, les épilepsies génétiques n’ont pas encore livré tous leurs secrets. Cette étude avait pour objectifs de caractériser des variants génétiques de vulnérabilité à l’épilepsie, d’étudier les modes de transmission et d’analyser les relations génotype/phénotype chez des familles Algériennes.Il s’agit d’une étude prospective menée au service de Neurologie du CHU d’Oran sur une période de 05 ans. Des familles multigénérationnelles comportant chacune au moins deux individus épileptiques ont participé à l’étude. Les analyses génétiques réalisées consistaient en un séquençage exomique de nouvelle génération, la technique de Southern Blot, et la recherche de variations du nombre de copies d’ADN (CNV) par la technique de CGH-array. Parmi les quarante familles ayant participé à l’étude, six ont bénéficié d’études génétiques. Ces études ont permis d’identifier une mutation de novo (p.A39E) dans le gène GAL codant pour le neuropeptide galanine chez des jumeaux monozygotes atteints d’épilepsie du lobe temporal (ELT). Le rôle du peptide Galanine dans la régulation du processus d’épileptogénèse a été démontré il y a plus de deux décennies sur des modèles animaux, mais à ce jour, aucune mutation GAL en rapport avec un phénotype épileptique n’avait été décrite chez l’Homme. Nous avons complété l’étude génétique par des analyses in silico qui ont confirmé l’hypothèse de causalité de la mutation identifiée, et corrélé le génotype au phénotype dans cette famille. Nos résultats pourraient avoir des retombées directes sur le développement de molécules antiépileptiques à base de galanine et de traitements par thérapie génique. Nous avons analysé une deuxième famille au phénotype d’ELT et comorbidités psychiatriques. Le séquençage exomique a mis en évidence un variant (rs55689103) du gène RELN déjà incriminé dans l’épilepsie et la schizophrénie. Nous avons identifié deux autres familles au phénotype d’épilepsie myoclonique progressive de type 1. L’étude génétique par Southern Blot a confirmé l’expansion du dodécamère CCCCGCCCCGCG dans le gène EPM1.
